Great pub with excellent and friendly staff

Walked in from a long walk off Dartmoor with no booking and a family of four, with two kids. Couldn’t be more pleased to find this Gem of a family country pub run by 3 ladies. Community atmosphere with a lovely welcome and warm fire. Hearty, quality food. Probably the best sticky toffee pudding we’ve tasted. You will not be disappointed. We will be back! Thank you once again for a lovely meal.

Carvery was excellent, meat was tender and potatoes crispy. The children’s meals were really high quality, and they were very happy playing on the climbing equipment before and after food. Staff were friendly and very accommodating of our large party. Thank you,!

Booked 12 for dinner, we had pre ordered our meals, it came to the table very hot. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. We would not hesitate to return.

Booked a table last minute to have a Sunday roast. Food was absolutely delicious. The Beef was cooked perfectly and the roast potatoes were as good as my Grandad used to make! The staff were very friendly and the pub was lovely. We will definitely be visiting again.

I had a family occasion at the White Thorn, I can't fault the food or service. Very friendly atmosphere & always making sure we were happy with everything. Friendly staff & good food are we would want & certainly got that. The plus was as the weather was good the children could go out in the garden.

Spent a very enjoyable evening, great food and wine, stayed the night in campervan in the carpark then had a delicious breakfast before we set off, we highly recommend The White Thorn Inn

I'm a local but won't be going back. Took dogs for a walk and came back for a friendly pint and lunch. Forty minutes after ordering, with no explanation and no apology for the absence of food, no word at all in fact, I felt it was time to make my excuses and leave. Apparently a large party had arrived earlier and ordered lunch. Fair enough. But when I'd ordered lunch for my wife and daughter, there was no suggestion there'd be a delay of any kind. So we ordered another drink and waited... and waited... still nothing. It doesn't take a genius to work out that at lunchtime people don't want to sit drinking wine on an empty stomach - or perhaps it does? As we left, the bar help called into the kitchen "Don't worry about the order for Table 7 - they've left." So, 40 minutes after ordering, the chef hadn't even started preparing our lunch. That's not what I call hospitality. Byee.

Stayed in our van overnight while visiting our daughter at uni, had great dinner and breakfast, staff and locals all very welcoming, highly recommended

This is now a great village pub with hearty pub grub fare. Recent change of management, great chilled atmosphere and a friendly welcome. The decor needs some love but it’s clean welcoming and a fun place to be.

Thank You to the White Thorn team for squeezing us in for a meal on a really busy night. This is the first time I have been back to the pub that was my ‘local’ in my teens. We had a very warm reception even though everyone was really busy, the food and drinks were excellent. My only thought on the pub itself, and I hope the new owner won’t take offence, it’s lacking character inside. The owner is obviously a very proud military man, let’s see some of that and local history in the pub, bring some of your personality into the place 👍🏻 However that is certainly not off putting, go and visit the White Thorn, you won’t be disappointed!

Smashing pub on the borders of Plymouth and Dartmoor. I had a nice pint of Summerskill's Scrum-Half Nectar amber. We ate here and the beef lasagne I had was top notch. Wife had cajun chicken burger and father-in-law, the hunter's chicken. Both of them raved about the chips! Dog friendly establishment and the landlord and barmaid made a right fuss of our cockapoo, Molly. This made us feel very welcome. We will be back.

The Sunday roast was delicious as was our dessert. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Couldn't fault the cleanliness neither.

Good location and food (the double cooked chips were incredible!) but the pub itself was really cold and the bar staff kept skipping songs/the phone the speakers were connected to kept cutting out. Shame!

Went today for Sunday roast it was superb . Probably best we have had in a long time excellent price as well plenty of veg & meat. Staff very friendly & welcoming . It’s so nice for us to have somewhere decent in Plympton to eat . We shall be returning very soon

This lovely family-owned pub was my location for an overnight stop in my self sufficient van. The location was solid and felt very safe for a solo female travelling through Dartmoor. The drinks were good, service excellent and people (both those serving and the locals) were so nice. Highly recommend

Fantastic pub. Tidy but not posh. A very generous and delicious stilton and beef pie, and a pint of cold cider for £20. It was so good I missed my bus!

New owners in summer if 2023, still a really friendly pub, nice atmosphere, good home cooked food at reasonable prices. We had a lovely roast followed by a fantastic homemade cheesecake. Great beers from Dartmoor brewery & regular guest ale, currently Bays Beery Head. Great service, a great place to go after a lovely walk down by the river Meavy.

Great family friendly pub set in the edge of Dartmoor . The landlord the team provided an excellent service the food is really tasty too. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for great food or a drink after a walk across the Moors set in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The lovely new landlords went out of their way to provide a fantastic service during a 90th Birthday celebration even when the numbers exceeded those planned including a couple of vegetarians who unexpectedly joined us at the last minute and I hadn't catered for! We were allowed to decorate a corner with party banners and balloons and were all made to feel very welcome and my Mum had a truly memorable birthday. Thank you to the White Thorn Inn!!

Only pub around with a lovely sunset garden....the excellent, reasonably priced food was just a bonus!

Brilliant family friendly country inn, close to great walks. We booked in for Sunday lunch, the food came out hot and in good time. The football was on and being enjoyed by the locals which added to the experience. The outdoor play area was a hit with our son and they even have parking for horses as well as a large carpark. I tried a few of the local beverages and scotch whisky or two, all well received after a lovely afternoon. Well worth a trip if your looking for an authentic experience.

What an amazing local pub. Served delicious food, gave a warm friendly welcome and drinks choice was fabulous. We will definitely return. Our son had fun on the children's play area. I loved that dogs were welcome and I also was told that there is a small field to park your horse ! This made me smile... how unique.. The pub had signs up for live music at the weekends and also had guest ales. A right little treat for anyone to discover.. You will.not be disappointed

Laura and George were very welcoming on arrival. Menu had plenty gluten free options which is a rarity. Great range of wine choices and ales. Family and pooches are made welcome with a great beer garden and play area. We will be back! 5* service through and through!

Had the best time tonight we just turned up to celebrate our sons birthday and couldn't of been more welcomed by the landlord and landlady and staff, the food was amazing and very generous plates thank you so much all at the white thorn we will definitely be coming again 😀 😊

Had a Sunday roast here and it was very good. Plenty of veg and gave extra gravy when asked. Food was very well priced. Also a great variety of drinks at the bar. Accept well behaved dogs. Big car park with extra space on the road outside. Highly recommended. Thanks. We will certainly visit again.

Lara and George have taken over the pub. It's now open regularly. It's clean, friendly(dogs as well) and a good selection of drinks including hot beverages. I've had several meals there and I can say "the food is very good". The White Thorn is recommended!

We were so glad we decided to pop into this pub for lunch. The new owners and staff were so friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent, and the real ale (Dartmoor Jail Ale and Lengend) are kept to a very high standard. A great pub to go to after a walk on the Moor with the children or dogs. We will definitely recommend to friends and family and be returning very soon. Well done for taking on a pub in this climate, keep doing what you're doing and all the best for the future 😊

Brilliant new landlords, friendly, welcoming and bringing a great country pub back to all its glory. Food was fantastic, lots of choices for vegetarians and gluten free! We had a variety and some deserts and will definitely be back soon. Lovely to see it’s dog friendly (and horse friendly!) with a play area for the children outside too.

Absolutely fabulous meal highly recommend the black pudding scotch wand melted camembert the food was out of this world will highly recommend it can't wait

Once again the Princetown Retirement Fellowship returned to The White Thorn after a long Covid Lockdown, to be warmly welcomed by Mike and the staff. We had made reservations for a pre-Christmas Lunch. Having settled down around the log fire with glasses full of Dartmoor's famous Ales we soon quenched our thirst and were ready for our meals. We were not disappointed. Every single one of the group o fourteen agreed that the meals were excellent. After a few more drinks to wash down their meals, the group bade farewell to our host Mike having decided to return again in the spring of 2022.

We went to see Gaz Brookfield, we arrived in afternoon for some food before. The food Luke made for us was amazing, chunky chips with a veggie burger, we cleared our plates. It was a simple and satisfying meal. Would highly recommend you try the food. We also enjoyed the music and selection of beers. Mike allowed us to stay over night in our campervan. This is such a great pub. Very friendly and even got to see gin and tonic, the resident goats.

We haven’t had roast as good as this in a long while. The portion was more than adequate, nice selection of veg & the beef was very tender. Would happily eat roast here again as there is a very good selection of drinks and a friendly atmosphere to go with the very tasty roast.

Terrible service, loud drunks everywhere, stinks of fags, whoever the landlord is he’s lost control of this place. You can always tell when the local pub has no locals in it, just outsiders running riot. Don’t waste your time.

Should be a good place but it isn’t . Foul language from other customers. Salad limp and covered in dressing, not requested but used to cover up the poor quality. Sticky tables. Not entitled to 5 food hygiene rating as new food business operator on day of visit.

We travelled some distance to visit this pub. We hoped for a nice meal and a lovely country ambience! The service was dreadful, the smell of cigarette smoke wafted through the pub from people smoking outside. It was so loud in the pub, we couldn't hear one another talk. Sticky tables and unclean tables. After 45 minutes, we asked where our food order was, and the waiter (after 10 minutes) came back and replied that they were just about to cook it! This was now 8:30 pm. We walked out and we won't be returning. No recommendations to visit this pub!

This place has a lovely beer garden to sit outside in the sunshine, also beautifully done on the inside. It is dog friendly and i did notice they keep on top of the water bowls for the dogs. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food was great. Literally nothing not to like!

The owners at the White Thorn inn know how to run a great pub - the proper way! Shaugh Prior is one of the most beautiful villages on Dartmoor that you could visit and this pub does it justice with loads of green space and views - live music - great atmosphere with an outdoor cocktail bar and seating - and people who remember human connection and still know how to have fun and laugh! Recommend to all, walkers, families and anyone in between!

Have recommended this pub to everyone for there brilliant pub food, wow Covid has ruined this. Just freezer food now, such a shame as such a nice pub and garden area for kids and a nice drink in the sun.

Lovely pub with a great atmosphere, nice little play park area for the kids. Unfortunately the food wasn’t great was more or less “Iceland” food and wasn’t great for the prices, served on a paper plate to which it flew off the table sending the food everywhere, bit disappointed really as it was a great pub for everything else☹️

Went here yesterday for lunch and it was very busy. Three Snacks for £10.00 was obviously very popular and I think caught the Pub out as they didn’t know so many would turn upIt was still a pleasant lovely Bach with the kids playing in the garden

No comimos aquí en esta ocasión, pero lo intentaríamos si nos quedáramos más tiempo. Nos detuvimos aquí para tomar una copa después de un alegre paseo por los páramos. Fue una noche encantadora entre semana, por lo que no estuvo demasiado ocupada y la posibilidad de sentarse en la taberna al aire libre y reírse de las cabras fue bienvenida. La cerveza real estaba bien cuidada y el servicio era eficiente. Aparecerá de nuevo si pasa.

Excellent food and quick efficient service to 50 guests. Congratulations to the chef and the bar staff. Pets corner outside near the beer garden is fun for the children.

We popped into The White Thorn after a short walk down at Shaugh Bridge. A lovely friendly welcome in a cosy pub with the log burner going.We had a burger and hunters chicken, it was amazing and loads of it as well. Fantastic flavours in the burger and the chicken, the coleslaw was gorgeous. I highly recommend The White Thorn and we will be going again sometime with the rest of the family.

Our party of 26 seniors booked an early Christmas lunch at the White Thorn Inn at the beginning of December. The staff were welcoming and the food and drinks were excellent. Every one of our group was absolutely delighted with their meals. We shall definitely return.

We booked a table over the phone for a family get together on a Sunday, very disappointed to find that after ordering the drinks, there was only a carvery on offer, most of us don't like carvery! There was no mention of that when we booked, bit poor we thought. Really didn't enjoy the food as potatoes were not crispy & vegetables were lukewarm, beef itself was actually OK. Would have been nice is someone had said sorry, but all we got was a shrug.

Came here for Lunch really cold outside but lovely fire so nice and warm inside. Lovely friendly from the Barman Nick and the locals who all enjoyed a chat. I had the Steak and Ale Pie something everyone should have a large home cooked pie stuffed full of meat with a delicious gravy. We also had Samui and Gammon and Egg with the most delicious chips.Don’t pass this Pub by drop in they serve great Draft Beers and Cider

Nos dieron una cálida bienvenida y nos sirvieron rápidamente con nuestras bebidas antes del almuerzo. Las cervezas eran excelentes con una selección de cerveceros para elegir. We were greeted with warmth and friendliness .There were goats sheep and chickens outside who also greeted us and the meal was brilliant. The drive to the pub was scenic.We loved this place.

Went with my partner for a birthday meal, food was amazing, staff were among the nicest people I've met and the goats in the garden were delightful. Stayed overnight in the carpark in the camper and stayed for a while the next day too, we didn't want to leave! Lovely setting, good prices and amazing staff. Cannot wait to go back.
