In there earlier but even then a good vibe. Staff terrific and welcoming to a stranger. Did not eat do cannot comment on the food.

Went to a local culture market held in the church opposite and decided to call in when finished. Was met by briar at the bar who was very welcoming and helpful. Ordered a IPA which was the offer of the month and was pleasenly suprised. local drinkers made me feel comfortable and close to the town centre and transport links. Will be back when in town soon

Montlhy artisan was at a venue opposite the pub so decided to call in once i visited the stalls. Great atmopshere from the local drinkers and service by the staff. Had their monthly IPA which was great and location in the town centre for transport links i cant knock the place.

What a awful place I was in 31st may went on the on the bandit and a lad came up and virtually assaulted i tried to collect the money i had in and he grabbed it and ran off I complained to the guy behind the bar but he did nothing Im a pensioner Avoid

We've organised Great North Air Ambulance fundraising pub quizzes at the Cat for around 6 months now. They're a brilliant team, very accommodating and generous towards us, and the prices for food/drink are a great deal.

Food was late , peas frozen , potato’s rock hard from being reheated ,Gravy was like water and stone cold , refused a refund, (WORSE SUNDAY DINNER)

Popped in with my wife for a drink before getting the bus I stood at the bar money in hand a lass was serving and kept looking at me then disappeared up the other end of the bar, a load of young lasses came in after us and stood at the end of the bar, the lad serving bypassed me and took their orders, he knew them, eventually I shouted at him and got served, by the time I got drinks and sat down was about 20 minutes so we only had time to drink half of my pint and half a glass of gin and tonic then we had to go, that's why I only gave two stars

Great day entertainment some nights

Great pub, the staff are relaxed and friendly and they were prepared and willing to make me my lunch, although I arrived at only 11:30am. there is a variety of choice for food and drink, and it is reasonably priced for what you get. I have to say that I was impressed and I will definitely be returning in the future.

The staff were lovely welcoming and friendly. They were relaxed considering we had 4 children with us. The atmosphere was nice not to loud but not quiet the food was really nice I don’t usually like a roast dinner out but I really enjoyed it as did my partner. Ladies toilets were lovely and clean although my partner said the men’s was nice at all. Overall I enjoyed mt experience and will return.

Called in for a drink after work and I have never felt so anxious! A woman who was clearly drunk and cleaning was having a go at a new member of staff and causing a scene and continued to do so throughout my drink. She is clearly known in here and comes in regularly. Then loads of kids running round shouting and screaming.... Do not recommend if you fancy a quiet drink! Probably won't come in again. Ideal if you want an episode of Jeremy Kyle. Shame!

absolutely disgusting, waited a hour and a half for poor quality food. everything was cold, meat tasted horrible, big lumps in the mash, everything was disgusting. if I pay £22 for two Sunday dinners and for the delivery, I expect for the order to be brought to my door! And the food at least be warm and nice! disgusting never ordering or going for food there again.

The food is always good and good value in my opinion, and the staff are always pleasant, but on our past 2 visits we've waited between 45 minutes to over an hour from ordering to be served. One member of our party ended up having to take his meal to work with him in a carry out box the wait was so long. We were not told that there would be a wait due to the high number of deliveries being prepared, it was only when we asked we were told. Come on guys, you can do better.

Amazing carvery with a good portion of meat, real crispy roasties and a good selection of vegetables all for £9. No cooking or washing up to do it's a no brainer.

First time I was there in well over a decade and thoroughly enjoyed my visit (27/05/23) the food was fantastic and a great choice of beers the barmaid (Rosie) was all smiles and very pleasant and helpful all day Very nice establishment and met some lovely people too

Today was the Cat Catering Company for a roast lamb dinner but before anything else the excessive mint sauce was my addition not a vegetable included. So, this was really nice and tasty and if you like your two veg as well as your meat this is the place for you. There were mulit-vegetables in abundance and none were boring or filling an eat-good position on the plate. The likes of mashed swede and carrot which was sought-after tasty not boring, two or three whole white cabbage leaves which had flavour, broccoli likewise which can be boring and tedious, cauliflower cheese, roasters, mash, some French type beans and the rest is history in my digestive system. A really nice Yorkshire and lamb which was generously bestowed - all in all a really decent roast to get your chops into with plenty of interesting variation and not a stray whisker in sight. Whatever these Cats do they do it in tasty style. Claws up, Cats!

Ok place bar staff leave a bit to be desired

In the words of a friend I came to the pub with recently: "The worst dive bar in the North East would look like the Hilton alongside this place." Only one beer on tap/on draught, which when said friend drank tasted "like sour milk." Glass of coke was flat, which turns out to have been as it came from a half-empty bottle on the back of the bar. All of us left, with said drinks being left half-drank as none of us could stomach any more. Selection of food on the menu was at best lacklustre. To finish with one final quote from said friend: "Worst pub I have ever set foot in."

Awful pub. Bought 2 espresso martinis for £11 as advertised on the menus - undrinkable. Barman came to the table to see how things were, explained the drinks were terrible and asked if we could swap to another as we couldn’t manage more than a mouthful. Barman was extremely rude, kept saying it was the first time he’d made it, had written the instructions etc from online and point blank refused to replace drinks as it wasn’t his fault??? That plus the amount of underage drinkers around the pool table end made for a very bad experience. Unfortunately we won’t be back.

Was expecting better. Pub has seen better days. From being voted one of the best pubs in Cumbria, it's now just run down. Just one real ale on, Jennings Cumberland and it wasn't good. The gentleman behind the bar was friendly enough.We didn't eat or see anyone eating, so can't comment . Very disappointed.

Was a reasonable place, went in a quiet time and enjoyed it.

Ordered a gin n lemonade, barely had any lemonade in, no more than 40ml. I asked for some more and said I had to pay for extra and was flat. I asked for a refund because of this or another drink and they refused.

Ordered a couple of Sunday dinners to be delivered as I wasn't well enough to cook, the order came pretty much at the time requested and as we expected needed a quick zap in the microwave but I have to say out of the ones we've had over the lockdown this was by a country mile the tastiest, I don't often clear my plate but the dog went hungry on Sunday, highly recommend

Went to this afternoon for lunch with my daughter and grandson and can't put into words how friendly the staff were and couldn't do enough to welcome us. Food was delicious and highly recommended. Don't usually give bad reviews, but went here last night. Shocking!! Glass all over floor, my g and t was in a plastic cup, no ice, didn't dare ask for a slice. Management issue?? Only 2 staff on that I saw. Didn't have time to clean up and wash glasses as well as serve.

Great food .the chicken wing's was best I've hand in long time.and the pie had half of cow init.will going back for more. Thanxs the staff for the good meal.keep it up

Just finished the cliff walk from St.Bees in the rain with our dog, looking for a dog friendly place to dry off and eat. No where would let us in, someone recommended this pub. Arrived, friendly service, post Xmas we ordered salads, they were fresh with loads of home cooked ham, coleslaw and a fresh greens, also with bread and butter and chips, great portions. The cook also kindly gave us 2 free portions of biscoffee cake that she had made, the food was wholesome and of quality and the service was comfortable. It ticked all our boxes post walk.

Been for dinner today got whole tale scampi it came tried it bloody awful she asked if everything was ok I said it wasn't proper scampi it tasted like scampi bites she admitted it was scampi bites to me that is false advertising won't be going back didn't even offer any refund so been for dinner and still bloody starving

I feel begrudged to give this dive a 1* review!! Turned up with my mates for a few beers in Whitehaven and after a few rounds in some nice and well run establishments, we arrived at this dive!! On entering it stank of old folks home and the staff were as entertaining and pleasant as syphilis 🤷🏻‍♂️ We ordered a round of drinks only to find that one of the choice beverages hadn’t been sold by the staff in a long time and there was a reason why. It was out of date by a year!! The bar staff, rather than offer this beverage for free or suggest another option, proceeded to charge me for the dearest bottled lager on the menu….. A Peroni 🤣🤣 Needless to say, when I reacted and offered my suggestions for what should happen to a paying customer, the ignorant bar-tool couldn’t come up with any suggestion and informed me it was what the till suggested as a reasonable alternative 🤷🏻‍♂️ After my questioning their choice of beverages, the staff were very reluctant to me and my friends and as such, we left the dive!! Got two roasts n a couple of kids meal and oh my god it was LUSH! Absolutely gorgeous food, ordered through the coastal eats app for delivery n can't believe how absolutely scrumptious it was I'm absolutely stuffed and I can't wait till I can eat the left overs it was that good!

Walking in it’s a basic pub, older locals were drinking a pint watching the racing on the day we went in. But the guy behind the bar was nice, the place is clean although a little dated. We ordered, had to wait a little while for the food but when it arrived the portions were enormous. It’s nothing fancy but you won’t go away hungry or thirsty as a beer was amazing value for a thirsty Londoner.

Pleasantly surprised!! Lovely little gem. Chose The Whittington Cat whilst stopping through Whitehaven as it allowed dogs. Decided on a spot of lunch - we were blown away by the home cooked food - sticky chicken wings, chips and salad were truly delicious. Staff team were super friendly and even gave our dog some chicken for lunch 😋

Worst roast dinner weve ever attempted to eat. All meat was dry as a bone, pork was a strange dark grey colour. Roast potatoes were cremated to the point they were black and inedible, some had a weird leathery texture. Mash was bland and only 1 of the dinners came with broccoli.

Visited the Whittington cat , took advantage of the food and drink upgrade , £17 each , the starter was as big as a main course at any wetherspoons we visited, we got prawn cocktail and spicy chicken wings. Both recommended, lasagne and fish and chips to follow , again recommended, loved the home made chips , deserts were sticky toffee pudding with custard and hot fudge cake with ice cream , , yummy highly recommended , relaxed atmosphere, amicable hostess , enjoyed much

Don't be fooled or put off by the appearance of the pub, it is a gem for food. Bit alarming to walk in and the Police on site! Get over that and get a table, served by a lovely waitress. Good selection of beers on tap. We both ordered a salad, but never expected it to be such a size! Huge isn't even close, and everything fresh and juicy, top drawer and fantastic value for the price. Many thanks to all staff there.

This is a family friendly pub that good priced drinks beautiful food portions are massive the staff are friendly and very helpful the chef is superb and asks how you like your food cooked if your ever in Whitehaven ignore the other places come here you won't be disappointed

Friendly staff and good prices. We got offered a table in the beer garden. However, the beer garden is not really a beer garden. Also, the g&t is served just on ice and when asked to get tequila shots we were warned no limes or salt were available.

Went to witinton cat last month wiv all my extended family for a grate oufentic pub meal had some yummy mash and ginnis and the lovely staff taught my mentally ill niece how to walk Althogh raver tragicaly I spilt Pepsi max down my new Umbro hoodie and got it all sticky 😓 Grandma dolt had a great fun time too when She found out the person next to us was a fellow Tory with diabetys so she left my nasty granda and married him instead in the bus stop outside Will be coming back here agin soon need to ask if they serve that delish MBaG I’ve heard so much about from a rival pub😂😂😋😋😋👌👌

Came here for evening drinks on saturday, no track or trace taken and seemed to have way more in the venue than other local places so not much distancing from other groups of people. Disappointed that with the current confirmed COVID cases around the whitehaven area that those who visited on Saturday night will have no idea if they need to get tested. Avoid this place for the time being until some regulations in place

My wife and I visit ;The Cat' for lunch when we are in town shopping. A wide range of meals to suit all pockets, quality food.

Went to the Cat on Boxing Day. There were 10 of us celebrating a friends birthday. It was very busy but our order was taken swiftly and the food arrived promptly. The meal was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful.

This is the best Sunday lunch in Whitehaven. Either eating in or take away the quality of meat, veg and buttery mash is hard to beat. Lovely roast potatoes and home made Yorkshire pudding with tasty gravy. Great value for money.

We stayed in the lakes for a long weekend and someone had recommended Whitehaven to us. To be fair we wasn’t impressed in the area and struggled to find a dog friendly restaurant. We happened to walk past the pub and just asked of the of chance. This is when things started to look up for us.The pub is dog friendly and the two young men working on the Sunday was a credit to the place! They we’re both polite very very helpful and did an amazing job.Food was absolutely lovely and we would definitely return here.The only reason it didn’t get 5 out of 5 is there was no disabled toilet and the toilets we’re a little pongy!!!!But staff and food 5 out of 5 well done

My wife and I always pop in,when we are in Whitehaven,we called in today,just for drinks,but looked at the menu,and We were impressed,looked great value,as were the drinks,next time we will definitely have our lunch,as always the staff were very friendly,as were the locals,great local pub.

Been meaning to try this pub for a bar lunch several times, so glad we had time last Saturday, A busy pub but found a seat at the back, good choice of menu, ordered Cumberland Sausage and Scampi both served with home made chips - tasty chips, overall good food, Staff friendly and helpful. surroundings typical pub decor, we'll go back

Had time to kill, I was in whitehaven, fancied trying a pub that wasn't too local. Came across this place. Nice decor outside, refurbished inside. Good range at the bar, lots of sport and tvs, place to smoke at the back, pool table and friendly staff at the bar. Still a local but a hospitable one, if I lived close, i'd drink in here.Cheers

Jacket potato was not nice. Over cooked. Prawns smothered in sauce and so small prawns . The salad was poor. I will not go back.

Got a fork to eat the soup with, butter for the toast was fluid, jacket potato was only half eatable (old ?), fish finger i.o. fish. Result: Very poor performance from staff and food quality. Can not be recommended.

Great food I would recommend to everyone as it all home made

As a solo visitor to the area wanting to watch an Arsenal match a lot of the town centre pubs looked really rough and I’m no shrinking violet. The Whittington Cat looked welcoming and had been redocorated and looked nice. Pleasant welcome and £2.95 for a pint of Stella!! Pub full of drunks and the odd inbred but they left me alone to watch the match. Given lack of choice this is a very good option.
