Our family were turned away when wanting an evening meal, with the excuse that ‘the ovens are broken’, although residents were being served. The implication is that residents have dedicated ovens - yeah right… Roughly translated, it’s been a quiet evening so we’ve closed early. Needless to say, we shan’t be returning.

We tried to order one of the dishes that was listed as gluten free on the menu, however (after the waitress had said the dish was gf) were told by the chef that the menu was wrong and the dish was not gluten free. When we asked what we could order that was gluten free, we were told that we could not order anything at all that would be gluten free, despite 4 dishes being marked on the menu as gf. We were told that the menu was wrong… It’s a real shame, as we’ve had great experiences of gluten free food here in the past and we were planning to eat and drink here for all 4 nights of our stay. I would advise avoiding the restaurant for anyone who needs to eat gluten free, as there are no gf options at all.

The bar room to the front, with the warm fire, was full when we arrived so we had to make do with the much cooler, less inviting, backroom. Limited options for vegetarians, so we had soup of the day and chips. The chips were amazing, although sadly the lentil soup was bland. It was something of a let down generally, as you'd imagine this place to be popular all year round (many folks simply taking the scenic drive to get there or others walking in the great range of fells that surround the Inn) and this should enable the owners to be a little more creative with the menu and be able to offer a better vegetarian/vegan selection. The Wasdale Inn owners should maybe look to the menu at the Sawmill in Nether Wasdale, to see how their closest competitors are doing it...this was definitely a much more pleasant experience for us.

We came here all three of our nights to eat and each time had great service and the table was always set up ready for us. Food here did the job we needed it too and was nice enough pub grub and is good enough for a nice meal as there isn't anywhere close as a competitor so the bar can get a little busy from guests of the hotel and walkers from nearby camps and B&B's. The food was always hot and everyone did enjoy their meals though which is the main thing and if any of my three different meals I can recommend it would have to be the burger. Few minor things to mention, portions were different sizes within our group and other tables. We were unable to split the bill although you can pay cash and card you can not split card payments, this does make it harder for larger groups. My advice would be to book a table in advance. I also would like to point out after reading other reviews that the guy who waited our table was always friendly and welcoming.

We visited the walkers bar a couple of times whilst camping at the NT site. Good ales and decent hearty food. Unlike a previous review mentioned there are plenty of covid-19 measures in place. Check in, sanitisers, pvc screens and table service. Our first visit service was a bit slow and our beer order was forgotten, but was quickly rectified once we flagged down another member of staff.

Visited the pub after climbing Scafell Pike and went to the beer garden for a drink. No one took our details for track and trace, no sanitisation of the tables, no anti bacterial anywhere and saw other customers come outside carrying drinks from the bar without wearing masks. A waiter took our order quickly but then that was the end of the good service. We waited over 40 minutes for our 2 drinks. 4 different staff asked if we had ordered and we enquired where our drinks were that we had already ordered. We were always told that there was only 1 person on the bar and there is a delay. This would be understandable for a 10-15 minute delay but not 40 minutes. We saw several other tables of people arrive, have their orders taken and then given their drinks before us. Clearly no organisation behind the bar and terrible service. We left after waiting 40 minutes and never received our drinks. Would not recommend this pub to anyone.

Good food, good beer, as always. We regularly visit this place on our many days in the local fells. Amazing location, great atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff. Whilst the tourists descend on the place in their droves, Wasdale Head know their stuff, and cater willingly for the walkers, fell runners, kayakers and others that need good, hearty food after a hard day. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available, and whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed.

The drive to the Wasdale Head Inn along Wast Water is reason enough to visit. The pub itself is old that brings a certain quaintness. The food was pretty nice and worth it. When you've eaten take a walk over the river and up the hill a bit and you'll come to Ritsons Force which when flowing is worth the short walk.

Wast Water is one of my favourite lakes. The inn is set in such a beautiful location, especially the tables outside, the ones at the rear run right along the stream. They don't have any working WiFi for customers, which in my mind is generally a sign the food is going to be meh. i.e they don't want you looking them up on TripAdvisor. But they have a captive audience as there's no other place to eat if you're hungry. The food was okay, nothing special. My burger tasted like it had been heated up in a microwave, but was edible. My partner has lasagne which she described as disappointing. If they improve the quality of their ingredients and want to produce food they are super proud of, this would be somewhere we'd go back to more often.

Can't totally blame the hotel most the problem is walkers, by the time i got through the barrage of abandoned cars i had lost a lot of interest in stopping there. I told the man controlling the car park i was after booking a room or a tent pitch if there were no rooms available and asked if i needed to go reception or to the bar and he informed me i needed to go around the back of the building. I did as instructed but couldn't find anywhere or anyone so tried the bar, which because of covid19 restrictions, you couldn't get into so went to the front to be told its around the back......to cut a long story short i never got a room, a tent pitch or even a pint. The valley is now a car park putting a black mark on the beauty of the place and after over 30 years of going there i can only rate it as not worth effort and won't be going back.

Like many others visiting Wasdale / Scafell we decided to visit the Inn for Coffee in the morning before our walk. We were greeted by a male waiter with longer hair who took our orders and was friendly and professional. A day or so later we visited the Inn again for an evening meal unfortunately the same cannot be said for the second visit. Our party of four was greeted by a older male waiter who to say he was blunt would be an understatement. Upon sitting at the table for 15/20 mins we were unsure if it was table service or an order at the bar system. So one member of our party decided to queue for a menu. He was then rudely told to sit down as he “would be wasting his time standing up”. The waiter finally then came to the table to take the order, during this there was no conversation or “little chat” but this was understandable as it was busy. During the evening we also heard the waiter taking orders / queries from other table. I was happy to see it wasn’t something I had said but his attitude was like that with everyone. Around 45 mins later the food arrived and a member of our group asked as he put her dish down “is this the vegetarian lasagna” his reply as he walked away was “it’s lasagna”. As he continued into the other room you could hear him loudly mutter under his breathe “it’s lasagna”. The food was slightly cold as also mentioned by the table besides us. We also had to ask for a missing side dish which never arrived until after we had finished. To add insult to injury we tried ordering a desert to be greeted by the “friendly” attitude of the waiter again.I understand restaurants / pubs get busy however manors cost nothing. Maybe the older waiter can take some tips from his younger colleague.

Came across the Wasdale Head Inn by chance whilst exploring the lakes, were allowed to park in their car park while we ate (due to some mobility issues) despite it being "residents only".Staff were very friendly, especially to our dogs, and the food was really good (probably the best we had out during our holiday).Due to the pandemic they had to put in place a one-way system, with screens between the booths and hand sanitiser on arrival, etc. so we felt safe eating there (despite it being only a few days after the easing of the lockdown at the start of July).Location is fantastic too!

My latest visit here was with a walking buddy when attempting the Inn Way for the second time - on the previous occasion with my wife, I twisted my ankle badly just before reaching this pub and had to abort the walk, spending two weeks on crutches and a further 2-3 months recovering. The pub was not quite as good as I remembered it - both food and beer were OK rather than special, and the service just about matched this. It was quite busy as there are few options in the locality, but I just wonder whether they don't feel the need to try too hard as a result?

We stopped at this restaurant at the Wasdale Head Inn for some lunch and a break from our roadtrip in the Lakes. The best thing about this place for us was all the dogs in there. One seemed to be a "restaurant dog" as it seemed to know it's way around everywhere. The dog was begging at the tables which I guess some guests might be bothered about but it didn't bother us at all and the dog was very cute. Our food was good and nicely flavoured but nothing special about it, quite a normal pub meal I would say. We got everything we needed and had a nice break before we headed back on the roads.

We came to this pub after climbing Scarfell Pike- my partner had come here before and had said the food was great so we were looking forward to it. We ordered the 14 hour beef brisket stew with crusty bread, and the Glamorgan sausages and mash. The Glamorgan sausages were tasty, however the mash and gravy was average and the veg over cooked. The brisket stew however was horrible-the beef was touch and chewy, the veg looked like it’d come out of a frozen veg bag, and the sauce had no richness - the whole thing was really bland. The bread wasn’t even crusty either - just a standard bread roll. We are the meals as we were starving from our walk, but I’d highly suggest finding somewhere else to eat if you’re in this part of the lakes. We spoke to one of the staff members about how disappointing the food was, and she said there was a new head chef since my partner last came. Not good value!!! Fine for a pint but avoid eating here.

A nice little end to our trip to Wasdale/Wastwater. We stopped off here for a short break before a long journey home. My husband likes to sample the local ales and wasn't disappointed. I prefer a coffee and cake, especially as I'm the driver! I too wasn't disappointed, the latte was lovely and lemon drizzle cake was one of the best I've had! The service was good, although I was served the wrong cake in the first place, but received a heartfelt apology and this was immediately rectified. Very old-fashioned inside but a nice little country pub which we will visit again when we're back in Wasdale.

Drank the local brewed Tractor Shed ale and ate a Giant Yorkshire Pudding, mash & veggies, lovely...great staff and a chilled, friendly place. Perfect after a rainy wet misty day up Scafell Pike. Easy walk back to the campsite at Wasdale. Looking forward to next time!

We called here on a fairly busy Saturday after hiking Scafell Pike because it was recommended to us. It was ok. I was planning on having something to eat, the menu was ok and there were a few veggie options but I ended up just settling for a coffee (I think possibly because I was too tired to be bothered eating more than anything else).

Heh, prepared for an exhilarating journey as you head over Wrynose and Hardknott pass to the Wasdale Head Inn. In fact, take time to visit the outline of the Roman Fort, wondering what the Romans were thinking all those hundreds of years ago.

Visited while on holiday in the Lake District. We had to drive along a very narrow, single track road to get there, a bit hairy at times especially if someone came the other way But what fantastic scenery !!. My son-in-law and myself ordered the chicken club sandwich (which was enormous) and came with salad and crisps really tasty and only cost just under £5 each. My wife and daughter both ordered potatoe in its jacket one had a chilli mixed bean filling and the other prawns in marie rose sauce, Again these meals were under £5 each , the best lunch we have had for a very long time, very tasty. Would recommend if you are in the area.

Had food and drink here after scafell, beer was good, food nothing to shout about but reasonably filling, I had gammon, good portion. Prices a bit high, £60 for three mains and a few beers but considering the captive market I wouldn't say they were too bad. Would call in again.

Having climbed Scafell Pike we went to this country inn full of hopeful expectation. The ale was very poor served in a dirty glass. Dog poo left on the patio next to our table. The food was dire, chips tasted of fish, vegetables undercooked and the meats cooked badly. I would say avoid at all costs but as it's at the only pub in the valley it's tricky. A captive audience are exploited. Very poor.

My title is a bit unfair. The young folks who were working at this place on a rainy, summer day were pleasant enough and did seem to be trying to offer decent service to customers. My companion and I ordered a pot of tea and some soup. There was nothing remarkable about anything that we ate or drank, and it was pricey for what we got. But when you're the only game in town, competition is not an incentive to offer better product for lower prices. However, it might make it more likely that people will remember, the next time they decide to visit Wastwater, to bring their own food and drink and have it in their cars.

There are a number of pubs in great mountain locations that share another characteristic - poor food. It's such a shame that the potential of this wonderful location is wasted. Fish and chips came out as scraps with slimy fish in batter that tasted like a fritter. Chicken nuggets appeared reconstituted, and the scampi batter was under cooked. Beer was good, so come for a drink but eat somewhere else.

Excellent range of beers and gins, best steak pie in Lake District (sorry Britannia), only let down slightly by range of puddings. Unfortunately couldn't book restaurant as a wedding had taken it over. Suggest you do book as very and rightly so, popular

Friends and I stayed over at the campsite for the previous weekend, we had dinner in the Wasdale Head Inn on the Saturday evening. We arrived at 8pm, to be told there would be an hour's wait. Much later, well after 9pm our food arrived. No apology, and while the food wasn't bad, it was not rave worthy and pricey for what it was. We thought it was "busy", the staff said it was quiet, yet we had to eat outside in the evenings chill. Hmm, I wouldn't want to be here on a "busy" evening. The beer is OK!

Four of us called in here for lunch and all decided to have jacket potatoes, with a variety of fillings. Everyone of us enjoyed our meals, and were surprisingly full up when we'd finished eating. Didn't have room for pudding. A dog friendly pub in a wonderful setting. Make sure you visit the pack horse bridge behind the Inn and the smallest church in England, St Olafs, whilst you are here.

We spent 4 days in Wasdale and Nether wasdale at a campsite, wen't up to Scafell Pike and after we went to the pub to have something to eat. Surprisingly the food was more than enough and above average so was surprised. Not even over priced as you would think as it is in the middle of nowhere. Friendly, helpful and welcoming staff, good beers, nice ice creams, the haddock was big enough for 2 adults on my plate so I really had to fight it off (and now I weigh more than ever!). So all in all if you made it up to Scafell then you deserve a meal or a beer after your 5 hour walk and this pub is in the right place. I'm sure we will be back next year.

Very bleak day and called in for coffee and cake. It was open early and due to terrible weather it was empty. Can't fault the service, can't fault the coffee and cake and can't fault the cleanliness. It is in the middle of nowhere so on sunny days and holidays I expect it's really busy. Would definitely go again.

After having swum the length of Wast Water and run up a mountain or two straight after food was next on the agenda.I had the cumberland sausage and mash in the giant yorkshire pudding. It was tasty and very filling which much needed. The chocolate brownie and ice cream was a great way to finish the meal. The beer selection is excellent and I think I sampled my fair share of different ones. Thankfully I was camping in the Inns' field so didn't have far to stagger.

Visited on a lovely sunny Sunday and was surprised just how busy this remote spot can be. We managed to nab a table shortly after the Inn opened for lunch - they were full 30 minutes later. Great beer and a decent menu - for those with a hearty appetite. For those not wanting to venture onto the surrounding peaks there were a number of short walks along the valley bottom that kick off from the Inn.

A great looking pub in a beautiful location. Loads of benches outside to enjoy the scenery. The pub was very busy on the evening that I visited, but managed to get a table even though there were 8 of us. There was a long queue for drinks, it was orderly but took about 15 minutes to get served. I've seen a few reviews on here saying that there weren't enough staff on shift and this seemed the case when I visited. You have to queue at a different bar to order food, so this was then a 10 minute queue on top. The food then took just over an hour to arrive. I had the steak & ale pie which I didn't feel was worth the money. It was more of a pasty than a pie, very dry and didn't appear to be homemade which was disappointing. They had ran out of homemade chips, despite it only being 7.30pm when we ordered, so I had to have fries. These were pretty low quality and were cold. We were only served 7 meals out of the 8, but the waiter managed to bring out the forgotten meal quite quickly, before the rest of us had finished eating. We traveled from St Bees to eat here. I don't think we will eat here again as there are pubs serving far better food closer to us. Like I said at the start though, it is a lovely pub to look at and would definitely go for a drink and an ice cream if in the area again, especially as you can take dogs in.

Good, generally well cooked food at not exorbitant prices. The bar was almost full on both evenings we visited with a great atmosphere. On our first night the lasagne wasn't quite heated through but we didn't question that. Our fault because the next night we wanted more cheese for the pasta and the staff could not have been more helpful and brought a large bowl of extra cheese...

Great dinner in the bar here. There were a few 'availability issues' on the menu, but that's to be expected in a remote location such as this. Alternative choices were delicious, the beer was good, as were the puddings. This is a great, relaxing place to spend the evening.
