The White Lion in Calderdale

Made a booking but needed to cancel due to medical reasons last minute. Billy the General manager was helpful and understanding of the situation. He could have charged a fee but completed the cancellation manually to make sure i got a full refund. Cant wait to book again

Booked for 10 of us for a 230pm table. Communication with the booking was great, very helpful and friendly. We arrived early so thought we could get a drink. Bar was rammed so we thought we would go outside to the riverside "beer garden"... it's the car park so we didn't bother. Our table was late but hardly surprising as another large group was on there only from 1230 enjoying their gathering (which they should be). Very apologetic staff and we sat at the table. The table was not set just given a pile of nicely presented cutlery and napkin to hand round. The tables were squished together & the experience felt very impersonal production line. Food was mediocre, old tainted oil used for "frickles" , cold veg with roast and sparse with the gravy. Magnificent Yorkshire pudding though!

Popped in for a drink, good selection of drinks, comfortable & welcoming, log fire, great music & atmosphere. Parking & rooms available.

Just arrived home from an amazing two night stay at the White Lion. The superior suite was comfort itself, lovely bathroom, seating area with large TV and very comfortable bed. The food served was excellent, you could tell the breakfast was cooked using top quality ingredients and enough to fuel you for the day. The Sunday evening carvery was delicious, but the Monday evening meal, because it was a special occasion was just exquisite, the staff went above and beyond to make the experience such a memorable one. I would like to thank all at the White Lion for looking after us and creating something we can look back on for many years to come.

Beautiful, cosy premises. Accommodation was very comfortable. The food both evening meal in the al a carte restaurant and breakfast were first class. I must give a special mention to the staff, who were very friendly and attentive. Special mention to Joe, who helped me out of a pickle, booking wise. Only minor negative is the small car park but we found a space nearby.

Nicely situated in the middle of town. The parking is a great advantage though very tight to access. The room itself had everything you would need for an overnight stay. Very comfortable bed. Unfortunately when we entered the room after housekeeping had been in on the 2nd day, though the bed had been made the bathroom had not been touched. Though on their website it advertises speedy WiFi this is not the case. No WiFi available in the rooms and only limited available in the bar area. The food was average, we ate there one night but not worth a 2nd visit. 8 chips on the plate of fish and chips is an embarrassment. The breakfast had a good choice, Unfortunately the mushrooms were like old leather and unedible. We love Hebden Bridge but would find another hotel next time we visit.

My husband and I have just returned from having two nights stay at this beautiful hotel with two friends. We were greeted by very helpful and friendly staff who quickly sorted us out. Our rooms were very nice and had everything you needed. We ate in the restaurant and the food was delicious. The breakfast menu had a very wide choice but we all decided on the traditional English breakfast (both men chose the White Lion one). This lasted us all day and was delicious and served on hot plates. The service was very brisk and the ladies were very friendly and attentive with lovely smiles. All in all a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all again.

We have just eaten tonight and it was absolutely diabolical! We have eaten there many time but….i had soup…less than half a bowel, two bits of cold bread and I had to ask for butter. My husband had the plaice…fondant potatoes and leeks, when it arrived (£22.00)….the plaice was the tiniest piece of rolled plaice…the fondant potatoes were none descriptive and the leeks you could not cut through! Value for money…..? Nobody came to check if the food was okay….The worst meal/experience we have had….

Honestly I've been here so many times and it's been brilliant, but I've been today with my partner and it was poor. The food that was given to us could have been made by ourselves at home which would have been better. The steak which was almost 20 quid was gristly, chewy and had an unpleasant texture. Not to mention the olives that were 5 quid and were mostly oil, nandos have better olives than this! The atmosphere was bleak and non existent with the faint echo's of music in the background. Previous menu was top tier, we didn't appreciate an a la carte menu as we go in with the expectation of hearty food, as it is a pub. I've had better meals at Wetherspoons for a fraction of the price. We were looking forward to this meal all day and were left solely disappointed, we won't be coming back until it's improved.

The food was delicious! We both had burgers and they were cooked and presented perfectly! The staff were very welcoming and the atmosphere was great! Will definitely be returning and would highly recommend!

The Best Steak Pie I have had for a long time. The meat just fell apart in my mouth. The staff was friendly and attentive and the decor of the pub was clean and very countryside like. Had an aspalls with my food and that had a brilliant crisp and sweet taste so I know the lines get cleaned every week. And after the food we got another pint and sat outside the beer garden that was nice and private and quiet and you can look out your window the river. Overall my experience here was definitely a 10/10. I would definitely recommend.

I stayed at the White Lion for a single night post a long trek with our customers. The staff on arrival were very helpful allowing me to park up even though check in wasn’t until later in the day. The entrance to said car park is somewhat tight so take your time but sufficient for most vehicles even including SUVs and Chelsea tractors. The access into the hotel was a little confusing. There are some nice rooms, a fantastic stone fireplace which would be superb on a cold winter evening. I’d say the only issue was a slight lack of atmosphere, without background music during the evening. Weirdly they did have some music at breakfast the following day. Rooms are nice a spacious,tastefully designed with high ceilings and lots of large sash windows affording plenty of light. Curtains were fitted with pulls that enabled easy close / opening. Bed was comfortable,TV with free-view package, a good hot beverage selection and sturdy full sized kettle all plus points. Yes you would expect all of the of a 4 star establishment however the addition of oat milk was a first for me, not that I take it but I know many do these days so full marks for TWL. Bathroom was also large complete with a large walk in shower and huge free standing bath. Bath sheets of good quality and plenty of nice complimentary soap products. I think I would have awarded 5 stars to the review had it not been for the extremely poor water pressure in the shower, which was not dissimilar to the flow of a watering can and I do like a strong powerful jet in the shower. There were also a couple of unsightly screw holes above the shower rail, which was a shame. Breakfast offering was excellent and only the fact I was still full from the night before prevented me from a full English! They also offered what was basically ‘double ‘ full english which was impressive as well as plenty of other options. Food was well cooked to order and served fresh, which I much prefer over a buffet style breakfast. I opted for a fairly conservative bacon on toast, which if I’m being picky came with toast that was drenched with butter AND the most frustrating part… they had left one slice whole and cut the other diagonally which is a huge faux pas in my book. On the positive side bacon was good quality and cooked crispy as requested, is there any other way to eat bacon? I washed this down with a nice pot of piping hot black coffee. I would recommend TWL and from the other establishments I did visit whilst in Hebden Bridge I’d say it was a notch above the others.

We were looking forward to something to eat, we have been before and the food was very good. However my wife and the kids burgers were not up to a very good standard. My steak was full of gristle. The staff did offer a discount for our bill.

Positives: location, cleanliness, Yorkshire pudding and veggie option. Areas for improvement: service ( we found it to be slow and indifferent) undercooked veg and clear black bits on the chips.

We stayed in the hotel/pub at a bank holiday weekend. We were very lucky to get the last space on the small car park. Parking in Hebden is a nightmare at weekends. The staff were very polite and welcoming. The room was very large. A double bed and a single. But it could easily accommodate a super king which would of been nice. The room was nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was amazing, huge bathtub, high pressure shower, lovely toiletries and fluffy towels. My one and only niggle was; it was very warm, wouldn't like to think how hot it could get mid summer. There's no air-conditioning. We manged to get one of the windows open as both seemed to be paint sealed. The other wouldn't budge. The breakfast was delicious, probably the best we've ever had in a hotel anywhere. We will absolutely stay here again. It was a perfect base, in the centre of this beautiful busy town, and great for walking and hiking.

Stayed over in the pub in the most lovely spacious room. I would have happily paid more for the room.amd exepecional breakfast. Nothing at all to complain about, the decor, cleanliness and quality of interiors and food made this the perfect place to stay .

Having eaten here within the last year I was happy to return for what I expected to be a hearty and warming meal after an 11 mile hike. On arrival the waitress tried to sit us at 2 different wholly inappropriate tables that would not have fit 4 people round eating. We were eventually given a suitable table. We all ordered pie which took a long time to arrive. When it did arrive I was truly shocked at the tiny portion size. The pie was tiny and there was a total of 6 chips on each of our plates! We had to order an extra portion of chips between us! I mentioned this to a waiter who brought over the manager who said the portion sizes had been reduced some time ago but the amount of ingredients was the same? The price is also the same! She refused to give us the extra chips free of charge even though I explained that if there had been more than 6 chops on the plate we wouldn't have needed to order them. I made this complaint very politely and reasonably but she was very arrogant in response. When I went to the bar to pay she held the card machine out, said here you go and looked away, no please or thank you. Appalling. Quality of food is good bit only eat here if you have the appetite of a tardigrade and don't value customer service

I ordered the lamb special dinner. Most expensive on the menu. I hod a 3" diameter, half inch thick lamb dish with a 2" x 1" x 1/2" sliced potato side for £21. It was quite nice but I had to stop at a chippy on the way home as I was hungry. I'm diabetic. The other 5 in my party had a sweet to fill them up. Whoopeydo. Bully for them. Nothing for me. No sweet for a diabetic. I complained quietly to the waitress and asked for my comments to be passed to the chef. I got a blank look. Would I return - no way.

Went to eat here tonight for the first time in ages and what a disaster. To start with when my main course arrived it was tiny. Cheese pie that was about two inches across and just six chips. I tried to pick up the jug of gravy but, it was so hot I could barely touch it. No handle and a slopping side. Tried with my napkin and the whole thing slipped out of my hand splattering me in very hot gravy. When I complained to what I am guessing is the manager she told me that she wasn't aware that the jug would be hot. What exactly does she know? Seeing that I was covered in gravy she started to mop up the table but, left me with a burnt hand and a huge mess all over my trousers. The best she could do was ask one of the other staff to get me a clean knife. Have these people had no HACCP training? If not, then why not? I won't be going here again.

The staff were really accommodating being that it was Sunday and we hadn’t booked. They managed to find us a table. The food was lovely and well presented and we all enjoyed everything we ate …. One thing I will say is TRY THE STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING !! Thank me later !

Visited on spec for an evening meal during a 2 night stay in Hebden Bridge. A lovely pub, open fire, no loud intrusive music, very comfy seating and a very relaxed atmosphere. Local beer on draught was very good as was the food. The Yorkshire Burger was particulary good.

Food was delicious, a little more than I am used to paying, but worth every penny. Lovely ambiance, staff very polite, not rushed.

Lovely pub with rooms in the heart of Hebden Bridge. We stayed in room 4 which was very spacious with large bathroom with stand alone bath. Staff friendly.

Food was delicious and great location. However the service was poor, no check backs or asking if we wanted further drinks or desserts. After waiting for 30mins since our table had been cleared, we eventually managed to get a waitress to bring us a dessert menu, to which we were told we only had 15mins left on our booking! Not welcoming or friendly attitude from any staff either unfortunately.

I had a great time at the white lion this weekend, good gin selection and I had the steak and ale pie which was yummy. Great atmosphere, will visit again.

The best pub in Hebden Bridge. Outstanding food. They have really stepped up their already great food recently with their most recent menu. I have been many times this winter and have left very happy each time. The new and improved Steak and Potato pie is bursting with filling and is the perfect portion size. Their Sunday roasts are delicious and not absolutely swimming in gravy like in other places, there is always the option to ask for extra gravy at no extra charge. Their Guinness is the best in Hebden and kept at the perfect temperature. I will be back again and again.

If you’re old enough to remember the unique texture of a frozen Birds Eye beef burger, brought back to life under the grill, and want to be reminded of what you’ve been missing, then make sure to order the “Double Yorkshire Rump Burger” and enjoy the pleasure of parting with £15! Then savor the memory. It was really bad. I was embarrassed to eat it. So we skipped the pudding and the extra pints. But we did leave a tip for the front of house staff because they were nice. Solidarity.

Over night stay in the accommodation Overall a clean and excellent place to stay. We arrived at the place as 3 sets of friends checked in and while sat at a table having a drink, a staff member came up and put a reserved board on our table for 4.30, which was 20 mins time. We had put quite a bit of money in drinks over the bar at this time and it was just quite rude. We had breakfast which was delicious, but when I returned to the room across the courtyard, it was rather off putting at all the kitchen male staff sat outside the kitchen door, having cigarettes. There were 3 or 4 of them..

Going down hill fast!! This pub/restaurant was, until recently, a reliable place to eat nice well prepared and portioned food, in good surroundings at the top end of reasonable prices. All of a sudden the food quality and portions has dipped way below the bar - e.g. a small watery fish and chips (6 chips!!) - whilst prices have increased. Staff seem to have been dragooned into trying to convince customers that this is about cutting down on waste, but the whole offer is so different to how things were, that something must have changed drastically behind the scenes. And it won’t survive long unless a reverse ferret is deployed: we certainly won’t be back to eat with things as they are - despite apologies by defensive staff and a discounted bill!!

Really good lunch here with my family. Very good service, everyone enjoyed their food. Nice atmosphere as well. Would book if you are going as it is popular.

Called today with great expectations of previous visits. Not living up to those in many ways. Menu change, steak and potato pie being one of those changes. We ordered the 3 cheese pies which were in essence quite good but a good deal smaller than our last visit and more expensive. We asked the manager about this and she said people were leaving food and creating waste, what a poor excuse. Why, you admit they're smaller but why dearer ? and the steak and potato, again smaller but dearer. Come on, this is just an excuse to raise prices. A pint of cider and a pint of bitter £10.50p added insult to disappointment. We have, in the past ,recommended the White Lion to family and taken friends to enjoy it, but we can't say that any more. You are only as good as your last meal and this experience explains your 139 rating on Tripadvisor. I will miss the great standards you once had.

Lovely Sunday lunch very busy but good and varied menu which was very tasty Main problem we had was only a tiny bit of gravy - we requested if we could have some more gravy which the waitress said yes but they are little bowls - how many do you want we said 3 for 7 of us They arrived and were small what they didn’t say was every little bowl cost £2:00 !! Terrible experience. We went for a family anniversary so there were quite a few of us, 16 in total. We pre ordered and were booked in for 2.30pm, we did arrive half an hour early and the staff were not happy even tho we said we would just have a drink & was willing to wait until 2.30 for our tables. They did manage to seat us early in the end. We waited quite a long time for food after our booked in time (even tho we pre ordered) When the food did arrive the lamb meat was barely there on not just one place but various plates, very fatty. We explained & showed the lamb to a female staff member who was very rude, stated lamb is fatty & we should have ordered other meat. I am aware lamb is fatty however the meat around the fat was no bigger than a 50p piece, to think it is acceptable to not only serve that amount of meat but to charge £16 for it is disgusting. The roast potatoes (all 2 of them) were very small. The male staff member also came over to intervene and he was also very rude. Defiantly not worth the cost of the Sunday lunch & some of the staff need a course in customer service.

Even as that most dreaded of things for those in hospitality -a six person lunchtime walk-in - we were made very welcome.Yes, we had to wait but a couple of drinks in a nearby pub sorted that out, and when our table was ready it was totally worth it.The fish and chips were sublime as were the pies.Excellent service too.

Great pies and chips, service at the bar was ludicrous with students who are more used to looking at iPhones. Patience required ! no eye contact and nobody supervising. Seems to have gone downhill since it was initially refurbished.
