Lovely Irish landlady was extremely accommodating to me & my two boys.. Service was how service used to be before the big pub chains took over everything… Food was brilliant.. Had to have the bread pudding as haven’t had it since I was a kid.. took me right back! Definitely recommend and will return 👌🏼

Proper home-cooked grub with the kind of service that makes you feel like you’re part of the family. We had a lovely Sunday roast and highly recommend it if you’re searching for an authentic roast experience.

Lovely cosy pub, quality of the food was excellent with very reasonable prices. The waiter made us feel welcome and have Aspall on tap is always a plus 🍻. Well worth a visit if you're in the area

Went here today 20/1/24 for lunch and i couldn’t fault anything the food was absolutely spot on from the Homemade hunters chicken which my mum who was with us said it was the best one she’d ever eaten anywhere to the gammon egg and chips and also the scampi and chips. I would recommend anyone to try it 10 out of 10 for me . I will definitely be going back.

There's no pretentiousness here, no haut cuisine or bistro menus, that's not what they do. Instead, what they do do is traditional pub food very well indeed. I enjoyed the Steak and Ale pie very much indeed, potentially the best I've ever had. Very polite staff, very good prices.

Such accommodating staff. My sister in law is a wheelchair user & it was no problem at all. During our 2 week stay in Govilon we went 4 times for evening meals.Excellent home cooked food on every occasion. Great value for money too.The owner,staff & locals made us feel so welcome. It had been a wet day for canal boating, and we wanted an easy evening. There was the pub, just downhill from our mooring. We booked, as advised by another publican earlier on our trip; felt foolish as the place was almost empty. But we were welcomed in, seated and served with friendly courtesy. And there was an ever-changing cluster of locals nattering nearby, happy to exchange the odd comment with us. The food was good, the choice of beers likewise. We forgot we had been cold and wet and decided it was a good day.

Tafarn y Bont fitted us in (4 adults and 3 children) on Good Friday. We had an excellent meal, reasonably priced! Best chips I've had for a while!! Highly recommended!

Celebrated my 60th birthday here with family. The food was lovely and plenty of it ! Warm, friendly atmosphere and really cosy. Must try the Sunday lunches soon. We all had a lovely time, Govilon is lucky having this lovely pub in the Village..

Went with family for festive menu on 6th December 22, all I can say is it was amazing value for money and delicious food. 4 courses and a mince pie for £19.90 absolutely brilliant. Will definitely book again as the other menu looked good too. Highly recommend a visit to this quaint country pub.

I had the Steak and Ale pie and it was good, not great. My wife's curry was fine. There was nothing special. We remember this pub as a busy place with good food. We were hoping for a better experience after a day on the canal.

We arrived on Sunday. Went in and asked if they could we could bring dogs in. We were happy to sit outside too yes they said.Excellent!! Did we want food they asked , yes please we said for 9 people . Man sat at the bar ( landlord I guess?) said no can't do it for 9! There were only 3 couples sat inside, no trying to accommodate us at all. Just an abrupt No We will not be back Car of 5 went in behind us no problems. Disappointing attitude 😒

If you are staying anywhere near Brecon, Crickhowel or Abergavenny, make sure you dont miss out on this small historic canal side village and their lovely old fashioned inn. It’s where locals dine and you’ll ge5 to discover the best Steak and Ale Pie ever. Tasty, pure steak pieces and no gristle or fat, only the best cut stewing steak and the tastiest gravy and beautiful hand cut chips. It’s all made fresh on site. So while you wait, the local bees are well kept and served to compliment you choice in pie. Enjoy.

A beautifully prepared Rare Rib Eye served by a waitress who obviously enjoyed her position and was superb at it. Cant wait to return.

We had our first meal there (25-4-2022) our table was book for 7 pm and was ready for us when we arrived the bar staff was friendly it is a lovely local village pub very clean,The food is great value for money the quality of the food and price along with good size meals we will definitely recommend a visit when visit this area we will be book a table again Thank you to all the staff you are doing a fabulous job

Friendly and attentive staff; boss who knows his music and life; Food excellent; great on Sports Days, and at other times relaxing and restful - especially after a good walk (near to the canal, lovely countryside and mountains); range of beverages for everyone: well-kept real ale and good wines, etc; family and pet-friendly. Takes some beating for ambience and friendly locals. What more can you wish for?

Well after following tafarn y bont on this site and Gerry's replies I had to meet him. We found the staff to be amazingly attentive and polite....... The food fabulous I had a steak and next time no cracked black pepper 😂😂 the locals we're so welcoming I wanted to stay the night but had my fill of food and wine. Well done guys see you on Monday for another cwtch (Gerry) xx I'll need the same table 😂😂

Walked inn on a monday evening got looks from the staff and couple of reg things was said i ent being funny a country pub should be warm and welcoming that pub was not never again the owner did not care when on the bandit never had some many dirty looks and talked about i think its wrong want be going again

We were looking for a dog friendly pub while we were on holiday in the area and this place didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and the beer was very good. We also found the locals very friendly as were the staff. We will definitely be going back.

The staff and friendly locals made us feel very welcome. Also a nice few pints of Vale Pale. They were kind enough to let us park our Motorhome in the car park overnight. Also dog friendly which is a big bonus. Food was good too. Strongly recommend this place. I will be returning.

Visited this establishment Saturday afternoon whilst away with my daughter’s athletic club. This is a lovely traditional pub in a beautiful location. Staff were very helpful and the local people were very friendly, we were made to feel very welcomed. Excellent selection of beers and lagers. Great way to spend a relaxing afternoon, definitely will be back next year!

Stopped here for lunch on narrow boat holiday. Great customer service and we felt safe and valued. Super food and beer well kept. Shame that business pressures and covid effect means that pub can’t be open every lunchtime. You need to check times and days. It is worth the visit and highly recommended.

Staying in Gilwern and visited this pub for our evening meal, so pleased that we did. The food was fantastic, the tastiest hunters chicken I have ever had, proper chips and crisp fresh salad all served by friendly helpful staff. Nothing seemed too much trouble...

We visited this pub 5years ago whilst cruising on the nearby canal and wanted to find it again to I troduce our friends to it. Signage on the nearby canal was very confusing as were the canal guide books referring to black lion (now shut)...

Stopped by after a walk along the canal. Ordered fish & Chips and drinks, all was very good enjoyed the food. Strangely, though, we were told if we wanted to eat outside it would cost us more! Reason being that staff needed to leave the bar to take the food out plus condiments etc. We ended up being told the food was ready and then taking it outside ourselves. Seemed bizarre even more so because pub was empty!

Small pub popular with locals. Very traditional pub meal choices. We had fish and chips and hunters chicken. All cooked really well. Limited choice in wine and ran out of Henricks gin but good choice of ale. A bit off beaten path but nice and...

Awful friendly staff but the Thai fish cakes were like trying to eat rubber and luckily very small even if it had been a starter, we won't be rushing back.

Found this place with a last minute Google search before heading home from a bank holiday weekend away. The food was amazing and the landlord was so accomodating as we were a large group of adults and kids, but this didn't phase them. Excellent pub, can't recommend it enough. Lovely canal nearby to walk along too.

Dined out with friends at this beautiful little pub just off the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. The food was excellent, hot, large portions and reasonably priced. The staff were very friendly and the service was quick and efficient. The Chips are to die for. Definitely recommend to anyone in the area looking for a good meal. In addition to the food the pub had a reasonable selection of Craft beers as well as your usual lagers, ciders and smooth flow beer.

Took my grandson for a meal and a drink. Superb food, great ambience and good service at an excellent price. What more could you ask for

Small pub with small car park.. so was a bit problem to park our car, food was ok, we was no waiting very long for it. Problem was with glasses they was smelling badly, stinking so we left all drinks nearly dont touched. thats probably why they have hygiene rating just 2 from 5... Personal was fine, friendly, helpful.
