A quintessential English pub, beautifully renovated and owned and ran by a lovely family. Excellent bitters on tap including Timothy Taylor landlord, good Guinness and lager selection too. Roaring log fire in the winter, decent outside seating area in the summer with some shade or sun trap, which ever you desire. Locals are tame and generally friendly 😃 . From the minute Olly greeted us it was obvious we were in a delightful gastro pub and we extremely well looked after by Jasmine and a very charming waitress called Izzy. Good was fabulous-especially the glazed plum tart. Of course the venue is only part of a perfect evening and being in stunning company may well have influenced my goodwill! I don't mean the food it was the place! Arrived for lunch which had been prebooked. We got asked if it wanted it in the restaurant or the gloomy bar! We were a bit taken aback and then got told it was warmer in the bar! It was not. There was a wood burner not lit, and I ended up keeping my coat on for the total meal. The lunch time menu had no starters although soup was listed with the main courses. I had the fish and chips and my friend had the eggs and gammon. My fish came out shaped very oddly as though it was going to fly off the plate. Peas were put in a small jug which was totally impractical. Would also have been good to have been offered mush peas. My friend said the gammon was the best she ever tasted. For dessert I had the apple pie which was very tart, and my friend the lemon sorbet. The venue was very gloomy with an attempt at Christmas with some tinsel thrown on a wall. Chairs were hard and did not match. No atmosphere at all - even if they had put the fire on it would have added some cheer.

Sunday lunch pre booked staff pleasant ,ordered drinks at bar on arrival ,we were seated at a table next to bar which was sticky and cutlery grubby looking,it took nearly half an hr to bring 7 drinks, only two ordered starters both camembert it came with a few rocket leaves and raw carrot strips, after eating both empty boxes showed cheese was out of date. The main menu very limited with only choice of pork or beef it was served with cauli parsnips broccoli and potato all out of freezer and not even cooked to al dente level, we were halfway through meal when chef came to table and said here is the rest of your veg,..cauli cheese,,yes cauli served with cauli, we had waited nearly an hr from having starter to be served with this excuse of a meal. why we chose to wait nearly another hr for pudding is anyones guess, someone was served fudge cake with raspberry ice cream, when pointed out to waitress it should be vanilla, the response was oh its all gone so this is all we have, needless to say it was sent back far quicker than it arrivec. The final insult was having axked for an itemised bill we were presented with a total amount on a scrap of paper, and told we would have to pay cash as no working card machine,we spent half an hour then working out from a menu the cost of each persons meal as we were paying per couple and then borrowing money off each other to find the amount of cash required ,,,,,never again.

Sunday lunch today, new people in charge so thought we would give it a go. Brilliant food before so a lot to live up in our opinion. Anyway , friendly welcome no issues there..... Then comes the food..... Sunday lunch menu nothing else. One pork and one Turkey ordered as no chicken available. Menu states that all things are made fresh , thus was not the case at all. The roast potatoes and parsnips and Yorkshire pudding were all out of the freezer. Tasteless broccoli , carrots and cauliflower all boiled to a watery taste. Gravy was actually ok but not enough. Meats were average but nothing like the old chef lee would serve up. A real shame to the village pub and the people who travelled to eat lees food.

My wife and I were on our date night and looking for a good "genuine" pub that served meals. Having cycled past this pub several times (but never entering), I suggested the White Swan as it looked like a propper pub. Upon entering we followed the sign to the dining section, where after a short wait we were greeted by the bar barmaid/waitress who took our drinks order and confirmed that there was seating available in the beer garden. The beer garden itself is quite eclectic, giving a slightly ramshakle impression. This however belies the truth! The staff were very friendly and happy to oblige to our requests. The food is awesome! We were hungry so we orderd the sharing platter as a starter - it could have been a meal in itself! It was fresh well cooked and well presented. The main meals were of epic proportions but also very tasty, well presented and served hot. We were so full we had to take doggy bags home with us! Simply put the food is great, the portions are epic and the service is quick and friendly. We will definitely be going again.

We visited mid June on a Saturday night, it was myself my partner and our friends. We fancied a meal out and didn't want to stay our local . Parking was a nightmare , the car park is tiny and people had parked all up the main road which made finding a space a nightmare. We got in and were greeted by a lovely young lad who took our drinks orders and then seated us quickly which was great. However the beer had just been changed and we didn't have much choice on what was on. A waitress came and took our order only to come back and tell us they had run out of what some of us had ordered. 20 minutes later we got out starters which were lovely and presented well. I had steak which was served just how I like it. They had none of the Creme Brûlée for dessert which was disappointing but the crumble was great. Bit distracting that people were quite loud in the garden and I could hear everything happening in the kitchen which was not ideal but it's a small pub And is extremely cosy and traditional. The prices are very reasonable and felt it was good for what we had, felt silly to tell the young waitress but the desserts had been missed off our bill. But she was good about it and we left feeling happy . Needs a big decor update but apart from that it's lovely. Just book in advance!!

I was really pleased that they could fit us in at the last minute: The Sunday roasts were good, enormous and we all left some on our plates, and the desserts were really, very good. Sadly we waited quite some time to be seated, although they were not busy. Disappointingly the beer was off, and had to be sent back with only one other ale to choose from. It isn't done up like a gastro pub, but a little tidy up wouldn't go amiss and a freshen up on the decor would make it look lovely. For quality and quantity of food It was very good value.

First impression from pulling into the small car park at the front is a little underwhelming - but dont let this put you off, Once inside it has the feel of a traditional English village pub which now concentrates on the restaurant side of things a bit more. Four of us arrived, (pre booked after reading reviews) and were seated in a cosy setting, nothing plush, just plain and simple. Our welcome was pleasant and we perused the menu. Lots of options plus specials too. Four starters were enjoyed, all plentiful and well presented. I had Brixworth Pate and was pleased to have ample fresh warm chunks of bread instead of the often proffered three thin pieces of toast/crackers. Mains were totally superb all round, I went for the Stilton topped Steak and Ale Pie, with chips and veg. As good as previous reviewers have stated! Again presentation was immaculate and the taste matched up to that standard, We all agreed it was amongst the best meals we have had in a long while. The quality of the food overall was superb and on receiving our bill at the end, for what we had I thought something had been missed off! Exceptional value and worth driving into the country for instead of staying "local"Give it a try...we will be returning ourselves in the future!

Where do I start? This is not your average pub grub! Everything is cooked from scratch which is why it's a brilliant place to eat for people with food intolerances, like me! If booked a few days in advance, alternatives can be cooked, like gluten free Yorkshire puddings and stuffing (for example), but even if it's a last minute booking I feel confident that I won't end up ill like I have at so many other places! Aside from that, the food is fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. The staff are really friendly, and the pub itself is family and pet friendly.

We went here for a family meal. It's a lovely, traditional English pub with surprisingly wonderful food. It's not the typical pub grub, but has a thorough menu which is well presented and delicious. We had scampi, liver, gammon and lasagne so had a varied selection. The chips are wonderful, the liver tender, the gammon huge with a perfectly fried egg and the salad is large, fresh and varied rather than the usual 'side salad' of an uninspiring tiny portion of lettuce. The food, speed of it and friendly chatty service - without feeling at all rushed - ensure we will return ro this little gem.

I used to live in Holcot, so I have visited the White Swan on many occasions. I've seen it when the food was pretty good, and I've seen it when the food has been dire. My husband and I met in the Swan, and as we'd been invited down for a drink, we decided to get some food too. We found a table, and were seen very quickly to with menus and drinks. I had the breaded goats cheese on red onion chutney, served with green leaves, which was absolutely delicious. For main, I went back to my old staple at this pub, lasagne. It was very good, better than how I've ever had it in there before (and that is a big compliment!). Good hearty portions too. My husband had one of the specials, calves liver, and judging by how quickly he cleared his plate, he was suitably impressed. Our bill was very reasonable for the 2 courses, and several glasses of wine, and we left feeling very full! We've since been back with my In-Laws, who were also very impressed with the quality of the food. Presentaion and service have been excellent on both occasions. Ok, the decor is a bit of a let down, but this is still a quaint country pub, which is struggling to survive in a tiny village. I actually cannot wait to go back and try Lee's new menu, because I'm pretty sure it'll be even better than the current one.

Visited first time since August 2014 and suprised to be greeted by one of the friendly new owners. The menu gave a good cross section of food for all tastes and was also very reasonably priced. The food was excellent and presented very professionally. This is definately on our "must go again" list.Well done Jo and Lee. .

We visited the White Swan today for lunch, the quality of which was excellent. Ample portions of meat were served with a wide variety of well cooked vegetables and superb Yorkshire pudding. The dessert menu was varied and pleasingly different. Would recommend.

Second visit and will return. The standard of food in this typical English village pub belied its basic setting and decor. Inexpensive and well presented the food was excellent. The venue is one of the few local village pubs left with all the typical characters and their families, farmers, business people, gamekeepers even a ballerina. The history of the pub is interesting if a bit masked in secrecy as this was once where all the local bare knuckle boxing matches took place. Happily the barn where this went on is now just a store room. Families are welcome, even if they accidently set fire to the menu. Sorry!

Proper English pub! Great beer, great atmosphere and fantastic staff. Really welcoming and friendly with plenty of TVs for all the major sporting action, a pool table, skittles table and darts board. Always something going on and regular live music.

Sadly this was a big disappointment, the restaurant reminded me of an elderly home with so many older folk, the food at best was average, also items such as Tarter sauce which you would expect to be part of the fish and chips meal is an extra, really? Also the desserts are really pricey, not somewhere I would recommend
