Great service, friendly atmosphere

I can't thank you enough for accomidating myself and grandson and his wife after having to phone and change the time. I was also very grateful for the slimming g world potatoes and parsnips.....full marks all round and would definitely recommend.

Very friendly service, great pint, pie and mash was outstanding Made another visit. Great prompt service again. Good food. Staff are excellent, dog friendly, would recommend.

Stopped for carvery by chance after shopping, and the staff were very helpful. They fitted us In last minute. Carvery was the best we've had in a long time. Very hot and cooked to perfection . A wide selection and all well presented . The staff were very friendly . Will definitely be back . Thank you K and M 😀

Food has massively improved since our last visit!

Went there on Sunday lunch with friends. Can not describe how fascinating I was by the staff. I am very impressed by the young people working at the restaurant. They were all very kind and polite,very smiley . Honestly I am just speechless. To the attention of the management - you have an amazing team. One big thank you and well done.

We’ve visited many times over the years and always had lovely food. We also tried the pizza in the summer. We visited recently and I had the version burger, it was amazing, one of the best if not the best burgers I’ve ever had!

Spotted the good reviews on line and by chance stopped off by chance when passing. Luckily we managed to get a table for lunch today weds 16th October. We were greated with by a very friendly memeber of staff and managed to get us a table , after having an enjoyable meal I wanted to do this review to show our aoppreciation. All the staff were extreamly friendly, polite and really looked after you and they couldn't have done better. I noticed how this was not just with us but with every customer going above and beyond the normal service you get! I highly commend their attitude and service it made the visit that extra special! A very large menu as well as a specials board to choose from that would cover anyones tastes and it is at good affordable prices. As are the drinks. Our food plates and even the tea cups were warmed correctly and the food came pippimg hot; again a rareity now it seems, so again full marks. It was busy for mid-day so I would recommend book in advance, just in case. Service of our meals was a bit slow in arrivaing but considering we hadn't booked and it was so busy we deemed it as ok and acceptable. Lastly a a good size car park and one to visit again!

Great visit to meet with friends. Booking a table was easy using the ‘ Open Table’ system. Greeted with warm welcome from staff. Service was excellent & our orders dealt with expediently. Good & varied choice of menu, with attention to detail for those experiencing food intolerances/ allergies. All food reasonably priced & presented very attractively. Nice ambience. We did not sit outside, but the outside seating area is also attractive , with plenty of seating, & decorated with beautiful outdoor lighting. Large amount of free parking & situated near station.

We popped in to find it was extremely busy but was met by very friendly staff and there was room for us two. Delicious food and piping hot. Fantastic friendly service,thank you. We will definitely be back 😀

Visiting family from New Zealand. Heard this place was good to eat. Booked a table for last night, kids menu was great and my children enjoyed the food. Adults meals, cocktails and wine all very good, generous portions. The waiting staff were attentive and helpful. Well oiled machine indeed. Thank you ☺️

Went for lunch. Advised by locals to go here as we had two pet dogs with us. Ourselves and the dogs we're made very welcome. For a donation dogs can play with a supply of dog toys and have a treat. Food excellent and service brilliant.

Bad news first. Took nearly an hour from order to starters arriving. However, we knew they were busy as they just squeezed us in. Other than that, no complaints. All food was delicious as always. Highly recommended.

Excellent food and brilliant staff. How nice to be met at the door and shown to a clean table(rare these days) . Food was reasonably priced and well prepared and presented. Waiting staff are superb, they are super polite and smile , they are a credit to the business. Well done pen mill.

The restaurant was lovely, staff are very helpful and friendly. The menu is wide and I can confidently say best steak I have had for years. Its a traditional pub, wide range on Tap and lots of ciders!

The food was good quality and well cooked, it was service with a smile from the minute we walked in. I would highly recommend the Pen Mill for an evening meal.

Lovely place for a few late night drinks and snacks with the family. Lovely staff including Amelia who was always up for a chat and carried a calm and bubbly atmosphere always with a smile; making sure we had everything we needed.

I booked a table in the restaurant for evening meal. They were very busy but fitted us in. Service was excellent despite being choc a bloc with customers. The menu is extensive with good veggie options and reasonably priced. All in all a great experience.

Food is great, soft drinks on the expensive side but can't fault the helpfulness of staff or the quality of the food, we will be back again soon.

All staff very pleasant and helpful. It was quite busy, we had booked a table online. Our two meals steak and gammon came quickly. My steak was cooked perfectly. This time the three onion rings were a lot smaller.

Just popped in with my mother. We only had two soups of the day and two drinks. The service was good, the soup was good. However, my bread was slightly frozen. I used the hot soup to warm it up. But it was a bit disappointing. Apart from that, good.

We had a lovely time over 7 days .Everyone of the staff were excellent and couldn't fault them. Loverly food cooked to perfection. Made sure my allergy was looked after and that I had the correct food. Local cider, excellent. Central to everywhere we went. Near a train station, Defernatly stay there again, without a doubt.

A superb hotel with fantastic staff - the food was beautiful.

Have to be honest, we were mildly disappointed. After hearing rave reviews, we thought we would try the Sunday Carvery. Very friendly staff and there was a wide selection of vegetables However, the roast potatoes were very rubbery and not crispy at all, the Yorkshire's, although giant, had no substance or flavour. Had we paid a little less for the meal then it would have been good value, but at this price, I expected better.

The service was first class, staffed with a number of very young waitresses who did an excellent job, we were more than impressed. On arrival we were shown directly to our table, gave our order for the drinks, which were swiftly served. We ordered the carvery absolutely spot on it was delicious. So to order a dessert was standard procedure and true to form it rounded of a perfect afternoon at the Penn Mill. Your staff are to be complimented for offering such a high standard of service.

So highly disappointed. my husband and i attended the establishment to enjoy a meal to be told that they can't guarantee nut free in any product including a bowl of chips. Never in 47 years have I encountered anywhere like it. If you can't even guarantee no nuts in a bowl of chips, that makes me question their kitchen safety

Food wasn't great, had salmon holonaise, salmon salty, eggs almost hard boiled and sauce not great for £11 but staff great and table service perfect.

Took my disabled mother to the Penn Hill today. The service was excellent from beginning to end. Asked for a table to suit my mother's needs when I booked and the table provided was excellent. The waiting staff were excellent always willing to help and they seemed genuinely keen to serve. Food was excellent - all in all a great experience

2nd visit here in recent weeks, both times were faultless, excellent service from very polite staff, superb quality food served up in good time.Good value all round. We will deinitely become regular visitors in the future.

Popped in one weekday lunchtime, very popular place for food. Staff very friendly and attentive. Chose from the 'meal deal' menu which consisted of main meal, dessert and tea/coffee. Another bonus - dog friendly! Very much enjoyed our meal.

Lovely carvery and very friendly staff

Best breakfast ever! My husband and I stopped for breakfast on a whim while passing and had a just lovely breakfast. The full English is stunning, fresh/hot and served with a smile. The coffee is PERFECT, and I’m not easily pleased so that means something. Worth ordering the toast rack on the side for the range of jams. Lovely chilled experience in clean cheery environment, all staff very helpful and professional. Don’t debate it, book breakfast here.

We were staying away in the area and lucky found this place because it’s dog friendly. It was that good we went out our way to visit again for dinner on the second night. Honestly 10/10 and I’m hard to please. Fantastic choice of food, some great locally sourced options. Can cater easily for more difficult eaters. Reasonably priced for quality pub grub. As far as dog friendly pubs go this is one of the best I’ve ever been too.

Ho avuto qualche difficoltà a trovare la giusta regolazione del calorifero. Ho cenato al ristorante e l'ho trovato molto buono, con un'ampia scelta di cibi. La cucina è aperta fino alle 9 di sera, amche in settimana.

Went here for a meal with family, booked a table in advance because there was a few of us, booking system worked very well, there is a full menu, the food was very good as was the attentive service, prices not to scarey either and as a bonus, dog friendly in the bar area Would recommend this place 😉

We came to stay on Friday 3rd November till the 6th, the staff were lovely and friendly, couldn’t do enough for us. The food was amazing always piping hot and delicious, the only thing I would say is the room and bathroom needed a lick of paint, but that didn’t stop us enjoying our stay. We would recommend this hotel 100% and we will be back.!!!

It's been a few years since we have been here for a meal & we'll definitely be coming back. Staff were lovely, all young girls. Very welcoming, pleasant & polite. Very attentive making sure we had everything we needed. The service was quick & the food was lovely. I had the special pie which was ham, leek & mushroom. It was served hot & very tasty with proper mash potato, seasoned beautifully. The tables were clean & even had a bottle of hand sanitiser there for our use. Drinks were delivered to the table. Toilets clean. Will certainly be coming back again.

Lovely meal for a family birthday for 5 people, waitresses were attentive to our allergies and friendly, food came out in good time and was perfect, no complaints all round. All had puddings too which were lovely. Great atmosphere, very clean and tidy, will be back soon.

No issues with the food that we had although I will say veggie options are poor! Two of us on the table,I told the waitress we were going to the restroom, only to find on our return that our desserts and drinks had been cleared and table reset! Whilst the waiter apologized we were not offered a replacement!!! Or a reduction on the bill

I have found the last 2 times I've eaten have been very disappointing , the prices are hiked but the quality less, Had a supposed bubble and squeak? Which I thought was mashed potato and cabbage/onion fried, more like a warm pile of brown mash. The egg was nicely cooked though. Very strange meal .

We ate here by chance and was so impressed. To be honest I don't really enjoy carveries. I don't like the queuing, and chaos if it all. But here I felt relaxed. You are given a card to go up to get your food. Only a few people at a time. The actual carvery area is small. But there was a great choice. I was able to take my time when filling my plate. The lady serving the meat deserves a mention as she was so polite and friendly. In fact all the staff were. You could tell they had good training. The restaurant itself was spotless and the chairs were really comfy. But most importantly the food was delicious. We will book again soon. We had a lovely time, thank you all

This was our second visit to Pen Mill Hotel. We both ordered sirloin steaks they were cooked to our liking, they came with Fantastic onion rings and mushrooms. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to go again.

This is without doubt our favourite restaurant. The food is exceptionaland is amazing quality and presentation. The staff are friendly, very attentive and professional. Sarah, the owner, is always so welcoming and chatty. We highly recommend this restaurant.

This was yet another stop over visit to the Penmill for us and we were not disappointed. The food , service and accommodation were top rate. Can recommend !

We had a 4 night stay at The Penn Mill while visiting friends . We couldn't ask for a more lovely Hotel. Having tried various others in Yeovil this was by far the best. The room was excellent, clean with everything you needed . With no problem entering late at night, which we had found with a few others. The staff were excellent very friendly and helpful. We also booked Sunday Lunch with our friends, which also was very good. When returning to visit our friends we will be booking there again.

Thank you for a lovely lunch in lovely setting. We visited here for their 3 meat local Sunday lunch and it was lovely and excellent Quality. Great selection of drinks and lovely garden. Staff attentive.

Having spent the weekend in Yeovil with friends we decided on a day out to Weymouth. We spent 3hrs there then got train back to Yoevil when we decided to stop at Pen Mill for a beer before heading back into town. After waiting more than 20mins AFTER ordering drinks a bar staff member asked us to leave because “ after 1 sip of beer we would be very drunk and troublesome”. We were 6 middle aged men who had met each other after 18month of restrictions. We weren't drunk, nor being rowdy. There were already a very rowdy and “troublesome “ crowd enjoying the sunshine inside and out. If your face fits you can drink there , if not forget it, management are prententious and obviously only allowing a “face fits policy”. I took my custom elsewhere.

Lovely hotel. We stopped for lunch on our way through Yeovil. It was buzzing, a very smart place. Staff all immaculate in white tee-shirts with badges and masks. Everyone was so friendly. It was extremely clean and all safety precautions were in place, without it feeling awkward or clinical. The food was delicious…the atmosphere great. We will definitely be back.

I stayed at the pen mill for a couple of nights with my family. This hotel was very clean and the staff were very kind and caring - there was always someone around if you needed something. The rooms however slightly basic and on the smaller side were very ‘covid safe’. The breakfast was very good - a wide range of choices available the only thing that was slightly lacking on their menu (both breakfast, lunch and dinner) were some vegetarian options. My daughter a pescatarian- felt the choices were very limited. The location is very nice - a short walk to the centre and very close to nine springs. Would recommend the food and the outside area has curb appeal - however in my opinion the inside looks slightly like a school canteen. The restaurant has good potential and the chef is fab!

My husband & I loved this pub for their carvery and were excited to return. We live half an hour's drive away so clearly thought it worth it. Obviously things are now difficult and food has to be plated but NOTHING could excuse the appalling food we were served. Our young waitress explained everything would be served separately, which was fine as I cannot manage a loaded plate and gave us a choice of meats (beef, turkey and pork); so far so good. I chose beef & one slice of pork, my husband asked for a mix of both. The food arrived quickly because it was all obviously languishing about in the kitchen since 12 noon (we had booked for 5.15p.m) The beef was warm, not hot, the pork was also warm, not hot, and very dry. The vegetables were frankly awful: we were advised cauliflower cheese was among the selection - it was not! Cauliflower was served with rock hard stems, no cheese sauce & alongside were frozen peas & sweetcorn, hardly any cauliflower. The potatoes were so overcooked I could barely cut them and the parsnips were the same. I had a rock hard ball of stuffing on my plate so altogether very poor. Other veg was mashed swede and carrots. When our first waitress came to check on us I told her how bad it was. She did ask if she should get someone; we said no but as we tried to eat more we thought we should have asked. Another young waitress at the end of our (unfinished meal) came to ask how things were, we again said how shocking the food was and asked her not to clear as I wanted to take photos of he food. We paid and left. As we got into our car front of house man ran over to us to apologise, said he had a new waitress (we had two) and he should have been advised of our unhappiness. Apparently cauliflower has "thick stems" at the moment and basically if we want pinker beef or fresher potatoes we should book early! Never again! Didn't bother with the photos in the end as they could not evidence the awfulness of the food.

After two previous nights in a chain hotel this place was a breath of fresh air. The rooms were clean and modern, Jon the owner managed the check in efficiently and the food and drinks were excellent. The menu was good honest British fare and with a sense of hesitation I ordered a ribeye steak. This was very nicely cooked as were the sirloins chosen by my colleagues. Breakfast was quick and efficient and everything was cooked to order and very tasty. A smart hotel with good beer and food, I couldn't ask for more.

Nice to be back (20th May) and we appreciated the attentive service we received from the excellent staff. (including the boss) Lovely food with both our steaks cooked to perfection. Prices were reasonable both for food and drinks. It is also obvious the improvements in decor and confirming to social distancing rules have helped create a pleasing environment.

Absolutely fantastic meal, went the for the first time as it was conveniently located. Would highly recommend to anyone for food.

Food and service was fantastic. Seemed Covid secure with table service etc. However it was obvious that households were mixing (against covid restrictions). I know this is difficult to manage but there was no checking if people are from same household. Even if they ask the question, they are showing due diligence. Other places we have visited are asking this and recording responses which shows good due diligence. They don’t need to provide proof but just asking is a good start.

Great food and great service as always. Shame the midweek carvery is not on at the moment but fully understand why. Thanks guys :)

The owner of the b&b my wife and I are staying at recommended the Pen Mill to us, and good advice it was. As soon as we stepped into this busy Hotel restaurant we knew it was special. We were immediately greeted by a friendly young lady and without having a reservation were quickly seated at a superb table for two by the window. The staff were extremely proffessional, friendly and efficient and it was clear that they genuinely enjoy their jobs. A breath of fresh air compared to many dining establishments up and down the country. Sunday roast was presented promptly and was simply the best we have ever experienced at any dining establishment. Piping hot and plenty of it. Meat was a quality cut and the veg was cooked just right.Whole place was immaculately clean. Covid regs were fully abided by, with automated registration of details, masks warn by all staff, and sanitiser spray in use everywhere - we felt very safe and looked after. We do not live locally but will return to the Pen Mill next time we are in the area and plan to stay over, too. Full credit to the management and the 'switched on' team for getting everything right and managing to overcome difficulties that Covid is causing for the hospitality industry, everywhere.

It had been a while since we had been able to arrange a visit to Somerset, and of course we elected to stay at the Pen Mill Hotel again. Where else?We hadn’t even been out to eat since before lockdown but we knew we could trust the Pen Mill Hotel management to ensure a safe environment for their guests, despite the difficulties of meeting the coronavirus-driven restrictions imposed on all of the hospitality sector. Everything we had enjoyed so much on past visits was not compromised - it was all well thought out and organised, and we felt totally safe. Cleanliness in both the rooms and public areas was as good. The full English breakfast was up to the usual extremely high standard on both days; on both evenings the dinner was great (glad to find that the carvery was back on our second night when we invited local friends to join us, with the necessary additional safety measures which are now required); despite the additional demands of the regulations to which they had to adhere, all of the staff members were as lovely and cheerful as we remember from past visits and just as efficient as always.Our congratulations to Jon* and Sarah* for not just meeting the new requirements, but creating an environment in which their guests could feel safe and comfortable. And as ever, we enjoyed seeing the lovely George*. (*this means that Jon will have to award a chocolate Hobnob and a Bonio - hope he doesn’t get those the wrong way round - not sure that Sarah will get a share of either!!) Slightly misquoting Arnie, “We’ll be back”!!

We had high hopes due to being a local place with good review ratings however our evening was far from acceptable and we can assure you that we won’t be returning unless there happens to be a change of ownership. We arrived to a prebooked appointment, saw hand sanitizer on the entrance and received a warm welcome. We were shown to our table and received complementary dog treats for our four legged friend. However we soon noticed the thick layer of dust in the pictures, the blinds, the scirting boards, windowsill and pretty much everywhere except the table and chairs. As we had someone who has an inhaler twice daily and someone who is going through chemotherapy this was far from comforting. However we decided to give the place a chance and believe in supporting local business. We continued in our evening placing our orders, but the food that arrived was what you’d expect from a microwaved prison meal. The pasta was dry and black ended around the edges and tasted of burnt pasta. The burger was again dry and blackened. It later turned out that the burger gave me food poisoning whereby I was unable to complete the 20 minute drive home and had to stop to vomit which continued long into the night and resulted in me missing my chemotherapy for the day. The service we received after raising our concerns with the food was what you’d expect from a certain south Asian dictator. The customers of this occasion were wrong according to the owner. The blackened food wasn’t burnt and wasn’t dry according to the owner. We were made to feel belittled and intimidated by the owner who but a short while ago gave us such a warm welcome. The owner didn’t propose to make amends choosing to instead argue with his customers in the middle of the dining room. We had hoped for at least an offer to send out a fresh pasta to replace the burnt inedible pasta we received but no offer was forthcoming. We paid full price for two meals and drinks which was far from an acceptable standard. We paid for an evening in unclean premises with customer service which was far below an acceptable standard. It goes without saying that we won’t be returning and have no interest in subjecting ourselves to further abuse or bullying from an unfit owner.

Impressed by how well everything has been handled here. I’m in hotels and eating out 3-4 days a week with work. Bar area and restaurant are very well managed and feel very safe. A big thanks to staff who made travelling about feel a good bit less stressful. Evening meals and breakfast was excellent too. A+

I was working in the area and thought ide try out the hotel for a nice meal looking at recent reviews it made sense, but my meal was very bad in quality, very dry and certainly not fresh. I’m amazed at the good reviews people clearly don’t know what fine dining is with good quality food. I won’t return ille spend my money elsewhere thanks.

Stopped in the pen mill yesterday for lunch with my wife and children. Our 1st time since the reopening and what can I say ,, wow please looks amazing and they have got the Covid rules down to a tee. Felt very comfortable and the staff where amazing. The food was stunning and we left very full and satisfied. Thanks to all at the pen mill keep up the great work .

The owners have done an excellent job here. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Covid regulations are fully compiled with in a thorough but relaxed manner)(if that makes sense). I had the best carvery I have ever had and at £13 is exceptional value. Plenty of parking. Easy to find so I strongly recommend that you do!

We stopped here for dinner on our way to the west country.A really pleasant surprise, with an imposing building and large car park, we were greeted at the door by a face shielded waiter with a very welcoming demeaner. We had booked and were quickly shown to our table.What struck us most was the teamwork shown by the front of house staff. They were young, clearly well managed and considerate to the customers which I esp appreciated as I have mobility issues.We both had the Sunday carvery which was not only more than ample but the quality of the food , esp the beef, was excellent.The whole experience was an absolute pleasure and from our experience I have no hesitation in recommending the Pen Mill to potential customers.Their attention to social distancing was good with controlled visits to the carvery and table orders.
