Not just a beautiful place to eat, but the food was top notch, as in cooed to perfection, presented well and served with a smile. Even the local clientele were very friendly and welcoming. We were greeted with a happy attitude, which settled us down for a great lunch. It was a Tuesday lunchtime, and just became busier throughout our stay, so booked early. I'm 71 and have to say it has been one of my best lunchtime experiences. It is also an historical place. Nice location by the river, room outside for dogs and even humans. Thank you to both of the staff in attendance.

Lovely spot by the river to sit outside (weather permitting). Met with friends for lunch complete with dogs. Staff friendly and good service as was the food. No complaints. Outside of the building could do with some TLC but it doesn't detract from the customer experience. We'd go there again so I think that says it all.

My dog was attacked. I have been here twice and the first time my dog was bitten by the stupid man who sits by the door with a big black dog. I went there again today with my mother and there he was again making no effort to control his dog - my mother was unable to enter the building with her dog and I had to pick mine up. I asked for his name but the management refused to give it. This man shoul be reported to the police. If you know this stupid man with big black dog please let me know

The pub manager hates people, we were constantly told off like school children. We booked a table for a special birthday and told we had to move from the table after 3 hours - even though we weren’t told this when booking. We were told off for sitting outside and inside when some of our party were smoking, a chair was pulled out when the table was too small and asked when we were leaving. The pub was full of aggressive signage of things not to do. Dont go here if you want a relaxing evening - Must say that it was a lovely location, pretty good food, lovely locals and the other staff were nice it is just a shame that he was awful to our party. We would not go back!

Lovely ale and bar staff. However, the manager would be better suited at a boot camp than a pub. Needs to pay more attention to his people skills and less to the laminated signs he has posted throughout the pub. From other reviews it sounds like he's running it into the ground. Tragic

The salt and pepper squid was the worst I have ever tasted, just out of a packet frozen lumps and my fried brie was crispy but the brie was almost non existent. My partners chicken burger was dry and so thin. This was the second visit this year. The first time was Sunday Lunch. The roast beef was overcooked and no mustard or horseradish was offered.Very loud with children and dogs .The second visit was even worse I had Curry which was OK but my husband had fish and chips which looked as if it was pre prepared frozen fish and over cooked. When my drink , a gin and tonic was served at the table the whole bottle of tonic had been poured into the glass and without lemon or lime. I explained that I wasn't happy with the drink as I had always been served with the tonic separately in order to pour your chosen amount.I asked for the drink to be replaced and served with the tonic separately.A man appeared with the replacement drink and proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and that he had been trained by Fever tree the correct way to make a gin and tonic.I have worked in hospitality myself for many years for family businessses and in world class hotels in GermanyHis attitude was aggressive and rude.I can only guess that he was the landlord as a staff member would have been reprimanded for such an attitude to customers .We complained that a crowd of young men were very rowdy throughout the meal and we asked staff if they could ask the group to tone it down a little nothing was doneAfter 10 years of eating at the White Lion we will not be back.

Fully agree with James, Beuf0rt, Steve and Ruth’s review! Terrible experience for the money spent. Ale was badly kept (but argued it was fine..), portions were abysmally small, and most of all the service was disgusting. I appreciate Covid is a difficult time for businesses, but please don’t shout at my partially sighted elderly father for not following your Covid “signs”. Also, as other reviewers state, please don’t add 10% to our bill for service; a) we are not in the United States, b) you really didn’t provide “service”.The pub is close to the river, but as the whole of the Ross river is a public park, you’re better off grabbing a “meal deal” and taking it to a nice area of the river instead - especially if you have children or elder family members. Fully and completely recommend The King’s Head, The Man of Ross and The Royal Hotel in Ross. We ate at all three of these last week and the food and service were brilliant in all (even when rather busy). The White Lion is regrettably a complete let-down in, what is, the beautiful area of Ross on Wye. A pity as when we visited 5 years ago, the previous management had made it a hidden gem!

A great location overlooking the river Wye. Had lunch here with friends. New management have made a good job of revamping the riverside garden but unfortunately it was downhill from there. Friendly service but inefficient and forgetful. Quality of food was below average and quite small portions. Watch out for the 10% service charge on your total bill which is not mentioned on the menu (is this legal? )and results in a feeling of being ‘ripped off’. As locals we may return for an occasional drink because of the location but would not eat here again.

Had lunch in the garden - fantastic location, where you can watch the river flow by and the swans and swifts. Staff were really nice and helpful and food was very tasty - it's clear they're making a real effort in a very difficult environment. One warning - if you're hungry, stay clear of the bites menu - I was expecting tapas style plates but the portion sizes were appalling for the price (3 for £12 or 5 for £17). Tasted lovely but no accompaniments (relish, salad) at all, just three of each choice (cod cakes about the size of large marble) in a little ramakin. That's the reason for the low mark - just a bit more would have pushed it to a five.

I visited the White Lion on Saturday with two friends, as we were visiting Ross on Wye for a little girls weekend away. Wow, what a start to our weekend it was. We were greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed us and said we could sit wherever we wanted with options of indoor or outdoor seating. It was quite sunny so we opted for outside, where we were greeted with the beautiful view in the photo. The restaurant has a large covered decking area so even when the sun went in we were nicely sheltered. It was so lovely and peaceful out there. Despite the fact that we were one of the only groups sat outside and it was quite busy inside, the staff were so attentive and so friendly, constantly checking if we were ok and if we needed anything. I think one of the unfortunate things with all the ‘COVID secure’ rules in restaurants at the moment is that a lot of places haven’t adapted too well from the usual ‘order at the bar’ to then having to provide table service (which is understandable), but the White Lion certainly isn’t one of them, they were really excellent and totally on the ball.It was lunch time when we visited, and two of us ordered the fish burger and one of us the chicken burger - and it was all absolutely delicious, we were so impressed. We’re gutted we don’t live nearby as we all agreed that if this was our local pub we’d be there all the time, however we would love to return to Ross on Wye and our visit to the White Lion is definitely one of the reasons why! Thank you for being part of our lovely weekend!

With vegetarian/vegan options thin in the ground I ordered a'Bad Boi'veggie burger. While shops and supermarkets vie to produce new and innovative (and of course highly lucrative) vegan lines, I'm still amazed that pubs still serve up stuff of the quality that I'd have expected to find around 1985. The burger was a thin layer of crumbly beans in breadcrumbs that looked like something that has fallen to the bottom of the freezer in Iceland 6 months ago, served in a white roll with a thin slice of lettuce and tomato, no relish and a couple of teaspoons of limp coleslaw. There was a small portion of fries, and that's it for £10.95. Staff, service, setting all good, but the food was pretty much as bad as it could possibly have been.

Being new to Ross-on-Wye we relied on trip advisor to find us somewhere to eat. Even though the weather wasn’t amazing, we knew that the kids would enjoy being near the river. We were taking our two sons (7, 2) for lunch so it can be hit and miss on finding a pub that properly caters for kids. Service was great and very friendly. We were there early and it had a few ‘locals’ in, but it didn’t feel like a ‘local pub, for local people’. Food came quickly but was great quality. We ordered the faggots, bacon and cheese burger, kids burger and kids fish and chips. Kids food can sometimes have no care when being served, but this came beautifully presented. We visited on new year eve with our dog for a meal as our hotel was not serving food, we were really pleased with our choice as the steak was fantastic, friendly landlady and waitress who spoilt our dog with plenty of treats and attention.

We have met here as a convenient meeting spot when our late mother and father were alive, as it is nearly half way between us - my brother lives in Wales. This year there was 9 of us and the food was outstanding. Started with mushrooms on toast with poached egg & a massive slab of pate - a wonderful start. Then we had a mix of steaks (perfectly cooked and seasoned) with delicious chips, homemade Lancashire hot pot, scampi, fish and chips, sausage and mash.. wonderful meal and we all left ‘full to busting’!!

Went to day for a meal as the usual place we go to was fully booked. The menu was basic and the child's menu could be improved alot. Not all kids want chips. The scampi was nice but nothing more than frozen scampi thrown in the fryer. The burger wasn't great at all and tasted strange. The chips though were nice. I did fancy the lamb hot pot but no way was I going to pay almost £16 for a pub lunch.

Popped into the White Lion at 6:45 on a Sunday and they had stopped cooking food, but recommended the Royal Hotel for something to eat. We had a drink and went back on the Monday, great view of the Wye, with the occasional fish jumping. Beers good, food good, just don't go after 7:00 on a Sunday for food.

Restaurant located by the River Wye. Very friendly people and good hearty meals. Pub noisier at the weekend - perhaps not the place for a romantic meal out, but clean and pleasant.

You probably need to book ahead to get a view of the river. The food is pretty good. I had the chicken liver pate and they did me a generous side salad on request. The onion marmalade was not the best, but the service was great and everyone was very friendly. My husband says his steak sandwich was ‘quite tasty’. The decor is nothing special but the view of the river is stunning if you can get one of the tables with a view of it. All in all a lovely pub.

We visited with our friends and had a lovely Sunday lunch. They offer a smaller roast meal, which was just perfect for smaller appetites. There was lots of fresh vegetables and the lamb was very tasty. We'll definitely be back. The staff are very friendly and helpful too.

We visited for light Saturday lunch. Sat outside under cover with a great view of the river and bridge leading into Ross. The food was really good and judging by what we could see that other people had ordered, it all looked equally as good. The burgers looked really looked nice. We will go back to try!

Long story short, the Beefeater at the Premier Inn we were staying had to close because of technical issues. We had planned to eat there on the evening of our stay. After a little research I found The White Lion and was on £5 in a taxi (Dazs Taxi) from the Premier Inn.I'd called in advance and booked a table for 6 adults and a 3 month old baby. On arrival, a table had been reserved for us in the bar area, which was fine with us but lady serving us said that we could use a smaller room and arrange the tables for us as the bar area was busy it might have been a bit quieter for my 3 month old Niece. We took the offer up and we were promptly seated and offered drinks within minutes. The menu was basic but all cooked to phenomenal standard. The fish and chips was exceptional and I had the veal that was on the specials board that was cooked to perfection. Starters and deserts were equally as good. There was a few minor hiccups with our order but everything was rectified promptly and professionally. The food was the best I've tasted in a pub for a long time and the staff couldn't do more for you. Prices were more than reasonable for food and drink. We all left well fed and watered and extremely impressed with the hospitality we received. On leaving, we found out that that The White Lion also serves breakfast. We didn't need to thInk twice in saying that we'd be back in the morning. Amazing food and hospitality at a reasonable price.

We visited here as a family having read online that this was a dog friendly pub. We has a lovely meal, huge portions and great value for money. The kangaroo steak was a real treat and the calamari was perfectly cooked; the kids' burgers were enough to feed a grown up! Our hound was welcome and allowed to sit with us, which was wonderful as so many places now say no to dogs. A fantastic find, and we will be returning soon.

We stayed here overnight and booked the restaurant for our evening meal. Lovely staff, in a lovely surrounding. It’s a shame it was dark so we couldn’t see the views. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts and we managed to enjoy all three. In the morning, the breakfast menu was plentiful and the sausage and bacon from a local butcher were very tasty.

England's Gate is a traditional British Pub and should be proud that it lives up such expectations. The food and the service was excellent. My wife had a steak which was very good. I had the steak and ale pie which was exceptional (especially for those who wish to have some comfort food occasionally . Pity more is not made of the 'pie of the day' as it was obviously hand crafted and had a very generous filling of tender and tasty steak. I was a little unsure of what I would get when ordering as the description and lead me to believe it might be 'brought in'. Top marks when it arrived and looked and tasted great. This (and perhaps other great items on the menu) should be heralded as a special dish (as it clearly was) . Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to go back and sample the food and atmosphere again. Super place, well above average food.
