Lovely chips but the fish was not fresh and the batter was rubbery / re-heated, very disappointed.

Came here upon the glowing recommendations. Unfortunately, the reviews didn’t quite reflect the food itself. The fish was chunky and flaked relatively well, yet the batter was not good. It was very stodgy, having zero crunch or crisp to it. The chips were nice but undercooked. I was expecting better. The service was good. Would I return? No.

Came to this place as the Google reviews was great, but don't be fooled, the fish I received was very soggy and oily and so was my girlfriends sausage and batter! You would expect it to have some sort of crunch! The chips was okish and they use cheap tartar sauce packets. Overall we won't be coming back. My suggestion is go to the CodFather in Abergavenny, much better local fish bar :)

All we had was a large bag of chips. They was delicious and served by a lovely lady.

Brilliant, friendly ladies and delicious fish and chips - so welcome on a rainy Saturday evening. Stayed really warm on the walk back to the canal. Such great value too!

Wonderful fish and chips. It is a cash only establishment which may not suit everyone, but I think it's great, we need to keep cash alive and the proprietor is very honest and enthusiastic. You won't find a better fish bar anywhere. 😍😍

The best cod and chips we have ever had. We have been here several times, wonderful ladies, amazing service with a smile, always the best cod and chips and only about £6.50 for a small portion, which isn't small. They cook fresh to order. Definitely the best fish and chip shop around. Highly recommend

Recently found this neat and tidy chippy while traveling through Wales. What a lovely place. Superb friendly service from two lovely ladies. Cod and chips for me and the lady wife. Fantastic sausage and chips! The lovely ladies gave me generous portions of chips with great value for money. They were very friendly, and did my order just how I wanted it and were very quick! I highly recommend coming here :)

The Fish and Chips did not disappoint, and that is saying something myself coming from Lincolnshire where we can get fish straight from Grimsby and the potato's are grown on our doorstep. The portions were generous, slightly expensive for a carryout but still worth it. The staff were friendly and helpful, overall an enjoyable experience.

I love this little fish and chip shop. Always fresh and delicious. Staff very welcoming. Be aware it's cash only so come prepared.

The best local chip shop for miles 👌

We had read reviews of poor fare but it turned out to be superb. The fish (cod in batter) may not look much at first sight, being oblong shape, but it is a thick juicy fillet of cod cooked to perfection in a light batter. It is plenty large enough, we were both full at the end of the meal. The chips were also nicely golden, and joy of joys they do mushy peas, as they are not mentioned on their web site! Additionally the staff are very friendly and helpful. We would certainly go there again.

What a great place! Not only are they the friendliest chip shop I’ve ever been to, the food is great! The large cod was a really thick cod fillet, cooked to perfection! The curry sauce is fantastic too! I can’t recommend this shop enough!

The choice was to wait two hours for a shoulder of lamb to slow cook, or nip down the chippy. No contest! Great food as usual, nice one girls.

In Abergavenny for one night and looked up details on trip advisor. Excellent fish and chips fresh well cooked and the first time I was asked if Iwanted a piece of lemon taking out fish and chips. Very friendly place would recommend this little gem to anyone who is in the area.

No Cod or Haddock early Saturday evening - only Plaice.It was breadcrumbed and the fish was quite small and overcooked strongly lacking in flavour- maybe frozen? One person had scampi and enjoyed that and the chips were OK . Would give another try for battered Cod if it was in stock!

Had 2 good steaks at home that needed great chips to go with them (as well as a bottle of Malbec!) Lovely fresh chips, crisp on the outside, fluffy in the middle, friendly service, top shop.

Just had large fish n chips and sorry to say not the best.The chips were nice and non greasy. The fish, a piece which came out of the warmer had very soggy batter which spoiled the meal.I chose this fish shop based on many good reviews but on this occasion didn't deliver. On the way back from Brecon to our B & B via Abergavenny our friends suggested we stop for fish & chips. My partner did a Google search and found this chippie. How pleased we were that we stopped. Great fish & chips. The cod was done to perfection. The staff were very friendly indeed. Will call again when we are next in the area.

Freshly cooked, tasty and great value this small chippie in the village is a gem. Visited on a Friday evening 6pm ish and it was justifiably busy with many locals and a few external visitors. No-one was left out of the serving lady's attention - she was polite, happy and helpful all the times. What a gift.We sat and out our takeaway meals at a table around the back of the chippie - perfect. A young lady called Ava made sure were were looked after etc. Brilliant.Thank you very much indeed

We call this posh as it is very very tasty. Fish is cooked beautifully, not soggy, lovely crispy batter. No mushy chips big think cut chips. Served in a cardboard box, no need to get out of box an put on plate as no grease in box.

Under new management. Friendly staff but chips are always cold and soggy whenever we visit, even at peak times when you would expect the chips to be fresh. The potato fritters are still cold and raw inside.

We were in town and waiting to go to the Rembrance Day concert. We were too early for most restaurants and a tad too late to wait for a sit down meal so we popped to the fish bar where the wall of lovely smells hit you as soon as you entered. Then a nice smile from behind the counter.

Aparecimos en un barco de canal mientras de vacaciones. Nos dejaron lugar para nuestra colección en 30 minutos, así que podíamos pop en el pub por una pinta. Pescado y patatas fritas eran excelentes y con sal, vinagre, limón y salsa incluso el bolsitas en. También tuvimos la faggots y salsa y me pareció demasiado para una persona. La comida es todo lleno de cartón por lo que mantiene caliente mientras caminas hacia el canal.

Realmente decepcionante. Pasta pasada que era un color muy luminoso extraño y una pieza delgada de pescado maloliente gris sobre como plegar el filete grueso mullido que solía ser vendido por los dueños anteriores.

Okay so there have been some negative reviews since the change of owner, but I think things have settled down now. The previous owners did make great fisha dn chips but there was a negative side, if you hadn't pre-ordered the chances of getting anything was slim.The current owners have more on offer for drop in orders and the turn around time is not as long as it used to be. The standard is probably a little lower but the flexibility and order time makes up for that.Off to pick up a friday night order in about an hour...will see if my confidence is repaid..

Ordered a large fish and chips over the phone to be collected on a Friday night. No problems, fish was extremely tasty and the chips were also of great quality! Read all the reviews on trip advisor (mainly the bad) unfortunately reviews do make people doubt going to certain places. Fortunately we decided to try anyway and certainly weren't disappointed! Will be back!

Called in here on the way back from Llan'dod. First visit since the change in owners. I was prepared for it not to be as good as it was. Alan and Faz were amazing, and I doubt anyone could meet their standards. However, this wasn't slightly worse. It was just dreadful. Soggy, poorly cooked food. Most went in the bin.Staff were very welcoming and friendly, no complaint there, but in itself, that would not be a justification for me to return.

visited today not knowing it had changed hands- was best fish and chips have ever had a real treat worth the 20 mile round trip- today was worst iv ever had- chips were inedible curry like water batter on fish had tang of stale oil- gross! so sad those guys were so friendly and did an amazing job for years! :(

The food was always good and the new owners have made a seamless transfer. In fact, the chips seem even better. The range and variety of choices is still excellent.

Ate here today after previously hearing great reviews, wish I hadn't bothered. Chips were well below standard, fish was gorgeous but the portion size was tiny for £4.50 a piece!

I have enjoyed F&C's cooked by the previous owners Alan & Faz. On12/08/16 we decided to try F&C's for the first time from the new owners.I phoned ahead 1 x F&C + 1 x C (because they cook everything fresh - fantastic!) the meal was ready at the time stated. The lady that served me was v pleasant. The F&C's were hot & tasty.

I must say that the fish and chips from this fish bar is freshly cooked and taste fantastic. You get a nice welcome when you arrive and all staff are friendly and approachableI would recommend end this fish bar to all, however you may need to wait as all is for freshly cooked but it's well worth the wait!

I've been ordering our fish and chips every Friday for months however on the last occasion I rang at6.40 and told I could collect at 8pm. When I went to collect them there was the usual wait, then when I was served I was given two absolutely tiny cod. Never again

This is (or rather, was) my local chippy which I previously reviewed as 'Gourmet Chippy'. When Al and Faz ran it, it was the most spectacular chippy for a 100 miles, had a whole raft of food awards including Chippy of the Year and served the best hand-cut, chunky chips the world has ever tasted.The new owners have taken this highly regarded and famous chippy, and reduced it to just another average chip shop.The food isn't bad, the chips are OK, the fish is OK, but considering the former reputation The Village Fish Bar enjoyed, it's now no better than the many other very average chip shops in Abergavenny., It's a sad loss for the area.

In my last review I had ticked July instead of June by mistake and had plenty of good things to say about this once 'favourite' chip shop... Not so anymore... We recently called in for a fish supper expecting the high quality of food we were used to from this venue... That is until we saw the condition of the food a previous customer had ordered... and walked out without placing our order... Will never visit this place again...

The Village Fish Bar used to be my local. I rated it 5 out of 5 as it was easily the best fish and chip shop in the area. Not just for the quality of the food (including hand cut chips), but for the service and attention to detail. This won Alan and Faz best takeaway of the year 2016.Everyone needs to judge the Village Fish Bar under the new owners for themselves. For me, the fish and chips are now very disappointing. The chips are undercooked and soggy, the fish not much better. I genuinely hope the new owners read and take note of the reviews on Trip Advisor. They took over a very popular business with a lot of good will.

This is our local chippy but sadly we didn't know it had changed owners, The new owners appeared friendly, I had pre-ordered our food but had to wait ages before I could get in. This was always the best chippy around but now this is not the case, our chips were a greasy undercooked soggy mess and the fish appeared slimy inside as if not cooked properly with what must have been the batter hanging off it like a sodden dishcloth. the portions were smaller and it was so bad it all went in the bin £15 down the drain .Won't be returning

This is my local chip shop so have used the place many times over the last few years. I've used this place three times since the new owners moved in but since Alan and Faz left the food has gone downhill rapidly. The food was always perfect but now it's just a soggy mess. Won't be using it again. The only bonus is there is always food available for customers now whereas before they would often run out of fish due to the popularity of the place.

What a lovely place to buy a fish dinner... Everyone is so friendly and the food is excellent... I often call in for my fish dinner when I'm in the area... And I'll continue to do so...

I visited at lunchtime today for fish and chips. These were cooked fresh to order and were very tasty. Not greasy or soggy but perfectly cooked. Highly recommended!

Quality has declined since the owner changed, the chips are not the same quality or taste. Equally the batter isn't as good and my curry sauce was poor.That said, it's still very early days for this new owner. The chips aren't that bad, they just went from being exceptional to rather average. Therefore, I hope with more experience things improve in the coming weeks for them.

We have been visiting Gilwern village fish bar for many years. The food and the service has always been out of this world. I've always been happy to recommend the chip shop to all family and friends. Unfortunately this is no longer the case. What once was an organised fresh chip shop has now turned into quite the opposite. Tonight we were very disappointed with the slimey fish and soggy batter with grey undercooked chips. The service was Chaotic with customers at the back of the queue being served first there was no care being taken for the customers waiting. We will sadly not be returning to our regular fish and chip shop. We would just like to that Alan and faz for everything and we are so disappointed that they have now retired and didn't get the chance to say goodbye wishing them all the best in the future :)

Didn't realise the fish bar was under new ownership ...but evident when opened our order at home , although we purchased large fish, they were small and not worth the price , chips were soggy.....won't be going back

oh dear oh dear. This has changed hands recently. Previously excellent, but now poor. The 'small fish and chips' is now a piece of fish the size of 2 fish fingers and covered in greasy, soggy batter, with an increased amount of chips which were grey and soggy. We have enjoyed meals from the shop for 6 years and never been disappointed as each meal would be cooked to order. Unless the new owners raise their game they are going to lose customers quickly.

New owners haven't got to to grips with processing phone in orders in a timely manner.Seem to be running 20 minutes behind schedule, which explains the long queue of customers waiting.

What a cracking little chip shop this is. How often do you go to a take away and get really poor service. Not this place. The staff were great with the kids and kept them amused whilst we waited for our food to be cooked (surely a good sign of any chippy is that your food hasn't sat in the warmer for ages)More importantly the chips and fish were excellent and they had options for a veggie (pea fritter) that is often a problem for use as my wife is vegetarian.This place is worth a little detour if you are visiting the area.

I have visited the fish bar on several occasions and been satisfied , but on 2 visits recently on a Saturday night at orotund 6 pm was advised no cod available. This did annoy me but did not make an entry on this site. But tonight this award winning chip shop could not do me one portion of fish and chips, it was about 6.30 pm I asked for one portion of fish and chips the guy replied sorry cannot do it I am fully booked , never heard such a thing from a hot foot shop..

You know me i love my fish and chips we called here on a day out and they were excellent i had haddock and the wife had cod really nice staff very polite

We loved this chippy. The cod and chips were delicious, we took them back to our boat. Cheeseburger the next day also really good. The food is cooked to order and we enjoyed the wait as the owner is very entertaining. He has jokes for you to read through whilst you wait and he's fun. We went back the next day and didn't phone an order through as we enjoyed the wait (which is less than 10 mins).

This chippy is without doubt the best in the area, meals are cooked to order and the fish and chips are quite the best, you will not be disappointed, order by phone to save waiting, as there can be a queue

Whilst on a canal boat holiday and chatting to a lovely welsh lady helping us with a lock she recommended we stop at Gilwern as the fish and chip shop was excellent. We took her advice and were glad we did - they were delicious! All the food was freshly cooked to order and proper fat homemade chips. Just what we needed after a morning of boating. The staff were so friendly and cheerful. Would recommend this to anyone.Comments from my daughter aged 10:I wasn't going to have anything because i'm a fussy eater, but I'm glad I decided to try it, the food was delicious! You could smell the cooking as you came in, and it smelt great. The staff were friendly and cheerful. I ordered sausage and beans. They cooked the food up on the spot. We took our food back to the boat in nice boxes. All of the food was delicious and a great break from the hard work!

We had some visitors from London last weekend and decided to combine a sightseeing trip with a visit to the Village Fish Bar. Good to find the fish and chips still excellent, fresh, hot, delicious and a generous portion. We had fun talking to the proprietor and his brother as well which was a pleasant bonus. Followed by a trip to Brecon which was beautiful. Very nice day out.

We would never have come across this without Tripadvisor but we are so glad we did. A really great chippy in a village outside Abergavenny, run by two friendly old gentlemen, with a big queue of takeaway seekers. The food was lovely, with nice chunky chips, and worth a short wait to be cooked fresh to order. Thank you.

Have been meaning to visit for a while following excellent reviews. I was not disappointed. Had not phoned to order but only had to wait 10mins from when order was taken. Fish, which was cooked in very light batter and served with a lemon wedge, was the best I've ever tasted from a fish & chip shop. Chips were really good and not swimming in fat. Tried a mushy peas fish cake, which was recommended over the counter. It was tasty and something I had never experienced before. A big thank you 'The Village Fish Bar'

After flying 10 hours and driving for three my wife and I finally got checked into our canal boat on the Mon-Brec and were so happy that the boat owner, John, pointed out the Village Fish Shop to us. We took the dinners back to the boat and after a delicious meal, slept like babies. A perfect beginning to a perfect trip in October of 2013!

Must now be one of the most expensive fish and chips going.Overnight 18% price hike!£13 for two fish and chip takeaways is a bit much.Unfortunately I will be going elsewhere out of principle.

Excellent fish and chips. Many other foods on this great menu. Always best to phone in your order early as they are always very busy. Don't miss out on this great establishment. Service is exceptional.

went here on way home from brum as I was passing and read good reviews of it when got there was told would be 10/15 min wait as all fish cooked fresh so hfish had no taste ad no problem with that but when I eventually received fish chips was not impressed at all the fish had hardly any taste and chips were no great either wont be returning
