The Wicked Lady in St Albans

Staff were welcoming at the bar and at the station where the booking was “checked-in” We were seated at a table that was perfectly adequately sized for my wife, I and three children. Service was a little rushed - it felt like the waitress was trying to turn over the table - but all in all it was fine The food was the reason for the weak overall score. Unfortunately, the prices you are charging is absolutely and utterly the wrong price point for the quality of the food. My wife had a chicken burger - from memory it was around £18 - really poor quality food, poorly executed and I’m sorry to say, £5-7 too expensive for what it was I had the steak pie from the main menu - again, recognising you need to maintain 65% margin on food is fine .. but I’d assume the margin on that product was significantly higher .. at £19 approx, you have to deliver a half decent product but the quality of the product was really poor .. the accompanying mash and gravy were equally poor - I assumed the mash was made from packet ingredients The kids meal was adequate .. kids sausage and mash - one sausage - doesn’t provide good value for money. The kids burger was probably the best of the 5 meals we ordered. The final kids meal we ordered was the grilled chicken strips - adequate and as expected - but the side salad was totally bizarre - it was also 1/4 raw, white onion ! For a kids side salad? Just a weird thing to served Desserts x2 - Brownie / ice cream - all good - as described. Service was rushed From memory the pint of Neck Oil I ordered was again more expensive than the quality of environment warranted (by around 10-15%)

Great catch up with relatives. Good food. Lovely staff. We stayed ages and were not rushed at all.

We turned up here without a booking for an early Sunday Lunch. The restaurant was empty, service was prompt and staff were helpful. We had the roast duck and noodle salad and the roast pork belly. both big portions, good quality. would go back. plenty of walking opportunities in the area.

Such a lovely pub. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is inviting and friendly. Had five star service.

Great atmosphere, great food and drinkable non-alcoholic beer for the drivers, and more gins than my wife could drink. Couple this with friendly, helpful and accomodating staff and you've got a destination I can heartily recommend. Many thanks!

We came to the Wicked Lady for a family Sunday lunch and I have to say the experience was mixed. While the food was nice, some of the staff could certainly do with a little training on etiquette. We were made to feel as though having our baby there was an inconvenience and that the pub was not family friendly. First of all we requested a high chair and then had to go find one ourselves (all of which were too big for a 7 month old). Then when we placed the high chair down, rather than politely asking us to move it to another position as the staff needed a clearer pathway, the woman was very abrupt. We had to explain a spare chair would have to be removed to allow for the adjustment. While this was speedily done, it was made to seem as though they were doing us a favour. Shortly afterwards our son started crying due to teething pain. As I was soothing him, a member of staff thought it was appropriate to come and ask me if I had considered using my phone to play white noise to help keep him quiet. Needless to say a strangers advice on caring for my child was not invited nor appreciated. So all in all while the meal was great, I don’t think we will be returning anytime soon due to a few rude members of staff that spoiled the experience for all.

Been here a few times over the years - great service from Lewis and the team today. Couldn’t fault it. Fab food and ambiance. They even lit the fire as it was a tad chilly inside! The one thing that does let the Wicked Lady down is its exterior - pulled up today in utter disbelief that it looked so shabby and tired - senior management / brewery could seriously do with addressing it together with the car park. First impressions do count for a lot. Both need some much needed TLC. Other than this - would highly recommend the Wicked Lady….!

A lovely place for a Sunday roast! We came with family and we had the most Wonderfull server Connie, she was polite and very attentive. The Roast were super tasty, we will be coming back!

We had a table for 10 on a Saturday. The food was great and the staff were friendly and helpful. However the staff were overstretched and working hard, but it was difficult to get attention when we needed anything and sometimes the service was slow. I understand it is difficult to get hospitality staff now, but a couple more on the floor at a busy Saturday lunchtime would make a big difference. Otherwise a good experience.

2 out of our 4 meals weren’t very good. Roast beef was tough and fatty and no greens. The vegetarian option banana blossom was disgusting. It was tasteless and stringy. The waiter assured us it was a fish substitute. This is ridiculous. It’s nothing like fish and very bland. Totally unappetising. I don’t know how they have the nerve to serve it. I wish restaurants didn’t think that vegetarians wanted to eat vegan meals. There were very few vegetarian options.

Carole ruined my afternoon. Ridiculously bad service. Awful.

Lovely quick lunch. We was very well looked after by Molly and Rhiannon. The food was served beautifully. Highly recommend the Cod and chips. Always feel very welcomed.

My sister had an excellent bar meal yesterday. Molly and Ryan were friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was hot, delicious and attractively served.

For start, I booked the table through the website, however the booking didn't come through. Sometimes it happens. The host was quite helpful and l sat us at the bar area (still table service) amongst two other tables. We understood it was busy time, however the drinks, starters and main course came quite quickly. Everything was just fine until the last order. We have been completely forgotten. The tables next to us were constantly served, no one came up and even ask if we need anything. After about hour of being ignored, we finished the drinks and decided to leave. I get you were busy at that day, but we came not at the busiest time. Honestly, I rather to leave reastaurant due to the failure of booking than feel like intruder who disturb people who work there.

I went there today for the first time with my family and we really enjoyed it , specially the girl who served us named Gabriella was amazing she really put an extra effort to make our Mother’s Day special.❤️

We waited for almost an hour for dessert after we finished our main course and it wasn't even at the busiest time.

Brilliant experience for a very large group. Service was fab, food was excellent and they were very accommodating to all needs. Will definitely be back. I went for lunch and wasn't amazed. The location isn't great, being pretty isolated but on a busy main road and the car park is a bit tricky to get into when it's busy. The food was quite nice enough but the staff just seemed a bit dopey; had to ask for things that were missing, including my entire meal, and they didn't seem in any real rush to actually get them.

Group Lunch for 11 friends from a lunch club, so we knew what we'd expect to receive. We got a warm welcome on this weekday lunchtime and Carole Molly & Jesse took the extra trouble to set up a long table for us in a separate area. Considering we'd not pre-ordered food, Marian & Toto produced it quick sharp and it didn't take us long to polish it off! Excellent!

Came for my mums birthday meal, everything was lovely. Food came really quick and was delicious. We were served by Ryan who was very friendly and efficient.

We had the set 3 course meal, the food was excellent. Carole our waitress was friendly and very attentive, our food was served in a timely manner. The manager was also friendly and made us welcome during our lunch. We would definately go again and recommend to friends.

The second time I've been here in the last month. The food is superb, a big change to maybe a year ago. Last night I had Rib Eye Steak which was cooked to perfection. The accompaniments were delicious too. My partner had Lamb Shank and it was fabulous. Our compliments must go to the chefs (Toto and Marion I believe). We were made most welcome when we arrived by Kam and Rhiannon and must extend the compliments to them too. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Well done team.

I have been going to the wicked lady for many years, but I have to comment, that the food there these days is amazing. We had fillet steak all round, and they were all cooked to perfection, and the accompaniments were really tasty too. Our waitress, Carole, was really attentive and friendly, and she also gave us a great wine recommendation. I will be back soon for sure, 5* job all round!!

Food is tasty and well presented. Service is great and staff are friendly. The restaurant looks nice and has a nice ambience. The experience is lovely and enjoyed our time. At times they can get too busy and may not notice costumers calling for service, so a bit more attentiveness would be great. Overall it is a place I would highly recommend and would visit again.

The chipotle chicken was amazing and the steak pie was fabulous. My family and I enjoyed the food lots! Carole was very attentive and knowledgeable regarding the menu choices. I can't fault the food or the serve. I hugely recommend!

The service was very good and the food for the most part was delicious apart from the seafood linguine and the fish and chips which had a huge amount of salt on them. My Diablo pizza was very good and my wife’s burger also very good. Overall very good dinner just a little less salt next time please. Thanks.

Had an excellent Sunday lunch here. I recommend the trio, the duo of beef, and the chicken. Everything was delicious, the yorkshires, the meats, the veggies and the gravy too. The texture of the meats was great, and we also had a side of mac & cheese which was very very nice, though it could have been baked longer for a crispy/crunchy top. Service was good, friendly or arrival and relatively prompt. Great place for Sunday lunch - the ambience or perfect. Thanks for lunch 😊
