Went for lunch with my husband today. Fabulous freshly caught cod, served fried in panko breadcrumbs with chips and peas. Also had a side salad that was better than many a main salad in other establishments - full of different types of salad leaves with baby tomatoes and cucumber with sunflower seeds and balsamic dressing. However, the star was the beautiful fresh cod. We'll be back, and hope there will have been a delivery from Brixham!

Not been for a while, but has become expensive and although good food, it doesn’t warrant the price tag or the unfriendly/non welcome! Looks like they are concentrating more on events.

Attended our Nephews wedding, the venue was set aside for the whole day. The food was exceptional, from the entrée to the main course, a buffet and even a chilli at the end of the day. The owners and staff could not have done more or been more hospitable. I will 100% recommend it to family and friends. Good size car park, lovely gardens, well stocked bar and really "exceptional" food. I'm told their Sunday Roasts are outstanding and I will be going back with family and friends.

On April 13th my daughter and her husband got married in this gorgeous country pub. We couldn't believe the whole place was closed to the public and became an amazing wedding venue. The gardens were transformed with lights and flowers and inside worked like clockwork. The food was amazing and everything had been thought of by Callum, Mike and the team. The turnaround from wedding Chapel to dining room went smoothly and on time. Couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere and we keep getting messages from friends and family to say it was the nicest most relaxed wedding they had been to. Thank you so much to all the team for giving my daughter and new son in law the best day.

We held our wedding at The White Horse on the 13th April after realising we would be let down by another terrible venue. And boy are we glad that happened! Our quote was tailored to meet our needs & the communication with Callum who managed our wedding was spot on. On the day the whole team were amazing and the food was nothing short of superb. The pub itself was transformed from an already gorgeous country pub to our very own fairly lit chapel, wedding breakfast ballroom & private gardens, followed by a disco room! All of our guests said it was the best wedding’s they have ever been to. And while we can take a teeny bit of credit for choosing this venue, Mike, Callum & team need the highest of praise for outstanding wedding coordination and patience in managing all of our wish list! Thank you guys. So incredibly grateful. 🥂❤️

As usual, excellent freshly prepared food and good friendly service. What set this visit apart was that one of our party had a number of food allergies, we explained these when we booked and the team were incredibly understanding, knowledgeable about the ingredients used and went out of their way to ensure nothing would spoil the meal. This extended to purchasing specific ingredients and double checking what can and cannot be used whilst taking the order.

Highly recommended in every way. From initial booking of a large table (11) through to service on the day, great menu and drinks options (including AF) our visit was a very happy one. They even kindly gave us some butter (as the supermarket delivery missed it off) and some eye drops - now that’s going above and beyond! Thank you White Horse team.

We visited the pub on Friday 23rd June on off chance of getting a table after arriving at Burnt House Farm where we were staying. We got there about 7-30 pm. The lady behind the bar was serving someone, so we waited. Upon finishing with them, she turned her back, totally ignoring us, and proceeded to do something. Eventually, after quite some time, she turned around and simply said, "Yes." We asked if a table was available to which we got a simple "no." We weren't expecting a table to be available, but do expect some courtesy. We found the Lady's attitude very rube and that made sure we didn't book this pub for another night of our stay. A far cry from the welcoming at the Pack Horse Inn, the other pub in the village.

Several friends had recommended the White Horse Inn for food particularly steaks, but we've never got around to it until now ..... It was my wife's birthday & she wanted to go somewhere local, but different from our usual places. It was well worth booking a table as the management like to schedule the cooking to cope with the appropriate number of diners. It's a large pub with plenty of room outside in the gardens on a sunny day, so I imagine it could become very busy. My wife had the Cajun chicken & I had the duck: this was one of the best meals I've had for a long time washed down by a Bristol lager that I hadn't come across before, but was allowed to sample before ordering. The crispy skin of the duck was tasty along with a great black cherry sauce & super chips to soak up the sauce - the meat almost fell off the bones. It's not 'fine dining' with table cloths, etc. but great food & drink in very pleasant surroundings with friendly hosts: just the way we like it! We look forward to the next time!

Where do I start !! During covid my then Fiancée and I decided to look for a small wedding venue that would cater for smaller parties of 25 people. Unfortunately most venues refused us or wanted big money to accommodate a smaller group. We decided to try a local pub near by which we've eaten in many times. We spoke to Mike the owner of the whitehorse inn who was happy to accommodate us. We booked the whole pub and a 3 course meal for our guests from 11am to 6 pm with complete exclusivity. Mike and the whole team made our special day exactly that ! The Food here is of Gastro quality in my opinion and I think the owners of the establishment should have this stated on his premises/website. 20 starters came out steaming hot one after the other and it was exactly the same for all the other courses. All steaks were cooked to perfection too. I am very impressed with the quality of the food you certainly have gained my custom for years to come. The staff were excellent throughout the day too. The grounds are beautiful and we really appreciate the heart shaped bush you cut for us to make some great photo opportunities. The cost of all this was exceptional considering the quality of the food. All our guests had a blast and we can't thank you enough for making our day that extra special. Mike & Viv

Lovely food delivered with a great smile and always someone returns to make sure it was all ok, ( such a trait that is missing these days)… A very nice selection of beers and spirits……the gin selection is just stunning for a country pub. Try the mushroom Croquet, it’s truly filling and so well presented. If your looking for a country pub with a great cook, you won’t be disappointed…..Open from Wed to Sun, you need to book for a Sunday lunch….so gooood…… don’t drive pass go in, be surprised and amazed……

We made a lunchtime return visit to this traditional Somerset inn and received our usual warm welcome. We are not locals and therefore greatly appreciate the friendly greeting that we unfailingly receive. The White Horse has a sunny garden with plenty of space for outdoor dining but on this occasion we ate inside in the confortable lounge bar with table service. As always, the food was excellent and, together with the drinks, attractively priced. It was freshly prepared, hot, tasty and well presented. I particularly enjoyed my Croque Forestiere, served with fries, a golden fired egg and a generous salad garnish. The Elderflower and Passion Fruit cheesecake that followed it was rich and satisfying, a delicious highlight! The bill for four three course lunches, including drinks, came to a very reasonable £155 - excellent value for money in these financially difficult times. We will certainly be returning in the near future and I would not hesitate to recommend this excellent hostelry to anybody who is wondering whether to give it a try.

Booked here on recommendation of hosts at Cripps Farm. Lovely helpful waitress showed us to our reserved table. We had steak which was cooked to perfection and ham egg and chips. Food was lovely only issue the square of blue tack found amongst my chips. Waitress was terribly apologetic as was the waiter that put our food down. After some chat they came to the conclusion it fell while taking a cloth down to hold the hot plate. Was offered free desserts nice touch but when we went to settle the bill (owner??) stated she had taken one drink off the bill, didn’t seem overly apologetic either unlike the young lady who waitressed who was clearly mortified. Won’t let it overshadow the delicious meal however note to yourself don’t stick up towels with blu tack as the next customer may not be as gracious as we were!

Not holding out much hope as the other pub in the village had been pretty blunt about “We should have booked” After the bar staff asking the chef, could we do a table for two, nice that they all communicate, we took a table and ordered. I had the Hawaiian Burger, and the wife a Prawn Cocktail and salad as her main. Honestly, this was the best burger i have had all Holiday. Great flavour. Wife enjoyed hers too. Made a spontaneous visit to The White Horse on a mid-week lunchtime in early December. It was a quiet time and we received a very warm welcome which was followed up by excellent, friendly but non-intrusive service, which made us feel valued as customers. The food we ordered was freshly prepared, tasty and generously portioned. It was very reasonably priced and, as you would expect from a traditional country inn, there was a good variety of drinks on offer. Christmas decorations were up and we felt cosy, relaxed and well looked after. We hadn't been there since before lockdown but we will not be so long in returning next time and are very happy to recommend this hostelry to anybody as well worth a visit.

The roast beefs were excellent; generous portions of tender roast beef with gravy on the side, dishes of perfectly cooked vegetables, including a cauliflower cheese, great roasties and a large yorkshire. I've been waiting to crank up my reviewing that covid halted. This sensational meal did the trick."It helps to use the best meat" is what the Head Chef and, in his words, "gardener, repairman and chief bottle washer" explained modestly - and accurately - when my wife and I raved about her burger and my sirloin as we left. Of course we got the name of the butcher, to whom we shall now transfer our carnivorous needs. But that's the first half of the partnership that created my plate of 10oz sirloin steak with butter sauce and half a grilled beefsteak tomato. The correctly ordered "medium rare" (my bit) and perfectly executed preparation (Chef's bit) delivered the sensational modest and leisurely chew factor (the medium rare effect). The bucket of delicious chunky chips completed the classic trio. You know - the only way to eat steak.Steak. Tomato. Chips. Quintessential if done right. It didn't, after all, get knighted Sir Loin for nothing. This was the best steak I've been served since a memorable one (now in second place) in Singapore 22 years ago and including London and Bristol top spots since. The pre-starter olives were the best I've been served since Rick Stein's olive jar in Padstow. Crisp, firm and delicious. My wife's burger was juicy and tasty. I stuck to the craft ale throughout because what I'd ordered as my thirst quencher turned out to be the perfect accompaniment for the meal. Small menu, sure - but the courses mentioned here were excellent. And oh, that steak. As the big man says: "I'll be back".

Eaten here a few times as we're local. The food is always outstanding, very consistent and despite it being a small menu that doesn't change, this does not bother us. However, the Landlady (I assume) ought to consider retiring. If you haven't booked a table you get a scowl and a real 'effort' to find you one even though there are loads of tables. The young service staff however are always lovely. It's often cold and lacking in any atmosphere too which spoils your evening rather and it's not a cheap night out !

It was just “ the menus are at the bar, you order food and drinks at the bar”. What about a bright hello, asking if we would like to see a menu etc. The young man who brought our food and coffee was great, maybe he should be welcoming people on their arrival, certainly the lady we dealt with us was not up to it. Went there twice over the last week, once for a Sunday lunch and once for a "normal" one.On both occasions the food was excellent, beautiful bit of roast beef on the Sunday and a very convincing pie during the week.Limited menu on the Sunday (roast or stay at home) and a considerably greater range on the other days with 3 or 4 pies, several fish options and all very good.Interestingly the sunday lunch comes with the meat and yorkshire on the plate and the potatoes and vegetables (peas, carrots and red cabbage) as well as a cauliflower cheese side all come as shared dishes on the table with a healthy sized ration of each.Staff excellent, friendly and responsive.Note that the Sunday lunch is very busy so you would do well to reserveMy only complaint would be one for all the pubs in the area that they don't serve IPA.

Visited the White Horse Inn for the first time today after being recommended by a friend. After being asked to select our meats before arrival, with a choice of just Chicken, Beef or nut roast, I have to say, I was not expecting much more than a standard roast dinner on parr with every other country pub I've ever been to. However, as soon as we walked in we were surrounded by the most amazing aroma of roast dinner and plenty of people tucking in to yummy plates of food. We were soon greeted by I assume the owner and taken to our table. Not long after, our meat arrived (mine being beef), followed by a bowl of veg (carrots, peas, red cabbage and magnetoue), plenty of cauliflower cheese and extra gravy. Everything perfectly cooked and seasoned. What a pleasure!! We then moved on to desserts, which was just the icing on the cake. I had the banoffee pudding and it was just fab, as were the rest of them. Lovely presentation and lovely flavours!Thank you for an amazing meal :)

Went for Sunday lunch here couple of weeks ago. Heard good things about it and had to book a table, thus thinking, it must be good. We had a lonely table in the bar, no-one else there, only us. Plenty of people in the actual restaurant part. Our choice of lunch, which you had to choose when you booked, was the beef. It arrived, not too long a wait. Plenty of beef on the plate, nice but as thin as paper. Too thin to even have much taste to it. The veg was okay, but only small amount for two people. The Yorkshire was, flat as a pancake. Gravy lovely. Was quite disappointed, as it was very expensive for what you got. The White Horse itself was a lovely pub, lovely polite staff, but although the weekday meals may be good, I won't go there again for Sunday lunch.

So different, so inventive, so delicious. We’ve had other things on the menu too and they have all been fantastic. Cannot fault this place. Great food, drinks and staff. Outstanding.

Several friends booked a meal and we were asked on booking our choices from menu as there were a few of us No deposit was paid. We assumed this was so they could be organised though I have never experienced this before unless it was pre paid for or a deposit made. On the date of attendance a member of the party did not attend due to illness and we were told the food for this individual had to be paid for . Whilst we were eating an extremely rude woman brought a plate out with the meal that she had advised had been pre prepared (pie and chips)and it had to be paid for. She outrageously plonked the plate in the middle of the table between us all whilst we were eating. A horrible experience unfriendly, rude and in all my years of dining out be it a pub or restaurant I have never experienced anything like it. Dire hospitality

We ate here 4 times in a week while staying in the area. The food was exceptional. The sirloin steaks are probably the best we have ever tasted. The steak pies are award winning. You will not be disappointed

It's by no means the cheapest and there's not a great deal of choice, but we have never been disappointed. The beef is always superb and the vegetables freshly cooked. What has impressed us is that the gravy suits the meat, so that if you choose beef you are served matching, tasty, gravy; while light gravy is served with chicken. As for the prawn cocktail starter, Wow! Almost a meal in itself! Highly recommended.

We visited for lunch. The inn is tastefully decorated inside and surrounded by scenic countryside. The food was delicious and substantial. I recommend the parfait. The prices were mid-range and the staff were very nice. There is plenty of parking. I enjoyed lunch at this inn very much and would happily return again.

Love the Whitehorse, another superb Sunday lunch. We both had roast beef followed by cheesecake. The beef is tender and the vegetables are beautifully cooked, my favourite is the cauliflower cheese. Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, fantastic gravy, what more could you want, I know cheesecake!

Having read the reviews on here, we decided to meet old friends there. OK so we were there for lunch on a hot Wednesday but first impressions were not good. A tepid welcome to a vast, silent, empty pub. No atmosphere. Rather tatty furniture, the menus looked well-worn and the choice very limited. We very nearly walked out at that point. Three of us decided to order pies which, to be fair, were delicious, served hot and quickly. Our other guest was looking forward to a piece of fish but had to settle for scampi which was OK. The ice creams were fine too. But Oh for a bit of ambience, personality, even a smile.

Been a couple of times now since the newest change of ownership. Really good menu, not huge but enough to choose from. Their pies are to die for ! Good range of wine and beers, served at the correct temperatures (sadly uncommon these days..) Never got round to trying the puddings which is a huge disappointment as they look so good, always too full. Not cheap but good value for money overall.

Seeing friends on a West Country visit. Our friends suggested we try this pub. Wonderful meal, best roast beef lunch for a long time. We had asked for rare beef when booking and they delivered perfectly . The beef had the usual accompaniments of Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes with lashings of great rich gravy. Addditional vegetables, carrots, peas, mange tout, red cabbage and cauliflower cheese.....all piping hot and perfectly cooked....were brought to the table. Great lunch, we hope to return.

We have only been going to the White Horse for three months since being recommended by a friend. We have now been there probably 12 times -). The food is superb, the Sunday lunches are brilliant, service is always excellent. I have eaten in top restaurants all over the world due to my job and can say hand on heart the constant excellent standard provided by the team at the White Horse is up amongst the best. On trip advisor you cannot use names so all I can say is that the chef always goes the extra mile to give us what we want (Extra Garlic, Café De Paris Butter made to not so secret recipe is a must) and the home made puddings made by the daughter of the chef /owner's such as Lemon Bread and Butter pudding makes a man who does not usually have a desert have one every time-). I almost don't want to give feedback as you already have to book to get in on a Sunday but with the hard work and effort put in by the team I now feel I have to even though it means I might not get a table.

We visited the White Horse Inn while on holiday nearby. We had read the reviews and always like to try country pubs who serve home cooked, fresh food rather than the corporate pubs. We were not disappointed. Thankfully, we had booked a table as when we got there there was a sign saying the kitchen was full with orders for the night. We arrived a little early and were seated at our table but not given the menus until our actual booked time. I can understand how organised they have to be in order to get the freshly cooked food out to everyone in good time. The menu is not very varied, but everything we had was of high quality. We were slightly disappointed they don't do 'sides', my son would have like onion rings with his burger. Still, my husband and son rated the burgers as amongst the best they have ever had and my cajun chicken was delicious. The puddings were delicious too. We would definitely return if in the area but i would say booking is essential.

We have eaten at this traditional Victorian pub for dinner a few times when visiting my grandad. The food is consistently excellent, my grandad swears by the confit duck and for me the steak is divine, you really can taste the quality of the locally sourced organic meat. I don’t know what their secret is to cooking chips, but again you will be hard pressed to find better! Every dessert we have tried has been sublimely indulgent, the baked lemon bread and butter pudding is out of this world!

Now I've eaten (and drank) in a lot of westcountry pubs from as far north as Shropshire right down as far south as Cornwall and this is one of the best pub meals I've ever had. The building is quite charming and retains its traditional pub feel having not been gentrified like many other country boozers. The cider selection could have been a little more diverse given its location but other than that I can't fault it... I had scampi and chips, she had the pie.. the kids meals were ham, egg and chips... The food wasn't cheap but not expensive.. I don't mind forking out if it's good and it was the best. Beautiful garden. Excellent food and very attentive staff. Would recommend this pub.

We went to have lunch in the garden (on a beautiful sunny hot Sunday) as we had heard good reports about the food. Sadly, after we had ordered a drink, we found that we could not order anything for lunch other than a Ploughman's or a Sandwich if we wanted to eat outside. There was only a roast dinner available for pre-booked diners inside, and nothing else available on the menu.....not that it mattered as we hadn't pre-booked. Very disappointing and won't be going back. On the plus side, it was lovely sitting in the garden, even if I was a little hungry due to not having had lunch!

We visited the restaurant on a Friday and were surprised to find the it quiet. The ambience is good and overall is a great place to dine . I ordered the sirloin steak but was disappointed with my meal. It arrived on a plate with a tub of chips (probably 10-12 in said tub) and that was it! No mushrooms, onion rings, tomatoes, no extras at all. Charging £17 for this I thought was rather extreme. My husband had the cod goujons which he said were ok but he's had better : our friend had the steak and ale pie and she said it was tasty, Unfortunately we will not be visiting again as could have been better.

We live in a neighbouring village and have never visited this pub, well that was a mistake! It was a very welcoming traditional pub with the bonus of Timothy Taylor on tap. We had a soup starter with 2 hunks of bread and butter, very tasty and homemade. The menu is simple but with enough variety of hearty dishes to choose from. The steak and ale pie was great, accompanied with a rich gravy and mash. The fish and chips, a good size portion of fish in breadcrumb, nothing was greasy and all in all good value. I’d recommend having a canter down to this place for a solid meal, certainly one of the best in the area.

We ate a traditional Sunday Lunch here with another couple, arriving at noon to our booked table. It was extremely busy, with all tables occupied. When the food arrived we could see why; everything was prepared to perfection! The roast beef was juicy, medium rare and extremely tasty. We chatted after dinner with the proprietor and mentioned the beef. He said that all his beef was sourced from a local farm so he and his staff had a long-standing relationship with the farmer producing the beef. One person at our table also had roast chicken and liked it very much. As it was a sunny day we took some drinks after dinner to the garden at the side of the pub, where there were several comfortable picnic tables where we could sit. All told, we were at the pub for 3 hours. The view from the garden was into a lush field across the road, with a stream running alongside. What a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Superb atmosphere, the best steak I’ve had in my life! (10oz fillet) chef was so down to earth and welcoming - showed us different cuts of steak and told us about their source. Went above and beyond for service - orders taken quickly and all staff friendly and polite. Felt a very cosy and happy little village pub. Will definitely be back for more steak and the fresh salad bowls that come with it! :) Thank you so much ☺️

Poor service, the two boys was unfriendly. Had to ask twice where our drink and food was. Was very basic for what they charge. Well over cooked. Could have gone done my local burger van and got better food and service. Felt extremely let down as we used to go there a lot of our visits to cheddar. But no longer. Over £70.00 spent, could have had a nice meal else where for less. Extremely disappointed ☹️ never go back. When we complain they did nothing to sort it.
