I phoned on the spur of the moment and they were able to take our booking to sit outside by the river for lunch. We had our temperature taken, our hands were sanitised, and wevwere then shown to our table, all the waiting staff were wearing face masks, and the tables were very well socialy distanced. Because of Covid they had a much reduced menu, but we feel that there was something for everyone. I had a delicious terrine hubby had nachos, we followed this with a burger and all the trimmings for hubby, and I had a delicious vegetable risotto with king prawns probably the best risotto I have had, hubby wanted to have the cheese board for dessert but he was to full, he says that next time he will have a main course and then the cheese. Will have no hesitation to return soon thank you for an enjoyable lunch

Very disappointed in the Wineglass menu. It was boring and predictable. Food was mediocre. Caesar salad had far too much dressing which was overpowering and made salad soggy. Croutons had lost their crunch. Cajun chicken breast overcooked and dry. Sharing platter needed relish as it was dry. Constructive criticism for management: the wineglass is situated in a superb setting and clients deserve a memorable meal especially as the food was expensive for what it was. The menu needs to be so much better and the quality control needs attention.

We went with a friend for lunch recently, we were shown to a nice table overlooking the river, which was very full after the recent rain. Nice lunch time menu and we were allowed to use our Gourmet Society Card which was a nice bonus. We all found what to eat, the portions were generous, well presented and hot. The waitress was very attentive, we will book again as we really enjoyed our meal, thank you very much

We took our next door neighbour to say thank you for being there during a recent illness. We were shown to a nice round table by the window overlooking the river. We were given the menu, our drinks order taken and left to decide what we wanted. We chose chicken liver pate for 2 and nachos for one, big portions and very tasty, mains were 2 lemon soles which were meaty and very tasty and one Turkish chicken kebab also a nice portion. As it was pancake day they were offering pancakes with 2 topping for £5 each with a £1 going to charity, we all decided to have one, they were cooked fresh and they were delicious. We really had a nice lunch, we were not rushed, and the food was very good. The menu is not vast but there is something for everyone. We will definitely return. Thank you for a very nice afternoon. Plenty of free parking, and worth booking in advance

This is a well managed restaurant with pleasant and efficient staff. Nicely greeted on arrival by the manager. Splendid roast beef (there is a choice of three meats, fish and veggie). Nice view over the river. £70 for two, three courses for one, 2 courses for the other bottle of Malbec, two coffees.A couple of friendly observations, not intended to negate the above: I would have liked a green vegetable; nowadays chefs love red cabbage, which I presume is because it's less labour-intensive to prepare. And the window tables (with the best view) have radiators adjacent; these were pumping out serious amounts of heat, and we had to shift tables.

Visited for partners birthday celebration on Saturday. Service excellent and we were shown to a delightful table overlooking the river. Competent food delivery on starters and Lamb and Bedfordshire Clanger pie, however the fish and chips was a let down, chips looked definitely of the frozen variety and not what you would expect at this price point

Pleasant surroundings next to the river, and a pleasant dining room. We had Sunday lunch ... it can get a bit "corporate" in teh week ... and the food was good. Buffet starter and pudding course, the usual roast main courses. NB Not carvery. Food very palatable and well presented. We arrived (as booked) at 12:30 and they were obviously not ready. We had to chase them for the aperitif, which came well after the starter, and we had to chase them for the wine etc. I had the impression that there were plenty of willing front line staff but not much supervisory organisation.£83 for two, three courses, one prosecco, two coffees.

This information doesn't seem to get through to the hotel as nothing was mentioned The food was very good and we both enjoyed what we ordered. Service was efficient no complaints there. What lets the place down is the sparse dining room no tablecloths feels more like a cafe Also the drinks are rather pricey a pint of lager and a Bacardi & coke £11.50?

Was given a £50 meal voucher for this restaurant, so thought we should visit before it expired. Chose a Friday lunchtime. Nicely kept garden at the front of the hotel, and beautiful old buildings form the hotel rooms by the looks of it. Arrived promptly at 12:30, and greeted by inexperienced but friendly waitress. We were the only people in the restaurant, so seated by the windows overlooking the River Ouse, which was good. The restaurant is clearly part of a wedding venue, and must be excellent for functions, but without other patrons, it was soulless and flat. Ordered from the lunch menu. A shared sea platter was nicely arranged on a wooden platter for a starter: large prawn each and a few shreds of smoked salmon acceptable, Thai crab cake some distance from Thailand, definitely closer to Iceland (not the country!) as were the goujons, and breaded prawns. A pot of warm samphire a rather odd accompaniment to this frozen food selection, but nice to have something fresh on the plate. Mains of fish and chips and chicken/chorizo on a skewer. Fish the standard version eaten daily at half the price at pubs all over the country, but acceptable with thick freezer chips, a smear of peas and pot of tartar. The kebab spectacular on arrival, but truthfully overcooked and tasteless, with a limp red cabbage slaw also tasteless, thin chips straight from the freezer, and some undressed salad from a bag. Two glasses of average Pinot Grigio and a bottle of sparkling mineral water. £60 before service charge is very poor value for 3 plates of processed food, and will not return..

Having seen a review of the Sunday lunch in a local magazine some time ago, I thought it was about time to try it, so I booked for my Husbands birthday. We arrived and were promptly seated and our drinks order was quickly taken. The Sunday lunch is 3 courses for £24.50pp with buffet starters and desserts and table service for the main course. We were impressed with the starters available, although we did have a short wait for bread as the baskets were empty. Unfortunately, the main course was a complete letdown. We opted for a beef sharing board for 2 and whilst there was sufficient food, and the vegetables were tasty, 2 of the most important parts of a Sunday roast were probably the worst I have been served in a restaurant. The Yorkshire puddings were cold and had an unpleasant flavour, and the roast potatoes were a horrible texture and not crisp or flavoursome. I suspect the potatoes had been cooked previously and then reheated. The beef was fine but very thinly sliced. As for the dessert, this was uninspiring and there was nothing to help redeem the main. We could have had a much better Sunday roast at pretty much any pub. The atmosphere and service was good but I wouldn't return with such a poor food offering.

Over the last ten years or so, I have attended various functions here and found the food to be ok but not particularly outstanding. I believe too that the ownership has changed several times. However visiting there for dinner, I was pleasantly surprised to find my meal very good, this feeling also being expressed by my fellow diners. The service was satisfactory despite my earlier worries about the possible level of service when I arrived and discovered a wedding reception being held at the hotel. So, in conclusion, must acknowledge the fact that certainly food-wise, the restaurant has upped its game.

The menu is extensive with a light bites section should you want that at lunch time. We all in fact went for a proper meal. They were all very good and nice size portions.Mains were a whole rack of ribs with chunky chips cole slaw and corn for me, it was huge and very very good. My husband had chicken wrapped in bacon which he loved, our lady friend had a plate of smoked salmon, and her husband a dressed cromer crab served with salad and chips, which he recommended my husband to have on our next visit. We were all far to full to have a dessert, and after being there chatting for over two and a half hours left. This was our first visit, as we only live five minutes away it won't be our last, thank you for a most enjoyable meal.

The setting could not be better with the restaurant overlooking the river so diners can wave to boats if the mood takes them (I did). The restaurant was laid out in a pleasing way. The food was really good with tweaks to stop dishes being ordinary. The service was magnificent and all the staff were attentive and charming - they are a real asset to The Barns. Not that many people dining but perhaps, like us, its location just outside Bedford (in reality less than a mile) makes people not think of it when planning a meal out. We cycled there today and did not find a bike rack so we chained our bikes to a post - the route back to Bedford through Priory Business Park to Barkers Lane is almost traffic free. The Barns only features on TripAdvisor under hotels and could perhaps also be included under restaurants?

We ate here using a Travelzoo voucher and found the food was really good as was the service. You were not limited to certain choices which is nice and we decided to pay the extra for dessert. The wine selection was good and reasonably priced. Would definitely come back probably during the day and maybe in the summer to take advantage of the riverside setting. The only drawback was the table we were seated at didn't have a table cloth - some tables did and some didn't - it made you feel like that because you were on a discounted rate, you were not allowed a cloth - didn't like that aspect but apart from that, very good and enjoyable.

Six of us went to lunch and used travel zoo vouchers....two courses, two people with prosecco, for £30.00. Staff, as always friendly and helpful. We all had different starters that were enjoyable. However the main courses were over salted. Not just the meats but the vegetables. The extra dishes of roast potatoes were clearly reheated, soggy and without crispness. The main courses were not good. We were having a family get together and did not want to spoil the occasion by complaining, but in any case no one came over and asked if the food was OK. When we paid the bill, we were asked how it was and told the waiter that the meals were ruined by too much salt. We got an apology, but no 'gesture of good will' by way of a discount on the bill.

For a birthday present we went out for a meal at the Wineglass. After a warm and friendly reception, the staff served us a drink while we chose from the menu. Their advice about wines was really enthusiastic and they convinced us to try some new wine - which we loved. The starters were delicious and the main course was unforgettable. It was fantastic value. We can't thank Natasha, Danielle, Richard and Simon enough for their service and kindness. We will certainly be going back for another meal in 2014. :-)

Booked as a special Travelzoo deal, we were not disappointed - instead of the 2 course we had already paid for, the quality of food and service enticed us to order a third course. The ambiance at lunchtime was relaxed and warm. The waiting staff, couldn't have been more helpful and attended to our needs and comfort. The menu was quite extensive and imaginative and not ridiculous in price. Mains about £10 - 15 with steaks additional small cost. We travelled from Milton Keynes and although the journey was very nondescript, the hotel/restaurant was very attractive with plenty of parking. Would certainly recommend this restaurant and hope to return.

My fiancé and I ate a 3 course evening meal and breakfast the following day at the Barns Hotel in the Wineglass Restaurant and we found the experience thoroughly enjoyable! The food was delicious, the staff very polite and friendly, and the atmosphere pleasant, quiet and charming. The only tiny criticism we had was that we were left a long time between being seated and then a drinks order being taken. We will definitely return at some point and we will be sure to recommend the hotel and restaurant to our friends and family.

I contacted the Barns hotel to arrange an afternoon tea as part of a hen weekend. Sam who works in events was a great help and organised the booking for me despite there being a wedding on the same weekend. We were given the best table, right next to the French doors that lead out onto the decking area next to the river. The view was beautiful. The afternoon tea was excellent value; endless sandwiches and cakes with as much tea as we could drink. The waiter and waitress were lovely, nothing was to much trouble. We all had a wonderful time and would definitely visit again.

This was my 2nd visit to the Barns using Travel Zoo vouchers and it was lovely. The restaurant is nicely laid out, great choice of food and lovely waiting staff (Natasha, Jo K. & Richard). It was my birthday and they even bought me a piece of cake with a candle! Definitely a birthday to remember. Can't wait for my next visit in December. The only criticism is the main bar; monster TV and no atmosphere, it really lets the place down.

We booked dinner for early evening for 4th October. We were their first customers and were given a table by the window and enjoyed the view over the river. The service was friendly and helpful from the waiting staff Natasha, Richard and Hendrik. We liked the choices on the menu and there was also a 'specials menu'. The food we ordered did not disappoint. It was reasonably priced, attractive and very tasty. Three enjoyable courses. We would almost certainly revisit the Barns Hotel for a meal again.

This is the second time that I have been to the Barnes Hotel for lunch and on both occasions I had a great lunch. There is plenty of parking and the staff are very welcoming......nothing is too much trouble. A very nice setting and on my last visit we sat outside by the river which was lovely watching the boats pass by and the swans showing off their young ones. There is a bar menu and a restaurant menu, both of which are interesting and value for money. In my opinion the best value for money is the £7.95 Salmon and Chardonnay lunch time special which is available Monday to Friday. The wine was good quality served in nice glasses and there was a choice of smoked salmon with spaghetti and cream sauce which was lovely or salmon, new potatoes, salad and capers which was also very enjoyable. My pet hate is paper napkins and packets of condiments........but neither can be found at the Barnes. Nice linen napkins and fresh condiments made the meal complete. On my second visit the waitress was busy as she was on her own, but she still found time for a chat about the weather and checked that everything was OK. Service is timely and food arrived well presented. Just off the Bedford bypass it is well located, but quiet and pretty. Well worth a visit.

Natasha was great and very helpful, the food was excellent, with a good choice and good value. We'll probably be coming back for a Sunday lunch very soon followed by a walk along the river.

My wife and I visited The Barns Hotel for lunch on Thursday 28th March, 2013. We arrived at the Reception and were greeted in a most friendly manner, then shown to a table next to the windows looking out over the River Great Ouse - shame it was too cold to sit outside! Our orders were taken promptly and the food was served quickly and efficiently by the ever-smiling waitress Natasha. The meal was really well cooked and the quantity ample. I would recommend for a meal out, and, in the Summer it would great to sit by the river bank, pint in hand, watching the boats, swans, ducks and geese. Thanks to the staff for a most pleasant visit.

Took advantage of special offer to celebrate wedding Anniversary in the Barns Hotel Restaurant. Despite the discounted price we paid, we we able to chose from the Full A la Carte menu, and the food was genuinely excellent. Service was generally good, although feel the full 5 star rating can't be given as the staff let themselves down at the end. We ordered coffee at the same time as the sweet. The sweet arrived, as with the other courses in good time, allowing time to digest the earlier course, but no coffee. having finished the pudding, we were asked by staff if we would like coffee, which we confirmed had already been ordered. It was however on the bill, and although was immediately removed, the failure to deliver wasn't really picked up. It may seem petty to 'fail' the restaurant for such a petty thing, but it really did take the shine off what would have been a perfect evening. I must stress though that the food really is of a very high quality.

Took advantage of the excellent Travelzoo offer for dinner in the Wineglass restaurant . The food choices were very good and interesting and the included glass of prosecco could be taken at any time during the meal. The quality of the food was excellent the service started off a little slow given that there were only 2 people other people in the restaurant at the time, but was attentive through the rest of the meal. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the surroundings by the river.

I recently took up a 2 for 1 offer having lunch at the Wineglass restaurant in the Barns Hotel Bedford. This was truly a wonderful experience. The service was friendly and happy and the setting is great, right beside the river Ouse with birds, dragonflies and fisherman on the opposite bank catching some fine fish.I took my wife for lunch and the food was really nice, service was not quick, waiting time for the food was a little long but it was truly worth the wait as food seemed fresh and very tasty.I would thoroughly recommend visiting this Hotel as I am sure like us you will be looking to return very soon.

Our visit was for our wedding anniversary, we had had our reception there some years earlier, so it was a trip down memory lane.As we expected the actual hotel and restaurant had changed little apart from more modern furnishings. It is a lovely site and it was a shame that the meal did not match the quality of the service. My husbands portion of Sea Bass would not have fed an average five year old, and my rissotto although very tasty but it was dry and stodgy. Sticky Toffee pudding was dry and the caramel sauce was very thin and had soaked into the sponge before it arrived at the table. A scoop of ice cream or some cream would have improved it a lot.The waitress was cheerful, friendly and very efficient and on our request showed us to probally the best table for two in the restaurant.I would not reccomend the resdaurant to my friends until the kitchen pulls its socks up. I believe there was a conference being held that night but not an excuse for the poor meal.

From the moment we were shown into the Bar (as we arrived slightly earlier than anticipated) to the moment we left the Restaurant we were shown wonderful hospitality by the staff - very courteous, friendly and helpful in every way and we were seated by the window, overlooking the frozen river which was very picturesque and romantic. The 3 course meal itself was second to none and of an exceptional standard - as was the service. We felt very warm and full when we left. Been before and was very good, unfortunately this time it was not the best. We ordered drinks and then told that the menu was changing next week so lots of the menu was unavailable. We found a table to accommodate us but it wasn't clean. We ordered our food at the bar, the food was OK. We ordered a pudding at the bar. All the food was OK. But I was surprised that I had to pay 10% service charge. Such a shame to have had a disappointing meal at such a lovely little pub!
