Used to be a lovely pub, but now it’s overpriced and no atmosphere, replaced good local drinks like Welsh lager with Italian peroni, removed the big screen so no live sport and can’t even sit at the bar. £5.50 for a lager is ridiculous this is Abergavenny not London

Such a shame the new owners haven't maintained the standard of cookery we previously enjoyed. Soggy pie pastry with cold chicken. Burger in a cheap untoasted bun with no onion/pickle and all served on cold plates. The waitress was fabulous and must have been embarrassed to serve such bad meals. Add to that now 'dog friendly' so we ate to the musical ? accompany of at least 5 dogs. Been eating here for years...... not in the future though

We came upon this gem as we were wandering around Abergavenny a few days ago. It was reassuringly nearly full - with mainly older generation clientele, who obviously know what’s good! A menu of proper, old-fashioned food (liver, chops, faggots etc) that trendy foodies would probably scoff at. But when they taste it they’ll scoff the lot! I had the local butcher’s faggots with mash, greens, mushy peas and gravy, washed down with a pint of perfectly conditioned 6X. It was heavenly! My wife had a cheese and (proper) ham omelette with chips and a glass of white wine. The lady that served us was absolutely delightful. And they had no problem with us bringing in our dog, Arthur, who was equally appreciative of the food! Can’t recommend it highly enough.

I have reviewed the Greyhound Vaults before and we - two Octogenarians - continue to enjoy our very regular visits. Mid week lunches offer a very wide range of choices from an extensive Menu that has several " favourites" including Roy's speciality omelettes - his Spanish omelette is my favourite and there is always a vegetarian choice. Lyn's Deserts really are to die for - my favourite is the New York Cheese cake.On Sunday lunch is offered with a range of favourite roast choices and, as on weekdays, a fish and vegetarian dish.Comfortable, unpretentious surroundings with very friendly and efficient staff. Family and friends who have joined us there have been delighted and are always glad to go back. We usually reserve a table as it is in the middle of town and very popular! There is a public car park opposite.

Stopping off in Abergavenny for lunch and a stroll while en cross country route home from the Gower, we had planned to check out the arty cafe in an old church across the road when our eye was caught by the prospect of the Greyhound Vaults. We were lucky to get a Saturday lunchtime table for two as there were plenty of reserved signs testifying to its popularity, and sat down to take in the surroundings, which offer a 'this has worked for us for years and we don't need to change it' vibe, clean and tidy but a tad old-fashioned, and that's not a moan. Beer choice was limited, so it was a trip down memory lane with a pint of Flowers keg, which I hadn't seen for years - apparently this former Whitbread staple is now brewed down the road by Brains in Cardiff. The menu is full of traditional favourites, too, though with a few modern add-ons and all very competitively priced. On one side of the table it was big chunks of roast ham with stacks of fresh parsley sauce and plenty of plain but tasty veg, I opted for a platter of cooked meats (ham, pork and beef) which came with saute spuds and a bowl of salad as well as pickles. My only moan would be poor application of dressing to the salad, which came in quite a small bowl so it wasn't possible to give it a good stir at the table so the bottom half was a bit dry. First world problems. Most of the diners seem to be regulars, service came with a big smile, it was a very tasty trip down memory lane.

This place is no modern fancy restaurant producing menus which most people can barely understand. However, the food on a Sunday rivals that of many a more expensive restaurant with prices to match their unrealistic ambitions. At the Greyhound Vaults go for a good Sunday lunch with plenty of choice to satisfy most people. The surroundings may be 1970's but who cares if the food is good?

The greyhound vaults looks to be a cross between a pub and a restaurant and that is reflected in their menu. I had the steak pie (which was very hot on arrival) with chips. I recommend applying a generous amount of the seasoning on the table to the chips and the meat in the pie was slightly dry ,but apart from that it was very nice. The food was delivered very quickly and the service was generally nice.

There was a good selection of food on the menu and not just your typical roast dinner. The dessert menu also had a good selection. Very good value for money. Room lighting was a little iffy. Well decorated. Outwhat's the minimum for charging devices? Water in the room a couple of breakfast options available with a meal. Hotel was unavailable from the street until four p m, fact that no one communicated to us, Nor did anyone advise to pull into one of the upper street parking lots and walked down and Sort out how baggage would get there. A good news is they have WI. Fi. The bad news is it's unsecured so you really can't use it. No elevator always a problem with old british hotels, can prepare to leave your bags in the car.

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.

Took my sales team here for lunch, 10 of us in total. The food is incredible and you certainly won’t go hungry. Everyone at the pub is friendly and can’t do enough for you. Feels like a good old fashioned boozer set in an amazing position on the Wye. Everyone only had good things to say about the place. Steak is a specialty here. No hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown. Thanks all who looked after us that day.
