Cannot recommend The White Horse at Pulverbatch highly enough. Wonderful welcome and outstanding food in a lovely relaxing environment and also good value for money. We'll be back

Appears to be a computer'glitch' confusing pubs of the same name in Pulverbatch and Shrewsbury, resulting in poor review for the former when in fact it should have been latter. Despite me making a mistake due to above; and apparently booking a table at Shrewsbury when I wished it to be Pulverbatch, my wife and I arrived at the latter today 7/7/24. The 'landlady' confirmed the above computer 'glitch' but still made a table available to us. The atmosphere was good, staff were friendly and efficient, the carvery was very good, the cost was realistic. We will certainly use it again. Between approximately 2.15 & 3.15pm I did ring the Shrewsbury establishment on at least 10 occasions to apologise for our 'no show' but the 'phone wasn't answered

Walking distance from a local campsite. Warm welcome and good old fashioned setting. I did note it had a large restaurant out the back for large functions. Food was tasty and piping hot. Dog friendly. Friday night was dominos night, all hosted in an area off to the side. Equally popular the second night we returned. In fact we saw several people from the campsite that had taken us up on our recommendation and they were equally impressed. Wide range of local brews.

First meal for a while but so enjoyable. Vegetarian option on menu was not available but I was offered a veggie lasagne - one of the tastiest I’ve had. A really good red wine as well. My husband had a steak - perfectly cooked rare, a little chewy but very tasty. Another good meal.

Enjoyed quiet Saturday afternoon drinks in this lovely quaint village pub. Also enjoyed a delicious Sunday carvery of roast beef with all the trimmings. The landlord and landlady made us all feel so welcome and the staff were friendly. Would highly recommend visiting this pub which has great service and is full of character for a drink and food.

A warm friendly local pub. Great atmosphere, friendly welcome, good service. Second meal there since its re-opening and chose the same meal since it was so good first visit! It’s rare, in this country, that a steak ordered rare is actually a perfectly cooked rare steak! Also the accompaniments perfectly cooked and presented. .

We stayed at The White Horse for one night. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. We had an evening meal and breakfast which were both delicious. I had steak and turf, the steak was velvet, absolutely delightful. My husband had gammon which was just as nice. The breakfast was cooked perfectly. The bedroom although small was clean and comfortable.

Went for Sunday lunch on Mothers Day, staff were welcoming and friendly. Had the carvery, meat portions very generous and good choice of veg and trimmings. All cooked really well, the cauliflower cheese here is especially good. We were all too full for a dessert this time. Considering the amount and quality of the food, good value too.

We went for Sunday lunch yesterday - I had roast beef which was beautifully cooked and was so tender - my husband had the pork which was also great - my daughter had the nut roast which she said was very tasty and homemade. The vegetables came separately which included carrots, green beans, green cabbage, broccoli, leeks, spiced red cabbage and a huge bowl of cauliflower cheese. There were some many vegetables left so I brought them home and made bubble and squeak !!!! The quality of the food was outstanding and 1 course was £10.95 which was very reasonable for the quality and quantity I must mention the service was also excellent - they had a beer festival on and were very busy but they had plenty on staff working.. AND the roast potatoes were crunchy and lush

Popped in for an unplanned lunch and were suitably impressed. We both had burgers, one chicken one beef with chunky chips. We won’t need to eat again today! Very generous portions of quality locally supplied food and well kept ale. Perfect after a morning in the hills. Our dog was welcomed too. We always like a pub with doggy treats on the bar 😉

A group of us started our walk in Pulverbatch one sunny Sunday recently and after a dozen miles or so, were grateful for a great traditional country pub to whet our whistles. Looking at the large eating area to the rear, this must be a "destination" place for food, upon reading the chalk board and checking out the locally sourced products you can understand why, they serve some nice beers too! Note to self, this would be a great base for a weekend walking break, as they have rooms we discovered.

This is a lovely country pub, which is full of character. Three of us visited on a quiet Sunday evening. The service was fast and efficient. We shared a couple of starters, breaded mushrooms and whitebait. Both were very tasty and decent sized portions. For the main courses, we had surf and turf, gammon steak and lamb shank. The surf and turf and gammon steak both came with fantastic chunky homemade chips. All the food was excellent and the portions were very generous. Hence we were too full for a desert. We had a great evening and definately will return soon.

We visited for food on a Wednesday evening, we arrived early and were the only couple there for a while but the place soon filled up with diners. We were greeted by friendly staff and told we could sit anywhere to dine, we chose to sit by the open fire which was lovely. Food arrived and was beautifully presented and excellent portion sizes. It tasted as good as it looked, we were both so impressed with the quality of our meals. Cant wait to come back.

Had a long weekend here staying overnight with breakfast. We found the room basic but a comfortable bed, breakfast, "full English", was excellent! We ate our evening meal in the restaurant and were very happy with what we had, steak/ lamb shank, burger, beef and green bean chilli. The pub was rustic but with a very nice atmosphere, plenty of village locals, farmers and friendly dogs. The log fire was a superb treat after the sterile central heating of home. If you stay here please be prepared for the slightly "lived in" appearance of the place; it is a proper living village pub, complete with decent real ale and local characters. We will be back here in the summer!

We were guests of our Lyth Hill friends, so visited this pub for lunch in October. On arrival, a pint of Twisted Spire from Hobsons brewery went down beautifully. Then we had the ploughman's lunch that was staggeringly good! Two slabs of cheese, ham, pork pie, plenty bread & butter and salad trimmings. Fabulous and accompanied perfectly with a 2nd pint of Twisted Spire. All at very modest prices. It was a very satisfying and enjoyable lunch in a busy bar and we were taken care of by a cheerful and very busy young bar lady. Hope to be back around Christmas.

Attended a last minute family get together for a 21st Birthday party. Claire, the Manager could not have been more helpful in accommodating 21 of us and even arranging a cake! The dining room is large and can be split in two, hence we were in a private setting but still room that all the tables were in a square so everyone could see each other. We had not pre-ordered but ordered when we arrived and although there was quite a crowd of us, those that had 'starters' were soon eating. My son insists the vegetable soup was the best he has ever tasted. We were all very impressed with the quality and presentation of the food. A huge thank you to Claire and staff, we had a great evening and will be returning for the Sunday Carvery as we hear it is also very good. Highly Recommend!

We had a family get together for Sunday lunch, adults and children. On arrival ordered our drinks from a fine choice of Shropshire ales, we were seated and had a choice of food from the menu or carvery which we all chose, the meat was either Pork or Beef or both if that was your choice, roast potatoes, new potatoes and a range of vegetables and sauces, this was followed by a good choice of puddings which were enjoyed by everyone. Overall a nice atmosphere plenty of room in the dining area not too cramped with tables. Pleasant and courteous staff, would recommend worth a visit.

Visited this weekend (annual visit when holidaying in the area) Over the last 4 years the place has improved massively, serving quite excellent food and real ales so this visit was greatly anticipated as an integral part of the “Shropshire Weekend”What a let down. From the start something was clearly “wrong”. Despite the booking having been made well in advance, the Landlord asked us to hang on whilst he found a table ( despite there being a clearly empty table in the nicest part, which never seemed to actually have any occupants during the evening). We were offered a choice of three fairly dingy tables near the toilets, and chose the least worst even though it was quite small. After a considerable wait menus were brought. All the while the Landlord, seemingly on his own with a totally new member of staff, went about his business with a distracted air, and looking very stressed, despite the pub being the least busy we had ever seen. Attempts to engage him in conversation, when he eventually brought menus, failed totally. Food was eventually ordered and during the wait the Landlady appeared. She did, to be totally fair, come and ask if we were OK at that table or would like to move, but having got “settled” we declined, but at least she did offer. Quite why we didn’t originally get the “nice” table was never solved. Like the Landlord, she did not engage in any conversation, something they were both happy to do on previous visits. As to the food, the breads and olives, etc, were fine overall. The Lasagnes however, were not a patch on previous visits, tasteless and with minimal actual pasta, and the chunky chips were very dry and stodgy tasting. Whether this is due to the loss of last year’s fantastic chef, or it was the same person but having a bad night, I have no idea, but it was very disappointing to say the least.Overall, a massively underwhelming experience, luckily the rest of the mini-break in the county was great. Whatever is going on – and I am convinced something was – is unfortunate but in a service industry, and especially in a pub / restaurant environment, I think it quite reasonable that paying customers supporting a livelihood receive a bit of acknowledgement and interaction. Maybe not being “locals” didn’t help, maybe the owners are in “lost novelty” territory after a previously good job reviving a failing outlet. Either way, won’t be returning, which is a massive shame.

I was at the White Horse with Shropshire friends. The restaurant on a Thursday night was almost deserted. I chose the chicken with black pudding. The chicken was meaty and too much for me to eat. The black pudding as coated balls was not what I expected. One of my friends had battered fish which arrived and was very overcooked. This was replaced with a fresh and acceptable piece, and the course provided free of charge-a nice gesture. The pub is well positioned and the decore attractive. May be we just came on a bad night

An evening meal as a group of nine; four adults and five teenagers. The menu doesn't do full justice to the food, which was excellent. I had duck, which was cooked perfectly pink and served with a black pudding croquette and liquorice reduction (don't be put off by that - it was very subtle!). I also stole a couple of chips from my neighbour - crisp, fluffy and delicious. The lounge was full, so we ate in the restaurant; we were the only diners in there, so we had to make our own atmosphere a little, but we never felt that the staff had forgotten us. As we were leaving the landlord made a point of coming to talk to us, and we got chatting about his other job - training guide dogs. An excellent pint of Hobson's Twisted Spire too. I'd eat here again.

Worth what? The 45 minute drive out to deepest darkest Shropshire (a very pleasant drive I might add). Why? In short - a lovely venue, added to by the real log fire, run by very pleasant, welcoming and attentive staff (without being overbearing). Starter: hand-made Cod Goujons with home-made Tartare Sauce; these were not out of a packet. Mains: we both went for the Roast Beef Sunday Lunch; sumptuous and filling, so much so that my wife's plan to forego starters and hit the dessert option went seriously awry. This was a shame as the desserts we saw coming out of the kitchen looked devilishly delicious. If this was not enough, the beer was good as was the wine. We will be back - but next time with an eye on dessert!

My wife and I visited for Sunday Lunch ( 28th February 2016) and the visit started very well ; a cheery welcome and good beer. The restaurant area was very clean, tidy & welcoming. Before ordering I informed the waitress that I was allergic to cheese and she said that would not be a problem as the vegetables were served separately. The starters were excellent and couldn't be faulted - good food and good portions. When the main course was delivered however the roast potatoes were overcooked and we were served a double portion of cauliflower cheese - I reminded the waitress of my allergy and asked for an alternative without cheese - she then informed me that there wasn't an alternative as the vegetables were all sorted out early in the morning ? She apologised for the potatoes which we left uneaten. The sweets were fairly ordinary and microwaved but a good helping of custard. The bill was reasonable but on the whole this was a disappointing experience.

After several recommendations from people we're not quite familiar with yet we took all four of our parents and a sister, husband, dog and baby across country, braving a few fallen arbors and recent floods. A sort of fellowship of the ring if the ring was hunger and expectation. The place was quietish and the welcome from the landlord was warm and professional. Our table was roomy but intimate and enjoying some sun. The food was exquisite. I cook for a living and appreciate anyone else doing so for me but I could tell a skilled hand was at work. Great roasts, beautifully cooked fish and subtle little flavours throughout really brought smiles to our faces. What really silenced a usually gobby crowd though was a great dish of lightly nutmegged, browned and bubbling cauliflower cheese and another of slightly sticky, spiced braised red cabbage. The latter wound up in a doggy bag for my owd lady, which says something. Can't recommend this place enough and we'll be back to try the a la carte soon.

We were a party of six and for the first time ever, because of circumstances we decided to go out for Christmas Day lunch. We decided on The White Horse and they did us proud. We had pre-booked the menu which offered a wide choice that catered for everyone, even vegetarian. I personally had the scallops to start, venison en croute for main and Christmas pud for dessert. Everyone in the party were very pleased with their meal. In between the starters and main there was a apple sorbet and then after the dessert there was cheese and biscuits, coffee and petit fours. Crackers were also supplied on the tables. The staff were excellent in their service, and despite the number of people in the restaurant (60 I think), they were calm and very attentive. Nothing was rushed and it proved to be a most enjoyable afternoon for everyone. We would certainly do it again, saving all that hassle of preparation and cleaning up.

Was driving through Pulverbatch in need of lunch but not expecting anything interesting and pulled up at the White Horse. What a pleasant surprise! A great find! The new owners (2-3 yrs) have done a great job reviving this attractive building. The interior has a clean and new look but the period features retained. The service was very friendly and efficient and food excellent. The whitebait as a starter was perfectly cooked. The fish pie was equally good, very rich but full of fish and not loaded with potato as is so often the case. The rump of lamb was also excellent. No time for puddings but could have been tempted. Visit here every year during an annual stay in the immediate area. I would suggest that the venue is keener to be a "restaurant" than a "pub" ( If living in the area, I can't imagine dropping in "for a pint" only, it does not have that atmosphere ) but it certainly has succeeded in our eyes very well on that score. The breads and olives, etc, were clearly fresh and very tasty and the lasagne that we both had - an easy pub "staple" to make an utter, complacent, mess of, in our long experience - was quite excellent, hot and tasty and containing chunks of "proper" beef, clearly not just ordinary mince. The beer went down beautifully - we both had Shropshire Gold - and the owner was pleasant and cheery in our interactions. The only downside, and it is a totally minor one but in the bigger picture any dining experience should be based on all factors, was the waitress. A charming young lady, when asked to bring French Mustard, brought English instead and said "I'm not sure if this is correct". When cheerfully informed that it was not ( It really wasn't a big deal ) she just said "I'm not sure, then". It might have been expected that she might have asked someone more knowledgeable, but she just blushed, so we said it was fine. Overall, a very very good evening out in a lovely location (you have to be in the section near the bar, the other room is rather soul-less ) and a superb meal from clearly a very good chef. Will be back in 2016, just hoping the venue will still be there, it deserves to be.

Pulverbatch is a pleasant ride out into the Shropshire countryside, near to Long Mynd and Stiperstones. The White Horse is a traditional country inn serving food. It is older than it looks from the outside. There is a large car park at the back.We recently went for a four course fish meal. Barkworths of Shrewsbury provided the fish and helped with the preparation. All four courses were well prepared and nicely presented. The hot dishes were hot, and the food came at the right rate. Cooking fish for a large group is difficult, and it can easily be overcooked, but ours was perfect. There were several groups, who were obviously enjoying themselves. There is a choice of good wines by the glass and bottle. I was curious to see what they would serve for desert - we had seaweed panacotta with marinated strawberries, which was good.We enjoyed ourself so much that we went back for another meal. Steve and Vicky proved to be excellent hosts. The menu has a good variety of dishes. The ingredients are locally sourced (the lamb is so local that it was grown by Steve in the field behind the Inn), and the standard of preparation and cooking is good.We would recommend a visit. There is some outside seating for lunches. If you feel like a stroll after your meal, the Knapp (the old castle hill) is a couple of hundred yards up the lane, and there are lovely views across to Caradoc and The Wrekin

The White Horse Pulverbatch recently teamed up with Barkworths the well known Shrewsbury fishmongers to present a four- course meal of different fish dishes, complemented by a good selection of wines supplied by Tanners . The evening was booked up so soon as it was advertised so we felt fortunate to secure a table . By restricting the places to 30 diners the owners and staff comfortably managed the evening . The two chefs (one of whom was the proprietor of Barkworths ) also obviously enjoyed themselves and that added to a great atmosphere . We certainly look forward to a repeat .

On a recent sunny evening we stopped at The White Horse Inn Puverbatch to eat,our meal was very disappointing. I chose fresh battered fish with triple cooked chips and pea puree. The batter was dark brown, obviously cooked at too high temperature, on cutting the fish a lot of water came out and swamped my plate and made all my food soggy. My husband had a just passable steak and overcooked burnt chips. The guy that served us was unhelpful .We will certainly not be returning.

With the arrival of the "better weather", we took ourselves up on to the Longmynds/Stiperstones. We decided that we would look for somewhere for Sunday lunch. My wife says that she makes the best Sunday lunch, a fact I find hard to argue with. However we were both more than impressed by the meal set before us, and at a fantastic price. The meal itself was excellent, the pub is obviously very well visited, and quite rightly so.The landlady was informative and very friendly, and looked after her new (but obviously very capable) member of staff, whilst seeming to be everywhere at the same time.We had a very relaxed and enjoyable Sunday lunch, and expect to find ourselves there again soon.

We stopped off here today due to being in the area whilst very hungry, and finding that this was the only place to get food. Not being from the area we had never heard of this place, nor knew of it's reputation- if there was one! Safe the say, we made a good choice! I was very pleased that when ordering drinks there was a choice of Pepsi or Coke, as a coke fan this was fabulous, as often Pepsi is the only option (it's the little things that make a big difference). We both had the fish and chips which was delicious, fish was fresh and chips were nice and crispy, it also arrived very quickly. It was lovely to see that all the food is sourced locally, and found the board with all the suppliers and locations on a nice touch, I'm a strong believer in shopping local and supporting small businesses. If we are in the area again we will almost certainly return to this lovely country pub!

The White Horse is in a most lovely local. They offer good, warm friendly accommodation and the food is really exceptional for a pub/restaurant. The welcome is warm, as is the ambiance. There is a log fire in the evenings when the weather is cold and there is a lovely terrace for when the weather is warm. The food is good, the beer is great and there is a wide range of spirits and soft drinks. Highly recommended.

I have visited this pub on a number of occasions and am always impressed. From the first night I stumbled on this pub with my friend we were made to feel welcome by one of the owners, Steve and it soon became our 'local'. I have eaten here regularly and the food had always been very good. It's got a nice pub feel with the real fire and welcoming hosts and a good range of drinks on offer. It's also nice to find a pub that does evening events too. I attended pub quizzes, a bingo night, a wine tasting evening and also a tapas night. All of which were fab.Well worth a visit. Charming place and a real gem, and wish there were more pubs like this about. Steve, Vikki (Max and Kenko) keep up the good work. I will be back!

Visited on the last Sunday of the month for the regular, monthly Sunday Brunch with visiting friends. 4 adults and 5 children were all able to order exactly what they wanted, from a fabulous full English with locally sourced products, full vegetarian option, and a huge variety of precisely tailored options for the kids, plus delicious pastries for "dessert"! Added to which the fantastic service and plentiful Sunday papers make it a real treat. Off there again this evening for a glass of wine and a catch up with pals - we can't stay away! Highly recommend The White Horse Inn, and especially the fabulous brunch. Thanks Steve & Vikki for another 10/10 visit!

Thoroughly enjoyed the annual event that is The White Horse's Halloween party. Early fun for the kids with the pumpkin carving competition, fancy dress competition and apple bobbing, not to mention the child friendly environment that is The White Horse. The pub looked great with a concerted effort to create a Halloween theme, with the pumpkins it was very atmospheric! Food continued to be served in the face of the fun and frolics with a generous gammon and burger dish for us and proper fish and chips for the kids. Everything quietened down later in the evening to accommodate those wishing to have a quieter meal (would need to book after 8pm) just in case a pub full of children having a spooktastic time puts you off. Well done to all, looking forward to more autumn/winter events to come ...

We went to the White Horse with lots of families for Halloween and had a great time, tons of entertainment was put on for the kids, competitions, prizes, spooky menu and fab decorations - we loved it, and enjoyed 3 fun-filled hours before taking tired little ones home to bed. We go in with our kids once or twice a week and are always made to feel really welcome, despite the fairly regular spills and occasional tears that come with small children! The pub is an incredible asset to the village and has an amazing range of special events for the community. I also go to meet friends of an evening, to relax by the fire, and for a (rare!) romantic meal with my husband, when we enjoy some "grown-up time". We have always been made incredibly welcome and appreciate the delicate balance that Vikki and Steve are achieving between being family friendly and offering a relaxing escape for adults. It is the perfect village pub and a fabulous foodie destination for those from further afield - especially with the talented new chef! We loved our Xmas Day there last year and I'm planning to have my 40th there too! It really is one of the finest pubs in Shropshire and well worth a visit.

I had heard mixed reviews about this restaurant but like most places I had to check it out myself. It is located in a wonderful countryside with fantastic views! We were welcomed by a very friendly young lady (Beckie) who treated us as if we were part of the 'local pub' family. She was our waitress for the evening and was very friendly and attentive but without being over bearing. She genuinely cared about our experience which was nice to see as that can go a miss at some restaurants. We overheard that the owners were away at the time we were visiting, so we will make sure to visit again sometime soon! The food was exceptional. I had the chicken while my husband had the gammon. Both cooked to a great quality and left us wanting more. Do not miss out on this delightful restaurant! It deserves to do fantastically! Thank you for such a great evening.

Arrived for a Saturday night meal with high hopes. The bread with the olives starter was very poor, a bit like defrosted focaccia. The olives paste was bland too. Never mind, lets hope the mains are better.I had fish and chips, the blond has lasagna. Both should be staple, good cooking examples. My fish was OK, but it came with tasteless mushy pea paste and, worse of all, with reconstituted potato chunky chips which were dreadful. Why they couldn't do chunky chips with skins on, min prep time, and that taste significantly better one wonders? The blonde's lasagna was not good, very heavy and largely inedible. The waitress didn't even remember to bring us knives and forks. Suffice to say we were keen to leave and left no tip.Pub grub is not rocket science, it's harder to screw up than get right. Uuuurgh!

Our first visit and a meal to remember. I had some of the best belly pork I have eaten, the meat was so tender it just fell apart and the flavour was superb. Husband had burger, of which I had to have a taste of course, and it was lovely. He tried my meal and went Wow. All the produce is sourced as locally as possible and the list of all the producers is on a board in the bar so it was good to see that they are supporting the local community too. The pub is dog friendly and can be with you at the tables in the bar area, but not in the restaurant. A good old fashioned pub but a step up with the food. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Went last Friday evening with my Husband and two friends for an evening meal and we were all very impressed. Our meals were all extremely good and the young waitress that served us was really lovely. It has recently been completely refurbished by the new owners to a very high standard and what we thought nice was that the dining tables are very reasonably spaced apart giving diners more personal space. This afternoon we took a wrong turn coming out of Shrewsbury and stumbled on this pub at lunch time. Such a lovely place with friendly service. Only wanting something light to eat we were offered a smaller portion off the main menu. We had fish and chips which was superb. I was also so glad to see proper highchairs with trays available for my 11 month old. We have been to so many places where they offer those wooden seats that you push up to the table, but are never high enough for the child to eat from but just the right height for them to hit their head on the table. After our lunch we finished our drinks outside and could have happily sat their all afternoon in the sun. Unfortunately my son decided otherwise. The only comment I would make is that it would have been nice to see sandwiches or something like this available at lunchtime for those not wanting hot food or a 'main meal'.Such a great find and will return soon to sample Sunday lunch!

We were staying at a self catering cottage in Shropshire (see my review of Creagh Dhu) for our 49th wedding annerversary. So I wa slooking for somewhere for a good meal. There were several good pubs nea rto where we were staying but I was looking for something a bit special without driving miles to a quality restaurant. The White Horse had good reviews and was reasonably near so I booked a table. It proved to be a good choice. The pub itself looks fairly average from the outside but was attractive inside with a bar area and separate but not isolated dining area. We had a friendly welcome while we had a drink (good local beer but I can't remember the brewer. There were few other diners or drinkers but it was early, midweek in late October. The menu was quite extensive and made a point of stressing that most ingredients were locally sourced. Dishes ranged from traditional to modern. We opted to miss a starter so we could enjoy a desert. For mains I had rack of lamb and my wife duck. Both were high quality and very well cooked. Accompanying vegetables were superb (for example wild mushroom Dauphine potatoes - excellent). For desert I had an excellent warm spiced apple cake and my wife genuinely home made ice cream. Not cheap but overall an excellent meal - we would cetainly retur.

A warm country pub serving great ales with cosy fireside seating and ample seating for diners to enjoy the fantastic pub menu. .. we were there on a Sunday and so chose a traditional roast beef lunch of which the locally sourced beef was to die for and some of the best Yorkshire puds we've had:) ... only thing we would of liked was crisper roasties, but that's a personal preferance and you couldn't fault the taste of them - they were scummy:) Vikki the landlady is so lovely and nothing is to much for her so don't fear to ask. .. she is super friendly:) Going to be a regular soon, we hope? My husband and I ate here last week after reports we'd heard from friends. We were NOT disappointed. Firstly the atmosphere is wonderfully cosy, especially in the bar area where a huge log fire was the centrepiece of a cosy seating area with sofas. What really impressed us though was the way that Steve, (the owner) described their food ethos; how everything is locally sourced and produced, including the lambs that are bred and reared in a field directly behind the restaurant. There is even a board on the wall showing where each ingredient that the restaurant serves comes from throughout Shropshire. The food was absolutely superb and descriptions really do not do it justice. The menu is excellent with a wide variety to choose from. The starter I had, chicken parfait was really delicious, just the right size, accompanied by homemade bread and chutney. For a main course I chose a homemade beef burger, which is not something that I would normally choose, but fancied something different. I wasn't disappointed, it was superb, served in homemade garlic focaccia bread with chunky chips, salad and the most fabulous crisp onion rings I have ever tasted, they were unbelievably good!!To follow, I chose the cheeseboard which was pretty big, with good sized cheese portions again locally produced. This place is a true gem tucked away and well worth paying a visit, it is superb!!

I had heard good reports about this restaurant, but I was a little disappointed. A group of 14 of us booked a table for Sunday lunch after a 2 hour walk. We were hungry. Menus were brought to us quickly and orders were taken. Although some wanted starters the others asked for our main meal to come at the same time. This did not happen. There was quite a long wait for the main course. The plates were not hot. By the time a further dish of hot vegetables was brought out the meat, gravy and potatoes were only lukewarm. Very, very small dishes of horseradish and cranberry sauce were supplied when asked for. It took a while for plates to be cleared away and pudding menus to be handed out, a longish wait for the puddings and again a long wait for coffee. We sat down at before 1.30 and did not leave until after 3.30. The restaurant was not particularly busy, perhaps the slow service was due to only two people working behind the bar and serving the tables. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and on the wall there was interesting information regarding the food being locally sourced which was nice, I have not written this restaurant off and I hope to come back one day for a better experience as I think we might have visited on a bad day.

The inn itself is very nice on the eye from the outside, has a few tables out front, and has ample parking to the rear. On arrival at the bar, we were met by the very affable Steve, who while engaging us in pleasant conversation promptly took our drinks order and served it up. A nicer guy you couldn't wish to meet, Steve (and his partner Vikki) are doing something much more than merely running an inn/restaurant - they are putting into practice what seems more like a "good food philosophy". For example, because we hadn't visited before, Steve took us on a quick tour of the place and explained how and why they had come to acquire the inn. (How many proprietors take the time and the trouble to do that?) Steve also went on to summarise their overall approach, which is to grow and rear as much as possible on their doorstep. For example, they rear their own lambs and pigs in a field just out back, their breads are all home cooked, as are all their desserts and their ice creams etc.Diners can chose to take a table in a cosy set-aside area of the bar or in the main dining room (separate from the bar area). Given the impending onset of Autumn, we opted for the cosiness of the bar dining area. The tables were nicely spaced, clean and the chairs comfortably padded. While we were perusing the extensive menu, something in the corner of the bar dining area caught our eye. It was a chalk board showing the places where Steve and Nikki get all their locally sourced ingredients from - a shrine to local "food heroes".Menu studied, I ordered "salmon & prawn terrine, pickled cucumber, lemon & caper dressing" for starters, followed by "roast loin chop of home-reared lamb, wild mushroom dauphine potatoes, sautéed leaks, redcurrant jus" for main, and "roast peach, vanilla panna cotta, raspberry coulis & toasted almonds" for dessert. My wife ordered "chicken liver parfait, toasted homemade bread, apple & cider chutney" for starters followed by "homemade beef burger, smoked cheese, onion rings & tomato & red pepper relish served in the homemade focaccia bun with salad & French fries" for main, and "three counties cheeseboard" for dessert. The terrine was super, tasting nicely of the fish and had just a nice edge of acidity from the pickled cucumber. The lamb dish was even better - I struggle to remember when I last had lamb so tender and flavoursome, and with a very nice jus reduction too, plus the dauphine potatoes were gorgeous - in short a heavenly main dish. As for the roast peach & panna cotta - that was sublime - I could have eaten another. My wife's parfait was a corker, as was her burger. Sadly, my picture of the burger does not do it justice - it was a very generous burger indeed! The cheese plate was very high quality indeed - very tasty and varied hand-picked cheeses from local counties - excellent. In summary, we really enjoyed our first time at the White Horse Inn - we were treated to very good, friendly and efficient service and great homemade food which used high quality local ingredients and was very well cooked.Steve & Nikki deserve all the success and recognition in the world. We need more restaurants like this!!!Needless to say, the White Horse Inn is now down on our list of places to regularly dine out at.

We were immediately welcomed; the room was wonderfully quirky, as I would expect from a traditional timber-framed building, yet it was up-to-date with a good shower and tv.
