Overall, we like the pub and the food is not fantastic but not bad either. My concern is that I have never really looked at the bills when I am in, however I did today after paying. How dare they charge me £5.21 service charge . This is a pub not some gourmet restaurant. £57.31 for lunch for 2 people / Pie of the day x 2 £31. 90 How... Portion of Chips £5.50.... Pinot Grigio 175ml £7.20 are you kidding Just lost us a s a customer , overpriced and we are undervalued.

The worst service experienced this year. Popped in for a coffee with my son while my wife attended a funeral and sat where we were told we would be seen shortly. Waited After twenty minutes we realised we were not going to be offered the coffee we had asked for. It’s a huge pub but treating customers with such disrespect will cut a business of any size.

We live locally and probably come to the white horse regularly maybe twice a month. The food is generally good, and the overall atmosphere and staff make a great night out. Whilst you cannot fault the staff and their efficiency, the Sunday roast today was just really blah. The roast potatoes had no trace of seasoned garlic and rosemary ( that was on the menu) and everything else was just not a treat. Really, that is what it was , in going out for a roast and at £19.75 it should be a bit of treat.

Unfortunately it took way too long for a breakfast. When it did come out the food was cold and for £14 I expected more than 1 egg and sausage. Very under whelming. They also forgot the toast which took another 5 mins. It was overrun and under staffed. Was unfortunate as it was a great spot but won’t be returning with what seems to be a more reasonable place round the corner

What a dreadful meal. I had what was described as oven baked ham with egg and chips. The eggs were swimming in oil and completely over cooked. When the plate was presented the ham could not be seen as it was covered in the oily eggs. The so called oven baked ham was actually supermarket style sweaty ham, the chef hadn’t even bothered to separate the slices. It might be advisable to put someone who actually knows how to cook in the kitchen, no respectable chef would ever allow the meal I was served to leave his/her kitchen.

We arrived, and ordered 2 breakfast's at approximately 10.15. About 10.35 our two coffee's were brought to our table. At 11.00 our two breakfasts were brought to our table,by which time we had finished the coffee's. My half mushroom was warm, dry and leatherey As was my bacon, whilst my small container of beans had a skin on it! I formed the impression that they had all been cooked some time before and kept warm. These breakfasts came without the orange juices that had been ordered some three quarters of an hour previously. When this was pointed out one orange juice was brought. A second request was needed for the second one! We were not asked if "everything was alright" as is usual. I wonder why? Or am I asking too much? What a shambles! There were obviously not enough staff ( although half the tables were vacant) or there was a serious breakdown in communication, (or both) I shall not be visiting for breakfast again! Nourish bowl turned out to be a bag of salad leaves, beetroot, tin of drained lentils and some weird hummus. Chips are nice, but for £5.50 you only get a few. One of the better pubs/restaurants in Steyning. We have been here before and I recommended it to my sister in law who is hard to please to say the least but even she was impressed. I, however, was a bit disappointed on several counts. First of all, when we first went to the bar my wife asked for a sparkling water and they said they didn't have any! What sort of pub doesn't have sparkling water!? Never mind; she settled for a cordial and was very happy. Secondly, when we sat down and ordered our meal, the first thing I asked for was off the menu. Don't keep it on the menu if you don't have it!!! And lastly, we ordered coffee at the end of the meal and then had to remind them that they hadn't brought my wife's. Having said all that, however, the service was generally very good and the waitresses and waiter very affable. The food was agreeable but I ordered the mussels and had to ask for a bowl of water to wash my fingers. In other restaurants I've been to, I've always had a finger bowl with mussels as a matter of course. Also, the bread that came with said mussels was just ordinary toasted bread. Call me fussy but I think mussels should always be accompanied by garlic bread or at least one should be offered the option. All in all, however, the food, service and atmosphere was very good and I would go back.

The prices are good and we had a sharing fish platter to start which was great for the four of us. All of our mains were good. I had the steak and red wine pie which was tasty and the greens on the plate were really fresh. We ended with deserts which were large portions. Overall again a lovely visit enhanced by the lovely decor.

We had lunch at the White Horse on Saturday - the food was terrible! I had the Smoked Veggie Combo. The grilled halloumi luckily comes with its own flavour, but none of the supposedly smoked veggies had any flavour at all and it was hard to imagine (although the staff insisted) that any of it had been anywhere near a smoker. The sweetcorn had been boiled to oblivion then briefly chucked on a grill. The beetroot tasted just like it would straight out of a jar. The cauliflower was brownish, limp and tasted of nothing. My partner had the smoked chicken - overcooked, dry and devoid of any flavour. Very disappointed and will not be returning.

Nice decor, pleasant hardworking, albeit inexperienced young workforce, food was a letdown. Synopsis from our table... Cauliflower wings- dry and bland. Ham hock terrine- not very nice. Mussels- overcooked, broth was OK, bread was burnt. Pie, chicken and bacon- tasted of nothing but tarragon, chips weren't good, little gravy. Ribs- way too smokey, maybe synthetic, slaw inedible. Cod- tarragon overload. Fish and chips- fish fried too long, almost burnt batter. Was not busy when we visited, and hardly a surprise really based on the food we recieved.

We have been using the white horse atleast once a month for the last 2 years since moving to Steyning and the food has always been of good quality and the service has been of what you would expect of a country pub using young staff giving them a chance to earn some money while the majority are probably at college ect building their lives. I was very disappointed tonight though when drink orders where repeatedly messed up at the bar and when my starter, the new Mussels in tomato sauce where hot in places and stone cold in others (I had a few then didn't want to complain as I've had alot of good meals at the white heart). But, two other members of our party had the seafood sharing platter which they was still eating and the waitress asked them if they had finished which the reply was no, to what she awnsered "well, to give you the heads up, your main is on the way" to which a couple of minutes later the main was being delivered by a young gentleman. I said to him "sorry, we haven't finished the starters yet" only to be told by this rude young gentleman that "you was told the main course was coming, I can stick it under the hot plate if you like but it will dry the food up" My partner panicked as she hates confrontation and said its fine we will take it now and gave them the sharing board her and my brother in law where enjoying with food still left on it. To add insult to injury, my steak I ordered well done was only cooked medium and I hate blood and the tiniest amount of sauce. Pictures to be attached. The food was really bad since the refurb and the service was dreadful and has really put us off going to a place we once loved.

My wife and I went for an early dinner at the pub, which was already heaving when we arrived at 17:30. There was a child’s birthday party going on in the lower section of the pub - at a guess it was a 7-year old’s party - and the pub cannot be held accountable for the racket and pandemonium which ensued. Modern parenting seems to consist of parents shouting at their offspring to stop pushing/fighting with/not sharing something with another child and then settling back to natter with other adults without dealing with whatever it was they were shouting at their child about. The steak we had was delicious, as was the dessert, and the Ghastly Ghoul bitter (4.2%) was an excellent pint. So was the third one. The staff are relentlessly cheerful and efficient, and overall the atmosphere was enjoyable - dogs barking, people laughing, no background music or TVs, even the shrieking kids sort of melted into the background eventually. It’s a nice social pub with an excellent menu and nice, pleasant bar staff.

This was very dubious. The place labels itself as a "smokehouse" and has a section on its menu titled "from the smoker" or something to that effect. We ordered something from this section and were served a plate of grey meat swimming in a rather red, rather sweet barbecue sauce. The meat itself wasn't particularly appetizing - all overcooked and it had absolutely not been in a smoker. There wasn't a whiff of smoke about it and it had definitely just been shoved in the oven for several hours and passed off as "barbecue". Weird and also somewhat misleading. Nice service though and passable beer.

Had high expectations due to word of mouth. Service was good and it's a comfortable and attractive venue. My major disappointment was that the two plant-based options for main course were both ultraprocessed meat substitutes. Once again vegans are an afterthought. It's not difficult to produce a good quality pulse and vegetable based meal. The dessert menu did have a decent vegan option.

Had not been to this pub for a while, even though it’s a five minute walk, so decided to book Sunday lunch in the restaurant. From the moment we arrived, the staff were very helpful and welcoming. We sat by the open doors so we could enjoy the sun. Had vegetable spring rolls, really crispy, and the vegetarian roast, both absolutely delicious as was the pork my partner ordered, and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this pub for great food, great service and lovely ambience

I and a friend, travelled far for dinner on 7th August. Pork Ribs under cooked and cold, apologies etc. reheated rendered inedable, we were both sick the next day. Nice waitress and chef "mortified" cheese board offered - staele offering - advdice unless you want to leave hungry and get sick, do not go there.

Good service, plenty of variety on the menu and a couple of really different dishes begging for a try. Well worth the money.

It has a chillax atmosphere early evening. Not bad value, in an expensive sort of way. Worth visiting

Another great visit to the White Horse. They fitted us in on what had evidently been a very busy service. That said, the service we received was as charming and efficient as always. 🙂 I had the pie, my wife had the roast. Great food - Chef Dale’s pies are excellent! - and good sized servings too. No need for dinner that night! Always a pleasure to eat here, much recommended. Thanks! See you again soon.

Different fiends and I came twice this month. Once in the restaurant and then for bar food. Service is always great at the bar and also very good on the restaurant. We all enjoyed the food.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.

I had an excellent night out tonight with the curly hair, long haired, and girl with bun bar tenders. They were friendly and was happy with any request although I was difficult and asked for special requests. They were smily and came over quickly while it was super busy. I understand that their pay probably isn’t the greatest but the service was amazing and showed a ton of passion and showed me a ton of passion to making my Friday the best possible. Will be returning.

Had a really lovely evening and meal. The lady serving us was extremely lovely, polite and funny as well as being super attentive. The food options were really interesting and unusual and so delicious. But beware the portions are big ! Great little pub and would definitely visit again !
