Blimey is this place expensive, £20 for a Burger and chips! But this really was a lovely place to go for a family lunch. Service was faultless and staff took a keen interest in our 8 month old daughter, which was nice. Tried the local beer and that was beautiful and refreshing. Had to chuckle though: the child's beef burger was nearly the same size as the adult one. Hysterical.

We booked for Sunday lunch for 4 people it was a Xmas present to our parents, we arrived early to have a drink we were told there is nowhere to sit before our meal so the waitress said to sit at our table early and have drinks there instead the waitress seated us but didn’t take our drinks order I had to ask another waitress 10 minutes later to order drinks then one of the waiters came to table too take our order for lunch We ordered bread and olives for 4 people before it arrived the waiters bought out our main course before we had our nibbles so they took it back to the kitchen . then our nibbles arrived we finished them the plates were all left on the table awaiting for someone to clear them nobody bothered so then the waiters bought our Sunday lunch out they tried to put the plates down on a already full table of empty plates they were just trying to put them down anywhere then another waiter came over to take some of the plates away It seemed no one knew what the other person was doing The veg we had was mashed carrots which was so salty we could not eat it there was a very small portion of French beans with it Cauliflower cheese looked very nice but was tasteless the dinner was Luke warm plates cold Gravy was like thin brown water One of the waiters came around us to offer mint sauce, horseradish he decided to serve across the table the mint sauce spilling it as he served it Nobody came over to us to ask about the meal they served us or to offer if we required anymore drinks I had to ask a waiter to order drinks we spoke to a lady about the vegetable saying how salty it was she took some of plates back to the kitchen She came back agreeing there was a problem with it she offered us complimentary coffee which we had This person was the only person who looked after us The Sunday lunch we had we all thought it was very expensive for the quality of food it was not up to the standard of fine dining Table Service was extremely poor quality for the standard of the angle portrays For a bill of £200 for 4 people for Sunday lunch is not acceptable We felt the dinner was tasteless compared to when visited before We have visited a few times before and had a great experience Shame the standards have dropped

What a LAZY SUNDAY LUNCH. We ordered lamb which was just okay, 3 roast potatoes 2 spoon full of mashed swede and carrot, 3 spoons of cauliflower cheese and 2 spoons of frozen string beans. All for £ 58 for two, are they joking?? No real current veg.only cheap easy mass produced food.waiters seemed as if they didn’t want to be there. Exceedingly disappointed.

After visiting the Christmas food market what better end to the shopping than a visit to The Angel. Lovely Christmas decor as well as a great option to have the All day Menu as well as Sunday lunch. Pheasant leek and mushroom pie a winner and the fish and chips always excellent. Tart tartin as good as anything in France. Food and service excellent. If you’re visiting Abergavenny before Christmas it’s worth a visit.

Firstly what lovely staff they're a credit to the hotel. My Mum is 86 & finds sometimes she's too low at the table. Before we said anything the man (restaurant manager/head waiter)asked if she would like a cushion so that was very kind. We both had the pork which was lovely, very tasty. I was a little disappointed in the flavour of the small trio of desserts, so I was glad I didn't have a normal portion of any of them. Very unusual for me to not finish a dessert but the mandarin & pistachio Eaton mess tasted like soap to me & my Mum tasted it & thought it wasn't nice too. Choc & cherry very rich & I love Frangipane tart but it was too rich with mincemeat so dessert was a let down but everything else was superb. I would recommend to others.

Six of us had a nice dinner a couple of days ago. Lovely venue, art deco atmosphere with a nice and welcoming staff. We had a couple of bumps ordering drinks (you will need to clearly identify what you are asking for) however, the staff quickly wanted to fix the issue without any hesitation. Food was good, a really nice complementary pork belly taster was delicious, really nice fresh bread. We had spaghetti with crab an interesting and tasty dish. One issue with the fish dish which was over cooked, again the staff took the feedback with appreciation and then comped one of our bottles of wine (unexpectedly) so services and attention to detail was great. I would recommend.

The staff were phenomenal, very attentive but didn't hover. Wonderfully friendly and joyful. Made us feel very comfy and not rushed at all. We had a beautifully delicious meal, to start we made our way through the delightful seafood platter between four and we were very satisfied, so asked for a break which they were very respectful of and didn't rush. When we were ready we asked for the main, which was just as delightful as the starter. All the food was phenomenal and couldn't speak more highly of the staff.

Been 6+ years since our last visit to Abergavenny, in the past for the food festival. Having sampled a few of the excellent restaurants the town has to offer, including the Walnut Tree now owned by the same group, surprised we hadn't done the Angel; an error we very happily corrected. A quiet Monday lunchtime still had enough buzz in both the Oak Room, where we were, and the Foxhunter Bar and the multiple menus - available in both areas - was a masterstroke. We probably would have given both the Lunch and All Day menus more attention, but having unexpectedly run into family who live there ( couldn't make it up! ) they suggested to miss the 'deal' that is their Prix Fixe, if we liked the dishes, would be to miss a trick...and boy were they right. We mixed up both the starters and mains and they were simply superb. Add service that would not have gone awry in a 5 Star hotel in any Capital, and a lovely birthday gesture, simply from overhearing it's mention, was a truly professional touch. Planning on now making this a quarterly ( if not monthly :-) ) lunchtime notation in our Callender. First Class.

The Angel's Oak Room has long been the place to go where you can count on it being excellent food and good service. This time the food, except the bread which has become an issue, was excellent but the service due to some poorly trained new staff was very poor. There are some wonderful people who work here that we have known for years. Wake up management and deal with the new staff that are damaging your reputation. And.. You have your own bakery, why be mean with the bread?

A bit sad to do this, as we dined at the Oak Room in June 2022 and it was a 5 star experience. Unfortunately this time, we were seated around 8:15 pm on a Friday and then absolutely ignored by the servers for almost 30 minutes. The restaurant was maybe 1/3 full, so not busy at all. After 10 minutes, we were forced to call out to a passing server just to get water. The waiters continued to ignore our table, which was in plain view. They stood at other tables and chatted with the patrons, most of whom they obviously knew as regulars. While it's certainly nice to have such friendly waiters, not at the expense of other diners like us! At 30 minutes in, worried the kitchen would soon be closing and ready to leave without dinner, we were forced to ask for attention from one of the waiters. He was one who had served us so ably and attentively back in June, but tonight, even though he stood chatting for 10 minutes to another table 15 feet away, he totally ignored us. We then ordered dinner but by the time it arrived at 9 pm, we had lost our appetites over the appalling service. I'm American and not shy about confronting a waiter in a very busy restaurant when I'm ignored or overlooked. However my wife is British and would be appalled by such manners in a serious place like the Angel Oak Room, especially when it was not even busy. After looking forward to this dinner for weeks, sadly we had a thoroughly lousy time and I don't think we could return or recommend it.

Considering the prices, I was expecting bigger portions and better service. The restaurant seemed quite (a few tables were taken but it wasnt full). Three of us share a starter of oysters for which we waited for 20 minutes. Then, we had to wait for quite a while again (40-45 minutes) before our mains came and no one bothered to come and tell us we would have to wait or came to ask we needed more water or drinks while we waited. We ended up going somewhere else for dessert as we didn't want to stay for another hour waiting for dessert. The food was okay, but not impressive. There are probably more affordable restaurants around that would provide better service.

I think the Oak room have a lot to think about. The meal was by no means bad. But not up to the standard of their reputation. Their prices are premium for the area. So service and quality should reflect. The restaurant is very well presented and at first staff are very helpful and attentive. We found as the night went on, the service became sparse and inconsistent. The quality of the food was excellent, however the dishes were often conflicting. They also ran out of mussels by 7pm which seems strange. This may be person preference but, as a group, we found the portions were way too large and often the flavours were at odds. A good example being the spicy lentil burger. It was essentially a reduced lentil Daal compressed into a patty and put in an American style burger including pickles, a tomato and lettuce. The Indian flavour of the patty was at odds with the American flavours of the bun filling. In several of our meals, there was simply too much salt on the chips to taste anything. The starters and desserts were the best parts of the meal. But again, portions wer nearly twice the size of what I was capable of eating. The portion sizes in general were massive. My whole family are average sized and rarely struggle to finish a meal were beaten by the main course. We found that the eggs and rice were over cooked. And in general the flavours were conflicting and not massively enjoyable. The general consensus from our table is that portion sizes could have been halved. Flavours could have been improved and prices maintained whilst still providing value for money. We’ll definitely visit again in case it was a fluke. But first impressions have been somewhat disappointing.

A really disappointing visit. We were offered a complimentary appetiser ahead of ordering and despite stipulating I was a pescatarian, I was served a ‘vegetarian’ spring roll that turned out to be duck. Following a mouthful, I felt it was either meat or the most authentic veggie substitute I had ever encountered and asked my partner to try it, he confirmed it was 100% duck. Despite asking the waiter to confirm if it was vegetarian he said it was and I asked him to check with the chef. He disappeared. I had to ask another waiter when he took our order to confirm whether it was indeed meat and he also had to check with the chef. For a restaurant selling starters for circa £17 this is just unacceptable service, even McDonalds can get this one right. We were given our wine for free as a good will gesture but by this point the entire experience had been soured. It was a shame as other than a handful of rubbish waiters - a couple were very good. At this price point you expect a lot more from the service and the food and on this basis I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to any friends and family visiting the area.

We booked for lunch, when we arrived and shown our table. You could touch the next table where two people were sat. A lot less than 2m apart. And the table was by a busy walk way with people (other diners) constantly walking behind us Asked If we could move, Shown to second table and similar, back to back with another person less than 2m away. You could honestly touch the person sat behind you. Very worrying given COVID 19 requirements. We were ready to leave as we didn’t feel as though enough precautions were being made with spacing between tables. Waiter said that he had reviewed seating plan and there was another table. Which was still close to another table but a lot better than first two. Food and service were great. We appreciate that there is a need to maximise revenue following recent government led closures but equally we didn’t feel precautions had been made with tables close.

The dinner was part of the governments scheme to support to get back to normality. The meal costs was heavily discounted but the hotel was supplying poorly cooked food. My wife and I both had the special which was the gammon. The gammon was a small size piece which was heavily salted. The portion was undercooked with the fat very soft. The accompanying chips had pieces of precooked chips that were crumbling and solid. We were unable to use our forks to eat the chips as they were over cooked. We had to resort to use of our fingers. Shame! The hotel used to supply first class food but not at this time.

We are regular visitors to The Angel for afternoon tea and dinner; this was our first visit since they reopened after lockdown, and we were really excited for some nice food. There was only one vegetarian option which was a watermelon salad; this is really disappointing, vegetarians are a bit tired now of only being offered something with mushrooms or a salad. At least offer some more veggie options...I ordered a fillet which is ridiculously expensive, however as it was the first time we ate out in months I thought why not. I asked for it medium and it arrived medium to well, so I didn't enjoy it as well as I could have but I was far too hungry to send it back. The main issue was lack of service. Our drinks had been empty for some time and I couldn't get the attention of anyone, despite the restaurant being half empty. When I did eventually order a drink the wrong one arrived, so I walked to the bar myself and asked for them to make what I actually ordered. Then it failed to arrive for 10 minutes, and I had to ask for it again. Seriously, if you're going to charge £16 for a salad and £35 for a fillet, you don't expect to have to walk to chase your correct drink yourself. Also, constantly trying to get a waiter/waitresses attention is frustrating, when you could be chatting and enjoying your evening. I hope things are better next time.

Visited for lunch for my birthday. I had visited the Foxhunter Bar for drinks before but this was my first time at The Angel for food. It will not be my last. Lovely stylish setting. We were welcomed by the head waiter who was fantastic. He took time to welcome and chat to every table showing genuine interest in all his customers. It’s very rare these days you see this level of interaction, he was a breath of fresh air and really sets the tone. He genuinely seemed to know most people and as it was our first visit made us feel very welcome. All of the staff were professional, warm and clearly trained to deliver a high level of service. Situated at the front of the hotel we sat overlooking the main road. It was a busy lunch time and we had not made a reservation but were accommodated with no fuss. The menu was a choice of set courses or the lunchtime menu. We opted for two courses for £26 per person. The mushroom soup was superb and the main dish of pancetta chicken with gnocchi was delicious. I can highly recommend it. We didn’t have dessert as we were full but they looked amazing. Wine was lovely and so was the coffee. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. I can assure you that this is by far the most stylish, understated superb food service and atmosphere I have had in a very wide radius at lunch time and it’s head and shoulders above its peers. Ok positive constructive critic, we were wondering around inside and out looking for a table as opposed to being shown one? Despite 3 members of staff watching us walk in the front door past the piano player. We found a table outside we were given menus but after ten mins my girlfriend decided that this was too long so went to the bar to order some drinks.Food was good and bad my halibut steak was tricky to eat navigating through a whole barrage of bones and at £24, 7 new potatoes and zero vegetables was a tad overpriced. I'm not a keyboard warrior so I will say my partner enjoyed her fish pie and it did look good, but if you are going to spend £55 on lunch for 2 meals and 2 drinks you essentially expect complete satisfaction.

We were here for a very significant birthday weekend, indeed half the party had flown in for the occasion. It didn't start off well with pre-dinner drinks taking 20 minute to arrive whilst sat waiting for two of the party to arrive and as soon as the drinks were ready they wanted us to take the table we had booked - even though there were now two more people who needed a drink while we all said hello (we were still before the table booking time). After a short delay we decided to move to the table, the dining room is nice, although we can't quite get out head around the random pillars in the room, that don't really 'do' anything for the layout nor the experience. When it came to ordering we actually had to get up and find someone to take our order, having had three different staff walk past and see the menus were closed and we were ready. The manager on duty (we assume as he was directly all other staff) took the order, hurriedly and without much service. It was frustrating, we had heard very good things about this place. The food when it arrived looked nice - but when the waiter asked 'who ordered the steak' (we had one, but it was already on the table) we said no one, he loudly huffed and turned round and returned to the kitchen, re-emerging with the same dish a few seconds later and said 'who ordered the lamb'. Staff who don't note who ordered what, who huff when they don't do their job properly and who don't know what the dishes are really badly let down an establishment that's charging the prices the Oak Room is.That aside the food was all exceptional and that's the most frustrating thing - the kitchen and the chefs are getting this spot on, the tastes, textures and combinations were all very good - from the bone-in-steak to the pork cooked many ways it was very good indeed. As was the special dish requested for one of the children.Alas the front of house let it down, and badly, This would have been a 5 star meal but at no point should anyone have to get up from a table and go and find staff to do the job they are there for. Annoying for the owner to read i'm sure, but it happened and it shouldn't have.

There were salad leaves but no dressing or tomato or cucumber on the side of the plate. I had crab shell in my crab sandwich and I was told it was because the crab was shelled by hand. Ok, but it was not worth £13. Service was fine but I will not be rushing back to eat here.

The reason I've marked you down is that I thought the waiting staff could have engaged in conversation it did not appear that busy and the price of soft drinks and also the sweetcorn. The banter with both of them helped make our evening one to remember, and I passed on my thanks to the chefs for the meal. I would recommend the Oak Room for any meal, and for a celebration a certain place to dine.

Had main course and dessert. All very nice, creamed potato salty. Pavlova delicious. Overpriced compared to similar standard in a restaurant but much nicer than our experience at The Walnut Tree 18 months ago.

Had a lovely lunch here with the sun streaming in , Fish and chips cooked to perfection and helpful and friendly team serving . The main meal was slightly more expensive than I would want for Fish and chips so not sure on value the only reason not at 5 stars. £18 is steep given that I paid £15 at Rick steins !! . Will be back to try more

This is my favourite restaurant in Abergavenny, and I always try and visit at least once a month. The latest visit was this week (ending Fri 3 May) along with several family members. It was a very enjoyable evening and everyone agreed it was the best evening meal out of the three restaurants we visited this week. I can thoroughly recommend The Oak Room for its food, ambience and excellent service.

We had a lovely meal here on Saturday. Crab starter was amazing, as was the lamb mains. Very happy. Finished off with Rhubarb and ginger custard tart. Perfect. Only complaint was that we felt a bit rushed by the staff. They started to clear away plates while my wife was still eating, but once I asked them to stop, it was fine. I really like the authentic 20s feel of this place. Definitely recommend for a good value meal with interesting and exciting menu choices!

Unfortunately we didn't even get to try any food since after waiting so long without anyone even approaching us for even our drink choices (despite 2 other groups who had arrived after us receiving theirs and their food ordered!); we decided to leave (members of group even had eye contact with staff to get attention to no avail).

Having had a superb lunch here on a previous visit, we didn't hesitate to bring friends here. Still very good - the onion bread was to die for (and we were provided with 'refills' after devouring the lot), and I especially enjoyed the onion and cider soup - smooth and deeply flavourful. My husband's steak sandwich was gorgeous and much enjoyed by him; our friends loved their selections from the set 'Angel Menu'. Excellent service, good ambience. The only thing which prevents me giving it 5 stars again was the price - the set menu was considerably more expensive than on our last visit, and didn't represent such good value for money, especially for vegetarians.

21st February 2019 - Dinner for 5 (ages 21 to 64). This is in the stylish and immaculately clean Angel Hotel. The Oak Room has decent sized and reasonably spaced tables. Decor is muted and elegant. Service efficient and professional. Food excellent - my wife raved about her mussels (taken as a main course), and my scallops were large and delicious as a starter, which unfortunately had to be shared with everyone! Goos pork belly main too, and nice puds. This was for my daughter's 21st birthday and it was indeed a special treat in a lovely restaurant. Highly recommended.

Having had a sunday lunch at this venue before (which was excellent) I had no hesitation in booking another-as `a special treat`- because lets be honest- it is not cheap! And, I firmly believe `you only get what you pay for`. Hence, expectations were high! But, on this occasion we were left very disappointed. The bread was fabulous-the soup- leak and potatoes: fabulous. BUT the main dish: roast lamb, roast potatoes, veg`,etc...was to put it bluntly: disgusting! The lamb `tasted of liver`(?) I have never tasted anything like it !!! But as I like `liver` I ate most of mine. But, my partner promptly left all of hers (and an elderly gentleman sitting next table- left all of his!) So, it wasnt just me. Also, the roast potatoes were `extremely poor` As I suspect they were `reheated` as they were not crispy and completely tasteless ( and I normally love roast potatoes- cooked in goose fat! ) Then, we have the veg`...the only thing I could recognize was the baby carrots. But, as `I try anything` I tasted the others- only to find out `it was beetroot`(?) But, again, I like beetroot- just strange to discover it with a roast dinner? (roast parsnips-yes please!) But, beetroot? Another surprise was when I requested a glass wine :Liebraumilch and because it wasnt on their wine list- they had never heard of it (one of the most popular wines in the world) strange? I spoke to the `front-of-house` about our experience- and all she could do was say how sorry she was- and at £72-00...I was very sorry- as well!

We had a small family get together recently on a busy Saturday afternoon in Abergavenny. After hanging around in reception at The Angel Hotel for a few minutes we deduced which room was the restaurant (there are no signs and many rooms). However this was a small hiccup. The service, atmosphere and importantly the food was excellent. Service was attentive but not OTT or too formal. All the staff were professional yet friendly. We all ate something different, including fish, sandwiches and vegan options and all enjoyed very much. I would recommend booking to ensure you get a table.

We came here as a family of six for lunch. The restaurant is very attractive but in December it would have been nice if the big fire could have been lit. The food and wine was delicious. I had the prawn cocktail starter, which was a very hearty serving, then excellent rare roast beef with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever seen. Chocolate brownie from the kids menu for dessert was very good with a shiny dark ganache on top. I had a lovely glass of Bollinger to start and the Malbec by the glass was amazing. The service was friendly and overall efficient , and this would have been a 5 star review but for the fact the drinks and food orders were out of sync. I ordered a drink to go with each course yet in every instance, my food came first, which I hate, and I had to sit there and wait for my drink to arrive as much as 5 minutes later. They need to link up the drinks service so that drinks arrive before or with the food. But otherwise a very good dining experience.

Without any preplanning we wandered around Abergavenny to find some decent food - historically not so easy in the town which is not an obvious tourist magnet, especially in November. The Angel's dedicated vegetarian and vegan menu was an immediate draw. We weren't drseed up, having copleted a long walk earlier in the day. The staff were very friendly, and the food excellent. Very impressed and will be back, as the menu gives us lifelong veggies multiple choices!

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious lunch with champagne on the 6th of October 2018. We both had mussels mariners to start. This was followed by a perfect steak and prawn main course. The food was just perfect, the service was really good and the ambience was the perfect for us. The restaurant was busy but this didn't affect our experience. Surprisingly underwhelmed by our dining experience. Our cocktails (pre dinner drinks) took ages to arrive & no sooner had they been delivered to our table our starters were served. The wine we ordered arrived before our cocktails. We were offered no bread & decided to question one of the waiters who then brought some but there was no apology & this was brought to our table after we had finished our starter & only just before our main course. Such a shame but there was obviously no communication between the staff on the bar & those serving guests & staff in the kitchen. Three of the staff decided to have a disagreement in the dining area which was unacceptable in my book. The staff were noticeably harassed & sressed due to how busy it was but this spoilt the atmosphere. Also, there were errors on our bill. I expected so much better. The evening was spoilt by very simple errors. We would have stayed on in the bar to have drinks afterwards but felt so let down we went elsewhere. We are local residents & had friends staying over so thought the Angel would make a good night out but we will be dining & drinking elsewhere next time.

Met here for a family gathering at lunchtime on a Sunday. Food was fine along with the service (which although not particularly attentive), was fine as well. Reasonably priced but although worthy of a quick text home, was not worth 'writing' home about. Lovely building which is well maintained with efficient staff. Not (in my view) a destination Hotel but worthy of a visit.

Having had a very nice high tea at this hotel, we decided to book the Oak Room for Lunch. The Oak Room is at the front of the hotel opposite the reception, it is a tranquil room with a high standard of furnishings. Having parked at the rear of the building and approached from that direction a member of staff escorted us through the hotel to our table. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful through our lunch. There was a good variety of starters, mains and deserts on the main menu. They also offer a fixed menu of either two or three courses for £25/£30. This also offers choices from 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 deserts. The quality of the food was excellent and all in all we had a very pleasant lunch.

I love the Angel. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is cosy, it looks beautiful and for a 'posh' hotel it is very welcoming to all. So we took a large family group for Sunday lunch. It was very disappointing. The potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were dry and there was no gravy on the table, only what we had given to us with the meat. No staff came to check if we wanted anything so we couldn't ask for it. The kids had pasta and it really wasn't nice so they didn't eat it. However, the lovely hostess who checked on us at the end was very nice and apologised for the lack of gravy and didn't charge us for the kids meal. I would definitely recommend The Angel just not for Sunday lunch.

Wedding anniversary meal which we were looking forward too.Service was excellent however we were both disappointed with our meal.We both had soup to start Red pepper & tomato which was 'chilli' hot which was not in the description on the menu. When mentioned to waiter he took no notice!I had the Chargrilled steak which at best a cheap peice of braising steak sauce really thick 3 small pieces of broccoli and 3 small potatoes. My wife had the Monkfish and has been unwell all day.Really disappointed and expected a lot more.

My husband planned a birthday treat meal at The Angel Hotel, Oak Room restaurant as a birthday treat. It was wonderful from the moment we arrived. A lovely aperitif grapefruit gin and tonic in the bar when we arrived, followed by a delicious 3 course meal in the restaurant. The food was perfect, service exceptional. I was concerned beforehand that because we were eating on a Monday night it may be a bit atmosphereless but not at all. It was private but also comfortable and we certainly did not feel pressured into finishing our meals. Looking forward to returning again soon.

We recently took my elderly parents for afternoon tea because they had visited often in the past when they were independent. We met Kevin who was absolutely delightful and brilliant at helping them both, particularly as my Mum was in a wheelchair. His service and care was exceptional which made it easy and enjoyable and Mum and Dad loved chatting with him, he went the extra mile to make it extra special and the cakes were indulgent!

Spent a night here for my Wife's birthday. Beautiful location with a real sense of 'getting away'. The Bell has a lovely, welcoming vibe and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Evening meal was fantastic and I thought portion sizes were great with every dish being on point. Would definitely recommend and will visit again, whether that be for another stay or just to visit the restaurant. Cracking pint of Butty Bach there too!
