Stunning place. The food was of such high standards, yet very affordable. It’s one of our favourite places in Wiltshire. Second time here, and definitely not the last.

We went here to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. We booked one of the bigger rooms and had dinner in the hotel. The hotel is in a quiet location in a small village about 20 mins from Cirencester and 15 mins from Malmesbury. It's an attractive building set in lovely grounds, which contains an outdoor pool. The property and the grounds are obviously well maintained. The food was very good. Dinner was well prepared and service in the orangery dinning room was friendly and attentive. Similarly, the cooked breakfast was very enjoyable but the overall breakfast selection was probably no more than you'd find in a good inn with rooms. The bar is a cosy place to enjoy a drink and the selection of wines was reasonably priced for a place like this. TBH, the room was a little disappointing. Certainly it was a good size, but the space hadn't been capitalised upon. A roll top bath in the bedroom is a thing which some people really like, but there was no wardrobe and no comfortable chair in the room. So personally I'd sacrifice the bath for better use of space. Don't get me wrong, I knew it had the bath when I booked, I just didn't know it was missing a wardrobe and somewhere to sit and relax. That said, the bathroom itself was not without issues. The shower was very small and had a rainforest shower head. Unfortunately, it had no closing door, so the wooden floor got pretty wet every time it was used. Staff were all very friendly and attentive and certainly made us feel welcomed and well looked after. So how would I summarise? Actually, it's not that easy. I think if we'd just come for dinner we'd have been perfectly happy. However, we live quite close by and decided to stay as a birthday treat and I found the accommodation a bit below the standard I would expect at this price point. Maybe I'm being too picky? Maybe if you live in a city and are looking for a country house hotel you would see more quirkiness than shortfall? Because our room was definitely not bad, but to me, a little bit of redesign would pay huge dividends. The Rectory has many things going in it's favour; it's an attractive building, with beautiful grounds in a quiet village. Food, service etc. are very good. We just found our room, unexpectedly, a slight let down.

I've eaten here on a few occasions over the years, and on each occasion the staff have been very friendly and helpful. However, on a visit in September 2024 we found that: The monkfish was overcooked and rubbery, while the rice was tepid and virtually tasteless; The single slice of roast beef was as tough as old boots and could probably have run out the door, and the accompanying roast potatoes tasted as if they'd been prepared the day before and re-heated. Hopefully the chef was just having a bad day, but my suspicion is that culinary expertise has left the building. (Finally, beware of a 10% service charge being added without prior notice.)

Met family here for a lovely relaxing weekend stay. The rooms were spacious, clean and homely - a refreshing change from the sterile rooms of larger chains. All of the staff were friendly, happy and relaxed which really made our stay enjoyable. Nothing seemed too much from providing alterbative milks at breakfast to lending us playing cards in the evening. Breakfast and dinner were superb - top quality, delicious food, relaxed atmosphere and excellent service. The hotel also has many rooms to relax in after dinner and beautiful outside areas including the sunny pool area (but bring a rash vest in case the sun isn’t out when you visit!) We had dinner on the second night in the Potting Shed pub owned by the hotel. Slightly more informal dining, but the same quality of food and service. We Will definitely return!

Visited for a Saturday lunch and was not disappointed. The place itself is super tranquil. Really beautiful old building with loads of places to sit and eat/drink. We sat in the orangery which I’d defs recommend. Food was insane. We started with courgettes, meatball, and the turbot terrine which was all delicious. And good portion sizes. Then treated ourselves to a lobster main. Washed down with a white soave wine. Very norty. Staff were really friendly and had a nice little wander round afterwards - gardens then the adjoining church. Smashing stuff all round.

The restaurant was packed busy, not a spare table in the conservatory or the rooms leading into it; and we had perfect service all night from Abby, she was terrific. The food is immense here, and the atmosphere was amazing. Great vibe, cool place. We ticked into three chicken dishes, two beef sirloins, and I even had the ravioli starter with my main course (no one else wanted a starter, what can I do!). The creamy potato side was delicious. Cornish Earlies. Never heard of them, went down a treat. It was an all-round 5-star evening, and that includes the puddings - millefeuille, ice creams and cheeses. Thanks to the Rectory for a great night!

We stayed three nights at the Rectory and would come back in a heartbeat. Most of the clientele seemed to be British couples on holiday, but it was a great spot for our girls trip, too. The Rectory served as an excellent home base for our driving around the Cotswolds. The vibes here are excellent. It’s quiet, but the pool, study, gardens, as well as the pub across the road, provide lots of space to spread out and take advantage of. The cocktail and wine lists are lovely, and the bartenders are very friendly. The restaurant is out of this world. One of us had pasta, the other bream, and we both loved it. Our room was at the top of the hotel, and our only complaint was that there was no fan on very hot days, which would have been a real relief. To be fair, though, we didn’t bother to ask if they happened to have one. Nevertheless, five stars.

Stayed overnight for a beautiful wedding. Staff could not do enough for us all. Bedroom was so beautiful, quirky features (roll top bath in the room), sumptuous bathing products, special selection of teas and coffee, fabulously comfortable bed, amazing views (room 9). We did have an amusing gurgle from the bath at the most unexpected moments, but honestly, in a boutique hotel in a stunning setting, it's really OK!

Finally a lady took our names and show us to our table, from then forward all went to perfection. Great attentive staff, food was divine and the atmosphere in the conservatory was inviting. We had the set lunch menu for 36£ each plus the drinks. I think was well worth it and will definitely come to stay. The place is beautiful and perfect also to celebrate special birthdays. I honestly am not usually a difficult customer however I am forced to write this negative review. What could have been a nice stay was ruined by the fact that we had no hot water for a whole weekend. While I understand this is out of the control of the hotel staff, to be offered a £50 refund when we have spent £700 at the hotel is insulting. I wish I could recommend this place but I really can’t with customer service like that. Hot water is a basic amenity and certainly what would be expected in a luxury hotel. We did not feel at all luxurious when we couldn’t wash for a whole weekend! We were only offered a refund after having to really ask for one which was embarrassing and awkward. Really disappointed after saving for a long time to come and visit this hotel. I’d recommend going elsewhere.

Woeful customer service following no hot water. The Rectory is a lovely hotel. That is until things go wrong. Booked a room with roll top bath £300 - Arrive to no hot water (and no bath) limited hot water the following morning. Was offered £90 as compensation. Sadly the experience was completely ruined. After all this hotel sells experience rather than just rooms. Im not sure the girl on the front desk really understood that.

We came here on the back of a recommendation which proved to be a mistake, judging by our experience of many Cotswold establishments. Upon arrival, no one greeted us which didn't bode well, so had a chance to look around the reception area. As there was no sign outside, we were beginning to have our doubts that we had actually arrived but knew this must be the place. The interior treatment of the restaurant is lovely with a Modernist twist and has views of the garden. A starter of Orecciette Venison ragout was acceptable although the pasta was a little dense and stodgy and the sauce had nothing to offer. Mains of Seabass with mussels and a Gremolata sauce was dreadful: the plate was very hot, as was the awful oily/buttery broth-like sauce that was certainly not gremolata, despite it containing the requisite ingredients that are in said sauce, namely parsley, lemon zest, garlic, etc. The result was a rather over-cooked small fillet of fish and 3 overcooked mussels. There seemed to be no option for sides on the menu which we would have liked. A desert of Creme Brulee and winter fruits was woeful - more like an over-sweet creme caramel, served stewed fruit - it reminded me of school! On another note, the waitress served our food wearing a food-splattered apron which was a little off-putting. The descriptions of dishes on the menu rather raises ones hopes but it doesn't live up to it and we left feeling disappointed.

We had heard so much about The Rectory and being devoid of our youngest decided to revisit parts of Cotswolds South, around Tetbury and Cirencester, where we used to live. The welcome was strange. As others have written, signage is not obvious. Front of house was cold - perhaps we were going to get in the way but we didn't feel that welcome. Room appeared nice of which more later. We went for a walk around the grounds - adjacent to the church hence the name of the hotel. We did wonder if the hotel had been a school? Some of the layout felt as if the building had been reimagined from another use?? We dressed for dinner - other diners were a mix of smart to very casual. Pre dinner drinks were taken in the lounge. The atmosphere was distinctly chilly - others commented on this too. But the heating was soon turned on and extra logs added to the fire. Dinner - taken in the conservatory - was good for carnivores, less good for veggies/vegans. On heading up to bed it was clear that the warning in the hotel bedroom welcome guide as to the old nature of the building was spot on. There is quite a lot of noise given the creaks from old timbers and people moving about above and below. Things did settle down eventually as other guests headed to bed. Breakfast was very good. Overall, not bad but not as super as some other reviewers think. But then again, takes all kinds to make a world go around!!

The family were looking forward to enjoying a remembrance Sunday lunch for my Mother in Law, We received a warm greeting and were seated by a window with a beautiful view of the garden. I will not write war and peace as the saga and experience that followed cannot be imagined, Firstly the meals were beautifully presented and truly delicious, we enjoyed the meal despite incompetence of front of house. In brief -1) It took considerable time for the drinks order to be taken. 2) We were asked some time later if we were ready to order the food, the waiter was reminded that we still had not received the drinks, with apologies these were brought to the table and the good ordered. 3) I was told that someone would bring a spoon for my starter, after a while as the waiters were not ‘reading’ the room I had to leave the table and ask for the spoon. 4) One of the mains brought to the table was incorrect, I was challenged but eventually the correct meal was brought ( much later the waiter who took the order acknowledged his mistake and apologised. I will stop there as I am sure you have lost the will to live, imagine how we felt on the day. Once we resolved some incorrect bill issues including the service charge, we left and sadly I cannot see my family returning or indeed recommending The Rectory. A final point, please ensure that menus are proof read before printing…..spelling of strawberry and rhubarb incorrect, attention to detail and customer experience in thi type of establishment IS important.

Sunday was disappointing. The waitress was friendly and the conservatory welcoming. However we all found it rather pretentious. The descriptions of the dishes on the menu were quite convoluted and not comprehensive enough, and some were misleading. The starters were mediocre, and The venison was good, but the pork described merely as Heritage Pork, was very fatty with little, if any, edible meat, and resembled pork belly, Both who had this dish were not at all impressed. On being asked by a waiter how the meals were we told him of our disappointment, showed him the large amount of fat meat left, and he assured us that our comments would be passed on to the chef for feedback which has not happened. We were all very disappointed

We were staying with friends in nearby Baverston and they had booked dinner at the Rectory although they had not been recently. It appears that a new chef, Rob, came from the Michelin starred La Trompette in Chiswick at the turn of the year. His influnence has certainly created an attractive menu with some dishes proving exceptional. We all had the Devon Crab Linguine with preserved lemon, chilli and parsley as the starter at £17. each. It was beautifully cooked and presented with the chilli sufficient to offer some heat without destroying the subtle flavours of fresh crab. Most opted for the Turbot dulse with shrimp butter, mussels and jersey royals for £33. The fish was firm flesh yet cooked to perfection and the sweet parsley s.uce was so good that spoons were demanded. I had the Iberico Suckling Pig with fresh borlotti beans, fennel and artichoke for £32 - another culinary triumph of ultra moist tender flesh under some crisp crackling. However, the stellar dish of the evening was the Rhubarb and custard crumble souffle at £10 which was definitely to Michelin standards - take note Inspectors please!! We drank a delicious organic sauvignon blanc from New Zealand at £39.00 plus a large galss of Montepulciano red at £10.50. Two things i especially liked about the evening were the bread basket with warm crusty homemade sourdough provided without charge and the service charge of just 10%. This was a superb dinner prepared and cooked by a chef at the top of his game with a total price of £327.80 offering great value - in our opinion.

Our first visit to this hotel restaurant, and our high expectations from press reviews were totally surpassed. Our table was in the airy conservatory - a lovely atmosphere, animated yet well spaced; service was friendly, welcoming, efficient. I chose an autumnal celeriac/pumpkin/smoked ricotta/pomegranate warm salad to start, followed by a fantastically moist roast Guinea fowl with quince. My other half had short rib tortellini, then a rich and flavourful lamb with smoked potatoes. ALL our food had really imaginative flavours and they worked so well. It felt very special indeed. Beautifully decorated hotel, with brilliant staff and delicious food. Also a large drinks menu including cocktails. Perfect romantic hotel with comfortable bedrooms and a gorgeous bar and restaurant to relax in the evening. There is also a lounge with roaring fire place where you can sit and read or play a board game. The breakfast is also amazing with a help yourself table full of cereals, pastries and fruit as well as the option of ordering a hot breakfast. We enjoyed going for walks in the nearby fields and then enjoyed a pint at the potting shed pub next door. We cannot wait to come back for another relaxing couple of days in the future! We spent one evening at The Rectory Hotel with our two labradors and were delightfully surprised by the quality and service at this lovely hotel. I made the booking last minute and was informed that the room that they had available was on the small side. However when we arrived, we were shown to a very comfortable size room that accommodated two dog beds and a super king bed very easily. It had a dual aspect on to the gardens. We were able to take our dogs into the bar for a drink before dinner. After this we headed across the street to their sister property, The Potting Shed pub where we had an excellent meal. We were told at the hotel that dogs are permitted in the sitting room but not the dining room (an understandable policy). However they were incredibly thoughtful and offered to set up a special table for us in the attractively decorated sitting room to have breakfast with our dogs the following morning. We dined the next morning with our dogs at a lovely table next to the fire. The service throughout was attentive and excellent. So many hotels claim to be "dog friendly" when in fact they are really only "dog tolerant" and very restrictive about the rooms that dogs may have access to. The Rectory Hotel is in a league of it's own and understands that if people wish to travel with their dogs, they want to spend time with them rather than leaving them confined to a guest room.

The Rectory is a huge surprise. I booked for new year, a table of 4 with no expectations. We eat at the potting shed fairly regularly but have never tried the sister establishment. Dinner was absolutely delicious and I could not fault it. Understated and fabulous. It was a set menu and all of of us left purring and satisfied. I am not sure about the rooms but if they are anything like the downstairs they will be comfortable and tasteful. The staff were brilliant throughout the evening and again could not be faulted. Thank you for a great start to 2020.

We have just returned from a night in this gorgeous hotel and having stayed in a variety of others, this really impressed us and we have re booked. Set in the most beautiful grounds next to the Church, it is everything a country house hotel should be. Roaring log fires in beautiful lounges, perfectly appointed individual bedrooms, delightful and attentive staff. Breakfast was served ( 7.30 - 10.30 - so nice not to have to rush) in the orangery. A feast of home made delights with drinks to help yourself to a “Bloody Mary” or Bucks Fizz. Dinner on the night of arrival was across the road in their pub “The Potting Shed“. Super setting/staff and amazing well priced food. We cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

I organised a 70th birthday celebration for my 'other half' last weekend. Everything about the experience was excellent. The front of house manager was well organised and efficient in the pre-planning. The pre-meal arrangements were superb using the bar and another reception room. The food (and associated drinks) was of the highest quality. The serving staff were also quietly efficient and friendly - and all this at what I consider to be a reasonable cost. In a sense, these words don't really do justice to the whole celebration provided by the Rectory. I would not hesitate to return.

Magnificent mansion, magnificent estate and superb room. In terms of quality, cleanliness of the infrastructure, nothing to complain about, everything is perfect, even more than perfect. A very nice touch in the room for my birthday with a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates. The breakfast is excellent, high quality and gargantuan. The bartender is also very professional, helpful and pleasant. On the other hand, the quality of reception and check-out could be improved. The welcome is not the warmest although professional. The staff at breakfast are very professional. However, one person was really very cold, bordering on unpleasant. For the quality and price of the hotel's services, it's a shame. The biggest disappointment was not being able to purchase the large Lionel the lion soft toy, which is in all the rooms and, which is in all the photos of the hotel. There's even a message attached to his neck, stating that he's for sale at the front desk. However, at reception, we are told that this is not possible, that only the intermediate format remains. When you advertise everywhere, when you promise your child to "adopt" him, and in the end, there are none left or none, I find it borderline unprofessional. Especially when you pay £600 for a night, the least you can do is make sure you find a solution for the customer

More style and price, than substance. Lovely setting, beautiful rambling walled garden with posh servers. But the restaurant food can be really bad! Bean dip (but called something much more lyrical, which I forget) was tasteless/ bland. Even I can just liquidise a tin of beans, and burn a carrot, but I season them properly and do expect much more for the prices. Much is made of local suppliers, and the meat dishes always seem to get better comments from my friends. The veggie food and deserts are expensive and not tasty, original or quality. If you are happy paying highly for meaty food, in a unique setting, then feel free. But I would avoid veggie and vegan (and probably the deserts).

This is fairly local to us and we decided to have an early evening birthday dinner. Even at 6 on a Monday it was pleasantly busy creating a nice atmosphere. Service was prompt and friendly and there was a good range of real ales on offer including 3 kegs of guest beers. Food choice was exceptional to the point of making it hard to decide which of several options to choose. When it arrived the food was extremely good and well presented. All in all a very good experience.
