The White Swan in Ryedale

Excellent meal - staying locally for husband’s 60th birthday so booked for lunch on our arrival. 5 adults and one baby, enjoyed by everyone lovely staff and excellent food excellent value for money. A big thank you from me for the vegetarian option best meal I’ve had in a long time proper vegetarian food no fake meat. Too many places now just offer a vegan option to cover both vegetarian and vegan usually meaning highly processed fake meat.

Came here for a Sunday dinner after a walk in the countryside and it was everything you could want from a pub. We had 3 courses and all were incredible and the staff were so lovely, accommodating and friendly. Would definitely return.

Visited the white swan twice in the last 3 weeks and took advantage of the winter taster menu which is very good value for money. Small mains which was fine for us. Food was tasty and well presented and service friendly, today they were much busier than last time but they still made everyone feel welcome and made time to chat. Would recommend and we will be returning for sure.

Me and my partner had the roast beef dinner and all the timings and it was worth the wait believe me it was absolutely on of the best Sunday dinners I've had. I had a glass of wine or 2 and I would recommend and would most definitely return. It was fantastic well worth 5 star 🌟 thank you 😊

Had a lovely meal with friends, the staff are so lovely and welcoming. The food was really good and fantastic portion sizes. A really lovely experience and would return. I can recommend the lamb, tender and the jus was very tasty.

We were recommended the white swan by a customer in la trattoria helmsley , we really didn't want to drive anywhere but were very glad we did. Cathrine the manageress welcomed us on arrival escorted us to our table. We went to the bar to order drinks and greeted by a busy barman with a great sense of humour, the theakstons best was spot on. Our choice of mains was easy as no one we saw online does lamb 4 lambs it was a great rissoto and a fish pie. The young girls were so busy and so friendly "would youblike sauces , any more drinks ", happy and busy. Luckily no starters were ordered as we wouldn't have room for the (yes shared) homemade brownie and sticky toffee pudding. We haven't the time to get back there but truly go. It was a lovely afternoon.

Staying in the village and walked to the White Swan with our dog. We were welcomed warmly and given a choice of tables. Lovely table with good space for our pooch. Good choices on the menu and we went for traditional roasts. Starters were very good and good sized portions, the caeser salad was delicious and big enough for a lunch! Lamb was very tender and pork was not dry at all. Nice selection of vegetables to share and extra gravy when requested. We were given samples of a coupe of reds (lovely touch) and chose a Portugese wine which was very nice. We couldn't squeeze in a dessert, but there was a good choice of traditional puds. Service was very good and we had a very relaxed and tasty experience. So good, we booked again for our last evening in Ampleforth.

Visited the White Swan twice for lunch during a weeks stay in nearby Coxwold. All the food was excellent and we particularly liked the choice of smaller portions, available for many dishes. Staff very friendly and orders efficiently taken and served. Nice touch was cold water presented at the table after seating, without asking and without staff waiting to see if you order mineral water. Very pleasing experience and a must visit if in the area. We didn't have an opportunity to have dinner, but would be confident of a nice result. The blackboard specials from the previous night looked tempting. Overall a menu where you're not struggling to find something, but could have any one of several options.

Had an excellent meal here whilst staying at the other pub, with rooms, in Ampleforth. (Separate review). Great communication between both pubs and superb service on what was a very busy evening. Excellent table close to the open patio doors was ideal to enjoy the view and be comfortable on a very warm evening. Our granddaughter enjoyed the children's steak and chips, whilst my husband, daughter and I all enjoyed the three different courses we chose all from that evening specials board. The home made bread is delicious as are the puddings!

We were directed to the ordinary bar, not the lounge bar as we just wanted drinks. What a contast-the lounge bar was really well furnished and set out and had a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The bar to which we were directed was scruffy and unwelcoming-dirty bench seating and where we sat there was a hole in the fabric. This was a special day for us and we will not be back

Came here today for Sunday lunch. All 3 courses were absolutely amazing. My daughter in law wanted the fish dish, but without any dairy, this was no problem to them at all. We were made to feel very welcome. I really like the fact that you are given a bottle of chilled water immediately without asking, really nice touch.

We popped in for a quick drink, and the land lady was so warm and welcoming. We had a lovely chat, and as we had a small celebration, went on to book a table for the next evening. We took our 2 dogs, and were treated to a really well cooked, enjoyable meal. The scampi tail stater was particularly good, with the lightest of batter, and the scampi cooked to perfection. We stayed very close to this pub, what a gem, we went in every day, it’s in a little village, half of me doesn’t want to tell you about it! Great food, the staff are engaging and genuine, great atmosphere, lovely garden, just wonderful

The service is excellent. Food choice and tastes very good. The range of proper ales good, and all done with a smile by the staff. Dogs also welcome and great views at the back.

Called in the morning to book for lunch and friendly member of staff Amy booked us in. It was raining and dull but a lovely fire in the bar area made it feel really cosy. The landlady was so friendly and couldn't do enough for us and our dog. Another MOS off duty came in for a drink too and was really chatty. Our food was brilliant, soup of the day for me and partner had prawns to start. Both well cooked and presented, great portions. Mains were steak and ale pie with chunky chips and peas plus pork medallions and black pudding with mash and mustard sauce. Both delicious too. Friends joined us later for sandwiches and fries which also went down well. I would highly recommend for food and drinks.and we'll certainly be back soon.

Had the good fortune to eat at the White swan pub in Ampleforth,we had the scampi,starter size,though it was larger than expected,and the fragrant vegetable Thai curry on basmatti rice. Both were of excellent quality.The service was friendly and quick.Martin was very welcoming and cheerful. Loved the log fire such a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Loved the place so much we cancelled reservations at another pub to go back to the swan the next night,had pan seared salmon on green beans which was fabulous and my mother had the warm cheese with ciabatta bread and red onion marmalade which again was spot on. If I’m in the area I know where to eat again. On top of all that the place is dog friendly.

First visit to The White Swan recently under new management with Michael and Sarah.Warm welcome on arrival and safely escorted to our cosy table by the double sided fire on a dreary Sunday lunchtime was heavenly. Prompt, attentive & efficient service by all staff.The whole of the foyer, bar and dining areas recently re-decorated makes for a lovely fresh and warm welcome and most importantly the food will not disappoint.A lovely choice of starters along with a good choice of Sunday Lunch "usuals" and vegetarian options. Attention to detail with intolerance requests, its so much easier for anyone with intolerances/allergies when you're not afraid to ask or it be a problem-so don't hesitate if your hesitant! Sarah will reassure you it's not an issue."Christmas" was in the air with all the decorations and tree, so I had to go with the Roast Turkey and Christmas pudding, however was half disappointed I hadn't gone with the beautifully presented Tiramasu the other half had! Stayed up at the Studford lodges so walked down in to the village to the pub and was really impressed. We didn’t eat but we went in for a drink and the service was really great. Inside is decorated beautifully and, when we return to the lodges next year, we’ll definitely be coming down for a meal. See you in 2021

Greeted by Shirley and shown to our table for six persons (family).The menu was varied and well presented. I selected moules and gammon steak. My wife had belly pork (starter) and scampi (mains). Daughter had moules and chicken. Son-in-lae had crispy pork and black pudding followed by gammon steak. Son & daughter-in-law had moules and hake.Food was well cooked with excellent presentation.The ambiance of the establishment really made the evening. Quite surprised and pleased by the number of waitresses serving the tables.Excellent value for money.All round I would thoroughly recommend this establishment when touring the North Yorkshire Moors.Thank you.

We have been twice to The White Swan recently during Covid, once having a meal and once simply for a drink outside. We were amazed at their Covid safety on both occasions being asked for track and trace details and the cleaning involved.We are happily and safely going to return this weekend on our visit North.All I can say, in this v v strange situation is- well done White Swan

As visitors to the village we haven’t dined here before but would return. Good, uncomplicated menu, cooked very well with plenty of fresh ingredients and generous portions. Very good service. We encountered none of the issues mentioned by “baker boy”. Staff wore masks, everything very clean, tables distanced, tracing details taken.

Visit here a few times a year but not during covid. Stopped for one drink! And that was enough, nobody followed the one way, people standing at the bar drinking and we weren’t even asked any details for track and trace and no table service in the bar??? So people up and down to the bar all the time, menu looked nothing impressive and either wear a mask or not guys, I know you don’t have too, but on the top of you head won’t help even if you have spent £7 on a online training COVID course... common sense is better! Table was sticky with drink when we sat down... sorry I’m off to the other pub

On holiday as family, 3 adults & staying in village for one week. We dined here probably four times in the week & once in the White Horse. Think that tells you what is better. The staff, all committed with PPE & cleaning & sanitising of tables, first class. All the staff were so friendly & helpful. Menu choice was wide & varied, with specials added daily. Quality was excellent & great value for money They were offering 15% discount off food prices for whole of September, an excellent gesture. Hopefully, we’ll be back in Yorkshire next year & this’ll be tops for a visit. Thank you, for looking after us safely.

The service was hit and miss and the Sunday lunch was disappointing. We had nice starters, trio of seafood and Parma ham salad. However the roast beef was chewy and the pork was tasteless. Very boring sides, new potatoes, boiled cabbage and boiled carrots. We were in a room on our own and we kept having to leave the room and find a waiter to request the menu, drinks, apple sauce. Would not return for Sunday Lunch.

Great food, great choice, reasonably priced, staff very friendly and great regard to PPE in all aspects. Would definitely recommend this place for a quick drink, long drink, quick snack and a long dinner!!

So happy we chose this place to eat at when we stayed in the area. The food was fantastic, including the children’s pizza which was actually better than a pizza we’d had from an Italian the night before! The staff were all polite, service was quick and the food was delicious. There were plenty of hand sanitisers available to use and the toilets were clean. I would definitely recommend you stop here if you’re in the area.

What to say about The White Swan. It’s everything we wanted and more. Grace, our server couldn’t have been anymore helpful. I really can’t speak highly enough of her. So Friendly and polite! Second to Grace, the food was incredible and efficient. The steak was the best I’ve had, the sauce was amazing, both the peppercorn and the blue cheese. The brownie was a bit rich for me but luckily I had the sticky toffee pudding which was perfect! Can’t recommend enough! We will definitely be coming back for more.

We called with family . Ordered the char grilled swan burger . Sounded lovely . Two burgers,topped with bacon,cheese and salad . Everything about the pub was great guidelines adhered to staff friendly and polite . But the burger came and looked and tasted very much like tinned burgers you get at the fair quickly seared with 3 grill lines tasted like hamburgers . Didnt taste chargrilled at all. Wobbly pink bacon and 1 slice of tomato and a lettuce leaf . Albeit quite tasty I dont think it was worth £14 . Fries were ok onion rings nice .

This pub is incredible. The service is perfect, the food is perfect, the drinks are perfect, the staff members manners are perfect and the level of customer care is perfect. They could not have done anymore more to protect us from Covid-19, we felt very very safe. The staff members even ask if we are okay with them taking the drinks off the tray to hand to us, they wear protective face masks and hand sanitiser is readily available. There is also a good distance between tables and a great one way system. My wife is gluten free and she ordered a gluten free main. A different staff member took our order for pudding and she knew my wife was gluten free and talked her through the options, that was very impressive communication between staff members and an extremely high level of customer care. We will be visiting this pub again and again. The pub is better than some Michelin star pubs and restaurants we have been to, this pub deserves one. We can clearly see why it was voted Yorkshire's favourite pub!!!

Very worth a visit. Really enjoyed our pie and fish and chips. Highlight was definitely the sticky toffee pudding and we don’t usually order puddings. Pleasant landlord and attentive staff.

Service needs reviewing - popped here for a dinner on way home from work. Food wasn’t too bad but we were left waiting continuously. Waiting at the door, we waited around 10 mins before we were asked if we wanted a drink which when it arrived was the wrong order. We had to ask for the menus and ask twice for our order to be taken. When the bill arrived we were given wrong bill and then when it arrived again it was still incorrect. Felt very let down on service, I appreciate there are extra tasks to be taken out in COVID times but I have been in other establishments that manage it without any detriment to the service.

Called in on the off chance at teatime & got a table outside. Had gammon which was delicious & could take advantage of the 50% offer. Bit of a mix up with the bill but staff were great & it was quickly sorted. Will definitely return!

Dropped in for a spontaneous Sunday lunch whilst visiting the area, having fond memories of this pub from our youth (20years ago). We were initially a little taken back by the off-hand reception we got because we hadn’t booked ... but after some deliberation we were told we could eat in the Public bar, which we were more than happy with and had expected to be doing anyway. The service and food from there on in was excellent, the locals in the bar were friendly and welcoming. So pleased we decided to drop in. Would have been a 5 star review had our initial impression/reception been more welcoming.

We booked here for dinner, it was a busy Saturday evening and although the food was ok the staff struggled to cope with a full restaurant and bar. This is a nice pub to visit but not at bury times.

Very interesting and wide menu. Plenty of choice for carnivores and vegetarians. Several seafood dishes from the new Seafood and Grill menu. Good quality desserts.

We braved Storm Dennis on Saturday night for a family birthday meal at the White Swan and boy was it worth it. Beautiful ambience, very friendly and welcoming staff and excellent food from start to finish. We will certainly be back.

We visited the White Swan whilst on a weekend break. We ate early, when the pub first opened. The pub was still setting up in the restaurant.I had the leek and feta tart to start off the specials board which was excellent. The main course was sea bass. Again superb.The restaurant has a nice ambiance.My only negative observation was that the service wasn’t top notch, perfunctory I’d say. When collecting an empty glass we weren’t offered refills and not asked, when plates were collected, whether everything was ok. Small points, but it demonstrates a lack of interest. Would I visit again, definitely.The price was very reasonable considering the quality of the food.

We had a fantastic night for my mum’s 70th birthday. The food was so good! The best Scampi I have had in a long time! And the burgers were huge. The lounge bar has such a nice relaxed atmosphere. Brilliant night thanks Simon and team.

We so wanted this place to be good, with a revised fish based menu - our favourite type of dining.However we were left fairly underwhelmed. I had the main course of mussels, which is quite expensive - around £14 I think. The mussels themselves were lovely....the sauce was nice too if perhaps a little on the seasoned side for my taste. The main problem however was the quantity. Most might expect a kilo pot for that, but it was more akin to a starter portion. No spoon was provided, nor a bowl for the shells so we had to use our chip bowls once we’d eaten them and couldn’t finish the sauce as a fork isn’t ideal. Had someone asked us if everything was ok (they didn’t) we might have been able to ask for what should have come as standard.For a seafood establishment trying to build a reputation it’s a poor start and shows a lack of thought and detail. I fear it therefore may have a rocky ride until it ups it’s game. Such a shame as we would go there all the time if was better.

We booked Sunday lunch at The White Swan because the web site said that they had gluten free Sunday roast which included gluten free Yorkshire puddings. We ordered and only when they brought the food did they say they didn’t have them. What a disappointment when my coeliac husband thought he was in for a real treat. The food we got was lovely and had it not been for the Yorkshire pudding we would have given a 5 star rating.

We visited last night with our friends from the Fairfax in Gilling (another wonderful place to eat!)A new menu has just been launched and we all agreed the meals were fantastic!We were served by a lovely lady Ness who ensured our evening ran smoothly. Her red wine knowledge was awesome! We can highly recommend the Romanian Red!Lots of delicious meals to tempt the taste buds and a great atmosphere.We will venture here again next time we're in Gilling!

Lovely country pub. Myself and my five children decided to give the White Swan a visit for my birthday. We were Given the best table in the house. Food was lovely, kids loved it too. Couldn't fault a thing. A lovely meal in a lovely restaurant.

Thank you looking after us so well this lunch time. We all enjoyed our excellent food and the service was prompt, professional and friendly. We ate in the bar area because we had our dog with us and it was lovely to eat by the open fire with all the old(er) men propping up the bar behind us providing a relaxed companionable atmosphere! Our three children (7, 10 and 13) had room to be themselves without feeling we had to keep them quiet which was lovely.

I came to the white swan last week with my family of five. We heard good reviews about the new menu, and we weren't disappointed. I had the vegetable curry and it was fantastic. The chocolate brownie was the best I've ever tasted! The staff were efficient and friendly. We will certainly be back again soon.

The New Seafood & Grill Menu is refreshing change from the normal and traditional Pub food menus that are widely available in a lot of the Hostelries in the area. With a wide choice of Seafood and Grilled Meats there is something for every pallet,

We were staying at a nearby lodge and the White Swan had been recommended to us. We turned up without a reservation and were slightly early as food wasn’t being served for another 20 minutes or so. This was no bother so we got a drink from the bar and found somewhere to sit. A very friendly waitress came by and left us a couple of menus to peruse while we waited for service to open. Bang on 6 o’clock the same happy waitress came by to take to our order and that of another nearby table who’d also arrived early.

We walked from Helmsley and did a circuit back via Riveaux bridge about 16 miles. The White Swan fitted in perfectly for lunch as it is about halfway. We both had game pie and chose chips over new potatoes to accompany. The pie was very good with a shortcrust top pastry- contents pigeon, partridge, pheasant, venison (didn’t really notice any venison so hope I remember the advertised content correctly). Also came with a large portion of nicely cooked veg. Weather was nice so we sat outside on the terrace. All in all a very satisfying break.

Four of us dined at the White Swan. The service was excellent at both the bar and the table. The menu was sufficiently varied to suit our tastes. The food was well prepared and presented, and of excellent quality. The desserts were also great, but the chocolate pudding was perhaps a little too rich given the quantity that arrived. Highly recommended.

Currently staying in this wonderful Yorkshire Village and have visited the White Swan on Friday and Sunday. The food, service, atmosphere all excellent. This pub is really welcoming to dogs too, can’t think of a better place to spend an evening.

Decent enough pub quality food. Limited menu, nothing that stood out from other pub restaurants in the area. However, there was a specials menu which was ok. Pleasant outdoor seating area.

Ate here whilst staying in the lovely village of Ampleforth. The staff are very friendly; children are well catered for; the Black Sheep beer is very well kept. The Sunday roast was delicious; my partners special of lemon sole looked really tasty. We straight away booked to come again. Recommended.

We recently stayed at the Golden Square Campsite and got a takeaway from the White Swan. Food was lovely and would definitely use the takeaway service again if we stayed in the area.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening start to finish,a friendly welcome from lovely efficient staff and best of all a fabulous meal enjoyed by all 4 of us (the Scampi in batter superb)

I came to lunch with friends and whilst the restaurant was quiet, it was very welcoming and I very much enjoyed both the food and service

I had the absolute pleasure of dining at this lovely village restaurant last night and words fail me, the staff are so friendly and helpful, the food is amazing. I ordered the scampi which was incredible i thoroughly recommend this delightful venue for every occasion the ambience is warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble for the staff . Thankyou Simon for a wonderful evening i cant wait to dine with yourselves again.

Cannot speak highly enough. Had an impromptu visit with our two boys and staff very friendly and welcoming, lovely cosy surroundings and atmosphere and absolutely excellent food and good value for money 😊👍😊👍

We were on holiday for four days on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and ate at this pub twice. The food is lovely, good value for money. Great atmosphere and helpful friendly staff. What more can you ask?

We whent to this pub for an evening meal using our discount voucher from the campsite we were staying at 3 miles away. Voted the best pub in North Yorkshire, we soon found out why. Staff very smart and helpfull, fantastic eating/dinning room, we could have used the beer garden but rain stopped us. A good selection on the menu for all tastes, and plenty of grog to chose from.I highly recomended this pub and we will be returning.

Had a meal to celebrate my birthday this week with family. Chose it as a central meeting point. The food I had was great pub food, the duck looked amazing too. Was just a little disappointed with the staffing. Plenty on duty but had to ask for drinks. ( Twice ). Thought they would have come round and asked if we wanted more.

Visiting from Canada and stopped by while visiting Ampleforth Abbey.Indoor or outdoor dining.Lovely pub. Friendly service, We had the traditional Yorkshire beef dinner.Generous portions and very reasonable prices.
