First class everytime. Been coming to the White Swan over the past 2 years while I am in the UK on business. The hospitality shown by John and Di is first class. The food is always exceptional whether having a sandwich for lunch or a 3 course meal in the evening. I often stay over in the new rooms that have been built at the back of the pub, clean, comfortable and homely. Really is a perfect country pub.

Lovely cosy country pub. The best pub grub we have ever had. The pie was exceptional, so tasty and filled to the brim with meat, the scotch egg starter was equally as delicious. Homemade perfection!! Thank you

Excellent food and service. Campervan and dog friendly. Quiet location with a great pub atmosphere. We had a wonderful evening sitting in the snug with the dog. They had a good selection of cask conditioned beers and a decent variety of gins. Will visit again.

Lovely little pub in the country, we ordered - Oven baked rosemary and thyme camembert – topped with a bacon crumb served with warm bread as a main with a side of Garlic parmesan roasted carrots. What I received was - Oven baked Camembert warm bread as the main and a side of carrots with a sprinkle of Parmesan on top. There was no rosemary or thyme, no garlic or no bacon as noted in the menu. This was put to a different chef, I did ask for some chutney to help it over but received some sort of apple and cinnamon compote and a side dish of cold out the fridge bacon crumbs. Not what we were expecting from a place that has had so many good reviews online. We also got the Skippers Catch Crispy golden battered fish and hand cut chips – served with chunky tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. What was received was a light soggy battered fish with homemade single cook soggy chips. Defiantly not worth the £18 I paid for it. Over all, a disappointing meal for the cost and being honest would not go back. Pity as a lovely pub in a beautiful area.

The White Swan in Wighill is our go-to pub, but today was our first time sampling their culinary delights. We nestled into the snug with our dog, racing against the clock with dinner at 12:15 and the F1 starting at 2 PM. Our culinary adventure included cauliflower soup, pâté, pork belly, and roast beef. Spoiler alert: everything was top-notch! The soup was a personal favorite—absolutely delightful. The food was not just tasty, it was a flavor fiesta. The staff? Simply fantastic. And the landlord? A comedic genius. The pub itself is the epitome of coziness, and while they offer accommodation, we haven’t explored that yet. After devouring our meals and downing a few beers, we made it home just in time for Martin’s grid walk in Monza. Cheers to perfect timing and even better food!

I visited with a large group for a baby shower and everything was brilliant. The staff had put us in a side room so we had that to ourselves and were happy for us to decorate and stay as long as we wanted. Being a large group we ordered our meals in advance and everything came out perfectly. I had the veggie moussaka which was gorgeous. The staff were all brilliant and even brought one of the girls something from the shop! we paid for our drinks separately so it was easy to sort the bill at the end. Owners were chatty and really helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely pub. Nice decor and a great welcome for us as a family. The food was incredible. Was able to try the King prawns and chorizo starter as well as the beef sandwich and bacon cheeseburger - all were incredible. May have also tried a few kids dishes. Haha. One of the best burgers I've had. The chips with all the dishes are fantastic. They are usually an afterthought but we felt guilty leaving any on the plate because they were so good! Finished off with a cheeseboard and port. Local cheeses. Loads of variety. Can't recommend highly enough if you're in the area.

My wife and I picked the White Swan for a stopover with our Motor Home from the list of pubs on "Britstops", and an excellent choice it was. The landlady, Di, greeted us and made us feel like we were family, nothing was too much trouble. Because we had our dog with us we dined in the "Snug" from a pub menu that offered a reasonable choice of food. I tried the Steak and Ale Pie whilst my wife had the Fish and chips, both were excellent choices, well presented, hot and tasty. Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream followed, another good choice. Personally, I also liked the choice of ales available. We would go again and recommend it to other travellers.

We have never stayed anywhere where we have felt as welcome and at home. From arrival John & Di couldn’t do enough for us. We stayed for the weekend for local family wedding and even on the morning of the wedding Di offered to iron my shirt when I asked to borrow the ironing board. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights and other family members stayed for one night. We stayed in the rooms off the courtyard. The rooms were immaculate, had everything we needed and we slept really well both nights with no external noise. We ate in the restaurant during our stay and even the food is of the highest standard with a great menu to accompany. We look forward to our return visit!!!

Great beer garden we decided to go into the snug with our two dogs as it was a bit chilly outside and we wanted to eat. Easter menu limited in choice we ordered the roast at £18.99 each. Dinner came and husband had Lamb and I had beef. Lamb was so tough my husbands gums bled with the chewing. My beef was pink and bleeding which I could not eat so a young man came I I asked if I could have my beef well cooked as we both were not asked how we like our meat cooked! yet the woman with the gob said it’s says pink on menue ( piece of paper) you you honestly think if we saw this ‘pink’ we would pay £18.99 for pink meat? NO we would not. Did not seem a problem at the time but it became apparent it was a problem when the ignorant ill mannered woman ( who ran the place) fetch my meal back barely anything on my plate !! Her sarcastic comment was the beef will be tough! I asked where was my plate that was taken back? it had the right amount of cauliflower flower cheese, 4 roast pots ( very small) she replied in the bin! SHE fetched back a very small dish of cauliflower cheese and asparagus tails ( chopped) with green beans . The greens I do not like. So you could imagine the child’s portion I had!! The beef was ok what I left ( half) left would not give my would not give my dogs or the chewed up Lamb that was not edible . After we finished we were starving and disgusted at the service apart from one girl who was lovely. The woman who was rude, abrupt obviously no people skills dealing with a dissapointed customer as I was ready to confront her attitude and rudeness I do not backdown to people like her at all but I could hear in the pub somewhere her loud mouth . We went home to eat a good edible meal at fraction of a price. I did not take pictures but I wish I had it was poor. One carrot, three roast potatoes and one slice of beetroot Just be aware it’s overpriced not value for money at all . Best pub to we went to around this area was The Tickle Trout Inn amazing food absolutely value for money and wonderful people The woman with the attitude you may reply to disagree with my review but you know dam well your attitude stinks . We are staying in accommodation around this area and will put on our review to stay away from this place . Oh the toilet had no toilet roll I asked a young man who just ignored me again great service. My husband said the gents toilet were awful. You may charge top prices thinking your giving too food which was shocking but you certainly need to review what you are doing especially your attitude. We like fine dining this has to be yet the worse food, portion size and price a joke

Lovely location, great atmosphere with quality & friendly service but food was disappointingly average. Genuinely felt the cost was not reflected in the food, at a comparable price to the Lime Tree & Tickled Trout for Sunday Lunch the quality was much lower. Maybes an off day in the kitchen or change of chef? Images on TA of the food didn’t reflect what we were served - £18/19 for a few anaemic potatoes (no mash) handful of veg and 2 slices of beef (not the best….) we skipped pudding as didn’t want the risk. It’s was very busy so assume an off day?

I came in this evening just me and my 9 month old son to have some food they had closed the kitchen if I'd of done a little research I'd of known, we just got in the car and drove. Upon entering we was greeted with such warmth told us kitchen was closed but could see what they could do for my son, I told them it was ok and not to worry we would have we a drink and be on our way my son was happily crawling round made a little mess with the crisps which i cleaned up, the staff went up and beyond to cater to us I packed our stuff up and left a nice tip for feeling so welcomed (it doesn't happen often with a baby).. for the customer service and the little mess left behind that I could get to. I was putting the pram in the car and the gentleman approached me with my tip giving me it back which I refused as they deserved the it, I went on to tell him its been so long since Iv ventured out and I felt so welcomed they deserved it, he left the tip on my seat he just wanted me to return and I can't wait to go back the outdoor space was great lots of seating plenty of parking even have guest rooms that surround the courtyard at the back of the building, inside has a cosy vibe just how I like it makes it feel even more homely I'm so looking forward to our return visit thank you for your hospitality

The food was served freshly made and quickly. And it was absolutely delicious. I had a hot beef sandwich with gravy and proper chips. We always visit the White Swan when we stay in Wighill and we always comment to friends how lovely it is when we do visit. This time we visited with friends and it was delight to visit as per our previous visits. We stopped for weekday lunch, each of us having sandwiches - a mixture of Posh Fish Finger, Garlic buttered Portobello mushroom & mature cheddar and Hot Beef, each one was a lovely as the next but we must say that the gravy from the Hot Beef sandwiches is superb. John And Di are lovely hosts as are the staff, always attentive, accommodating and nothing ever seems to be to much trouble.

Fantastic pub!!! We visited Wighill as a group of friends in May 23, as we were staying in the village we visited a couple of times for drink, lunch then Sunday lunch. John and Di and the usual patrons made us feel so welcome from the moment we stepped in the door. The food was amazing! I’d certainly recommend the Sunday lunch and hot beef sandwich (the gravy itself was 10/10) We also joined their Sunday night quiz, Coronation Special and had a brilliant night with lots of laughs. I’d definitely recommend popping in for a drink and some food. We hope to be back next year!

Of note I have had a response to an email to the owners acknowledging the points made by me, stating that ‘they will be addressed ‘ and brought to the attention of staff. The white Swan serves good quality food . On our visit , a Sunday lunch time, our roast rump of beef was not ‘served pink’ as per their description on the menu, although it was tender. I maintain that the vegetable portions served to us to accompany the roast dinners were small, and that we were not offered more. There seems to be some discrepancy on this point, as none of our party remember being offered more, but when checked our server said that she did? I would visit again, but at the higher price range, think that The White Swan needs to offer better service, food as described on their menu, and a warmer service, as at the moment not quite living up to ‘the best roast in town’ that they advertise

We attended The White Swan today in a group of 7 couples staying locally for a stag/hen party. They accommodated us in a room by ourselves and we were served quickly and efficiently with wonderful food by friendly and accommodating staff. Despite being in a large group the staff managed to get all the meals out to us together. The environment is cosy and welcoming with pleasant outside seating areas, weather permitting and separate accommodation units available if required. It is in a small, quiet village but well worth the journey from York, Tadcaster and surrounding areas. Would recommend booking at the weekend as it was very busy when we visited although it was Mother’s Day. The pub has a quiz usually on a Sunday night but because of the Mothers Day event it had been cancelled, we understood their reasoning and had no complaint however, one of the local ladies overheard and nipped home to fetch us a quiz sheet for us to take back to our digs to do ourselves. A lovely end to a brilliant weekend.

On arrival we walked into a fairly cold pub that smelt very strongly of soot. The menu was limited which is understandable, however when we ordered soup as a starter we were told that's not possible as we only serve soup with the sandwiches not as a starter !!! Slightly baffled we placed our order . The soup sandwich combo arrived and the prawn sandwich would have looked more at home on a supermarket shelf. To say the other dishes were ordinary isn't untrue either. Finally the bill , £2.05 for a child's cordial and flat lemonade drink is outrageous.

A Gastro pub is about great food, but that's not what we got!The Fish Pie was the worst of the four meals. One piece of white fish and one piece of salmon (yes, just one single piece of each fish) were the total contents of the Pie.. NO prawns, NO king prawn, NO other fish and NO creamy sauce. Two of the other dishes were just average but the "jus" was gravy!!The stuffed chicken was by far the only Gastro main we had, that lucky lady enjoyed her meal.

Whilst visiting the area on Saturday we drove through this sleepy village on our way home and chanced upon this delightful foodie pub, upon entering we asked if they could fit us in for a table for three and thankfully this was no problem at all. We were asked if we would like a drink in the bar or go straight to the table of which we opted for the latter , the menu itself was a pleasant mix of delicious sounding imaginative dishes and some pub classics and after long deliberation (as everything sounded so good ) we had decided. We all had three courses and all left clean plates admittedly after trying each other’s dishes. Service was attentive and all done with a friendly and knowledgeable manner nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend this if you are in the area.

First time visit to the White Swan today and given the hostile welcome we won't be returning. I had only booked a table last minute the day before and should have gone with my hunch that the landlady was quite rude on the phone. It was my son's birthday and upon arrival at 1.55 (table booked for 2 pm) I was greeted with 'your table was for 1.45', no smile, no warmth no professionalism whatsoever. I stated that I was definitely told 2 pm which was correct. The lady whom I presume to be the landlady then returned to her book and completely ignored us. We were shown to our table and then the landlady returned once more not very promptly to our table to take our order. Once again, very cold and unwelcoming. The food was standard, the fish pie not very tasty and a chicken roast that was very dry. The landlord had a welcoming smile and was very friendly which was the only redeeming feature of the place.

Sadly the pub was closed for the majority of our stay due to a refurbishment but we decided to visit on our last night. We were given a very warm Yorkshire welcome from the landlord and shown straight to our table. I can't comment on decoration or layout before the refurb but what we experienced was a clean, warm well presented village pub with lots of charming features . The food was excellent, the steak pie was the best I've had in a long time with pastry to die for. The rest of our party loved the food also and everything was very well presented and piping hot. The desserts were also of a very high standard and portion sizes of all the food were perfect. Well .... how do I begin?! Absolutely outstanding service, professionalism and attention to detail! The food was amazing - we had a three course meal with full Sunday lunch as main course - the beef was served pink, belly pork with crackling was out of this world and chicken so succulent! Due to the COVID-19 situation our guests were nervous however all commented afterwards on how controlled the environment was - we even had a little COVID induction that was delivered with assertiveness but such professionalism that it did not spoil the day. Even the little ones listened! The waiting staff were so professional and I would go so far as to say 5 star - well done! They all worked so hard to ensure table service for drinks was maintained and no one was sat with an empty glass! The cake was ‘the icing on the cake’ handmade flowers out of icing - fruit cake melted in your mouth! Well done to the chef - we have eaten in Michelin star restaurants and this beat them hands down without a doubt! Not only did the landlady and landlord provide us with a fantastic dining experience - their hospitality and communication skills kept everyone safe, regimented and ultimately happy and content! John and Di are by far the best hosts we have ever come across. Thankyou for making our wedding a day to remember and we will be back next year for them to host our party when times allow us to! X I am sure our guests that were privileged enough to attend due to the small numbers would second this! They cannot wait to return!

It’s great to see pubs and restaurants investing in set ups to deal with CoVid and I can even understand the rather grumpy welcome we were given as maybe you have no choice but to open even if you don’t feel safe doing so but then the food needs to back it up. £150 bill for two families of 4 is reasonable value but we never got asked about a second round of drinks and by the time we got to desserts we’d lost interest. Do not order the tomato fritters, they are singularly the worst £6.95 I’ve spent in my life and were soggy disasters on a plate. The Cajun chicken wrap had no Cajun so was just a roast chicken wrap and the ploughman’s was a very lazy attempt for £10 and included a mouldy grape for good measure.

We were just passing through the area heading for a day out in York and came across this lovely pub, rang the landlord who found us a space in the snug which was perfect!I generally don’t leave reviews as I cook a lot and find most places average This place is fantastic from the prawn starters to the roast beef and chicken dinners we had finished off with apple crumble and treacle tart and great service WOW! The best roast beef is the best I’ve ever had! We will be back on a regular basis it’s well worth a trip over from Huddersfield thank you

We traveled to the area for a weekend away and booked into the White swan for our first meal out post lockdown... what a great choice we made!!! The food was beautiful and the service brilliant and the owners the most wonderful people. We had our dinner here on a Friday evening but I’m told the Sunday roast is second to none... if we’re back in the area at any time we will 100% be back for another meal. Thanks for a great evening.

Pre-booked a takeawy Sunday lunch from here and it was excellent. The service was fantastic from the owner who was really friendly and our food was ready at the time ordered. It was very reasonably priced too.I had the roast chicken with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage and gravy that was amazing and was such a delight to experience in these testing times. My dessert was a lovely apple crumble and custard. There was also a good vegetarian main for my wife, with all desserts also being vegetarian.A true gem of a pub and it was great to see that it had adapted to offering a takeaway service whilst in lockdown, whilst offering high quality food.I strongly recommend that others visit here too.

My first review for the White Swan, in June 2018, was deleted by TA when the pub changed ownership. Good to go back today, service is first class, can recommend the Welsh rarebit, washed down with a pint of Timothy Taylor Boltmaker. Can’t wait to return.

We have been twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. Whilst my partner has enjoyed their food both times, sadly I have not. The menu reads well but sadly for me the cooking did not deliver. The pan seared duck breast with figs and 5 spice sounded delicious. However, the fat was not rendered down and it was very tough. It felt like it had been cooked in a water bath as pale and flabby - definitely not seared. The smoked haddock fish cake was heavy on mash potato and light on fish. The welsh rarebit was more like a yellow bechamel and lacked flavour. What they do well though is belly pork. The starter of roast belly pork and black pudding with sweet chilli jam and crispy crackling is lovely. The service is good and it's not expensive. Always a nice open fire and a pleasant atmosphere. But for me the cooking does not deliver what the menu promises.

Had a good night out restaurant busy but staff were attentive and the break between courses was just about right. The soup was Tomato and very good served with home made bread. The Beetroot and Goats Cheese starterwith pine nuts and leaves was devine. Main Courses were varied from the Beef, Duck in 5 Spices, Chicken Kiev to Fish and Chips all were good and the Duck was great just the right amount of 5 spice (not hot) all served with a good bottle of Chardonnay . Looking forward to going again soon. Well done Di and John you have a good selection of food and drinks , and the staff are a credit ro you.

Lovely little country pub. Very nice friendly staff. Typical good food Yorkshire pub. THE best baked Camembert I have ever had with their own home made bread and their own home made chutney My partner had the fish finger sandwich which was on o focaccia doorstep. The fish fingers were clearly also home made. Fab food. Well done. Keep it up.

We booked a table for 11 people for sunday lunch to celebrate our sons first birthday. From start to finish the service was excellent and the food even better. I had the belly pork and it's the best I've had . Lovely thick slices which melted in the mouth, accompanied by a generous portion of crackling! My wife and a few others had the beef and again it was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes were very generous. All accompanied by lovely Yorkshire's, roasties, red cabbage and cauliflower cheese. Delicious. Will definitely return. Highly recommended.

Booked for 5 people - we are 'foodies' and take eating out seriously! Atmosphere was lovely - welcoming and warm - locals at the bar drinking and amiable chat. Menu is comprehensive and covers everything. Specials board was small but inviting. Starters took a while to come (two had ordered baked camembert so does take a while) however - the food was well worth waiting for. Garlic mushrooms, hot beetroot and goats cheese salad and fishcake - delicious! Main courses again delicious - duck, thai chicken curry, steak pie, chicken and festive turkey. I was too full for a dessert, however the rest of the party had sticky toffee pudding, pavlova and cheese. Service was with a trainee (shadowed by experienced waitress) - very good and helpful

Ate here Saturday night and Sunday lunch as we were staying nearby. Friendly accommodating hosts, so cosy with a real fire to sit and enjoy drinks by. Both meals were tasty and finished Sunday roast off with a traditional jam roly poly and custard. Will definitely return here if we get to stay in Wighill again.

We came here for my parents wedding anniversary we were the room next to the garden with the doors open and it was a beautiful sunny day and the food and the atmosphere was delightful. The staff all very friendly. We came again for my uncles birthday as he had enjoyed my parents anniversary meal so much he wanted us to all come back. Which we did. We were in another room not so light but it was nice enough and we had it to ourselves. The landlady is nice although can be a bit abrupt with you and the landlord is a sweetie. The food is all really nice and the cauliflower cheese is delicious, desserts are nice but some need custard which they don’t do unfortunately. The creme brûlée was nice although the topping taste a bit burnt and chewy.

We only came here because the place we intended eating was not doing food tonight. How fortunate was that! I had problems deciding what to choose as the menu was very varied and so many things I could have chosen, I went for the duck with chicory and Dauphinoise potatoes and every mouthful was exquisite. My partner chose the steak and ale pie which was clearly homemade and full of what he said was the tenderest meat. It was accompanied by roasted vegetables which he said were a refreshing change from steamed veg. We were then tempted to have a dessert and his chocolate gateau was oozingly chocolaty while my ginger cheesecake was one of the best cheesecakes I have ever tasted. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and the whole atmosphere was cosy and relaxing. We will definitely be back! Thank you for a lovely evening.

My sister has been before. She said it would be a lovely place for the family for Sunday lunch. Exquisite country pub very tastefully decorated. Lunch was for 6 of us. We were in a lovely room newly decorated very tasteful the menu gave plenty of choice. I chose beef with all the trimmings some had a starter which looked lovely. The whole meal was perfect all home cooked. Plenty of gravy asked for more and it came in plenty. Desserts were lovely I had warm chocolate cake with orange sauce and fruit. Was really lovely service was fantastic. Manager couldn’t do enough. Lovely time.

Popped into this lovely little place on the way up to Whitby. Chose off the light bite menu as we had dinner planned. The portions were very generous and delicious. They have an extensive menu something to suit most tastes. If you can’t find something to eat here then you are extremely fussy. They cater for allergies, you tell them when ordering. Make sure you are hungry when you go! The staff were lovely.

After taking Dinner Out recently we took a Drive from our Lunch where we were searching for other places to pay a visit in the near future, when we came across the White Swan in the Village of Wighill. We decided to stop and have a Refreshing Drink, and duly parked to the rear side of the Premises. On Arrival we were given a very Warm and Friendly greeting by whom I can only assume were the Landlord. The place seems to also cater for Diners too going by the Signage inside. There was a few Locals inside taking Drinks and after a while the Place was starting to get Comfortably busy. The Landlord was quite Popular amongst the Locals, and so gave the Impression that this is a Nice place to spend an Evening. There is also a Large Beer Garden to the Side and Rear, which also looks to stage the Occasional Event, and going by the Advertisement Outside recently, there is an up and coming Event this July. My Other Half usually Drinks Rose Wine, yet on this Occasion she chose to have a Gin and Tonic and was spoilt for Choice by the Amount of Gins they had on Offer. Thanks very much for being so Friendly along with your Hospitality and I hope that we can return again soon.Well Worth a Visit.

I've known the White Swan for many years and eaten there often a number of times, mostly for snacks. At this lunch get-together our small family group ate from the full menu, and it was very good, with large portions. The ham hock and parsley terrine was excellent - the best I've ever had, and the tagliatelle main course was full of flavour - although I couldn't eat it all. Service was friendly and prompt. To start with we seemed to be the only diners, but some others came later on. A relaxed atmosphere and ample car parking added to the pleasant experience. If you want good, down to earth cooking, worth a visit, I'd say.

Called to make a reservation, but got an answer machine saying they must be too busy to answer the phone... so we called in on spec on a Friday night for a meal (as staying at a local'ish hotel), and the place was in darkness, so presumably closed for good?

Food was terrible and all drinks were flat. Felt uncomfortable to be in the company of a racist landlady, even checked her Facebook after and I saw various hate speech’s shared including both racism, religious hate. Would not be visiting here unless you are also as thick as she is. God only knows what’s said in the confidence of privacy if this is what’s shared publicly.
