It isn’t that often I visit The Windmill, but I know the place well enough to know something is very different. There was a different aura in the air today. I didn’t recognise any of the staff members, and whilst they seemed like a large family, they were all unique and discombobulated in their own ways. I must start with some high praise - we were greeted very kindly by a lovely tall Irish lady with a beaming smile. Whilst very busy, she was also very accompanying and allowed us to buy a few of their home-made pint glasses (which she said she wasn’t supposed to do). Hats off to her for the hospitality. Sadly things took a slight turn for the worse whilst we were seated. It was only myself and my partner ordering some pub grub, however, after a brief conversation with the waiter it was quickly apparent that some kind of knowledge barrier prevented us from ordering exactly what we wanted. I have a suspicion this older gentleman was a distinguished chef from years gone by, because there wasn’t a single word I understood in his recommendations. Embarrassingly, we decided to opt for a few beers at the bar before ordering food instead. I must admit, that was a saving grace, for their homemade beer ‘Hawkstone’ was divine. The bartender was full of dry wit which added to a great atmosphere amongst the other guests. He has that familiar family friendly humour, like you wouldn’t be surprised to see him on TV! Not only was the beer exceptional in quality, the slight intoxication seemed to clear up some of the brain fog I was experiencing earlier, since the waiter suddenly seemed to made a lot more sense! So, we finally ordered our meal and enjoyed some local produce - again, simply divine. Despite the great tastes and atmosphere, I couldn’t help but feel the service was jeopardised by the initial language barrier. As such, I did ask the waiter if we could remove our service charge. I should add, this was a new waiter at the time, a dreary English chap who wasn’t impressed with our request. Whilst his thorough and detailed lecture around why a service charge holds such an important role in the overarching finance of the food industry, I tried to hold my ground and get this removed from the bill. It was only after we realised my partner had been asleep for 8 minutes that we sped things up, paid the bill with a 50/50 compromise on the service charge, and got ourselves out of there. All in all, I’d recommend the establishment because, despite some teething problems and unorthodox scenarios, the people are genuine and the food/drink is exceptional. Just keep an eye out for those tractors (given the rural area) - a young man with curly blonde hair had completely blocked my car in so we had to wait half an hour to leave!

37 of us from 2 years old upwards celebrated my Mum's birthday yesterday and planned the lunch with Barry and Vanessa. It was a fantastic occasion in relaxing surroundings with excellent food. The service was good, everybody received their correct pre-ordered menu choice including those with dietary requirements and the location was splendid with a wonderful view. The younger members of the party took the opportunity of the freedom to play and wander on the grassy area during the occasion. Thank you Barry and Vanessa for making it such a memorable day.

As the restaurant ONLY serves Roast Dinners - we expected they would be nice, but the food was really below average. The Roast overall was not good at all - really disappointing.. Two of our party chose Beef and one chose Lamb - and all of our meals were similarly disappointing and the meat (both Beef and Lamb) was tough and fatty. There was a limited selection of vegetables and the potatoes were very hard and dry. Not recommended unfortunately.

Had a large number of us attend a birthday meal here on a Sunday. Most of us travelled over an hour to get there as the person whose birthday it was lives nearby. The place is really nice in a great setting in the Cotswolds and can only imagine is even nicer in the warmer months. We had a warm greeting and this included a greeting from the lovely pub dog named Flora a huge Great Dane. Unfortunately, this is where the good points ends. As we were a large group we had to pre order our food from the menu off the website which is of course understandable to accommodate our large group. The tables we were given were clean yet had a sticky residue on them. Most of our group had ordered the roast dinner (which I was looking forward to) and I must say a frozen ready meal version from a supermarket would have been better. You receive 3 very hard non crispy roast potatoes, undercooked cauliflower cheese, carrots, shredded cabbage, and lots of courgettes. Yes, courgettes with a roast dinner!! I’ve never been given or seen courgettes with a roast dinner and find it such an odd addition. After nearly finishing our meal we noticed that the pigs in blankets were missing from the roast chicken dinner. We asked about the missing food and were told by the owner that we had been looking at their Christmas menu which we begrudgingly accepted as we pre ordered from their menu on their website. One of or party had pre ordered the 100% plant based burger. Served to him was a jalapeño veg burger instead and luckily wasn’t allergic to peppers. We had to assist in calling out food brought to the table too as the young waitress’ were so quiet when approaching us. When it came to the desserts I was really looking forward to the mango, lime & coconut cheesecake I had pre ordered along with other members of our party. When we were given a paper menu the cheesecake was missing from the menu. This puzzled us as we had pre ordered our food and not once had we been told prior that we had pre ordered food from a Christmas menu. If we had have told we would have ordered something else. We didn’t say anything and me personally I didn’t want to order an alternative as I didn’t want the dessert to be of the same quality as the dinner. We had a birthday cake taken in with us which the staff very kindly brought out as a surprise for us. We then became nervous of eating it as the menu stated there is a £3.50 charge per person to eat birthday cake unless a dessert is ordered. As the whole group hadn’t ordered a dessert we were unsure if there would be a charge to eat the cake so we didn’t bother. We then found out there wouldn’t be a charge but as most of us were ready to leave we decided to cut it up and take slices home with us. A member of our group asked if the cake could be sliced for us but the guy gave a very rude ‘well we normally just give you a knife’ response. So the member of our group then asked for a knife and the guy then looked annoyed that he had to go and get one. When we left the restaurant we looked at the ‘correct’ menu out of curiosity and it still states pigs in blankets come with the roast chicken and also the 100% plant based burger is on the menu. Nowhere on the menu is there a jalapeño burger. Also on the website menu is the mango, lime & coconut cheesecake I was so looking forward to too. There are also price discrepancies too between the online menu and the one provided in the restaurant. It’s a shame they serve such mediocre food as the pub is lovely inside and outside with great views. I certainly won’t be coming back the next time I’m in the area.

Thought would give this place a try for Sunday lunch as I have driven past it many times. The building is great and the views amazing but that’s where the compliments end I’m afraid. The young waitress took our order but after nearly an hour no food and when it did turn up one of the meals was wrong. We complained to the manager who could have solved the issue but chose it pay no interest in our complaint and avoid us. We ate what they served up as we were hungry but the meat was thinly sliced pre prepared meat the roast potatoes were not cooked enough in the middle and soggy not crispy. The plate covered in gravy was obviously a ploy to hide the little meat on the plate. No offer of a free drink or discount it was obvious they just didn’t care. So don’t stop to eat here keep driving.

Booked a table for a 2 pm Sunday lunch. Our order was taken promptly but we waited an hour for the food to arrive. Apparently our order had been lost in the kitchen. The waitress hadn’t kept an eye on the orders she had taken and so hadn’t queried why our meals hadn’t been prepared. The manager showed no interest when told of the delay to our orders and failed to approach the table and offer as much as an apology. When the food did arrive, it was mediocre at best. The pork slices were so thin they disintegrated when probed with the fork. The vegetables were overcooked and minimal. The cauliflower cheese showed no evidence of ever having had contact with cheese at anytime. The grounds of the restaurant are also shabby. Definitely a place to be avoided.

We Have been to this restaurant about 4 times, and always thought food and service was great however on going to this restaurant on 18th Feb 2024 for Sunday lunch we were very disappointed 1 roast pork,1 roast lamb. The roast lamb look like it came out of boil on the bag, The pork was very nice I asked for no gravy on plate and instead be served in a little pot, but meal came up with gravy all over meat.potatoes were disgusting and veg was mostly carrot a spoon of cabbage courgettes and green beans all looked stewed the only nice veg was cauliflower cheese,, The location looking over the countryside is spectacular, but the surrounding area around restaurant needs tiding up, dust on window siles and sticky tables would not return should have gone to a carvery a lot more cheaper

Haven’t been here for years so decided a revisit was in order. We’d booked for 1pm but as we were running very early, after attending the Remembrance service in Witney, we rang to ask if we could come earlier. We had two hungry grandchildren with us who had been in the parade. Lovely man on the phone said “no problem”. So a promising start and we arrived at 12.00pm and were the first diners through the door. Warm welcome and promptly shown to our table. The staff at this point were all pleasant. We brought a pack of cards with us to keep the children (7 & 8) occupied. Our grandson has ADHD so it’s important we can have something to do. There didn’t seem to be anything for children. So bear that in mind if you book. We had two roast lamb dinners, two vegan burgers and chips, four soft drinks, four puddings and a pot of tea for one. Cost £137.78. Now had the food been outstanding or even good we would have been okay with the cost. We knew the price before we arrived and had assumed the food would be so much better than it was. The puddings were nicer than the main courses. Unfortunately, once we’d finished pudding and we’re waiting for the tea, a chap came over to clear the glasses. He certainly wasn’t dressed as though he worked in hospitality! He asked us quite curtly if we were waiting for anything. I replied “yes” He asked “what”and I confirmed a pot of tea. He then walked off. He was offhand. Unsure whether it was us playing cards or what, but we were waiting for the tea, they had empty tables and no one waiting. We were there less than two hours in total. We appreciate costs are rising and we also want to know staff are paid a decent wage. In return, for £137+ we expect a first class lunch and a welcoming atmosphere. Disappointing.

Very poor welcome when we walked in. The man with the bald spot on the back of his head head walked up to us, said hi then turned around and walked back to the bar. At first we were confused and thought he was another customer, then we stood there and he just looked at us - a bit awkward moment of silence...- felt like we were not welcome there -(we are a mixed race family and this was a fine country pub ). Anyway, the next lady who took us to table was cordial. Got drinks. I am not from UK -my partner is - and dont particularly like the roast dinners - very bland everywhere I go, so I was hoping to have a burger - was told they dont do burgers on the weekend LOL. So I ordered the roast dinner - all 3 of us. I honestly dont know what the fuss is about this dish - big giant monster of a dry piece of flavourless dough shaped like a warped bow, sat on top of 2 flavourless cuts of beef - plain roast potatoes and gravy, side cauliflower with cheese, string beans and broccoli -zero flavour. Ate what i could and thought we make a better roast at home!! Why on earth are we paying for this??? Noticed the cheesecake and other deserts were £8.00 a pop!! For a slice of cake and ice cream??LOL No thank you. Bill was £76.76 for 3 roast dinners, 2 large soft drinks and a bottle of Becks 0%. What a complete waste of money. Never again!! I would have been happier having KFC and gone grocery shopping LOL - at least i would have gotten more value. Beautiful building and grounds - thats about it - the food is flavourless.

Brilliant experience from start to finish. We turned up without booking, yes I read negative reviews before making our way over, but thought we’d try it anyway. We had the most delicious food, the couple who run it are lovely people, greeted us when we entered, we had a party of 8, 4 adults and our four children. They got us a table ready, got us our drinks orders and the food was delicious. The view outside is amazing, if you get a window seat, you get to see that breathtaking view. Even inside, it’s so beautiful. Solid oak everywhere, mezzanine floor and high ceilings. The man who runs it, told me about the history of the building witch was fascinating. They had a dog there by the entrance, a 4 year old Great Dane named Flora. She was a gentle giant. Very friendly beautiful dog. We also had a fussy eater with us, our nephew who was adamant he wanted pasta, pasta wasn’t on the menu but the staff did ask the chef if they could do a one off, unfortunately they had no pasta at the time but they tried their hardest to give other options. Honestly a great place, sometimes you have to ignore negative reviews, could have been a bad day or too busy at the time, understaffed etc. You have to give businesses a chance! I’d definitely come back again when I’m next in the area.

One of the worst experiences ever. I won’t talk about the food quality, because if you like the food or not, is subjective. The only thing I can comment is that the food Safety is poor. We found a plastic wrap inside the cooked burger, I assume the wrap that the burger was stored. P.S Starters came 1 hour after the order, and the mains almost 2 hours after the order. FYI, the place was almost empty.

We've been on a quest for the best Sunday roast in the Cotswolds. Booked into The Windmill to add it to our list and discovered that it easily rose to our Number One choice. What an impressive, delightful venue with an outstanding Sunday roast lunch. My husband had lamb; I had turkey, and both were accompanied by all the regular sides (roasties, yorkies, cooked cabbage) and a generous selection of cauliflower cheese, haricot verts, glazed carrots. My husband gave his lamb and mint sauce dish a big thumbs up and I was equally happy with my lean turkey with dressing and gravy. We agree that The Windmill is now our go-to for our traditional Sunday roast as well as being a safe choice for sharing with visitors (a unique statement but many Sunday roasts are far from impressive!). We're looking forward to having a summer Sunday roast on the extensive patio overlooking the gorgeous green rolling hills surrounding the restaurant. All in all, a satisfying experience that we look forward to repeating.

This was our second visit to The Windmill and as expected, we had an excellent dining experience. The setting in the middle of Cotswold Countryside is wonderful and there is a large garden area which makes it suitable for events like Wedding Receptions, etc. The restaurant is very comfortable and has a really welcoming atmosphere. On arrival our greeting was very friendly and professional which set the tone for the whole experience. The menu has a good and varied range and our food was excellently presented and cooked. The drinks menu caters for all tastes. The whole dining experience was first class and we would eat here more often if it weren’t for the 34 miles trip each way, so this is for us a special event venue! The toilets are spotless. Recommended.

We booked an early table for Mother's Day lunch. When we arrived it took several minutes for anyone to take any notice, despite there being several staff at the bar. The table was clean but very sticky and the room was very cold. The food was OK, though the vegetables were only lukewarm. The real problem came when we ordered dessert: I have a nut allergy and asked if the key lime pie was nut-free. I was assured that there were "absolutely no nuts anywhere" on the pie, which was not true. When it arrived the top was covered in almonds. Obviously I sent it back untouched, so I was extra annoyed to see it hadn't been removed from the final bill and I had to ask for it to be taken off. There are several much better experiences to be had nearby for the same price, so we won't be repeating this one.

On arriving, despite several staff being around, it took a few minutes for anyone to speak to us. Overall very disappointed having heard that this was a really good place to eat. Won't be returning.

We visited here for our work Chritmas dinner. There were a few positives - bar staff friendly ( beware of the prices!) and Xmas disco good. Firstly I sat with my coat on for the first 30 minutes as the radiator by our table wasn't on. The food was below average especially as they charge £43 for 3 courses. No tea/coffee and no crackers - I've never been anywhere for Christmas that these aren't offered. Plates of roast swimming in gravy and no one asked if they wanted this. It did say plated meal but think this made it more like a school canteen. We asked for sauces and were given a small ramekin of cranberry for 10 people. Some serving staff quite rude and argued that they had brought our all meals even though clearly one of us hadn't received theirs. They then waited 15 minutes for it to arrive and had to ask 3 times. They were expecting a big party but at this stage there were only 14 of us in the restaurant. I don't usually complain but save your money and go elsewhere. A shame as the venue/decor is lovely

We've been going to the Windmill, under it's various owners for 20 years. Sunday lunches were always excellent. Yesterday, our visit was made unpleasant by parents who did not seem to understand that their screeching children made the otherwise pleasant room a nightmare - somewhere between a MacDonalds on a school holiday and London Zoo. We left after the first course, and therefore cannot judge the dishes. One parent, oblivious of other guests, encouraged his brat to misbehave, obviously under the impression that he was at home (God help the neighbours!). This is no fault of the restaurant, or its staff; although it might be possible to arrange other areas in the restaurant as 'child friendly'. Like a cage outside.

We went to the Cotswolds for the weekend, and met our son at this restaurant for dinner. The food choice, given it's lockdown and places are limiting what they do, was great - something for everyone. Location-wise - just outside of Burford towards Witney and the views are stunning.I would also say that their Covid-19 restrictions were adhered to, with plenty of space between tables, and how they served as well. At the moment, there are discounted meals as well, which should help to attract business

Three phone conversations with the hotel management eventually confirmed that a Sunday roast could be obtained in the Terrace resturant. A table for 7 was booked and confirmed. On arrival the Terrace resturant was set up for a wedding ceremony. No other dining tables were apparent. On querying this with bar staff we were abruptly told "not our problem".Eventually found a deputy manager who set about laying up a dining table amongst the wedding guests ! Meanwhile we tried other local venues but couldn't get in within our timescale. We eventually sat for our anticipated Sunday lunch in a crowded golf club bar surrounded by a multitude of wedding guests. The food was obviously recently pulled out of the freezer, looked and tasted same ! HOPELESS !!We recommend training for front of house management in the art of coordination and courtesy for members of the bar staff.

Good lunch selection. Very nice salads and a good choice of panini. It’s not very clear when you go in what to do if you want to sit inside to eat as all the boards are headed up as takeaway menus. The seating area is really just there to eat the takeaway - so order what you’d like and then take it through to eat. It might be good to make this clearer for customers especially when it’s busy. Overall though the food and coffee were delicious so well worth a lunch stop.

When a business contact of mine from London told me he would be visiting Witney, of course I wanted to meet up with him. But also I wanted to impress him and show him the best that Witney ha to offer. When I booked dinner at The Three Horseshoes I was confident that my contact would have a great evening, and it was absolutely the right choice. As soon as he arrived he commented on how amazing the pub was, and how he loved the atmosphere and the log burner too. Our dinner was fantastic and even though the place was busy, the speed or service and the attentiveness of the team was brilliant. They were there when we needed them, and left us to get on with our business conversation the rest of the time. For impressing a really important contact from London - The Three Horseshoes was exactly the right choice and what is SO brilliant is that it is also the perfect choice for a quiet pint or to meet up with friends too.

Unwelcoming from the staff. Afternoon tea was limited to one very small pot of tea person with only 4 choices of tea. Egg mayo and salmon in tiny rolls and pureed! One delicious coronation chicken finger sandwich but then an unappetising cucumber and mint one. The rolls were tiny. Scones were nice. Cakes also tiny. People who wanted to take cakes home were provided with boxes meant for wraps. Not value for money and not the pleasant experience we had two years ago.
