Called in on the way back from touring the Lakes. The gentleman behind the Bar gave a warm welcoming. The food was phenomenal, the Black Pudding Stack is out of this world for taste and a must Steak and Ale pie was one of the best I have had and my wife’s fish and Chips looked great too. Definitely would recommend and next time in the area will call in again Thanks for the hospitality

We stopped by for dinner on a cold Tuesday evening in January and were so glad we did! The best Fish and Chips we have had in a very long time. Excellent service! Couldn't fault a thing. The only thing I wish I'd noticed was the previous reviews mentioning how generous the portions were!

We came across this pub by accident when our car broke down on our way home to Newcastle following a trip to the Lakes. We mentioned this to the staff on arriving at the pub and we were made to feel so welcome! Adrian in particular made what was a very stressful experience much easier and had no issues with us waiting in the pub until we were recovered. The pub had a great atmosphere and was busy with people out for tea as well as having drinks. Thanks so much, we will definitely be back under better circumstances.

Update January 2025... steak pie still exceptional and the fire was so delightful. Rest of review from 2023... I had the steak pie with chips here and it was truly excellent. The chef must have reviewed the size of a cow and determined that a whole cow could not fit into a pie, however they have clearly stuffed as much delicious tender steak in between the thick crusty pastry as is physically possible. Onto the dessert. I'm not fussy about my dessert but I was very happy with the size and level of chocolate and cream in my fudge pudding. My mother on the other hand is exceptionally fussy about puddings, and even she sang the praises of the raspberry pavlova, which came with a forest of berries. Beverages - my wife and I had some very solid pints of cider and pale ale respectively Service - very cheerful staff Very cosy log fire! Great location for climbing blencathra.

Lovely pub about 15 mins from Blencatha, most tables were booked, but we managed to find a table. Prices, are on the higher side, so expect a meal for two costing around £45-£50 with drinks. I had beer battered fish and chips, huge fish and chips with mushy peas. I ate them, but found the fish etc rather tasteless. Partner had a chicken thing, she thought it was nice but vegetables tasted as if they were cooked in a sweet and sour spice. It's nice place to pop into, perfectly edible, just let down by some of the flavours and lack of taste.

The food was very nice but not much of it. we were really looking forward to a Sunday roast here after the great reviews. We were told wen we arrived they were running out only sirloin & pork left so to order straight away we ordered one of each & was feeling grateful we got there in time seeing the other people eating theirs we cudnt wait for ours to come after a big walk we were hungry. I got one small piece of pork the amout you wud give a child 3 small bites it was gone & the sirloin was not much more but at least abit more than the pork & one small bowl of veg between us it was a tiny amount i did ask if possible cud they spare abit more veg & he did in fairness say they didn't have much but he brought some, the food was delicious but for the price of just under £20 each we expected more we then ordered a desert cos we were still hungry the sticky toffee pudding was lovely & a generous potion as you wud expect. Our roast did not look like others we seen we shud have ordered something else from the menu. When they said they were running out, they were not kidding.

Thanks to everyone at the Bunkhouse which added to my recent visit to the Lakes. I chose the Bunkhouse firstly on price and a very close second for location (central to my planned walks and rides) The Bunkhouse surpassed my expectations; Clean and fully equipped with everything you need; Showers, toilets, fully equipped kitchen, separate dining area/room, outside seating... Plus other guests were quiet, chilled - all there for walking and enjoying the surroundings. Unfortunately (for me it would seem), I didn't eat at the pub but the smell from the kitchens as I walked passed daily to the car park made my mouth water!...Other guests in my room did eat at the pub and they all said the food is fantastic and you are missing out! I want to come back to this area of the Lakes and am planning a visit when it snows next and I'm sure I'll be stopping here and will be having some food 😋 Other guests I spoke with recommended the Sunday Roast and Home made Pie 🥧

Why does a hostel hide the fact linen is not included at booking. Nothing annoys me more than a booking like this that notifies you via email after booking that linen is not included. If I had know it was going to cost £23 include linen I would have booked another hostel nearby who charge £15 total including linen. Having a bold notice on the booking site NO REFUNDS tells me I'm not the first to feel deceived like this. Dont tell me on page 4 down the bottom in fine print it may say linen not included. If you can put NO REFUNDS in bold you can swap that for Linen not included. Hostels usually don't allow sleeping bags or travelers linen as they're an excellent way to transport bed bugs from one place to another. If a hostel has bed bugs, they can get on (or even into) your sleeping bag and can spread them to every other hostel where you use your bag after that.

Although an obvious victim of inflationary pressures, the food was satisfactory & piping hot. Sadly, the staff were cold, to the point of rude. In fact, they were just rude. One would hope that politely asking for some ketchup, some cutlery, or to change one of our meals 45 seconds after ordering would have resulted in warmer interaction than sarcasm, smugness & a couple of grunts. One would have been disappointed. The pub, usually the peak of my walk, was instead the trough.

We visited for Sunday lunch yesterday, and I can confidently say it was the worst meal I've ever eaten, accompanied by the worst service I've ever received. A notably rude staff member, a Scottish man with dreadlocks, was particularly off-putting. His demeanor was not suited to the hospitality industry; it was more akin to a military environment. He found fault with almost every customer who entered the pub, exhibited unwelcoming arrogance, and made us feel quite uncomfortable. The food, if one could even call it that, was simply inedible. It consisted of pre-cooked microwave meals that were, frankly, the worst I've ever tasted. Everything on my plate tasted the same, except for the gravy. We wanted to complain and leave without eating or paying, but I suspected that Scottish Lil Wayne would have reacted very poorly and would hate to cause such a scene. So, we merely shuffled the food around and fed most of it to our dog, who also refused to eat some of it, despite being a typically greedy Labrador. We wouldn’t come back here if we were paid. I may add, the bar staff were fantastic, I hope they find themselves a better place to work. I’m seeing recent 5 star reviews for this place and can only assume they’re paid for/bribed with free drinks.. because everyone around us was being served and treated the same as us yesterday.

Oasis in this region. But they need to rethink their approach to food as there was a revolving door of customers turned away because all tables were fully booked even though many bookings were in 2 hours time. I arrived at 6 most bookings seem to be for 8-8.30pm. Shouldn't really take 2 hours to order, cook and eat a meal or I could at least be given the choice to eat quickly or eat outside or at the bar.

We arrived for a booking we’d made earlier that day & were seated by the bar. After checking the menu we ordered fairly quickly but we immediately felt an unpleasant vibe from the waiter with the Scottish accent & dreadlocks. It was as though he didn’t want us or anyone in fact there, the most unwelcoming man that you could possibly place as your front of house. We ordered and my six year old niece proceeded to open her colouring book and colour whilst waiting for the food to arrive. The same man came over swiftly and told us they didn’t allow colouring in the pub in case it marked the table and told us to put it away… what the heck? Very, very strange. This made my niece cry unnecessarily. The food arrived and it was average, we had roast beef and there were two small pieces of beef that was a third fat. The meal was swimming in gravy and the Yorkshire pudding was like eating a pork scratching, hard as anything and pretty tasteless overall. The other waiters were also very off hand with not just us but anyone who tried to get a table or order a drink at the bar, and not one cracked a smile the whole time we were there. All in all it was supposed to be a pleasant sunday evening meal to round off our time in the lakes for a birthday weekend and we unfortunately couldn’t have chosen a more gloomy venue. I could elaborate more on the evening but I’ve had enough typing a review for this place and it’s miserable staff. Lighten up folks it may never happen!!

We booked a weekend stay here, from the outside and entrance it looks lovely however once you venture further in it's not the best, our room was quite dirty, had stains on the walls, ive stayed in better travellodge rooms for less money, we only stayed for 1 night and left to go home, upon arrival they take a £200 payment incase you charge anything to your room but we didn't use it and it took numerous phone calls and almost 1 month to get the money back, the food was nice but massively over priced, we paid for spa passes but they only gain you entry and swim, to get massages etc it costs an absolute fortune, it's definitely not worth the star grading it has, will not stay here again

This pub is full of character and a warm welcome. I immediately liked the menu when I saw the option of a ham and beetroot sandwich. Had a fabulous pint of Plum Porter. Friendly hosts and will definitely be returning after enjoying the beautiful scenery that the Eden Valley offers. The nearby Rutter Falls are the perfect combination.
