We stayed in our VW Camper at Scallow Top, about 10 mins walk on a quiet lane. Ate at the White Mare every night, food was really good, with great choices for non meat and meat eaters alike. Staff were lovely and friendly, and tucked away at the back of the hotel was a small bar, that had the football on. Made for a great end to our day, after some challenging g hikes in the western lakes

Living fairly local to the Whitemare we are aware of the difficulties the pub has faced since covid (like many others), but it was great to visit the pub last night and experience a first class pub meal, nothing fancy, just honest pub grub, and at a reasonable price with good service. It has always been a nice pub to visit, nice decor & pleasant dining room, and we look forward to returning soon.

We decided to try the White Mare for a bit of a change after it recently started serving food. We were not disappointed the food was first class. Started with prawn cocktail as they were out of Thai fish cakes and was not disappointed with my choice. For mains we had Thai green curry with half rice and half chips and our other main was salmon fillet with chips and veg. Both came piping hot and clearly just prepared. Mains were very enjoyable and filling, so much so couldn't manage the desert!! Service was first class the waiter was pleasant and accommodating and everyone else was very attentive and anything we asked was no trouble to them. All in all a lovely night and will definitely be back .

Excited to see the White Mare open once again after covid so went for lunch. Drinks were served really quickly by a friendly member of staff. This is where the positives ended. The restaurant is in 2 sections. We were the only ones in and for some reason were put on a table looking at a large area of wall where the wallpaper was hanging off revealing a very damp and black wall. Surely this area shouldn't have been used until it was sorted? - it certainly wasn't nice to look at. Ordered our food. 2 of our orders hadn't been handed to the chef so the rest of us had almost finished our food before the final ones arrived. One part of the meal didn't arrive until after everyone had finished. The pie filling was really salty and the mash potato had obviously been frozen in portions and then microwaved, was tasteless and the outside was dried up. When the bill arrived they had charged the main menu prices and not the lunchtime offers - this was sorted. Very disappointed and I'm afraid we wont be returning.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Having dined here a number of times in the past couple of years on our last visit we were incredibly disappointed. We have visited for lunch, evening and Sunday lunch before. First of all there’s no lunch menu just the general (evening menu) which I won’t grumble about too much but some might....secondly the prices on said menu seem to have sky rocketed for example 18.95 for a deconstructed hot pot....14.50 for a burger and no starters apart from soup under £7....the wait was around 45 minutes possibly more, the waitress knew the wait had been a while and did come over in her defence and apologised for the wait, however at 3.10 for a 330ml Pepsi a simple offer of some drinks would’ve improved this experience massively as most places would’ve offered as standard, explained the chef was alone and had a few tables before us, given there was only one table of 6 and one table of 3 before us this shouldn’t of caused too much trouble should it? For a pub displaying British pub awards so proudly but seemingly struggling. All be it these awards are from a few year ago and a lot can change in that time. As it seemingly has. £39 for 3 330ml Pepsi’s, a burger, and a alasagne and chips is very steep. unfortunately the quality didn’t match the price, the burger was a rushed ball of mince meat where the cheese wasn’t even melted and simply fell apart upon touch, we didn’t complain on the premises as we felt there wasn’t a great deal that could be done seen as though there wasn’t a great deal of interest surrounding the 45 minute wait and to request say a new burger would’ve taken even longer!! Had many great meals here all be it it’s never been too busy or too quick which I don’t mind as quality takes time as does homemade well done fresh food but unfortunately seems to have drastically gone down hill. Will be unlikely to return. Sorry guys.

Nor any alternative normal menu - I asked.Leaving us with no option but to try and find somewhere else.Insult was added to injury to receive a second phone call 5 minutes later to say that the Chef would put the normal menu on now. Too late.A lesson in incompetence (just how do you run out of Sunday lunches for the people who have booked to visit?) and poor communication (We would still have been going if they had said they would do the ordinary menu on the first call.)

Sunday lunch arrived there only 3 other tables occupied (So no excuse for bad service) We were seated and then ignored we ended up going for our own drinks. And getting our own menus. Our Order was finally taken after a table which arrived after us was served with drinks and had their order taken first Waited a while for starter which was creamy mushrooms lovely. Main course turkey also beautiful compliments to the chef. Unfortunately our table was never cleared after main course we sat and sat and sat actually for 30 minutes other tables left without being offered or having sweets we continued to wait still looking at dirty main course plates. We finally gave up and went to the bar to pay without having a pudding or even been offered one. To our disgust the waiting on staff were stood at the bar one with her bag and the other guy got into a car outside which pulled up whilst we were paying. The lady behind the bar asked if everything was ok so I said that we would have liked a sweet but no one had cleared our table or offered. Sorry would have been nice. She actually said NOTHING. Honestly no response just took our money and gave our change. That was worse than not been offered a sweet in my opinion.

We booked for 8 and arrived at 7.30 for drinks. The menus were given when we were shown our table after 8. We waited 1 and 1/2 hours for our food. There were a few tables seated so I expected they were busy but one of the tables of about 16 had pre-ordered their meal the day before and still had to wait for the same time. Nobody warned us of the wait, or gave us the menu early to start the process. The staff were friendly and attentive - possibly too much when all 3 girls came one after the other to check our meal and drinks were ok. :-) However the other thing which has grated on me was that the girl who cleared our table piled all the dishes up in front of me (dressed in white) and proceeded to pour the mussel shells and left overs onto the top plate while we all held our breath waiting for the disaster. I did not appreciate other people's left overs and mussel shells being scraped onto a plate front of me and suggested that she took the 4 plates she had and to return for the others. I have tried to visit to politely suggest some training on etiquette but have been unable to find the establishment open when I have been passing. The service and the huge delay in food slightly marred a special meet up with old friends. A shame as the bar staff and general cheerfulness was pleasant. They did reduce one of the dishes as an apology when the bill was paid which was nice and unasked for .

Booked table for husband's 70th birthday lunch. Looked at online menu at 1.00 with a 2.00 table booking - Pan Seared Scallops with Haggis Bon Bons - sounds good, Plaice rolled with Salmon and Spinach with a white wine cream, grapes and tarragon or Sea Bass with a cream and white wine sauce and Dauphinoise potatoes - Yes definitely the Plaice. Arrived at table and the menu we were presented with was definitely not the one on line and was told "that's the old menu" - but it's still on line. So what were the choices then - Prawn cocktail Oh come on out of date, boring and tasteless with two small fillets of sea bass which was dry and served with a sauce and boiled and roast spuds certainly not worthy of the 17.95 price tag, Husband had the beef and he said that was OK - it was a roast!!. Restaurants please note just because it's Sunday it does not mean that everyone wants a roast - I do not eat meat and the options were disappointing. We ordered a Bloom Gin, which was supposed to come with Apple, Mint and Lime however it came with only a slice of lemon instead.I enquired at the bar as to why, only to be told "The freezer is broken" unsure why we were not told that upon ordering as we would have ordered a Gordons or similar instead however we were not.Just a bit disappointing as one of the main selling points is the Gin menu. Fair enough breakdowns happen but a sign on the menu or to be told upon ordering is all it would have taken to avoid disappointment, even an apology at the bar would have gone a long way!

Shown to a table quickly ( there were plenty available ) by the lady who was serving behind the bar, food order also taken quickly. However to took an inordinate amount of them for our meals to arrive. The food was nothing particularly special and fairly expensive for what we got. The bar service was hit and miss as the lady left the bar to talk to a supplier and the man who took over was busy doing other things. The place was nicely fitted out, bit of a change from the last time we visited, about forty years ago, but then it was a very active pub that sold 'pub food' and the place to go. maybe it is a bit better in an evening.

My main of the sea bass en papillote was excellent but left absolutely no room to try dessert!

My partner and I ate here. The pub looks great from the outside and inside is just as lovely (not much parking though). The food was amazing, good portions, good value and very tasty! Staff were friendly but a little slow considering it was a quiet evening. We had the fondue to finish! Amazing!!!!

Stayed here1 night with my husband and we were made welcome from the start of our stay till we left. The room was spacious, modern and well looked after with little extras that make it special. The bar had plenty of choice including a good choice of gin, the bar staff couldn't do enough for you including giving you directions to places of interest. We had evening meal in the bar area and breakfast in the dining room. The choice of starters and mains was varied and the prices reasonable. The food was hot and well presented and very enjoyable. Breakfast was made to order and was also hot nothing seemed too much trouble. The owners were present a couple of times and chatted about the local area. We would recommend a stay here to anyone it was great.

Today together with some of my family I had lunch at The White Mare, in Beckermet. Lunch was booked for 12:30, we arrived at 12:33. There were 8 adults and my 3 year old grandson. The restaurant had 16 people in when we arrived most of whom were eating or about to.. Our order was taken early after arrival, we then waited 45 minutes before our food arrived, standard Sunday Roast so nothing needing to be cooked from fresh and no starters. The food was fine if not a little on the lukewarm side nothing that can't be found in any number of places nearby. We ate our food and waited an age, probably 25 minutes for our table to be cleared, eventually I had to ask if it could be cleared as we were ordering pudding. We then waited another 20 for the puddings to arrive, 6 of them in a now almost empty restaurant. We gave up after twice asking for them to be served. They had not even been portioned out I believe.Food average but plan to take sleeping bags if you go for 3 courses. One young teenage man was doing everything, rest of staff were either eating themselves or chatting in the bar area about a Gin event that was starting later in the afternoon. What a shame that the speed of service hasn't gotten any better over the last year or so.

We were a family of 7 three were children. We were seated at a great table and served promptly. The small bites we shared as starters and were great, especially the king prawns and chorizo. The sausage and lasagne both went down very well. Great job

Our meal was delicious, the portions were very generous and everything was so tempting that I'm sure I should have shared some of my courses. We had moules for starters and that was practically a meal in itself, served with a creamy garlic and herb sauce. All of our party chose the Barbary duck breast for mains, which was roasted to juicy perfection and served on a bed of wilted pak choi alongside a variety of other veg. But who could resist a home made pear and frangipane tart, a Bailey's cheesecake or even a chocolate fondue? Not us! It was delicious.

Two couples ate in the White Mare restaurant as part of our stay at the Inn. The food was first class, some of the best we've ever had, and the prices were not too expensive either. I would highly recommend this Inn and restaurant to anyone thinking of staying and/or eating there.

Had some great starters with nice service throughout, but the fish and chips-- allegedly cod- wasn't!!-- it looked like it was straight out of the freezer, was greyish and very thin.Wanted to send it back but being a shy brit and not wanting to upset my guests-- i told the barman taking my bill only to find out that someone else had sent theirs back!!-- wish I had done the same now!!Shame given all the accolades the place is getting!Wont be going back or recommending.

We have been to this pub as a family for nearly 40 years. We were able to introduce a new member of the family making four generations. The service was quick and helpful. The starter course of prawns was good. The main courses of chicken and sea bass were excellent. It is obvious that the chef is able to introduce real flavour into the food and can employ more complex culinary techniques. The wines were not cheap but very good. The whole family including my granddaughter enjoyed their visit here.

Well it was a Monday night, not the busiest time for a bar, restaurant I suppose. One member of staff seemed to be expected to provide service in the restaurant as well as serve at the bar. Hence service was slow. To be fair the food was lovely, tasty and well presented and for that reason I rate it as very good. Both main courses and deserts appear to be prepared and cooked freshly in the kitchen, rather than bought in from Brake Brothers. Each dish we ate had a small taste sensation, the honeycomb toffee with the panacotta, the intense flavour of the summer pudding, both very memorable. We have visted this pub through many incarnations over the last 30 years. Under the new owners it seems to have lost much of its character, with wooden floors, heavy wood furniture, and minimalist decor it reminds me of many a trendy city centre bar in Manchester or Leeds, or for that matter pubs in Scotland. If you can get the food so good why not the decor?

My husband and I really enjoyed our lunch date last Tuesday . The avocado salsa with duck and red pepper paint was lovely as a starter . My hubbie had goats cheese brûlée with olive bread. Amazing. The steaks we asked for medium and they were both cooked fabulously . I hope the peppercorn sauce was home made as it was Devine . Service was swift and very friendly. A lovely lunch on a wet Cumbrian day in a lovely setting .

We ate as part of a large group in the evening and were very impressed. The place itself has lovely decor and surroundings and there's a very convenient play park opposite. The staff were brilliant from arrival to departure, professional yet friendly and always ensured we had enough drinks - nothing was too much trouble. The landlady/owner was also very friendly. The menu was varied and reasonably priced. By far the best meal we've had out in a while, really high quality. The draught lagers were also very nice.We will definitely be returning soon.

I've been less than complimentary about this place, but having been back a couple of times recently, I have to say I am now a fan. Last week we went for lunch and I had one of the best Thai beef salads I have ever had - also, my wife's lasagne was deliciously authentic (and enormous!) - well done.

We stayed two nights in the court yard, the room was lovely, the court yard very pretty with seats and a BBQ.We were disappointed at breakfast as each morning our bacon was cremated,I did say on the first morning but it made no difference, this is how they must like to eat it.Dinner was very good and my started, baked goats cheese was just to die for.Must mention the boys in the bar, they just could not do enough for us.

We stayed here for two nights in order to climb Scafell Pike. 25 minutes drive from Wasdale head. We arrived late on the Friday and left on Sunday morning. The room was above the pub. Very comfortable double bed with wooden interior throughout. The room was a good size with a very modern bathroom. No noice from the pub heard within the room. We had a drink in the pub on Friday evening which was full of locals. On the Saturday evening we had a lovely dinner and although we hadn't booked they fitted us in. The breakfast was included with fresh coffee, orange juice and a choice of continental and full english. I recommend the full english breakfast which gave us all the energy we needed to climb up the mountain. Lovely stay at the hotel very scenic area I only wished I had stayed longer.
