The White Horse Inn in Wiltshire

Unfortunately, this isn’t a good review at all after loving this place for so long. We booked for a Sunday lunch for a table of 3 including our two year old son. I had the pork, my wife had the beef and we ordered a child’s roast dinner. First of all we ordered some drinks which, one didn’t arrive so I had to ask the waitress when it would come. When the food arrived it was immediately underwhelming. The pork portion looked large, but it was mostly fat, and ‘crackling’ was soggy. The roast potato’s were so dry and hard to cut, and the same goes for the Yorkshire pudding. The veg included 1 very small carrot and some dry cabbage. There was a side of cauliflower cheese, this was also disappointing. We paid the bill and left promptly, only to call the pub later that day to ask if there was anything wrong that day with the chef, and to voice our dissatisfaction with what was a fantastic pub. They apologised, but insisted the food is cooked to what they believe the correct standard, they have offered us a refund of one of the meals, however this has yet to be received. I really hope this place improves. It use to be a fantastic place for Sunday lunch. When you go out for food you expect to eat better than you would at home, sadly for this place, we should have stayed at home!

We stayed for three very pleasant nights and dined twice. An attentive manager supported by his young but professional resturant staff enhanced an excellent experience. Obviously with its good resturant grading we expected good food. We got it - A very good chef resides here. We tried fish & chips the first night - absolutely lovely. The second dinner we went for nibbles to start followed by Cod chowder dishes with new potatoes, amazing special fries & fresh peas with asparo. Very good portions were served and all were perfectly cooked. The french wine we chose was equally good. Next time we visit the area we will stay & dine here.

We both stayed and ate here. Our room had no room darkening curtains or shades, and there is only a bathtub with a shower attachment, not an actual stand up shower, which was quite a disappointment since this wasn’t clear when we booked. The staff here are very nice. We ate dinner at the restaurant and the food was very good, but the portions are so small that we were still quite hungry after a full meal, so we went to the Tesco superstore down the road to get more food.

The food I, and my two friends, received was very mediocre in quality and served luke warm. The gnocchi with asparagus which was supposed to be a main covered only a third of the plate - a small starter portion but it cost £18.50! I would NOT recommend eating at this pub. I would also suggest customers taste the draught beers before ordering as they can be stale.

What a shame! To reflect on recent reviews, I have also been coming to this pub on and off for a few years though infrequently as it’s a 20 minute drive. Today was probably the poorest roast I have eaten in 10 years. I was really hungry so annoyingly I put up with it however my partner left hers almost entirely. To sum up: Yesterdays spuds, burnt ryvita for a yorky, undercooked parsnip, 3 tiny strips of bitter outside savoy cabbage leaves, every component had no seasoning so it was totally bland & to top it all was like warm at best. At £24 for topside I should have sussed it earlier and I was in the garden so I had paid upfront. Big mistake by me….you should be ashamed. When the waitress asked I explained but no come back was forthcoming. What an embarrassment.

Food was superb. We arrive just after 7.00 to a very quiet restaurant. The service was excellent and the food delicious. It was a shame it was so quiet for a Friday evening as you worry about a pub sustaining such high quality/standards if they do not have enough customers. I had the Lamb Harissa, my husband had the Cider Braised Belly Pork and my BiL had the Sirlion Steak. On reflection, we probably needed a side of potatoes to make the meals (apart from the Sirlion of course) complete. The food was outstanding quality and I would eat here regularly if I lived closer.

Went there for Sunday dinner with family. When the roast dinners arrived, my meat was stone cold. It was sent back and the chef obviously did not like it. I had a fresh meal which had been put in the microwave as well to make sure. The meal could not be eaten straight away as it was bubbling hot. The plate was so hot it melted the varnish on the table and the staff had to prise it off with a knife! The other meals were not piping hot and soon went cold but were eaten. We were not charged for my meal. I bet the kitchen staff had a right laugh at my expense for complaining. Obviously won't be going back or recommending it to anyone. Basic task for kitchen staff, ensure food is hot!!!!

From the minute we arrived, we felt welcomed and relaxed. Had dinner with our Son & Daughter In Law who live in Calne. Dinner was amazing. We all had starters & Main Course. We couldn’t manage a dessert. However, we did have the Cheese Selection. Our waiter was very attentive and so polite. He again, made us feel at ease. Compliments to the chef as we couldn’t fault the food. Breakfast was equity as good. Our room was spotless and we had a small private courtyard with a small table and chairs. Would highly recommend The White Horse.

I took my mum here for mother’s day and we both absolutely loved the food here! The staff were so down to earth, chatty and friendly and we felt at ease here! The price is decent for the quality of service and food you get. I highly recommend to anyone bring family or friends for any occasion :)

Disappointing Sunday lunch for Mothers Day, cold roast beef, soft roast potatoes. Service was adequate once meals delivered. Had to ask a couple of times for more gravy and asked for Horse Radish which never arrived despite people stood around.

Roast dinner was so disappointing, it came out lukewarm with thin over cooked beef, soggy tasteless potatoes and a dribble of gravy. Service wise we weren’t looked after, asked twice for horseradish and extra gravy which came when the majority had finished their meals. When asked how our meals were honest feedback was given although no apology or confirmation our feedback would be passed on was given. Very disappointing and a poor experience will not be returning!

Were we just unlucky or is this the new norm? Mme Gourmand & I visited with another couple for Sunday lunch - embarrassingly my recommendation having been before years ago and enjoyed it. One of the party went for the burger whilst the remaining threesome went for the Sunday roast - one individual plate and one sharing platter. Where do I start? Anaemic, soggy roast potatoes, burnt and stodgy cauliflower cheese, 15ml of gravy, dry Yorkshire puddings and then we get to the meat! Apparently they think that 2 small and overcooked slices of beef, an overcooked chicken breast and a slab of dry pork justifies the £40 ticket. It does not. Unsurprisingly we complained! They then produced two large pink slices of beef and a much better replacement chicken breast. The initial platter should have never left the kitchen in that state - there’s no excuse and a proper chef would know that. Despite the delay with the replacements, there was no apology and no adjustment to the bill which, at £189 (including wine and drinks) was very poor value. We paid and will vote with our wallet going forward - there’s many better lunches and service out there!!

Great restaurant in a lovely village. Wednesday lunchtime with friends we had a fantastic 3-course lunch full of flavour and beautifully presented.

We have just enjoyed the 7 course taster menu. It was absolutely amazing, every dish was sublime, and served by lovely attentive happy staff. A huge thank you to the chef and everyone in the kitchen, a fantastic effort. Complemented by great beers and wines. Definitely will be back

Everything was perfect for our small celebratory meal. The food was excellent as was the service and we felt very well looked-after by the staff. There were four of us in total. Two people chose from the lunch set menu, which seemed very reasonable. Sometimes if you choose from this menu, the portions are a little smaller, but in this case there was no stinting on the helpings. Sadly, we were too full after two courses and unable to try a dessert. We were also very pleased and impressed that the pub is open on a Monday lunchtime. It is quite difficult to find other local eateries which are open on a Monday.

We went for the Burns Night supper and the menu was outstanding. Humble haggis, neeps and tatties raised to another level and creatively presented. Delicious wines and whiskeys on offer, warm ambiance and friendly service.

We had set lunch on a Tuesday. Pub/restaurant was very quiet but the food was great. Went with the view of 2 courses for £17.95, but the menu was so good we had 3 course £22.50. Shall definitely go again.

Excellent country pub! We visited as a group of 7 for my partners birthday. Whilst we live fairly locally, we have never been here before and we are now so glad we have discovered this fantastic pub - and we will most definitely be back! Everything about the visit was excellent - the interior was cosy and clean, the staff were very attentive and there was no waiting around for ages. The food was absolutely delicious, we all had a mixture of roasts and my brother had a burger. We all really enjoyed our food. We would definitely recommend this excellent pub and will be back.

Venturing in on a brisk autumn Sunday for lunch with my family I was excited at the prospect of a tasty wholesome roast platter to share. I sat for 20 minutes invisible to the front of house staff while they struggled to take our orders. We then had to order our drinks at the bar. Instructions were unclear. It would appear the do it yourself front of house service continued into the kitchen as the Partridge was served looking like it had been sat in the autumn sun for 30 minutes. After cutting it open and informing the waiter I was informed this was appropriate as it’s a gamey bird, and ok to eat. Although I appreciate it’s a gamy bird, we were served raw fleshy meat.. I love pink meat, but not raw.. I’ll leave a photo so you can make up your own minds. Not once did the staff check up to see if everything was ok. The young waiter then decided to take my partners plate away while my daughter and I were still eating.. The whole experience was poor. I’ve eaten here before (during covid) and the food/service was great. Not again.

We stayed two nights at The White Horse this weekend just gone. The B&B accommodation was fine - not brilliant, not at all bad - but the location is fab, the staff were a joy, and the food (2 x supper and 2 x breakfast) was absolutely excellent. Superb menus, beautifully cooked and delightfully presented. A thoughtful and original wine list to boot. Great vibe all round. Recommended!

Stayed at the White Horse for just one night. Small country pub with a few rooms in another building at the back, hardly a Hotel. Staff were ok, well the only one we saw Was a young man who worked behind the bar in the evening showed us to our room and then served our breakfast in the morning.
