Excellent waffles, sweet and savoury and coffee was delish

Wow, the food is incredible! What attentive and friendly staff too - so quick to bring menus and the food and drinks. Also a lovely atmosphere. I definitely want to return soon - I highly recommend for all!

The waffles are to die for here! There’s a choice of different waffles and many choices of sweet or savoury toppings! The restaurant is very busy and buzzy, but we were seated straight away. Service was good. All staff were friendly, orders taken and food arrived in good time. The only issue I had was that we were given the bill without actually asking for it and then had to point out we actually wanted some more drinks. The feeling of being rushed off a table is not a nice one and although the restaurant is obviously very busy, it’s a shame they felt the need to do that. All in all though…..a must visit restaurant if you are a waffle lover!

Waffles were delicious, and staff were very helpful and welcoming. Can become a little pricey when adding drinks and extras.

I met with a friend as a halfway point, she came from High Wycombe and myself from Highgate in north London. We both enjoyed our food (chicken and meatball waffles) and drinks (elderflower cooler and homemade lemonade, then a flat white and a fresh juice). The alarming thing for us (and we don’t truly know the full outcome yet as we only visited on Saturday evening) was that when the bill came it came with a “reminder” that parking fines are automatically issued by a third party for staying more than 2.5hrs. Seeing as we had each driven just under an hour to have a catch up together, we didn’t even think that a proper restaurant we’d made a reservation at would have such a system in place for their patrons. I am aware of similar restrictions in leisure parks where you may be restricted - but those sorts of places tend to be fast food venues, not somewhere that’s a “destination” in itself. I would hazard a guess that a large proportion of visitors arrive by car. What would be useful, is upon arrival for your reservation this is highlighted, rather than sitting for 3hrs+ over food and drinks to discovered this when it’s too late. Fine is £100. We raised it with the person who served us and they did take our registration plates so, hopefully we will not receive a fine but it’s definitely a system that needs to be made super clear. We arrived in darkness too, so yes there are signs in the car park but, as often with these private firms, they don’t made it super easy and I genuinely wouldn’t even be looking for this information when I’ve made a reservation specifically to visit a venue.

Always love it here. One of my favourite local spots and I love to show this spot to my friends and family when I get the opportunities. Very child friendly too which may be a selling point to some people!

Amazing restaurant, been here twice, waiting time can be a bit long on the weekends but trust me it’s worth it. The food is AMAZING, all the waffles are great, worth it for the price, must try in St Albans fs.

My daughter took my wife & I to the new Waffle House in Harpenden for lunch. Lovely ambiance and the food and service were excellent. Phil is a great Manager and both Elise and Julia were very attentive and caring. Shall definitely be going back there again soon. Hopefully one day soon they will put the Chilli Con Carne & Ratatouille waffles back on the menu. It would also be wonderful if they could introduce a tandoori chicken or chicken tikka waffle. Superb faultless food. High-quality produce that is prepared and cooked to an excellent standard. Moderate adaptation requests (really crispy bacon) were accepted AND carried out to perfection, with no fuss, despite them being VERY BUSY. Fast, efficient, and friendly service. My only criticism is that you are too far away from where I live. Although the food is so delicious, I'd probably just make my way through the entire menu, so possibly the best outcome for my waistline.

The Waffle House Harpenden hit all the right spots. All the staff were friendly and accommodating, we were served by KoKo who was great. The new venue is lovely and the waffles were excellent.

Delicious waffles, totally worth it. Milkshake was really nice. More chance of getting a seat if you visit before 11am otherwise you may end up in a queue.

Best breakfast in Hertfordshire

First visit and we were delighted. The coffee was excellent: highly recommend the filter, beautiful fruity blend, doesn’t need milk. The tableware and cups are very elegant. Friendly welcome, including from the chef. Real fire burning which added to the atmosphere. The breakfasts were very good and we ate them before I could even get a picture!! Bacon and scrambled eggs spot on and the sausage good quality and tasty. Lovely to have the water mill up in the middle floor dining area.

Sweet and savoury waffels, open again with new menu and specials. Great for lunch or evenings out. Customer parking is available.

Gorgeous listed building. Pub feeling but a lovely place to grab yummy food. Service is a bit slow, but otherwise thoroughly recommend it

Hidden just outside the city, this place feels like a breath of fresh air. The food is bursting with flavor, each dish more delicious than the last, leaving you wanting more. The staff are warm and friendly. Yes, it’s a bit long journey from the city, but the beautiful setting and the whole experience make it totally worth it. You’ll leave with a happy stomach and a smile.

Highly recommended, especially their shredded salmon poached eggs and the classic breakfast waffle. There’s always a queue during the weekend but it’s worth a wait!

The place is okay. They wouldn't mix stuff from the lunch and breakfast menu late morning - ridiculous. And the wasps buzzing around the honey!

Delicious savoury waffles with meatballs which I definitely recommend. I've seen some sweet waffle options too which looked amazing! Really nice setup to sit outside if the weather is dry.

Very loud but otherwise perfect! Amazing date location or lunch after a long walk around the park. Many dogs always makes a place better. The only thing I'd say is because it's waffles there are obviously a lot of children. We didn't mind but there was a table next to us speaking quite loudly about it.

Service was lacklustered, but that was mainly due to management chatting instead of watching team / tables. The food was good but that's the only positive from our visit. My wife had the Brie & Bacon special, so I'd thought i'll ask for a side of bacon to go with my buttermilk chicken. Waitress came back and said I can't have the side of bacon as the chef has said they need to save it for breakfast. I was lost for words that a business doesn't want to make extra sales, especially when the item was on the menu. I feel that the truth was that the chef couldn't be bothered to cook an extra portion of bacon. Drinks arrived, my neck oil had a weird foam like head on the pint it tasted ok but looked odd. The wife's cocktail had a hair on the strawberry and 2 chips in the glass rim. Beggers belief how the bar man missed this. Our food came, and I asked for some extra sriracha mayo. Waitress came back to say she would have to charge £2.75 for a portion of mayo with a few drops of sriracha sauce in. This was the final straw, I told the waitress not to worry! We asked for the bill, then asked to speak to the manager to discuss the service charge and who gets the tips. We had a supervisor come over, the two managers on duty couldn't be bothered, it seemed. We had the service charge taken off and gave our waitress £5 cash, as she would keep it and not have her serviced charge taken/shared with lazy chefs and managers.

Great tasting food, however the waffles aren't hot or freshly made. We got the Siracha chicken waffles but nothing was hot. It was Luke warm, which is a big shame. As I don't mind waiting for freshly made food. We also got the deconstructed blueberry cheesecake waffles but no taste of cheesecake just blueberry and granola. Service was quick, we were surprised how and why the food came so quickly.

Lovely experience for a birthday breakfast. Sat outside but the sub came out. Good food and service. Throughly recommend.

It was our second time there. Portions got smaller and the price got higher. We ended up not being full. It was ok, I like that we can eat outside but be careful, our glasses were absolutely disgusting and there were things missing within our order. Not sure we would go a third time.

Very enjoyable. Lovely sunny Sunday morning so a great place to sit outside for breakfast and lucky enough to be by the mill stream. Service was friendly and efficient and all the plates sampled by our group were enjoyed. Toilet facilities need an upgrade but overall we'd happily come back

The waffles here are really good. The menu is great. Book your table in advanced this place gets really busy.

Very poorly managed queue 11 am the tables were not ready. Plenty of staff mucking about having chats. Plenty of empty tables and people just waiting while staff chat! Needs proper management. Food and service by servers were marvellous. Just focus on managing the queue and managing the managers.

Veggie options so limited! The mushroom and cheese was so basic and boring honestly. The desert version was great. You have 2.5 hrs on parking so that makes it easier but people don’t know how to park so cars are all over the place!

New updated review (2024) This spot continues to be popular. Upon a recent visit i noticed the menu has improved with more vatriety and the portion sizes are alot more adequate and filling compared to the past in my experience. Out door seating is great although limited availability for parties of 6 +. Staff were slick and helpful and profrssional. Will be back for sure. Old review 3 yeara ago (2021): Great spot with beautiful setting indoors and outdoors. Always worth the half hour drive for me. Free parking available on site. Can get busy at peak times and have to wait in the queue. Historically a popular spot for many. The quality of the Coffee is good. Decent menu for sweet and savory dishes but on the down side, the choices for savory veg / vegan are limited so i find myself ordering the same everytime. All in all, a good outing and will be back.

Wonderful place! Had this recommended for ages and it was definitely worth the trip! All the food was really good and fresh, drinks were great and the overall scenery and atmosphere was lovely. Would definitely recommend further!

Perfect waffles, great coffee. Honestly I was prepared to be underwhelmed but the savoury wholemeal waffle I had was light and totally delicious, with superb poached eggs and chorizo beans. Definitely be back.

Chocolate malt milkshakes and their savoury waffles of course ! So so good Edit (7 years later): portions are smaller, milkshakes are smaller, prices are higher and some of the non-breakfast waffles are lack lustre.

We visited on very busy bank holiday & they were extremely organised so didnt wait long to be seated. The service was excellent ( Thx Luke) and the quality & choice of both ( sweets & savoury) dishes is to be celebrated. I think they use natural products & no artificial sweetners. Check out the Falafel option & the cherry waffles🏆🎉👏

Though there were many tables free, we were left queuing for quite a while. Many waiters were stood around, when tables needed cleaning. Once we were sat, the service was ok and the waiter was polite. Considering the price of a small waffle, I would expect the ice cream to be included not an extra £3. This place is a little over rated. The setting is lovely and there is plenty of parking.

Fantastic food, pretty location and welcoming staff. A must when in St Albans! Whether savoury or sweet, the menu is varied with high quality produce and nice seasonal specials. Yummy drinks too. Recently extended opening to evenings which I’m yet to try but will be back!

Amazing food, our waiter recommended the chicken waffle and I’m glad she did! As someone who isn’t normally a fan of coleslaw, I finished the whole meal, delicious. The staff were so great and even made sure we got a seat by the water.

Says they cater for vegans, I even emailed ahead of schedule and noted the four available options. On arrival the waffles resembled something closer to over baked bread. Bland, dry, hard texture. I returned it after two bites.

The savoury waffle lunch menu is uninspired, not sure why they don't do some of their breakfast options after 12pm. The sweet waffle menu is better

Spent a lovely time with son and husband celebrating my sons GCSE great results. Food was wonderful as always, we are loyal customers. The service was impeccable, thank you! This is a place where we keep coming over and over for our family special times.There's ample parking which makes it more appealing. Highly recommended!

If you absolutely love: Overpriced £4.75 milkshakes (which is literally one scoop of melted ice cream) served in what can only be described as a child’s size 150ml glass Mediocre tasting waffles at extortionate prices and being charged £3 extra just to add ice cream or cream Being served by waiters who will say about 5 words to you while you dine and then charge you a %10 service charge on the bill Taking pictures of food just to post on social media to say you’ve been somewhere (I mean, just take a look at the other reviews) Then this is the perfect place for you!

I came here with my friend for brunch on Tuesday. We arrived around 11.45am and didn’t have to wait long for a table. We were provided with lovely, clean highchairs for my children too. The waiter was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I had the Eton Mess waffle which was delicious, and my friend had the strawberry waffle which she enjoyed too. Generally I found it really reasonably priced, except the kids orange juice that cost over £3 which I thought was a little steep! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Busy place with amazing waffles! Really enjoyed having waffles here and the water mill setting is fantastic. Don't forget to go inside and see the water mill mechanism!

Beautiful place but a little pricy for the quality of food

I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at The Waffle House. After a long and leisurely walk throughout Verulamium Park, two sweet waffles on the patio seemed like a perfect way to further sweeten the day. The two waffles I tried were Pecan Nut & Butterscotch (the favourite!) and Hot Dutch Apple (also delicious). I ordered both on gluten free (and vegan) waffles. Both were flavourful, and overly saccharine in a wonderful way. If you have a sweet tooth, they’ll hit the spot. I can’t comment on the savoury waffles, but I am interested to try one the next time I go. The wheat free base was fluffy, and left me satisfied. I do think on its own, however, it was a tad bit flavourless. I shared both waffles with a gluten eating diner, and he said he wasn’t able to tell they were gluten free based on texture/ taste. The service was very friendly, and attentive. We had a dog with us, and they made sure to give him attention, and offered water. This is a wonderful place to visit, and I recommend checking it out!

Stunning place on a beautiful mill at the bottom of Verulamium Park. The food is delicious, I ordered the pulled pork waffle and my partner ordered the buttermilk chicken, but we ended up swapping half way... both were just so good. We both had milkshakes, which tasted gorgeous, but could have been presented a bit nicer for £6.50 which was a standard size glass.

Amazing waffles and locely location

Sometimes simple is best. Basic waffles but delicious in an absolutely stunning location. It is a regular breakfast / brunch stop for locals for a reason.

Been to this place for years. Always a good experience. The food is high quality and today I had a special of Goats Cheese Mousse and Beetroot. Yes the yellow is beetroot too. It was magnificent. I always had the Death by Chocolate which was exactly that! Lovely surroundings next to water with random ducks and heron.

Sadly good (scrambled eggs and mushroom waffle) was crunchy could have been stone in mushrooms or shell of egg and super surprised at how blunt the staff were for the first time in the 25 years I have been going. Yes I know it's peek season and they want to move people on quickly to free up tables but the staff stood around watching and talking about the tables and as people finished their food the plates and glasses were instantly cleared. Absolutely disgusting behaviour leaving birthday breakfast celebrations like a conveyor belt of custom and no depth of care for the customer from the staff. I love the Waffle House but really disappointed this time around I'm sorry to say.

The place looks good. Service was ok, nothing special. Food was disappointing unfortunately. We ordered 2 dishes from the savory menu, we didn't like both but we were so hungry so just ate it. The starter of olives and waffle was weird, it didn't work together at all. There was nothing on the plate that connected between the two. I got to say that everything looked good, and the dishes came good on camera (which is what made us visit here in the first place) but it didn't live up to our expectations. To finish, we ordered from the sweet menu. There was nothing special- regular waffle, chocolate, banana and whipped cream. Tasted very average.

I took my granddaughter. We ordered waffles and drinks. Food was pretty good. The Waffle House itself is beautiful. The thing that spoilt it was the constant staff asking if we wanted anything else. No sooner had we eaten we were asked several times. In the end l felt uncomfortable and left. I realise they are busy but you can't expect for people to eat and leave straight away.

Not overly busy given how rammed verelanium park was. Reasonably nice food, though the cream and chocolaye on the waffles was just air with little substance. The drinks were very nice but small. It is expensive for the quantity received. Won't return.

Portions used to be bigger. Fact. Dutch Apple no longer what it used to be..by all means raise the prices. Just don't reduce the food portion as well as then double whammy

Me and a couple of my friends went for lunch today and had lovely food and service however as we were leaving and HAD paid, a young waitress said to the man serving us “they definitely paid yeah?” I think this was extremely rude and unprofessional to say especially in-front of us as customers, completely not acceptable to say. The service from the waiter however was brilliant and the food was great, just a shame to be spoken about like that at the end.

The menu has been updated since I last visited to include more interesting selections for savoury dishes. Today's menu included satay chicken with a crunchy salad which was delicious

I was eager to dine at the Waffle House in St. Albans, attracted by its stunning setting and bustling atmosphere. Sadly, the experience fell far short of expectations. My wife and I ordered the vegetarian curry dish and waffle bhajis with popadoms. The curry arrived barely warm, the bhajis were burnt to a crisp, and the popadoms had an unpleasant taste, reminiscent of soap or something worse, rendering them inedible. It was a disappointing meal all around. Dispute this the staff we excellent in this busy setting.

And in the morning, I’m making waffles! 5* great waffles, would waffle here again.

£16 for 2 small milkshakes 😂 £16 for a waffle with some cheese and chilli . I walked past the kitchen and it looked filthy with batter all over the sides where the grills are located. Pathetic really but people seem to love this place I don’t get the hype at all.

Great sweet and savoury dishes, sweet dish definitely recommend the banoffee, a Staff are very friendly, and there is a large parking area. Also dogs friendly place outside 😊

Lacklustre vegan options. Sat down to look at the menu, all they had were some vegan vanilla ice-cream and their 'vegan waffle' which is cooked on the same waffle iron as the carnist waffles completely defeating the purpose. Ended up leaving without eating as there was no real vegan options.

Went there many times and never disappoint. Keep going back again in the future. Also, recommended it to my family/friends.

The asian glazed pork is honestly from another world. I’m also gluten free and the gf waffle has an amazing texture and taste!

Food was excellent and overall enjoyable.👍 There's always a queue at weekends of between 15 and 20 minutes. It would be nice if they can work out a way to minimise the queue, such as a booking or ticketing system. They have their own car park which is usually full so I park 2 minutes walk away up the hill. While the service is good and staff are very friendly😊, the waffles are a bit overpriced when you considered it's just batter and some sauce. Be aware that they automatically add a service charge to the bill. (Maybe because they experienced poor tipping from customers? 🤷‍♂️) Ending on a positive, it's set in a nice quaint location and it makes my kids happy once they're seated and their food arrives.

The buttermilk chicken waffles were absolutely delicious. The slow cooked pork ones were nice too, but the chicken was one of the best fried chicken I had. For dessert, we had a death by chocolate waffle. I loved them all, but the chicken one was my favourite. The house lemonade was more like a fizzy drink, didn't taste as much homemade as I was hoping.

Do not go here if you have a dietary requirements. They don’t fully accommodate so it’s not worth the wait of 45 mins. They do not cater for gluten and dairy free for drinks or many waffle choices! Everything is a no.

Impressive setting of an old watermill, hosting a waffle-only menu. Tasty and pleasing menu of sweet and savoury, with the deconstructed cheesecake and buttermilk chicken & waffle being highlight (the siracha mayo is great!)

I had heard good reviews about Waffle House and I knew that the next time I was in St Albans I had to visit! I had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and waffles. It was oh-so delicious! I kept daydreaming about it days after 😆 Also, be prepared to wait in line for some time; the place gets packed. It was well worth the wait!
