The White Horse Overstrand in North Norfolk

We dropped in on a Friday, with a view to having lunch. We had never been to The White Horse before, but had seen positive reviews. We were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and ordered our drinks. For those that imbibe, there appears to be a well stocked bar. We had a look at the menu and decided upon the chicken pie with vegetables and the crispy pork belly. We were advised that there would be a 30 minute wait, as all of the food is cooked freshly. There are three eating areas, if you ignore the gardens; the bar, the conservatory and a lovely looking restaurant. We retired to the conservatory to await our meals. Sure enough, 30 minutes later our meals arrived and looked really scrumptious. The pie was obviously freshly cooked…it’s obvious when pastry has been reheated in a microwave! My belly pork looked gorgeous. We tucked in and without a word of a lie, both meals really were delicious. Being a lunchtime and we had a walk back to Cromer awaiting, we didn’t partake in desserts…I doubt we could actually have eaten one anyway! We had a really positive experience, lovely food, good service and we will be back! We definitely recommend The White Horse.

Warm welcome by friendly staff. Ate in bar as this area dog friendly. We both had strip loin of beef, cooked pink just as I like it. The variety of vegetables was superb and again beautifully cooked. A bottle of Shiraz washed it down nicely. Great sticky toffee pudding and a lovely cheeseboard completed the meal. Would recommend.

My group of five had an excellent meal here on a Saturday night. All dishes were faultless and well above normal pub standards both as regards ingredients and technique. Beer and wine good too.

Managed to get a last-minute booking for Sunday lunch and were so impressed. We had our young puppy with us and appreciated that our table was tucked away in the garden room overlooking the play garden. We were surprised that there was no starter menu, but understood why when our mains arrived. Very generous portions with amazing vegetables and huge Yorkshire puddings. We managed to save room for the desserts which were also very good. Service throughout was very freindly and effieceint. Will return when in the area.

A very tasty Sunday lunch with plenty fresh veg. No room for dessert unfortunately but all the options looked tempting Service was very efficient from a young & friendly team

Very friendly staff, excellent food and a cosy comfortable room. I booked two nights here whilst visiting friends in Overstrand. The room was perfect - comfy bed, very clean and a great shower. The pub itself is centrally located, it has an excellent menu and the staff were friendly and attentive. The young barman George was particularly friendly and welcoming. I will definitely book here again next time I visit.

I stayed here for 4 nights never been before but will be back from check in 28/3/24 was great by a very nice young lady warm welcome taken to my room told me the WiFi password should I need it allso if you forget it’s in your room back of door or in the restaurant I booked for a evening meal wow it was amazing the chiefs do a fantastic job the staff care in there work and it shows too my room was nicely thought out high standards in the decor staff helpful friendly and polite at all times am so sorry guys and girls I didn’t get your names you all should a massive pat on the back you all do a fantastic job there isn’t any negative things I can say about this customer experience today have put 5 stars you deserve much higher 100/100 stars from me thank you so so much for a fantastic relaxed stay with you all you all should be so proud of amazing job you all do from house keepers bar staff chefs front of house guys and girls your the BEST big loves to you all love mr cheeky in Kent Glen Xx room6

We love the food at the White Horse and often go there on Saturday evenings and Sunday Lunch which is particularly delicious, so having been two weeks ago, we had booked again for Easter Sunday. When booking, my husband asked for table at 2.30pm-3pm-ish but was offered 3.30pm. It seemed a little late but he checked roasts would be available and was assured, as it was Easter Sunday, lunch was being extended to 4pm. We arrived and found the bar packed with football on the Tv and our table was smack bang in the centre of them. Not ideal, but we were looking forward to a lovely roast. We sat down but was completely ignored by staff. (Should’ve realised then that something was amiss.) As a member of staff passed our table, I asked if we could please have the menu. The menus were brought over and the waitress trotted off quickly before we could even ask to order drinks. Next, a young boy came over and said ‘really sorry but there are no roasts left’. We looked at each other in disbelief and explained that we’d booked for Sunday roast on Easter Sunday. He shrugged his shoulders and said, there are other things in the menu you can choose from, and walked off. When we looked at the menu, aside from the roasts, there was sea bream, chickpea stew, fish & chips or burger & chips. Nothing remotely appealing to us for Easter Sunday lunch. We were completely gobsmacked. My husband went outside and phoned around and got us a table elsewhere. He went over to the woman who usually runs the White Horse so efficiently and explained we were leaving as there’s nothing else on the menu we wanted to eat. She then said something about another menu to choose from. But by then, he’d booked something else (by that point roasts had finished everywhere) and after being treated like that, we didn’t feel like sticking around. I could understand if we’re were walk-ins but we’d made the reservation days in advance and checked roasts would be available. We could see roasts being served to the tables all around us. Our Easter Sunday was completely ruined as we ended up having a big argument, as I felt my husband should’ve booked a table earlier rather than later, and he said he couldn’t have been any more clear than he was when he’d booked that we were coming for roast lunch and he’d been assured they would be available. Plus my daughter who was with us, had to be at work at 6pm so after going elsewhere we were then in a rush. So disappointing and not even a proper apology.

Exceptional. Came for one night to visit the nearby Doggie Diner. We were allowed to check in early after a very long drive from Liverpool. We had tea on arrival and were welcomed by lovely staff and customers. Very dog friendly is a must for us. The room was spacious, very clean and had a lovely sunny feel to it. We booked a meal for the evening and wow the best sea bream I have had ever. The wine was lovely, waitress service second to none. Great little post office across the road if you forget anything. Beach is a few minutes away. Had the most perfect day. Lying here excited for breakfast. Thank you xxx

Immaculate inside and out. Beautifully decorated, very clean and organised. Had delicious BLT for lunch, freshest bread, quality bacon, tasty salad accompanying and generous fries as side. Staff all helpful and friendly.

Decided to try out the new menu and very glad we did. Lots of new dishes to try in both starters and mains. Fishcake and pork belly starters both delicious, I don't normally eat pork belly but absolutely loved this dish, beautiful balanced. We had the slow cooked saddle of lamb and the cajun chicken salad for mains, spoilt for choice as though not veggies I also really fancied the Moroccan tagine dish. So many lovely new dishes to try we booked in again for next Friday. Thank you Ben and the team and of course the front of house staff, who always make us feel so welcome.

Sadly disappointed. The pub looks great. I opted for the main vegetarian option but it was not available. So I had a choice of a halloumi burger or a salad. I opted for the salad with a potato fritter. What arrived was sweet potato and boiled potato made into a patty and fried with coleslaw and a salad. The salad consisted of 2 types of raw cabbage , onion, a few slices of red pepper and carrot, not a salad leaf in sight!!! So basically it was a plateful of raw cabbage! When we were asked how it was I did say I was disappointed and left most of it. No apology , nothing. Would I recommend ,sadly not. Felt very underwhelmed, disappointed and an after thought…..

We stayed here over the Christmas/New Year holidays, what amazing food, friendly staff and all round great place to stay. 5 minute walk to the beach….. what is not to love about this place?

I just wanted to give a ‘shout out’ to the staff at The White Horse in Overstrand for their friendly and swift service for our table of 8 with dogs on New Year’s Day. They were very busy and as with all such pubs had clearly been busy the night before, but they served our table with a friendly and efficient manner and our drinks, food and coffee arrived quickly.

Lovely dog friendly pub, great location near a beach, great base for exploring Norfolk. Relaxed atmosphere, great food, had a large family room with a bath and shower, very clean, no issues with parking, great service breakfast and dinner. Supplied toiletries and water which were replenished would recommend!

Booked a couple of nights stay to break up the Christmas and New Year period holiday. Had no idea of the area so didn't know what to expect but loved it - the accomodation, food and general service was 10/10. Very quiet (1 shop that closes at 5.30pm) but the pub was very friendly and felt like the hub of the village. Room was immaculate and extra points for the super powerful shower! Fully recommend a stay there.

Stayed overnight. Black marks across wall where they had pushed x2 single beds together. Cracks in tiles.on bathroom floor and noisy heating all night long. Full English came.out cold and the toast was cold. Did ask for some warm.toast but I think the bread was stale tasted that way.

. Food was absolutely amazing and plentiful. Normally a Christmas meal is predictable , bland and uninteresting . However not here. Everything was fresh and appetising. The turkey dinner was to die for . The assortment of veg was excellent, the Yorkshire pudding was huge. The staff were very helpful and attentive. I would recommend anyone to visit this gem and will definitely be taking husband for a meal there.

Very unhelpful staff member, they could with a customer relations class. Always seems like they have had a terrible day & making it known. A welcoming smile & friendly word would make such a difference!

Lovely family evening meal for 10 on a busy Saturday night. Excellent service and exceptional food. Vegetarian option was very well received. We will return and highly recommend The White Horse

We stayed for 3 nights, b & b, for a really good price. Whilst a bit on the small side, our room was warm, clean and tidy. Bottled water, biscuits, tea and coffee were topped up or replaced daily. Our cooked breakfasts were excellent as were our evening meals (halloumi burger and beef burger). All of the staff were friendly and efficient and really made our stay enjoyable. Overstrand is an excellent base to explore the northern part of Norfolk. Our highlight was a walk on the coast path to Cromer. Tip: if the tide is out, walk to Cromer on the beach as it's easier going.

Order our meal, I had Seabas with Samphire. Mash potato, topped with SAMPHIRE a VERY LARGE PORTION & a SMALL FILLET of Seabase. One of the worst meals I have every had.

We had a lovely meal here during our long weekend in Norfolk. It is a dog friendly restaurant and the food was lovely. I had the sea bass and my husband had the gnocchi and both dishes were very good. Staff were friendly too.

Having had 2 good lunchtime experiences I was looking forward to an evening meal. I ordered the hallumi burger and when it arrived I mistook it for an ordinary burger as it was so brown and overcooked. Unfortunately the hallumi was tasteless due to the outside being so overdone. I had to return it for an ordinary burger. When I cut into it it was complexly pink inside by this point my friend had eaten her meal so I ate the bun and fries. The burger was taken off the bill however the whole experience was disappointing and we won’t be returning

Best chicken wings ever. Service is ok. We were told we couldn’t get a table till 8pm so sat outside on the benches with some drinks, we could see there was plenty of empty tables so eventually just came in. Was odd! My family and I shared the three sharing boards available along with drinks and they were all lovely and generous portions!

Nice atmosphere, chicken with bacon and mozzarella goid flavours but chicken was dry and overcooked, pork nice with patatas bravoos. Two ladies next to our table, one ordered fish and chips which looked fab the other lady had ordered the vegan option it was very skimpy I heard her say it should have come with some mango the young waiter came back and said they had d ran out, I felt sorry for her as that is not good enough especially at £17!

Arrived for a family Lunch yesterday. Plates and food were tepid. Arrived for a 14:30 meal. The majority of the party wanted Roast. To be told that pork was off. Fair enough We have the choice of Beef and Chicken. Orders taken and to be told that only three Roast beef meals are now on the menu. I wouldn’t mind but earlier this week we were told that preordering was not required. The food arrived without cauliflower cheese accompaniment as described. When questioned the answer was conveyed sorry we’ve run out but will compensate with copious amounts of Yorkshire puddings,potatoes and more vegetables than a greengrocer’s display. Obviously the kitchen was clearing out the remnants of the day’s cooking. Very disappointed with the whole experience. Wont b returning in a hurry.

We called in for mid morning coffee and ended up booking a table for lunch as noticed they were dog friendly plus the menu looked good. After a walk around the sea front back for lunch and quickly shown to our table in the conservatory where it was nice and cool for our 2 small dog's. The portions are very generous and my husband had the sweet potato chilli curry which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the gammon steak, fat chips, 2 fried eggs and Boston baked beans which again was delicious. The Boston baked beans were the best I've ever had! Huge portion which I couldn't quite manage but my husband finished it off. Everything was presented very well and service excellent. We can highly recommend.

We stayed here for two nights in room 9 which was on the 2nd floor. The room was small but after all it was only to sleep in! The room was clean and airy and had a comfortable double bed. Tea / coffee making facilities and there was a wardrobe with a few coat hangers. There was a good shower and complimentary toiletries. The breakfast was ok but it would have been better if there had been some fruit available. We also had one dinner at the White Horse and the food was good. The thing that let them down was the service which was very slow. The first breakfast we had we had to wait 50 minutes from arriving to being served with the breakfast, the waitress didn’t keep us informed or apologised for the delay. The dinner service was also very slow having to wait 20 minutes to place our order then another 25 minutes before our food arrived but at least the two young waiters apologised for the delay when eventually our food arrived. So basically what I’m saying is the room was as expected, the food was good but the staff need some customer relations training. To cap it all when we went to pay the bill they had added a “discretionary”10% service charge on the whole total that is room, food and drink but unless you studied the bill you wouldn’t have realised!

We came for drinks, no food was ordered even though the food looked great! We spent nearly £20 on drinks, unfortunately a wasp landed in a family members drink and we were unable to get it out, we took it to the bar where as it was a shandy and hardly anything had been drank we would get it replaced. We were handed beer mats to put over our drinks to try and stop them falling into our drinks. Other tables were also trying to swat the wasps away from them. We got it replaced and had to pay again for half a shandy, that didn’t give us a good vibe so we finished our drinks and left.

We stayed the night for our anniversary and ate on site. What a meal! Ice breaker ale and a gorgeous Malborough Service was quick and friendly. Starter of terrine was perfect for two. Meals came out and wow! Steak and fat chips with an incredible mushroom sauce. Cromer crab with tonnes of salad plus more than enough fries. Clean plates and happy walk to the sea for sunset

Service was terrible. We were asked if we wanted any drinks before we had even sat down at the table. We waited for half an hour before they came and took our food order, we were the only ones in the restaurant! The waitresses weren’t really interested in serving and didn’t take any care when giving us our food and drink. The food then took an hour to come. But with all of that said the food was good.

Although this is basically a public house it has a hotel feel. Rooms are comfortable and clean with all the usual hotel facilities. Breakfasts are excellent and set you up for the day in the residents dining room. Parking is easy on adjacent roads.
