We popped into The Windmill bakery for breakfast while out on our morning walk this morning...lovely friendly staff & great service & the food was fresh & delicious (highly recommend the rarebit!). They have a great selection of food on the menu & also to take away & do takeaway boxes for breakfast, pasta, etc, which is excellent if you're on the go. They also have lots of local produce/gifts on sale supporting other local businesses. All in all a great experience.... we're lucky to be local..... please pop in if you're in Rottingdean 😊

Employees very rude apart from the young blonde girl who always smiles and is very polite. But the other older women are very rude and obnoxious and do not make you feel welcome, well didn’t make me feel welcome anyway, thats my personal Opinion. Other than that, coffee is alright but then coffee is coffee so 🤷🏼♂️. Bacon sandwiches are alright.

Only used the takeaway, each time no baguettes, no sausage rolls sold out and wasn’t even 11am. Staff very unhelpful. Eventually got a highly acclaimed sausage roll ( so they say) no different than a Greggs sausage roll but 3 times the price. Probably find the freezer is full of Greggs bake at home sausage rolls.

My partner and I chose the crispy chilli chicken and cheese option from the sandwich board and a Brie and cranberry toastie. My partners food arrived as just crispy chicken pieces with a salad, not a sandwich even though this chicken and salad option was no where to be seen on any of the menus so we were baffled why this came out not as a sandwich. My toastie came out as toasted bread with cold Brie and cranberry sauce added, the bread hadn’t been buttered before being toasted so it was very dry and I had to ask for it to be toasted again so the inside was warm and melted, isn’t that what a toastie is?! I used to visit this bakery before and always sung its praises to my family and friends, loving the fresh sandwiches and cakes but it’s gone down hill. I don’t know whether it’s under new management as I haven’t seen the blonde woman I previously thought was the owner for a while. Won’t be visiting again, I’m not a chef but I can cook much tastier food myself.

The Windmill is a wonderful wee bake/eatery that has a set menu filled with breakfast, brunch and linner favourites. Dogs and their owners are more than welcome there and it has a wonderful familial vibe. (Dogs get treats too)! It's the best place in town for your bread and rolls. The staff are great and the grub is good. Don't try to venture there for food after 15:00 though, as they wind up the kitchen for a four pm close.

The attractive design and situation of this bakery delicatessen cafe on the High Street one of Sussex’s most interesting villages: a place where Rudyard Kipling wrote his “Just So” stories, belies the real deal, in my experience anyway. After spending considerable money on lunch, tea and cake, I was unfortunately yelled at without warning in front of everyone in the cafe for charging up my mobile using a socket near the window. Granted,it would have been better if I had asked first, before plugging in, but the lady of the shop took me down in front of everyone for charging up my mobile using “their” electricity, as she said they have a £2,500 per year bill for running the place. I said sorry and that I had not been charging up for very long, but she said she didn’t care and very sharply told me to unplug my phone immediately. She acted as if I was stealing from her shop, which wasnt the case. The scariest part of it is that she treated me as a paying customer like this. If you don’t want people charging their mobiles in your cafe, put a notice up saying so rather than calling them out in front of everyone when they didn’t know. If someone came to my home I would let them charge up. The other cafes in the High Street let customers charge up. Not at the Windmill Bakery though. I had also come in to buy a fruit cake, for Twelfth Night celebrations, costing £20. I still bought it, spending a total of £36, but there wasn’t a word of apology out of her for the way she had treated me. I found her behaviour humiliating of myself and on consideration have decided not to use this cafe bakery again after coming here throughout the last two years. It is near to where I live and is convenient, but although the other staff were nice and friendly. this person or business does not deserve my patronage. Their main trade apart from eat-in customers in the cafe comes from the builders and manual workers who come in for their English breakfasts, and takeaway rolls and pasties for lunch, and frankly the worthy workers of our locality are welcome to them. I’m going elsewhere.

Thank you for such kindness today. I came in with my mum for lunch and both the food and the service were incredible. My mum started to feel unwell prior to our food coming and so lost her appetite which she felt awful about once her food arrived, but the staff were kind enough to take it back free of charge, even though it had been made and was sitting at our table for a few minutes. They were extremely lovely about the situation and we really appreciated this touch of kindness. Highly recommend if you are looking for a cafe that feels like it cares (and for amazing food and tea!)

Dismayed by the queues for Molly's (on the beach) we strolled into Rottingdean in search of lunch. Beyond the independent grocer (lovely fruit and veg displayed outside) we stumbled on the Windmill. What a treat. Excellent quiche (with salad garnish) and tasty vegetarian filled pastry roll (pumpkin, sweet potato and goat's cheese) all washed down with mugs of proper tea. Set us up for the 10k walk back!

Came here last month for breakfast for the first time, was so impressed. I had a full English which was delicious and my husband had a sausage & bacon sandwich and got to choose which type of bread he had it on from their vast selection. Staff were lovely and it was really reasonably priced. Will be visiting again soon.

Perhaps it’s a little misleading to call it a bakery, as bread is not baked on the premises. However, it’s excellent range of delicious baked products are from the Real Patisserie in Brighton. They are quite expensive, but it would be difficult to find better bread anywhere nearby. Although not they’re not alone in Rottingdean, they also sell coffee to take away.

I visited the pub recently and had what started as a normal and relaxed experience. While ordering my drink, the beer barrel ran out just as my pint was nearly full. Out of curiosity — not to save money — I asked the barman if there was ever flexibility in cases like this. I was genuinely interested in how different pubs handle these situations, especially since some independent venues might agree to a fair adjustment. The barman explained they have fixed prices, which I fully accepted, and I paid for my drink in full without hesitation. Unfortunately, things escalated when another customer wrongly accused me of demanding a free drink and behaving entitled — which was completely untrue. I calmly tried to explain myself, but another person joined in, calling me insulting names. What shocked me most was that a staff member — who I was told is in charge of the rota and audits — not only failed to calm the situation but actually seemed to encourage the hostility. In an attempt to defuse the tension, I briefly mentioned that I have autism, hoping to provide some context for my communication style. Suddenly, the same staff member's attitude completely changed — but not in a good way. Instead of treating me with the same respect as any other customer, it felt as though she was now tailoring her behaviour around my condition, as if my autism had anything to do with what had happened. That made the situation feel even more patronising and uncomfortable. To make matters worse, it appeared this staff member had been drinking alcohol — I noticed her taking shots from the bartender during the afternoon. This raised serious concerns about professionalism, especially given her role in managing the rota and audits. I felt so unwelcome that I left without even finishing my drink. Frankly, I’m disgusted by how I was treated — not just by customers, but by a staff member who should know better. This wasn’t just poor customer service; it was a complete failure in handling a situation fairly and respectfully. I understand that pubs can get lively, but there’s no excuse for hostility, false accusations, and singling someone out based on a disability. I hope this was an isolated incident, but I felt it was important to share my experience honestly. Update (⭐): Management’s response sadly confirms the issue... The response from management only confirms the lack of professionalism I experienced. I was calm, paid in full, and expressed curiosity — not entitlement. The attempt to twist my words and bring up false history after I raised a concern is deeply disappointing and reveals more about their conduct than mine. This is why I won't be returning.

The food in the restaurant is good. The chef clearly has talent and the service on the night we dined here was very professional - better than some restaurants in Brighton/Hove. We had a Groupon and the value with this offer was very good. You can't get away from the fact that this restaurant is in a hotel though and I feel the management could improve the experience if they want non residence to eat here. Firstly put table cloths on the table. Have some background music. Dim the lighting and cover over the fire door -just a net or curtain. The atmosphere in the restaurant does not make for a special occasion due to lack of the above. The food in taste and presentation is great. There is parking on site if you're lucky enough to get a space - but you can park opposite on the seafront. We drank in the bar first and if I went again I'd drink elsewhere first - purely because it is so obviously a hotel bar. Maybe background music; comfortable chairs; dimmer lighting - it just needs atmosphere as the staff were faultless
