The White \Horse \inn in West Somerset

My wife and I stayed overnight in a most comfortable room overlooking the stream outside. The staff were excellent, dinner and breakfast high quality and the historic nature of the building impressive. Well recommended

Pretty looking pub, so I popped in while I was waiting to call in on someone locally. There was only one other customer there. However, while I was sipping my pint, the lady behind the bar was speaking with the other customer and loudly swearing at a message that she had obviously just received on her mobile phone. I felt the way she was talking in front of customers was out of order and I reckon she had been drinking. I left the rest of my pint (it wasn’t nice anyway), went to the loo (dirty) and left. My friend who I was visiting said it is not a good atmosphere in there now and doesn’t go there any more. What a shame for the locals.

An absolute gem of a pub, we stayed for 2 nights. Rooms was lovely, very clean with a view of the river. Food was delicious although portions were a bit on the large side for us, but that is not a moan. All staff were very friendly and cheerful. Couldn't recommend the White Horse enough.

After having seen the great reviews we visited as a family this evening and sadly wish we hadn’t. We were waiting over 1 hour for food, with no warning of the long wait given when we ordered nor did anyone come and apologise for the wait. Eventually 1hr15mins after we placed the order our food arrived, and sadly it wasn’t worth the wait. Clearly the kitchen was having issues this evening, and based on our experience we would not recommend.

This is a traditional pub, with a great atmosphere, super menu, a cosy log fire and lots of old style nic-nacs to look at. I had steak in ale pie. The steak was melt-in-the-mouth. Hubby had a delicious creamy fish pie from the specials board. There were several things on the menu that I would have been happy to have chosen. Staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient and other customers in the pub were friendly and chatty. We enjoyed our meals so much that we have reserved a table again for tomorrow evening.

We have been out of the area for a few months but we have to say we love coming to the Whitehorse. The staff and owner are always so friendly and polite,just how a proper English pub should be.the food was really good but on the down side,as we are both Chefs the presentation needs a little bit of work. Not everyone likes a full tin of mussy peas with fish and chips. This is only a bit of constructive criticism and it's not meant as anything else.we always recommend this establishment to visiting friends when in the area as we do like it there.Top marks to the owner and the staff at the Whitehorse Washford

Stayed for 2 nights. The staff (I presume father and son) have no sense of customer service. Not friendly on arrival. Room adequate and clean. But went out and returned at 10.10 to be told the bar was closed, no more drinks would be served and was then told I couldn’t go up the stairs in the bar to my room as the door was locked so I had to walk outside the pub to gain access to the room even though the bar still had people in it. Attitude very poor, when asked why I was just told you should have been told when you booked we close at 10.00. Well I wasn’t. What pub closes at 10.00 but still allows the locals to drink but residents not.

Paid a long overdue visit having read mentions of it in the past , had very enjoyable lunch with my daughter . We would certainly come again . The regulars obviously were enjoying themselves .

Mid-week visit for Lunch at this lovely country pub at Washford. A warm and friendly welcome from the barman (Mike), an excellent choice of local ales, good service, and the food was delicious - all at a very competitive price too. I only wish we had discovered this Gem earlier in the year as they have a lovely beer garden set next to the river - perfect for being outdoors in the Summer. Well Done! We will be back.

We had just been to cleeve abbey and saw the sign in the car park. We had spent a lot longer time in the abbey then we thought we would so thought we would give it a try. Im so pleased we didn’t drive to Dunster as the pub staff and food were lovely. I loved the quaintness of the pub and also the modern bit overlooking the river. The pub is also dog friendly so another plus for me. The steak and otter ale pie was delicious and the hubby said the same for his gammon.

Booked in for a meal after visiting Dunster Castle. Best pub meal we've had for ages. Highly recommend it, wish it was closer to where we live! Very friendly staff too. We had gammon, scampi and duo of pork loin chops, all delicious and large portions too.

We stayed one night hear and the Inn a lovely old world country pub. Friendly staff and very good breakfast and dinner. Lots of atmosphere. All rooms are upstairs and our room was at the back and very large with ensuite. Very tight stairs to access upstairs rooms. Parking available off street across the road from Inn. Highly recommended

Fabulous !!!!!! - all 4 of us have good appetites but we all struggled to clear our plates!!. No one outstanding recommendation, just ALL of the meals. Service was excellent throughout and the location and atmosphere was perfect.

Lovely location and does a roaring trade with locals, passing trade and tourists especially in the beer garden. The food is standard British pub food - fish and chips, gammon, steak and ale pie( very good) - all done well all of the time. Landlord is very chatty and straightforward - like the pub - good honest british fayre.

This is such an impressive pub, located in both sides of the River Washford, pub on one side and gardens with spacious 6-table gazebo on the other. Car park and gazebo are easily wheelchair accessible, which was important with Mother in Law. Weather beautiful when we visited in August, but gazebo would be suitable even in more inclement weather. Landlord, landlady and staff all super-welcoming, felt very much ‘at home’ here. Outside menu is simpler then that available in the dining room, but the traditional basket meals were excellent, not to mention the desserts and best cheeseboard we’ve had in a long time. We called in thinking it looked like a nice place for lunch. Barman greeted us with "yes" we asked to order drinks, then asked if we could sit down - were told "sit there" and a table was pointed at. We sat down and looked at the menu - looked nice but as we were deciding what to order the Barman could be heard moaning to the "locals" drinking in the bar about how unhappy he was with so many visitors to the area, we went on and on about it- thought locals did not really respond to him. We started to feel rather uncomfortable and unwelcome, so quickly finished our drinks and left, found another lovely friendly pub locally and enjoyed a very good lunch. Will nor be returning or recommending.

A great Inn with an amazing garden which also served food and drinks. We ate inside having booked and it was very busy. The English style menu had good choices and the food was excellent and arrived very promptly. The staff were very helpful and friendly too. There is limited parking at the Inn, but further up the lane is their large car park, so plenty of parking.

We were a large party of 14 visiting in August 2021 and overall the quality of the food was decent thought two people who both ordered the steak weren't particularly keen on the quality of the meal citing the meat as gristly. My food was decent and aside from the two steak orders the food was generally well received and all almost all of us enjoyed our food. The service was fantastic and we cannot fault the friendliness and welcome of the staff at all - the place gets 5 stars for service. We'd return again. Shame it was raining so heavily as the beer garden and play area for the kids looked fantastic but we didn't get to enjoy it owing to the torrential weather!

This was a great evening at the pub with my family. My parents had a burger each and I had fish. Absolutely fab burger!! So tasty. Great service from a man who worked behind the bar. He was up for a laugh and easy to chat with. Would definitely recommend to others!!

We stopped here following a recommendation from a family member. It was fully booked inside, but as it was nice weather we decided to sit outside with the ‘garden menu’. We asked for a children’s menu and we’re told there wasn’t one, so our 5 yr old had to have a £8.95 basket meal. We weren’t even offered a smaller portion and they wouldn’t even put hers on a small plate. We then asked for our starter to be sent with the 5 year olds meal first and we’re told this couldn’t be done either, so we had to have our starter at the same time as our main meal. Food wasn’t too bad until I chewed on a plastic cheese wrapper not removed from our portion of nachos! (starter) We finished what we could and left. We definitely won’t be returning or won’t recommend this pub to anyone else, as we found it totally unaccommodating with awful customer service.

Fabulous pub with great food, accommodating 8 of us. Have been a couple of times in a week - very friendly. The Steak deserves a mention as does the mushroom stroganoff!

Called in for evening meal when passing. Our dog was made as welcome as ourselves within the pub with Mark bringing her a bowl of water without us requesting any. Service was good, slight mix up with order, asked for cheese on the chips included in a meal and was charged for separate cheesy chips to the tune of over £4 for grated cheese, didn't complain because everything else was good. Personal feedback is that the baguettes could be replaced with wraps or panini, bit tough and dry as a meal. The beef and horseradish baguette was lovely but would have been easier to eat if gravy replaced the two sachets of horseradish sauce. Parking is very tight and difficult to negotiate.Overall, lovely welcoming country pub, would visit again, thank you.

Very covid aware. It appeared that they were short staffed the particular day 4 of us visited so waited for quite a while but the staff didn't lose their sense of humour and the customer service was good.The gammon was unfortunately dry but the other three meals were well cooked and enjoyed by our group. The food was nothing out of the ordinary but okay - made up for by very good chips.

This is a great place to stay as many of the places to visit on the north coast of Somerset/Devon and on Exmoor are within 40 minutes drive from the hotel. Very friendly staff throughout the Inn and the room we had was not only very spacious (on the 3rd floor) and well appointed but was very clean and comfortable. We had an 88 year old with us and she was given a nice room on the ground floor in the hotel annex which she enjoyed. We ate in the restaurant (you can also eat in the bar) for the 3 nights and were served a very nice breakfast each morning. The food was very good indeed and there was plenty of it on the plate. All the food we ate was excellent and reasonably priced. Meals were Service in the restaurant was always courteous and very friendly. In good weather there is a nice area next to the river to sit with a drink or for eating. Covid rules were adhered to at all times. We stayed for 3 nights and had breakfast and dinner each day. We would certainly stay there again.

After a very disappointing and cancelled first night of a two night stay elsewhere in the area . With great luck we found the White Horse Inn after meeting the owner Tim who not only took the time and trouble to show us around including available rooms we booked for the night including dinner and breakfast.What an excellent choice we made the food both our our evening meal which was of superb quality and very generous proportions. The nights sleep in our lovely cottage feel old fashioned bedroom was a positive joy after our previous nights experience elsewhere. The breakfast in the morning was of exactly the same quality and proportion as the meal the night before.All of the above would not be possible without the brilliant staff who cannot do enough to help in anyway possible. We will return to this excellent establishment and would highly recommend The White Horse Inn Washford to anyone wanting a lovely break in the area.

Stayed here for a weekend away with friends. It was our base for two walks in Exmoor. Welcome was fantastic, Daz helped to guide us through changes due to COVID. We spent the afternoon in the Pub Garden which is large enough with a lovely stream running through. We had an evening meal and breakfast. Both of which were excellent, both in quality and quantity. All the staff were pleasant and had a bit of personality, which helped to make you feel like a local.Definitely recommend to anyone either for a drink when passing, food or a stay.

This pub came with with a recommendation from our B & B, it looked nice enough from outside and had rather a nice beer garden. The alarm bells should have started ringing when, after three emails we didn't have a reply for our request for a menu of the evening meals, nothing was displayed outside either. Now, I fully appreciate the adherence to keeping covid compliant, there were signs everywhere, but no WiFi with which to sign in and register. The pub itself was quite quaint, the bar area nice, service was pretty good too, we ordered starters and main. The starters were pretty tasty, Whitebait and the nachos, can't really go wrong there, but the main courses were a little disappointing to say the least, to the point that we didn't eat the chargrilled chicken. The veg was nice enough, but the chicken pretty bland and tasteless. The salmon was OK, although pretty salty. I might be so bold to guess that they were cooked from frozen and not fresh. What was further disappointing is that not once were we asked how our meal was and the price of the bottle of wine was rather extortionate considering the ice bucket was also a water jug. I know its been half term week, no lamb, no chardonnay, no specials board, just felt that the front of house could have extended the warmest of welcomes to all guests. Shame. With regards value for money, I would say not, pretty expensive for the quality of food served.

Covid rules well applied...so scanned NHS QR then was allowed to seat, waited 30 minute for drinks order only to be told no real ale or beer in outdoor garden, just 3 larger and a cider, but not allowed to order/collect a proper beer from inside pub?! Menu small, but half of it unavailable (not told at start when seated, shame we'd now committed 40mins already)...leaving a choice of 3 things, so "posh fish fingers" & chips it was ...which as you can see was kids fish n chips..not even a bit of garnish. Really poor, under staffed. Hopefully it was a one off, but cannot recommend the garden area. Lovely setting, poor management. Fine for a lager or non local cider. We booked this last minute and the staff were very accommodating. On arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our table through some old barn doors. The staff were very patient and doing a great job with regards covid restrictions, tables were cleaned immediately when people left. The food was fresh, hot and cooked very well.

Booked a table to ensure we could have a table being Friday night, it was a wonderful welcome and a lovely, friendly pub. We had our 6 month old lab with us, and he was in good company with a number of other dogs and locals, all well behaved ☺️. The local beer is great, and the food is superb..we had the specials, fishermans pie and the belly pork, both perfectly cooked, delicious!Definitely recommend a visit, and would be the kind of pub we would want to live near and visit more often
