Lovely, the food is light, fulfilling and dellicately delicious. The tasting menu with wine pairing left me feeling replenished and energised rather than stuffed full. The staff are informative, attentive, and lovely and made our stay very enjoyable . The Whitebrook feels like a doorway to the wild lands that surround and nourish it. Wonderful.

We dined at The Whitebrook restaurant for a birthday meal. For a Michelin star restaurant, the dishes, in our opinion, lacked creativity. The vegetarian menu and standard 9 course menu were lovely, but nothing that blew our mind. We've been to many other 1 Michelin star restaurants that have exceeded our expectations. The service here was particularly poor on the evening - it took the team 20 minutes to bring each course out, so for 9 courses, we were here almost 4 hours for just a table of 2. It also felt as though they were under staffed, as waiters were bolting off to the kitchen to grab the dish for the next table constantly. I was served a fish dish and had to correct them that I'm a vegetarian. We also had no body topping up our water or checking if we are ok for drinks. These sound like minor points but for a place like this, I'd expect top standard service, which we certainly didn't receive here. Also absolutely no atmosphere to the restaurant - there were 6 tables occupied, all in close proximity and no background music in the restaurant. Meaning conversations were overheard by all tables in an extremely intimate and quiet room. It just felt strange overall and we were keen for the experience to end so we could FINALLY get home!

Ok. This could take a while…I’ve read a huge number of reviews of The Whitebrook before posting this. Nearly all say that the food is fantastic (for the most part, it is) and only a few mention the extremely long waits between courses. These delays, over 9 courses, add up to your spending around 4 hours in the restaurant. I’ve eaten in some posh places and never had a 40 minute wait between courses. My husband thought there had to be a problem in the kitchen but, reading other reviews, this time frame seems standard. To be honest, I was losing the will to live by course 8 and we politely asked for the bill which came, miraculously, almost immediately. There were three members of staff that we saw. An older man, the sommelier and a much younger chap who was really nice. The older two could have come straight from Fawlty Towers. Completely stuck-up and cold. Our ‘welcome’ was chilly. Our table was booked for 7:30pm and we arrived at 7:30 pm. The older man paused what he was doing and looked up as we entered the restaurant. Then paused again as if he had no idea we were coming. He said, slightly crossly, ‘oh you are here at last. I’d better take you straight to your table’. Definitely odd. The building is odd too. It looks like three modern houses knocked into one. So why the ceiling beams? Why was the dining room cold (the radiators were off)? It was a dark night and there was insufficient lighting outside the property to show you where to park. Hanging about in the car in the pitch black in a narrow muddy lane trying to decipher faded parking signs is not pensioner fun, I’m afraid. We ended up in the overflow car park with a little trot to the restaurant. This would have been fine but the paths were treacherously muddy and even the concrete block walkway to the door was slippery. When we exited at about 11:15, there was no moon and absolutely no lighting. Luckily, my husband and I had our phone torches. I have to admit to something here. We were supposed to have been eating at The Whitebrook a month earlier. On the very day, my tooth fell into two pieces, with one wobbly bit still in my jaw. There was no way that I could go out to eat like that. We telephoned The Whitebrook immediately and were curtly told that we still owed them the £260 for the meal we’d booked whether we came to eat it or not. This was not particularly surprising as the booking conditions and reminder had all informed us about this clause. However, human decency in this situation did not seem paramount. Some sympathy and an offer to rebook us would have gone a long way. My husband is not easily put off and managed to obtain last night’s reservation by paying £260 on his credit card over the telephone on the spot. Maybe this had something to do with the cold welcome and the odd things the waiter said last night? I know people just decide not to go to restaurants that they’ve booked, leaving the place out of pocket. But this was a real emergency not a silly excuse. At least the waiter could have pretended to believe us. Rude, just rude. If you can bear all these things, the food (when you get it) is very good, if a little lukewarm. But, for God’s sake, take a room for the night then you can sit and drink the rather overpriced wine to fill in the gaps.

We made a really good decision to visit for lunch. Very warm welcome. Excellent setting and nice decor. Only negative was a guest who didn’t have their phone on silent and quite happily took calls, his big booming voice ruining the experience. I know it’s difficult but the team there should politely ask such characters to step outside to take calls. The food was wonderful, with a nice selection of local wines available as well. Incredibly fresh flavours. Well balanced dishes. Overall a good value experience.

My husband and I had their 7-course dinner, and it was absolutely sublime. All the dishes were well-balanced and clean. Even the pork dish, which could be too rich and heavy most of the time, was not. The quality of ingredients and presentation was phenomenal. I thoroughly enjoyed even the dishes with ingredients that I normally would not be fond of. That speaks to the genius of the chef who clearly knows how to combine various flavors to complement and enhance one another. The courses were also perfectly paced, and we felt pleasantly well fed by the end of it all. Honestly, the experience here is underpriced for what you’ll get. Can’t wait to return!

Had an amazing dinner here, would highly recommend. We got the vegetarian version of the 7 course dinner menu, with wine pairings. The food was incredible, they clearly put a lot of effort into their vegetarian courses. The fear at a place like this is that you'll get an inferior experience without the meat dishes, but that wasn't our feeling at all. The wines were fantastic, ones we wouldn't have tried otherwise, and the servers talked us through all courses and wine pairings in a knowledgeable but unpretentious way. Only possible criticism was on a weekday evening it felt a little uncomfortably quiet at times, and I would have loved a better view of the surrounding scenery considering the beautiful location, but that's definitely not going to be my take away. Again, highly recommend for a treat dinner out.

Wonderful hidden gem, in Wales, close to Tintern Abbey, that this Michelin star restaurant. Located in a remote corner, among the hills and woods the restaurant offers locally sourced and fresh ingredients, to be sublimed and transformed by the magic of the Chef. Wye valley asparagus and rhubarb, piglets from local farms, homemade bread, lots of herbs that aren't just here to be fancy but to actually support each bite and tastes. This is one of these restaurant where the difference between "just food" and cuisine is visible and experienceable on every dish. Service is professional while helpful and smiling. Definitely worth the detour if you're around, and Michelin Star properly deserved !

I’d previously visited the Whitebrook a couple of years previously, but never stayed there. I was looking for somewhere to celebrate a very special occasion for my partner and I, and saw a “rooms and food” offer, so booked it. Firstly, the Whitebrook is not cheap, and there are Michelin star restaurants at significantly lower prices, so we were expecting something special. Let’s start with the good stuff: The food was exceptional, form beginning to end. There wasn’t a a single dish we didn’t enjoy, and they adapted perfectly to one of us being pescatarian. The wine was delicious, but very expensive for what it was, and I do feel restaurants shoot themselves in the foot by such markups. Given it was a Thursday, and there were only 8 covers dining in total, I’d imagine they could do with more custom, so why not extend the “winter wine flight” offer of “2 for 1” to attract customers. Regarding the accommodation, the room was clean and served its purpose, but was small, and rather tired, and several fittings either broken or falling off. I realise that it’s “not a Hotel”, but again, the prices should reflect that. Unfortunately, it was the overall ambiance that lets it down badly. The “greeting” upon arrival was about as poor as it can get, and I’m afraid the sommelier is woefully unprepared to welcome guests. Furthermore, he was completely unable to acknowledge or engage with my (female) partner, who felt completely ignored. If Seńor R has a “woman problem” he should perhaps reflect on how that makes people feel. Despite my attempts to engage with him in his local (Spanish) language, his rather surly attitude failed to lighten. Thankfully the waiter Philip was absolutely charming, jocular and the complete opposite of his colleague, and was equally bright and cheerful serving the “tasting breakfast” the following morning. Given the number of covers dining, one might have expected that the Chef himself might have taken it upon himself to pop out and have a short interaction with his customers, but alas that did not happen. If the Chef/owner cannot be bothered, and his “front of house” cannot either, then I’m afraid that despite amazing culinary skills- some of the best I’ve ever had- I’m not sure they deserve to succeed. (I notice that they appear not to read their own reviews, or certainly never take the time to respond to comments, so again……) Did I enjoy it? Yes- the food alone made it worth it. Would I return? Sadly not- or certainly not at these prices.

A long overdue revisit to The Whitebrook, it was to be our second Michelin Starred Welsh restaurant in 2 days. With the focus on ingredients locally sourced, grown and foraged - supplemented with fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden - Chris and his team were awarded a Michelin Green Star in recognition of their sustainable practices and it shines through in the food we ate. Drinks and nibbles in the bar before dinner with a top notch Negroni, before moving into the dining room for our 9 course dinner. The front of house guys, Roman and Zsolt, provide a relaxed and quietly confident service, underlined with a great knowledge of the food and drink offered to their guests. Highlights of the menu were the Severn and Wye smoked eel with seaweed custard, truffle baked parsnip and the main course hogget 4 ways with an amazing rolled belly crisp. However, the halibut poached in Monmouthshire ham fat stole the show - a glorious dish. Having the wine flight with the tasting menu, Roman served some real off the beaten track selections with the “Little Bee” Pinot Gris from Devon and the Hunny Bunny by Judith Beck from Austria really different from the run of the mill choices usually seen with flights and both were a revelation. We took the additional cheese course and Zsolt expertly guided us through the selection of Welsh cheeses on offer with tasting notes and the optimum order to eat them. A real high quality dinner, well paced and packed full of flavour. The next morning, we were greeted with a delicious tasting breakfast menu with sublime sourdough crumpets, lovely bacon, black pudding and Charcuterie from nearby Trealy Farm and the best ever muffins - apple and meadowsweet. The food and service surpassed our previous visit and we will certainly return, our only regret is that The Whitebrook is not located on coastal Dorset!

I've eaten in a lot of Michelin Star restaurants and expect a certain standard not just with food but decor, presentation, table set up, staff attention etc. The Whitebrook was underwhelming from the get go. Not terrible but not good enough that you feel that there has been enough attention paid to detail. I could go on about the peripheral details but I won't. Lets move onto the food itself. We'd contacted The Whitebrook prior to arriving and notified them that one of our party was dairy intolerant. Having done that at other Michelin Restaurants I would have expected alternatives to be in place. Not here. I got served exactly the same as my wife but minus the dairy elements so that each dish looked unfinished and certainly didn't deliver as a complete taste experience that the chef had planned. We're in 2024. Being dairy intolerant or Gluten intolerant is not such a rarity. You'd have thought there would be measures in place to make the diner feel considered for what is an expensive meal and a special evening. I certainly didn't have that feeling here. The other point that was a major turn off for both my wife and I was that each course that had a sauce with it was majorly over seasoned. The sauces were so salty that we couldn't finish each course. We were both really trying to turn a blind eye to the indiscretions at The Whitebrook and to enjoy the final evening of a wonderful long weekend in the area culminating with our gustatory experience at The Whitebrook. We were left feeling very flat and disappointed. Neither of us has ever felt that when leaving a Michelin starred restaurant before. Hope it never happens again.

Phenomenal tasting menu with very interesting flavour combinations. We were celebrating an anniversary and were mindful of the price when booking Dinner, Bed & Breakfast but decided to go for it given the restaurant's reputation. The service is very understated and our welcome when we checked in and the service from the sommelier reflected that, so to that extent our visit didn't feel that special in terms of the overrrall experience. I appreciate this is not a hotel so was not expecting hotel facilities but our room (room 6) was very dark and gloomy and small, and the bathroom was in need of a refresh with poor attention to maintenance. The lounge area for pre-drinks was not the cosiest and lacked the sort of ambience I was hoping for. We didn't opt for the wine flight and asked for the sommelier's advice on a red wine. As the menu lent very much towards white wine choices he looked somewhat disgruntled and his advice amounted to take a look at the wine list and buy what you know and will enjoy - he then walked away! That was a surprise! We were a bit discombobulated by his reaction so switched to a bottle of white without any further advice from him. We did have a chat with him a little later on when he warmed up a bit! We thought we would not spend quite as much if we didn't take the wine flight but we were wrong as the mark up on wine is pretty hefty (not unusual of course). So, in summary, all in all the most expensive evening meal we've ever had and the food was amazing (it does naturally take a while to get through the 8 courses and we only had one gap between courses which seemed a little too long); however as an overrall arrival to departure experience it lacked a certain extra specialness which I was hoping for given the price point.

Stayed for two nights for a celebration. All I can say is that it was faultess. Wonderful service from start to finish. Its remote location is part of the magic, in a beautiful wooded valley running up from the Wye. The rather plain white exterior belies what lies within. An intimate, contemporary, informal restaurant with some great artwork. The food is simply stunning, the default is a tasting menu, but as we were staying two nights we had a la carte on the second night. The very clever use of garden and foraged herbs ran through the whole menu, which delivered a very different and very pleasant experience. Every dish hit the mark without exception. The wine list was exceptional as the was the sommelier, with a very friendly and practical approach. We went with a Welsh white on teh first night and an English red on the second. Both were excllent. Our room was very comfortable and luxurious. Given the small number of rooms and the location on a very quiet lane. The quietness is remarkable, so delivered a very good nights sleep. Onto breakfast, also delivered in a tasting menu style, which was unsusual, with dishes on a par with dinner. All local ingredients cooked to perfection and portion sizes appropiate to the number of dishes.

Long over due review of a local favourite. This is obvs no ordinary local though, instead carefully and thoughtfully prepared garden fresh (ie foraged) food, with brilliant tasting parings and twists (that work) and incredibly, in spite of the many courses, never leaving you feeling over whelmed - ie flavours / cooking approach (v little oil / butter) means its a wonderfully light tasting menu. I am only sorry i havent left a review before - but the staff are consistently welcoming, the wine selection fab - and we are always blown away by the flavours. We loved it when we came first time in March 2019 - the food was brilliant, the staff were great and we left with smiles on our faces. We decided to come back and ended up leaving feeling we had been robbed and very disappointed. The staff were not to the same standard as before and well below par. We weren't given a menu as we had booked the tasting menu....we still wanted to see what we would be eating. One waiter had his shirt untucked for a big chunk of the evening - it wouldn't bother me but I am paying a lot for this service! Someone must have told him eventually. He also had sweat pouring off him later - not really what I want to see as he stands above me serving my food. We asked for the cheese course before the desserts and this seemed to be a massive problem to him; but an adjacent table were offered this choice so it wasn't an unusual ask! We felt some staff members were snobby. We were also charged for a wine flight we didn't have! The food was not as good either. We started eating at 7pm but didn't get to our main until 10pm.... it was like they were slowing us down to be in sync with the later tables. We have done a lot of Michelin star meals but never sat there and thought we were hungry as it was taking that long to get through. The Local Carrot dish was so bitter that it was horrible. The other dishes were very similar style and had a bitterness that needed offsetting with something pickled or sweet. A couple of tables got up to leave before the sweet treats at the end, so I assume they were also thinking it had been a long night! We had been to EPIC (1 star in Belfast) the weekend before and this just made this experience even worse as we were paying £30 more ahead for a disappointing night as opposed to the amazing experience at EPIC. I don't know what has happened at the Whitebrook since the great experience we had in March 2019 but we won't be going back again.

Waste of time and money. Been there to celebrate my wife's 40th back in January. Tasting menu lasted 4h. Food below average, kombucha tasted like a sauerkraut juice from 1£ jar one can find in any Eastern European shop, eel tasted like a marinated herring from the same shop, in a meantime we have been served bread and butter :) tasted the same like my mum used to make (thanks for not charging me 110£ for each dinner mum), decor needs a shakeup, paint flaking of the walls, etc. Etc, but the worst came last and actually this is why I decided to write a review. We been handled a card explaining that apparently man is donating 1£ (literally 1 pound) to some homeless charity from each table in the restaurant and he dares to invite customers to donate more, this I cant comprehend!!! 1£!!!!! we left there about 400£ it's not even 1% SHOCKING!

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.
