The White Horse in South Somerset

The Sunday roast platter was, hands down, the best roast I’ve ever eaten. The whole family commented how good it was. Staff were very friendly, even suggesting local walks and pub/ restaurant is dog friendly.

Very characteristic old English pub but with food worthy of a top London restaurant.

First time visiting and must say that the Sunday roast sharing platter was absolutely delicious, as was the crème brûlée. However while we were trying to enjoy our desserts the hovering of the waiting staff was completely off putting. The table was cleared immediately the dessert spoon hit the table when munching on the last delicious mouthful. No time to digest! Didn’t have time to take a breath before being asked to swop places with people waiting for a table. Of course we accommodated this request but bearing in mind we had reserved our table in advance, arrived on time and had been there little over 60 minutes in total, this felt quite disrespectful and spoilt the overall experience.

We were in the area and booked lunch with relatively short notice. Having never been before we were all very impressed and so glad we did. Great food, great service and a lovely country pub. If we lived closer, The White Horse would quickly become our regular. We even spoke about visiting the area again, simply to come back here!

We went on a recommendation for the Sunday roast and WOW, we were not disappointed. You definitely need to book. Place is small but it is fabulous. The Sunday sharing roast platter was out of this world, beef pork an chicken all cooked to perfection. Yorkshire and roast potatoes to die for and home made horseradish sauce was really tasty. A good mix of veg and the cheese sauce on the cauliflower I couldn't have made better myself! there are not enough stars for this place. Shame there are not more Sundays in the week 😋 Be good to the chef theyre a keeper lol

Oh it’s really good. We went twice, once for a standard Saturday night fish & chips then again for the infamous Sunday roast. Sunday Roast at The White Horse: Expectations vs. Reality We visited The White Horse with high expectations after reading several positive reviews, and other family members having a wonderful midweek evening meal. Unfortunately, our experience was somewhat inconsistent, although there were certainly moments of enjoyment. The meal started with a slight mix-up in our drink orders, understandable as the staff seemed to be in training and normally not even note worthy. The highlight was undoubtedly the dessert, which was delicious and a high point of the dining experience. The staff were also quite friendly, which added a nice touch to the atmosphere. However, the main course didn’t fully meet our expectations. I admit unlike some people we have a love of gravy….. and our request for extra gravy was initially met with two small servings, maybe enough to enjoy a shot of gravy but not for the plate, and some what watery in comparison to the gravy served with the platers. Part of the beef, was requested well-done, it was tough and chewy. Additionally, the lack of child-sized dessert options seemed like a missed opportunity to accommodate families and potentially increase revenue. Considering the price, I felt the overall value didn’t quite match the quality and quantity of food provided, particularly the vegetable selection. While I’m not eager to return immediately, I wouldn’t be opposed to another visit if it were suggested. I hope The White Horse can address these inconsistencies, as there’s potential for a more fulfilling dining experience that aligns with the positive reviews already received.

The staff were very attentive , accommodating ( we have 2 toddlers) , and friendly we could not fault it . Im glad we booked as they called back to say we left a changing bag , where would we be without that!! We shared the platter for 2 and the food was insane! i could have had a whole bowl of the pork with that dirty mash it was sooo good. If youre staying anywhere within 15 miles of this place its def worth the trip if youre a foodie.

The White Horse was recommended to us by a local family member, to host a small gathering. The welcome was warm and the buffet hit the spot. The service from Rebecca was perfect.

First time visiting the place even though I've lived in the area for years and now I'm kicking myself I hadn't been before. Such a cosy ambiance, absolutely delightful staff who were attentive but not overbaring. They were knowledgeable and very helpful to accommodate dietary requirements. The menu was versatile and very reasonably priced. Food was absolutely gorgeous, especially the black bream dish, probably best I've had in a long time. Thank you for a great dining experience, I will definetly be visiting again.

Sunday lunch perfection. Been here several times and it never fails to please. Yummy meats and I love the roasted beetroot the potatoes always crispy and the carrots deliciously sweet. Couple that with wonderful service and pristine cleanliness and you get a 5 star from me and hubby. Dog friendly too tho we didn't bring our naughty little terrier this time

Visited this evening for a family birthday and incredibly impressed with the standards. Food all excellent, service excellent, would recommend to anyone. Bringing a candle out on birthday girls’ dessert was a nice touch! Thank you for a lovely evening.

Had main course of risotto which was fantastic. Wife had a steak which was equally fantastic. Daughter thoroughly enjoyed her burger. Couldn’t tell if the passion fruit panacotta wobbled due to the serving dish but it tasted wonderful so i couldn’t have cared less (although i would guess that it didn’t :-).

Came across the White Horse whilst travelling to Somerset and seeking a refreshment stop. Couldn't have been luckier. Although Pub was very busy and fully booked (which is a good sign) we were met with a warm and friendly manner. We explained that we were only passing and were looking for light refreshment and they demonstrated excellent flexibility in accommodating the 2 of us. Food nicely presented and service by everyone was first class. If I lived closer would definitely return and may even divert on return journey to do so

We had an amazing meal in their little courtyard,it was really fresh and all homemade,the land lady let us stay abit longer and finish our coffee ,one of the best meals we've had ,thank you.

One of the best restaurants near us. The greeting is always consistent with a large smile and a warm welcome. A relaxing environment is produced for all customers whether eating alone or in a group. No piped music just a background hum of people talking, engaging with one another. I may be biased by the food. I come mainly to enjoy the soft Scotch egg. This time my wife and I shared the chacuterie. The meats were salami, chorizo and jamon all tasty melt in the mouth. My wife had the chicken while I elected the Scotch egg with new potatoes for a main. The chicken was moist and flavoursome. Scotch egg on a bed of mash and a covering of chutney. All delicious. We accompanied the meal with a syrah, grenache, and merlot red. Not regular sweeties but we went for the creme brulee and an apple and rhubarb crumble with a scoop of vanilla. A bonus was that the servers are willing to engage authentically in conversation if desired. Do try this local gem. You will not be disappointed if you enjoy treating yourself now and again. We will definitely be back most likely with friends next time to share the experience.

Tremendous gastro pub set in the village. Just enjoyed a fantastic shared roast platter of beef, chicken and pork. Beef was cooked medium rare and the pork was melt in your mouth. Well done to all the team there

You're not going to get a better roast dinner anywhere in Somerset. We had succulent chicken, pork, beautiful rare beef, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings, and gravy.

Superb food and service in a traditional country pub. Dishes are imaginative without being of the 4 pomegranate seed school of cooking. Arancini and scotch eggs are memorable. Risotto was delicious on our last visit. BSubday lunch, burgers and fish and chips very good too. Guest draft beers.

Great sharing roast on a Sunday.

One of our favourite spots, we always try to fit a visit to The White Horse when we're in the area. We love this pub: great service, warm atmosphere and wonderful food. I had the cod dish last night and my husband had the chicken, both were delicious. Needless to say, we'll be back! Thanks to Rebecca, Richard and team for another lovely evening.

Wild garlic and broccoli soup to die for (and yes, it was a gamble to choose it but one that paid off brilliantly). Moist fish. Tasty and varied veg. Beef so good I never got a bite. All this and really friendly, efficient service. Need to go back soon as the vegetarian risotto with celeriac and hazlenuts looked tempting.

We have been coming to the White Horse for the last 12 years. After a hiatus we returned as Mother and Son for a well deserved evening out as Dad was away. The food continues to awe us; the fish was moist and full of flavour, the burger the best he’s had in ages. As always Rebecca and Diane, as front of house, met us with a smile and a kind word. The standards have been consistently great over the years and this is down to teamwork and a love of what they do. We’ll be back soon. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Love this place! The food is fantastic. When we can we always come here for our treat Sunday roast and it is incredible. Last night we had the fish and it was amazing! Delicious and well presented. And the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Also must add a pint of Poretti is always enjoyed! Totally recommend and lucky to have this pub/restaurant so close to home.

We returned to The White Horse after a really poor meal many months ago. I am sorry to say that this was equally awful. Overcooked fish, dry and tasteless, chicken on a tepid plate with nondescript goo passing as sauce. Burnt sauce potatoes. I wish the chef and his wife would bear it in mind that people do t have money to burn these days on bad food. It was simply awful. We will not be either recommending or returning.

Amazing Sunday lunch - we got the roast sharing platter, the chicken was so succulent and tasty, the pork belly was melt in the mouth, and all the sides were just beautiful - I could have eaten a vat of the cauliflower gratin.., Shame it’s not my local, but what a treat to have found on a little holiday ♥️

Friendly relaxed atmosphere created by a close team who enjoy their job. The food is a flavour experience, every mouthful tasted wonderful, it is clear that the Chef and his team both care and enjoy producing delicious dishes. Has become our go to Xmas location, this being our second year, and whilst they remain producing food to this level and we remain physically able, we will enjoy many more.

We had an excellent meal. Started with charcuterie board which was perfect for three of us. We then all had the hake which was superb. Beautifully cooked. Rebecca worked so hard … front of house/drinks/waitress..always with a smile. Puddings were lovely. Overall experience was 100%….sort of don’t want to share this wonderful place with anyone!!

We were staying in the next village and The White Horse was recommended. During our 2 weeks in Somerset and Devon we ate at many pubs and had great meals but this one was the best. We liked it so much we ate here again the next day. The care and attention put into each dish is evident in the taste and presentation. Friendly service cannot be faulted. Highly recommend.

Had an amazing Sunday Lunch here today. We chose the sharing platter so had a mix of roast beef, pork snd chicken all succulent and cooked to perfection. Served with lovely crunchy roast potatoes, and the remaining veg were equally superb. Roasted beetroot but somehow nicer than mine. Tastiest carrots, cabbage and cauliflower cheese. More than we could eat. Served promptly and hot to the table. I have to say it’s one of the best roasts I’ve ever had.

Lovely small pub with amazing food & friendly staff, I would definitely recommend! The only reason I can’t give 5 stars is because the parking situation isn’t great.

What a find. We showed up as a party of 25 ish with 4 well-behaved and sociable dogs and including lots of children at 2pm on a sunny Saturday, having walked across the fields from our campsite. We should have booked, but fortunately we were post-lunch rush. The team accommodated us easily, and the kitchen turned out fabulous food in impressive time, considering the number of us. It was idyllic, the service was great, and we felt very lucky to be there. I hope this pub goes from strength to strength. Please seek it out, in this beautiful village and part of the world (and don’t be like us, do the kitchen a favour and book!)

More like a Michelin star restaurant without the prices. Staff were very accommodating and relaxed. The food.... Omg the food!!!! All food is cooked from scratch, even the brioche buns for the burger! The flavours are immense! Outstanding presentation. Beautiful garden to enjoy their finest wines. We loved it so much we booked in for the next evening! Well done team!

Do not be put off by the absence of thatch and olde worlde style, this is a a really good village pub with a very pretty garden. We had Hake which was perfectly cooked, delicious, and a proper home made burger with first class chunky chips. A little focaccia with a delicious and interesting home made hummus to keep us going for the few minutes wait for our food. Excellent hot coffee. We will be returning when next near Crewkerne!

We are returning customers to the white horse….it never disappoints! Fab food (especially the steak) and great service. It was a warm evening when we visited, so we also got to enjoy a drink in the lovely garden. We will keep returning!

We were last here a year ago and had a fantastic meal but not so this time. Whilst the staff are all lovely quality has taken a purler and we were clearly given the impression to eat up as fast as we could. Now I wouldn’t say I like waiting for the food to come, this time it arrived within a couple of minutes of ordering and before we had time to get a pre lunch drink. And then the portions of meat were TINY , the pork being 3 cubes about the size of an ice cube, the chicken a chunk of chicken breast and the beef was only so-so. Mind you the shortage of meat was make up by an overload of vegetables. So overall nothing like it was last time and at £18.95 overpriced.

I gave the Whitehorse a rather bad review and they were very apologetic and invited us back. They must have had an off day with us because today was outstanding. A warm welcome, great table (9 of us) and excellent friendly service. Charcuterie starter was spot on, served with crisp, warm bread. The Sunday lunch was great. Proper cut meat, excellently cooked, veg with a crunch and great Yorkies. 10 out of 10. Will be going back.

This is one of our favourite places to eat. We come here for Sunday lunch, for birthday dinners, when friends are over, or just when we want to have good food. The food is always great, the service is excellent, and the pub is always welcoming. You will not be disappointed.

Our second visit to this pub was slightly disappointing, the food was up to standard but we were continually rushed by the waitress despite asking her to slow down.

Sunday Sharing Platter to die for! Each time we visit this area from Oxford we book in and it never disappoints ⭐️ Gorgeous pork belly with crackling, moist chicken breast and rare beef with the lightest Yorkshire puddings, roast beetroot, cabbage, carrots, gravy and incredible tartar sauce. The sticky toffee pudding was incredible as was the icecream with hot chocolate sauce. Service was helpful, kind and attentive

Had a delicious lunch today sitting under the shade of a tree in the garden. Home made burger and triple cooked chips with chipotle mayo. Delicious. Followed by apple and rhubarb crumble with vanilla ice cream. Crunchiest crumble topping I've ever had. Yum. Excellent service, lovely surroundings. Will definitely go again

A gastro pub serving amazing food. We had belly pork which was really tasty, masterchef territory. Chicken breast and hake and chips, both done to perfection. Veg and potatoes very good. Portions generous, too. Can't comment on the beer but the scrumpy cider was good. Nice Chilean merlot too. Desserts excellent, especially the chocolate terrine. Dog friendly with attentive and friendly staff and prompt service. Only 5 parking places but it's possible to park on the narrow lane nearby at a pinch.
