We have been to the Winking Man many times over the last few years. The food quality is good and the price is very reasonable. We visited in the summer and got served outside which was great, however the following day was told we couldn’t be served outside and needed to sit inside? However we weren’t allowed our dog inside. Ultimately we had to go further down the road to another pub that day, as the rules seemed to have changed. We will be visiting again and hopefully can order outside

We really enjoyed our visit to the Winking Man last week. Due to restrictions, we dined outside in one of the lovely heated pods. It was great to see the investment that had gone into the pods which allowed us to dine well into the evening. The beer was great and the food was fantastic too! The staff seemed really happy to be back and were very attentive. Will definitely be returning!

Visited here while staying at a near by holiday park. Due to Covid restrictions it was only outdoor seating. It was a lovely day but a bit chilly but we managed to sit by the outdoor heaters which made it better. Staff nice and friendly, we ordered 2 drinks, hunters chicken and chips and a chicken burger with chips and salad. Food was lovely the best part were the homemade chips - never had such delicious chips anywhere when dining out! Reasonable prices 2 meals and 2 drinks for £23. Would return again if in the area.

Yet again food and service was great, every time me and my wife visit we are never disappointed or have any complaints. I went for the Texas burger today and it was delicious while the wife had the cheese tart. Both plates were well presented and portions were spot on. I got greedy though and decided have a pudding and now in a food coma back at the lodge where we are staying. The team seem to be doing the very best they can with the current COVID situation I just hope it doesn’t hit them to hard as this really is a fantastic pub. Thank you again and see you in the future.

For those that want to know why it was brilliant just check the Winking Mans website for opening times etc, best give them a call to reserve your table, then Pop ST13 8UH into your maps thingy and pay them a visit. When you get there YOU WILL find it super covid safe with a very logical one way system, the staff are all wearing visors and are really friendly, the service is efficient, the portions are large and it’s real food cooked as you request, the atmosphere is relaxed and the owners are visible and happy to chat, I Like that and would advise you try the Winking Man out for yourself you will LOVE IT !

Me and my boyfriend came for dinner here and it was lovely. We phoned late to see if a table was available, as we were on our way back to our hotel and wanted to pop in on the way past. they did mention they were fully booked but booked us in for a later table and we had drinks outside - where they offer heaters. 5 mins after being outside they said a table was available. Having an onion allergy and being pescatarian it sometimes makes going to places for dinner hard or gives me limited options, the waitress took down all my allergy’s and spoke with the chef. As then the only thing i could have on the menu was fish and chips (i’d had at a place previous and didn’t want it again) they came back and offered me something completely different. it was a lovely touch and made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. So thank you. The tables were well spread out, and they had an in and out door and sanitiser dotted around. The what looked like owner cleaned and sanitised the toilets whilst i was there and all staff were wearing visors. The pub was super busy but it didn’t effect the service at all. thank you for a lovely evening and being accommodating.

Late lunch visit. We ordered the lasagne- good portion but extremely dry. And the steak- dry and not cooked to requested. Lucky it was ‘Eat Out To Help Out’, because we would have been fuming if we had been asked to pay full price. Considering they are COVID friendly and it is supposed to be table service only, we were only visited when ordering food and when it came to the table. Nobody checked on us in between, and we had to keep going to the bar for acknowledgement. Really disappointed.

Visited a couple of evenings ago whilst staying in the area. Table booked and arrived at given time and quickly shown to table and drinks ordered. Then we waited and waited and eventually after 25 minutes I went in search of a waitress to order our meals. We ordered two sirlon steaks which came with a choice of chips or jacket potatoes, peas and mushrooms. After another 30 minutes our food was delivered to our table, small portion of steak, chips, small portion of peas and one button mushroom cut in half but unfortunately no mushrooms on my wifes plate. We managed to find a waitress who said she would fetch a portion from the kitchen but they did not have many left and when they arrived it was a small dish with two button mushrooms cut in half.My steak was bland and tasteless and my wifes was so dry and tough she struggled to cut it and gave up in the end. When the waitress came around to ask if everything was OK with the food we told her of our displeasure with the quality of the steak and she said she would inform the kitchen. When she reappeared she apologised and jokingly said the kitchen would have to change their butcher if the meat was so poor but no one from management came to us to ask any further questions and listen to our complaint knowing we were disappointed but I did tell the young waitress I would be leaving a review on Trip Advisor for them. Just so we didnt have a spoilt evening we ordered apple pie and custard which was very good. Fortunately Rishi Sunak and the tax payer was footing part of the bill for the meal as at £13.95 for each steak they are way below the standards of Wetherspoons or any other pubs which would be half of their price and I would not have paid full price for the quality and quantity we received. We also noticed that local people appeared to get larger portions than us but obviously we will probably never go in again so our custom does not matter to them. The service was also very slow and a two course meal took around two hours although the pub was not particularily busy.

When you go in, you have to give over contact details & wait to be seated by the staff. There are arrows to follow in the pub & there are screens with the Winking Man name engraved on them separating most of the tables from each other. Food is served Wed – Fri 12.00 – 14.30 & 18.00 – 20.30 hrs.All day Sat 12.00 – 20.30 hrs & Sun 12.00 – 19.30 hrs. There is a new smaller A4, two sided laminated menu. There is also a reduced specials board as well. Only four items when we were there.Decent sized car park to the left hand side of the pub.Seating available outside though as most people were eating, most of the people sat inside.Only one very poor quality real ale available.Food service was ok, not the quickest nor the slowest. The portion sizes of the special options were small to me. What was annoying was staff taking so long to bring the bill to you when you had finished eating, yet happily came too inquired if you wanted more drinks when eating.

Called up and booked in 2 x vans, advised we would be eating and drinking here also. When we arrived, we asked what time the food was served until, to which we were told 20:30. So, we set off on a long walk for the afternoon, got back at around 19:30 to be told we can't have any food as we hadn't booked a table. There were lots of free tables inside but were told we couldn't book as they were an hour behind on food so had no time for us. We asked if we could order a take away and eat it outside, we were told no, to then see another table order and receive a pizza delivery and were allowed to eat it INSIDE the pub. Best advice, please book and you won't be left with an empty stomach after a long walk. I won't be going back here as I felt we really we a nuisance to them. I understand times are difficult but there was clearly a lack of communication between the day staff and evening staff. Giving an 'average' and not 'poor' rating as Kate (bar lady) really did try for us and did all she could however, it clearly wasn't her decision.

Ordered fish and chips and my husband winking man's chicken. People who came in after us received their food while we were still wating. When it came it was cold. They took mine to heat up as I can't eat cold food. Then they quickly brought mine hotter obviously microwaved. My husband accepted to eat his cold as he's reluctant to complain but the sauce was awful and very salty. The chips for both meals looked and tasted as if they were yesterday's chips. We weren't sure if they were though they were very dry with a weird brown colour. On our way out we saw chips on other people's plates and they looked freshly cooked, like fresh chips should look, unlike ours. Truly disgusting. I felt sick. Food should be hot and freshly cooked.

I have been visiting the Winking Man for years having not living very far from the pub. In all the years i've been visiting me and my family have never been dissapointed. The pub has a brilliant atmosphere with cosy decor and log burning fire. The menu is varied and the food is brilliant, and the staff are lovely. Nothing is to much for Pete, Julie and the team and they do the best so you can enjoy your visit. At Christmas my Family is quite big and we have a annual Family Christmas meal, this year there was 55 of us eating a three course meal on a Saturday night. We've been doing this for years at various local pubs (that can fit us all in!), and my relatives all remarked that this was the best by far, for value, the quality of food and the prompt service, they was very impressed how fast the team got the food out. I would highly reccommend the Winking Man for any type of meal you fancy. Me and my family often go on the Steak night on a Thursday and the peppered steaks are delicous. This is one of the best pubs around for friendliness, and a welcoming atmoshere! :)

The Winking man never fails to serve great tasting food. The peppered rump steak is full of flavour, the potato and leek soup is tasty and textured perfectly, and the Sunday roast dinners are absolutely amazing, the gravy is so distinctive and moreish. If you like home cooked food in a cosy and friendly environment then this is the restaurant for you. The only constructive criticism I could give them is after around 2.30pm onwards particularly on a Sunday there is more often than not no roast dinners left; I would suggest having more stock for the afternoon available as people can't always make it early afternoon. But overall, lovely people, great food and dinner with a view!

Stumbled upon the Winking Man and gave it a go after seeing the positive reviews. Bar staff were friendly and helpful but unfortunately other than that there was little to be impressed with. The wait for food was long and when it came it wasn't really anything to get excited about. The garlic mushrooms seemed to be based in cream of mushroom soup, burger which was literally a shop produced burger patty in a dry bun, and the brie crumble was basically a plain cheese sauce with a couple of vegetable pieces in.

Saturday night, my daughter's 30th birthday was certainty something she'll never forget. We booked for 20 people filling most of the dining room comfortably. Julie had put banners up constructed a personalised cake. All the food ea6s excellent. Everyone ordered in small groups after settling in. It all came out promptly. Steaks cooked as requested. All modifications correct and the two waitresses knew who'd ordered what. They certainly know how to get the food put efficiently. Perfectly cooked chips. By far the best chips up in these hills. After a short break the disco and karaoke started. I think we hogged the floor for the first hour. Pete's mix of dance tunes interspersed with customers attempts kept the evening going. There's some talented performers up in those hills, but some need a bit more practice. Plenty of interaction between the visitors and locals made for a memorable evening. Another memorable Moors land event. Thank you Pete. Julie and all your staff.

We have been using the Winking Man for a few years now and I can honestly say NO COMPLAINTS the staff are friendly yet still efficient the food is good the portions are good the place is spotlessly clean. Another great point is the whole place is disabled friendly and as my wife uses a powerchair this is big thumbs up from us.

We stopped off on the way back from Alton Towers, we were all happy with our meals and a couple of us had desserts which were also nice. We would go again 😊

At the campsite we were staying at we noted a poster from the pub informing that there was a free minibus to and from the pub to the campsite, as England were playing Columbia in the World Cup we decided to book for a meal and to watch the match. Minibus picked us up at 6.30pm and on arrival at the pub a table had been reserved for us with a good view of the tv. Tuesday is pie night so we all ordered the various homemade pies. Food arrived and was delicious a proper pie, ie pastry top and bottom, homemade chips and peas plus a gravy boat with proper meaty thick gravy. The minibus was supposed to take us back at 8.30pm, but as the match was still on, the landlord was more than happy to delay departure until match had finished. Very friendly establishment with great food and service. Would definitely recommend.

As I walked through the broken door I was expecting a nice meal but obviously not. I ordered expecting my dinner to arrive around 20 mins after;1 hour later I was still waiting patiently and then realised it was the lazy, selfish staff who do not welcome the whole community.

Lazy workers, had no intention of providing a good service and had to wait an eternity (about 1 1/2 hours) for my food to arrive. Unfriendly staff. Don’t recommend at all.

Called in for a light lunch. It was a bit confusing where to sit and whether there was a dining area. Scampi was delicious and filling, took a little time to come but worth the wait.

So in we went. Ultra pleasant staff. Very accommodating. Free to park for nite. Wife ordered chicken of some sort which was good mine was a steak which was very tasty if somewhat dry and a little tough. But that's what some steaks are like no matter where you buy from. Will eat hear again. And as its a Thursday got a sweet thrown in. Wt a Thurs meal deal. Which was nice.

Found this gem when staying in the area - You can be picked up on site taken to the pub - fed and watered and then returned to site (fantastic service) no drinking and driving here folks. If only more establishments could see the sense in this kind of service. So to the food - service super, choice super, taste super, atmosphere fantastic. Word of warning - this place gets VERY busy and they do take booking good sized bar with function room available.

Very pleasant staff here. Food was average. Nothing out of this world. Frozen onion rings were as expected. Shame they weren’t fresh. Burgers were big, solid and filling. Pudding was awesome though. Apple pie was delicious.

Going back to the WM after 40 years was very enjoyable. Amber made us very welcome and the mushroom starters were exceptional. Mrs W was delighted with her liver and onions which were served in a seperate bowl compared to many hostels which pour it over the plate.

We were staying at Longnor Wood holiday park and the Winking Man was very much recommended. The owner of the park does offer a free taxi service to and from the pub but we decided to drive. We did get lost so for anyone staying here when you come out of the park turn right towards Leek and go left to the end of the road, at the junction turn left and then immediately left is the pub. The restaurant is quite big and it got busy fairly quickly. I ordered the garlic mushrooms for a starter and the sizzling fajitas for main. Both were really nice but be prepared to wait as it’s cooked fresh, we were one of the first to order food and it took 2 hours for our starters and main to be cooked. My mam had the thai fishcakes and chips and really liked the fishcakes but thechips tasted like they had been cooked in old lard so she was a little disappointed. There is a pool table in there for anyone who likes a game and the bar area is quite nice. Dogs aren’t welcome here so bare that in mind. I would go back and would order thefajitas again.

Went for breakfast, coffee machine broken so ended up with a cup of Tea Ordered 2 breakfasts and nice but helpings are getting smaller every time we go. Cake slices have gone very stingy and not much filling. But the carry on charging the same if not more. Did a bit of store shopping but prices high so shopping limited. Disappointed that this store have no charging facilities for electric cars etc. I cannot believe that we are in the year 2024 where Sainsbury's is advertising renewable energy and doing it's bit contributing towards saving the planet. But WHY has it not got EV Charging point a massive store with no facility to charge your cars.i fing This not only unbelievable but disgusting that a super sized store that been built a few years ago and would have had plenty of time to install chargers. I think I'll be shopping at Morrisons in leek at least they have chargers

We had not been to The Wheel for quite a while so decided to walk up and have tea. This is a lovely, old school traditional pub. The food was really good. The menu is exactly as you'd expect from a decent pub. Nothing fancy, no pages and pages to read through so you can't see the wood for the trees, just a good menu of real food at excellent prices. My husband had the lamb shank in red wine special and I had scampi. Portions were a good size and we both really enjoyed it. As it is such excellent value I am sure we will be back.
