We used to visit this place a lot under the previous owners as it was a fab place to bring our little one. Sadly we were sorely disappointed on our first trip under new ownership. The back “play” room was cold with no lights or background music and the few toys there were not in a good state at all. When we went to order food they said all they had on was hot drinks and cake. As we’d arrived with a hungry little boy looking for lunch we left without getting anything and, very sadly, had to resort to a local chain rather than supporting a small independent business 😕

Everyone that came was impressed with how wonderful everything looked. They even opened the coffee shop area for us to have hot drinks. I couldn't fault Anything and would Highly recommend here. The baking at the cafe is outstanding. I often pop in for cakes and cookies to take away, and have also had an amazing sandwich and a dreamy vegan sausage roll there. The owners are really lovely and theres always a warm welcome. I feel lucky to live so close by!

We recently hired The Wholesome Hippo for our daughter's birthday. And we all had a fantastic experience. We were well catered for with teas, coffees, lunch for the kids and of course a fantastic homemade birthday cake! The place was beautifully decorated when we arrived and they provided lots of toys/crafts/activities for party go-ers. And the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking to host a children's party!

Wholesome Hippo serves by far the best coffee in Newton Abbot. Italian barista experience comes with the new owners. They made a glorious double expresso - rich, thick, and delicious, as good as the coffee in Florence, which is superb. The staff are friendly and cheerful, the premises clean, the service prompt. With the coffee I scoffed down an absolutely massive vegan sausage roll. Former carnivore, this is the best sausage roll I’ve tasted, it had crispy and brittle pastry, with a nice little burst of cranberry sauce on the veggie sausage.

My partner and I popped in for lunch. We used to come here a lot when it was run by the previous owners. We’ve been living away for 4 years and we’re looking forward to eating here again. The food took an age to arrive, at least half an hour. We had ordered a drink each and finished it and were beginning to get restless waiting. My partner had ordered campfire stew, served with sourdough bread. The stew was okay, but the bread was plain white toast, definitely not sourdough. I ordered a “creamy chicken and leek pie, with crushed minted peas and skin on fries”. I was SO disappointed. The pie was the size of a Christmas mince pie. It was dry, contained only three tiny morsels of chicken and a piece of leek the size of my little fingernail. There was no sauce in it at all, so I guess if there was any it had been soaked up by the dry pastry. The fries were over cooked and dry. The peas, however, were an absolute delight, beautifully cooked and minty. I am known for my ability to eat anything as I am not fussy at all, and never ever complain, but this meal was so dry I left nearly all of it, bar the peas. We won’t be visiting again, sorry.

What a lovely little cafe. Homemade cakes, really nice menu with sandwiches and sharing platters. Great quality coffee. Will definitely be back.

Very poor options for allergies, in fact they had nothing they could offer my son. Back room with the toys was very cold. Used to love this place but I'm not sure I'll go their again. Smoothie bowls used to be delicious with generous toppings but today it was just a lot of smoothie, hardly any topping.

I’ve always wanted to try this little café out but was disappointed. Will not be going there again. My friend asked for a brown roll, which they said they had, but they served a white bread roll instead. They forgot to serve the drinks which were ordered and paid for. They either overcharged for the drinks, or made an error. We want to support local small businesses but this was a very sad disappointment.

We went to the wholesome hippo in Newton Abbot expecting a lunch time menu and ice cream sundaes. Having seen very good reviews our expectations were high. Unfortunately there was no lunchtime menu as such just breakfast and snacking food. Having looked on the menu up on the wall I decided to have an ice cream sundae (ice cream parlour?) but was told that these were unavailable as there was no suitable ice cream for these. Only basic ice cream! Why were they on the wall menu? Having decided to support a local business we ended up going elsewhere. Very disappointed.

Lovely place run by helpful and welcoming staff who understand and love children. Back rooms are for children with boxes of toys and things. Good children's menu and tasty one for adults too. Front room is more of a cafe. All in a very bright well designed and happy environment. Close to car park from back door.

This cafe is quite new, but is our new firm favourite in Newton Abbot. Much better than other cafes in town - better food, better decor, better atmosphere and better for kids. There are three rooms. A bright sunny room at the front, a sunlit room at the back with a baby corner and a 'snug' room (still with daylight) with loads of high quality toys and books from baby to 9yrs old. There are also tables outside the front. The staff were friendly and helpful the food came quickly and was delicious and the portions were good sized - not ridiculously massive like some places. Love it!

First we met up with family in their child friendly back room which was well fitted out for small children, where we had some great coffee. After eventual farewells we went back to their main 'shop frontage' for some tasry bowls of their korean chicken and salady veggie stuff, which was delicious. This is an independent cafe, it has lots of character. The interior fit out is bright and funky, the welcome from the staff was warm and very friendly. (Hey, why cant other places be so friendly?) Service was good, quick and very professional. (Quick suggestion: how about a name board over the back door for easy access from the car park?)

Friendly staff at this new Cafe/restaurant. It was quiet on my visit so service was quick and accurate and very friendly. We sat in the front of the cafe but there is also seating around the back (not seen).

The perfect spot for breakfast, coffee, lunch or dinner when in Shaldon. Service is superb, food offering has good choice, well cooked, reasonably priced. Absolutely love stopping for a coffee and cake on the terrace area overlooking the river. Can’t wait to go back,

We were welcomed by the head bar man, what a gentleman & a legend taking the time to talk to us. We had visited Buckfast Abbey & drove through this quaint little village, parked cheaply in the pay & display & popped into this small village pub. Great little traditional pub, pool table on the right hand side, very clean & throughout. Good selection of beer & ales. We sat in their well tendered gardens. Definitely recommend for a stop off.

There should be a government warning about this pub. You should be warned about how lovely it is. So nice to walk into a pub that's still a pub. It's how a pub should be. We went with friends for the first time last week and we will certainly visit again. Great atmosphere with friendly locals, lovely staff and then the food ‼️ OMG this is what pub food should be like. Fresh, cooked on site and a desperate Dan size portion. I could not recommend this pub any more. It's a proper pub with proper grub. Go you will love it.

Forest Fungi is a great breakfast / brunch spot. The breakfast menu is served until 2 and offers some unusual and delicious options, mushrooms are front and centre as you would expect. They have also introduced a BBQ menu and offer tea and cake in the afternoon. There is a small farm shop on site and a good range of fresh baked goods. The service is friendly and approachable and prices reasonable. The best thing about Forest Fungi is the food, high quality, fresh, tasty and beautifully presented every time. At the weekend it is sensible to book in advance.
