We have dined her on several occasions and always said how exceptional the food is . We hadn’t dined since the kitchen refurbished and went along with two friends who had never been before. We booked burgers and a vegetarian lasagna. The burger meals were tiny in comparison to previous visits and on all four meals the chips were under cooked and hard in places which we commented upon to one another after leaving .The vegetarian lasagna looked lovely but not so much at six in the evening when it reappeared. An unfortunate experience for us because we have genuinely enjoyed this establishment on numerous occasions but this experience has sadly tarnished it for us .

Arranged a family get together for Sunday lunch here 3 adults 1 child, I've had meals in the week and Saturdays before so wanted to try the Sunday roast, wow was not disappointed the selection of vegetables are amazing, all the trimmings even sausage wrapped in bacon on the chicken roast. From making the phone call the hosts very amazing, I even spoke over the phone before hand to change the sitting arrangements which was no problem. This is truly a fabulous friendly family run pub, the candles make a lovely relaxing atmosphere with the log burning blazing, the food was just like your momma made, highly recommend for all occasions, once you visit I'm sure you will make it your local even if you have to travel 18 miles like me...Thank you for a wonderful experience, see you very soon. Bravo the Black Lion. 2 Sunday lunches (one roast lamb, one roast beef), 2 drinks (one large red wine, one pint of bitter) plus 2 coffees - less than £20 each. We were in the area and saw good reviews for this place so decided to go here. The road up to this place is narrow one car wide, but opens up just up the road from here. The car park is very small and hard to find a parking space. It would be best to park up the road where there is places to park on the side of the road. The pub was busy when we arrived and they only had tables upstairs. The stairs to go up were quite steep. All of the tables upstairs were tall tables and stools, there were some children's high chairs there however they were lower than the stools and chairs so not practical with smaller kids. We had to go down to the bar to order food and drinks however other tables had a member of staff take orders from them. The drinks were ok. For food we had the Sunday lunch which was really good. There was a lot of items on the plate and a lot more slices of beef than you get at the majority of other places. Overall the decor is good, the value is very good for what you get with the Sunday lunch. Parking can be an issue. I would recommend this place

After the visit of Churnet valley railway, we wanted to have a lunch. We didnt book for a table on sunday roast and realised no proper table for 3 of us. We've been led to 1st floor with high chair and big projector screen for football. We ordered at the bar and foods came pretty quick and in a generous portion at this cost c.£12 for a portion of beef sunday roast was absolutely rare in this current era. The main point is that those foods were heartily made and so yummy. Plus ales and drinks we were well fed and absolutely glad we picked this pubs among a lot of them in the area.

We all ordered from the lunch menu wheee there were sufficient choices. However, when my food arrived I was rather disappointed. The portion sizes were very small and the food quality was just average. Based on the price charged for the food there are a lot of better options out there. Will I be visiting again? No.

We had a lovely catch up with friends on Saturday including lunch & a couple of bottles of wine - the pub is perfect for this as it’s relaxed & a great atmosphere. A negative review has been posted about a family being put with ‘very drunk people’ meaning us and i think that is really unfair. We might have been a little bit loud as we were celebrating & having fun but we would never have wanted to cause offence to anyone & if they had said anything we would have apologised immediately. We spoke to the family & the little boy. It is certainly not the pubs fault. We all have young children so would not intentionally swear in front of a child but we were adults in a pub having a good time & not in a restaurant. The staff are all really friendly & can’t do enough to make sure you’re looked after, the food is home cooked & all spot on - if only the family had spoke up it could have been nicer for all! We had a really lovely time.

Met an old friend for lunch. Our first visit to this pub. Apart from a bumpy car park surface on arrival, we entered a really characterful traditional British Pub with friendly, happy customers and a very warm greeting from the landlady. Cozy, warm, and comfortable table seating with excellent beers in prime condition and tasty food that was freshly prepared and skilfully served. The prices were very reasonable. The facilities were well-managed, very clean, and fully functional. We can only recommend this Pub that has so many merits ....... go there soon and enjoy them all !! It is a rare UK experience these days.... we will be back again for sure.

Had the Sunday roast and chose beef. Before this, the last time I had a roast dinner here was probably 5 years ago. Compared to previously the latest meal portion size was a LOT smaller. The plate was less crammed with various veggies but still just about adequate. I prefered the meal from 5 years ago. On this visit the beef was tender and a reasonable portion, the yorkie was beautifully cooked, of a large size and delicious and the gravy was flavoursome but I could've done with more of it! The disappointment was with the roast potatoes. The roasties didn't taste great, there were just two small pieces and they looked anemic and were not crispy. The other veggies were okay but I did not like the red cabbage which tasted strange like cinnamon. What is that doing on a roast dinner?? Drinks-wise I was disappointed with the draught lagers available here and the high prices! Where's the Stella or Aspalls draught cider?? As you can see I'm a bit of a food analysist and overall the meal just made the Good rating but was NOT Excellent. I would like to see MORE detailed glowing food reviews on this site before I return to this venue. In the meantime I'll keep going to Ipstones for my meat roast where the veggies are all you can eat and the meal costs about £9.50! Thank you

This is more of a thank-you than a review. Every now and then you stumble across a little gem and this is one of those times This isn't your plastic "gastro" type pub. This is your welcoming, friendly, cosy pub serving proper, hearty, homemade food and great ales. You won't be met with "I'm Gareth and I'll be your server today". You'll be met with a big smile and "hiya love, what can I get you?" You won't get asked for a swipe of your debit card and asked to leave a kidney behind the bar just to make sure you don't do a runner; no just good old fashioned trust. No pretentious plastic food here just fantastic, home cooked food...steak and ale pie with big, juicy chunks of steak in tasty beef gravy and a glazed shortcrust pastry. Proper chips that taste more like roast potatoes and great selection of veg. Cosy fires and leather armchairs aplenty And whilst at some pubs you have to remind them, "I only wanted to buy lunch not the bloody pub!" here the prices are all extremely reasonable indeed. Thank-you so much Black Lion for your friendly service, excellent food, and cosy atmospheric surroundings. You are seriously one of the best pubs we've ever been to. The one complaint we have is, we wish you were located closer to where we live! 😁 Thank-you, keep up the excellent, we will definitely return and will be recommending you!

Went for breakfast, coffee machine broken so ended up with a cup of Tea Ordered 2 breakfasts and nice but helpings are getting smaller every time we go. Cake slices have gone very stingy and not much filling. But the carry on charging the same if not more. Did a bit of store shopping but prices high so shopping limited. Disappointed that this store have no charging facilities for electric cars etc. I cannot believe that we are in the year 2024 where Sainsbury's is advertising renewable energy and doing it's bit contributing towards saving the planet. But WHY has it not got EV Charging point a massive store with no facility to charge your cars.i fing This not only unbelievable but disgusting that a super sized store that been built a few years ago and would have had plenty of time to install chargers. I think I'll be shopping at Morrisons in leek at least they have chargers

We had not been to The Wheel for quite a while so decided to walk up and have tea. This is a lovely, old school traditional pub. The food was really good. The menu is exactly as you'd expect from a decent pub. Nothing fancy, no pages and pages to read through so you can't see the wood for the trees, just a good menu of real food at excellent prices. My husband had the lamb shank in red wine special and I had scampi. Portions were a good size and we both really enjoyed it. As it is such excellent value I am sure we will be back.
