When booking in we were told our table is over there! Food was poor quality for the price, no avocado in the crushed avocado burger! No apologies from the staff when I mentioned it. In fact the response was 'oh' and walked away, no thank you when paying the bill, the staff are just rude!

Went for dinner tonight to save cooking, wish we hadn't, I've had better food from McDonald's, I got the burger which to me was expensive at £19.95 it was nothing special with not much taste, my wife got a blencathra mountain burger which the main ingredient was supposed to be crushed avocado. However, it came with 0 avocado and a tasteless pretend meat burger instead! Both dishes came with frozen chips and onion rings, for the price of it, I would of expected home made ones. Will not be returning and would not recommend. The staff are also not very friendly or helpful.

Thought we would stop on the way home from Buttermere... biggest mistake and waste of time. About 4 empty tables which we were told were booked by a waiter who was speed walking about and barely giving us the time of day. We asked if we could sit on the tables outside when he speed walked past again and have food, as there were about 6 empty picnic benches..."no food served outside" and sped past again. As we left dissapointed we noticed menu's, napkins, sauces and cutlery on the benches... Now.. if no food is served outside, why would they be there? The whole ordeal was very rude and shocking. I assume "outsiders" are not welcome so just a warning to those travelling to avoid. P.S To the speed walking man trying to look busy inside, I think you should learn some basic manners and understand that you are turning away ££ and giving the place a bad rep. Hope this review can help change that

I'd be giving it a 4.5/5 if possible... The food and service were both good, and it is a nicely renovated pub. The only thing is the prices are a little on the high side - tourist prices which is understandable with the location. Would definitely visit again, but don't expect a cheap bar meal! 15 years ago this pub did 'lunch portions' of the main menu meals for £6! Oh how times have changed. The quality has gone up though too for sure.

Stayed at the Bunkhouse. Tiny room for 4 people and two dogs. 'Cheap' - except we had to pay minimum of 3 nights on a bank holiday weekend. Uncomfortable mattresses. No washing up liquid in kitchen so people were just rinsing plates clean. No soap in the toilets. Not even replenished when kitchen and toilets were vaguely cleaned on Saturday morning. All looking a bit run down, smelt a bit like sewage outside. The heating worked; didnt bother with the showers. Left early.

Update January 2025... steak pie still exceptional and the fire was so delightful. Rest of review from 2023... I had the steak pie with chips here and it was truly excellent. The chef must have reviewed the size of a cow and determined that a whole cow could not fit into a pie, however they have clearly stuffed as much delicious tender steak in between the thick crusty pastry as is physically possible. Onto the dessert. I'm not fussy about my dessert but I was very happy with the size and level of chocolate and cream in my fudge pudding. My mother on the other hand is exceptionally fussy about puddings, and even she sang the praises of the raspberry pavlova, which came with a forest of berries. Beverages - my wife and I had some very solid pints of cider and pale ale respectively Service - very cheerful staff Very cosy log fire! Great location for climbing blencathra.

Lovely pub about 15 mins from Blencatha, most tables were booked, but we managed to find a table. Prices, are on the higher side, so expect a meal for two costing around £45-£50 with drinks. I had beer battered fish and chips, huge fish and chips with mushy peas. I ate them, but found the fish etc rather tasteless. Partner had a chicken thing, she thought it was nice but vegetables tasted as if they were cooked in a sweet and sour spice. It's nice place to pop into, perfectly edible, just let down by some of the flavours and lack of taste.

The food was very nice but not much of it. we were really looking forward to a Sunday roast here after the great reviews. We were told wen we arrived they were running out only sirloin & pork left so to order straight away we ordered one of each & was feeling grateful we got there in time seeing the other people eating theirs we cudnt wait for ours to come after a big walk we were hungry. I got one small piece of pork the amout you wud give a child 3 small bites it was gone & the sirloin was not much more but at least abit more than the pork & one small bowl of veg between us it was a tiny amount i did ask if possible cud they spare abit more veg & he did in fairness say they didn't have much but he brought some, the food was delicious but for the price of just under £20 each we expected more we then ordered a desert cos we were still hungry the sticky toffee pudding was lovely & a generous potion as you wud expect. Our roast did not look like others we seen we shud have ordered something else from the menu. When they said they were running out, they were not kidding.

Why does a hostel hide the fact linen is not included at booking. Nothing annoys me more than a booking like this that notifies you via email after booking that linen is not included. If I had know it was going to cost £23 include linen I would have booked another hostel nearby who charge £15 total including linen. Having a bold notice on the booking site NO REFUNDS tells me I'm not the first to feel deceived like this. Dont tell me on page 4 down the bottom in fine print it may say linen not included. If you can put NO REFUNDS in bold you can swap that for Linen not included. Hostels usually don't allow sleeping bags or travelers linen as they're an excellent way to transport bed bugs from one place to another. If a hostel has bed bugs, they can get on (or even into) your sleeping bag and can spread them to every other hostel where you use your bag after that.

Thanks to everyone at the Bunkhouse which added to my recent visit to the Lakes. I chose the Bunkhouse firstly on price and a very close second for location (central to my planned walks and rides) The Bunkhouse surpassed my expectations; Clean and fully equipped with everything you need; Showers, toilets, fully equipped kitchen, separate dining area/room, outside seating... Plus other guests were quiet, chilled - all there for walking and enjoying the surroundings. Unfortunately (for me it would seem), I didn't eat at the pub but the smell from the kitchens as I walked passed daily to the car park made my mouth water!...Other guests in my room did eat at the pub and they all said the food is fantastic and you are missing out! I want to come back to this area of the Lakes and am planning a visit when it snows next and I'm sure I'll be stopping here and will be having some food 😋 Other guests I spoke with recommended the Sunday Roast and Home made Pie 🥧

Although an obvious victim of inflationary pressures, the food was satisfactory & piping hot. Sadly, the staff were cold, to the point of rude. In fact, they were just rude. One would hope that politely asking for some ketchup, some cutlery, or to change one of our meals 45 seconds after ordering would have resulted in warmer interaction than sarcasm, smugness & a couple of grunts. One would have been disappointed. The pub, usually the peak of my walk, was instead the trough.

We visited for Sunday lunch yesterday, and I can confidently say it was the worst meal I've ever eaten, accompanied by the worst service I've ever received. A notably rude staff member, a Scottish man with dreadlocks, was particularly off-putting. His demeanor was not suited to the hospitality industry; it was more akin to a military environment. He found fault with almost every customer who entered the pub, exhibited unwelcoming arrogance, and made us feel quite uncomfortable. The food, if one could even call it that, was simply inedible. It consisted of pre-cooked microwave meals that were, frankly, the worst I've ever tasted. Everything on my plate tasted the same, except for the gravy. We wanted to complain and leave without eating or paying, but I suspected that Scottish Lil Wayne would have reacted very poorly and would hate to cause such a scene. So, we merely shuffled the food around and fed most of it to our dog, who also refused to eat some of it, despite being a typically greedy Labrador. We wouldn’t come back here if we were paid. I may add, the bar staff were fantastic, I hope they find themselves a better place to work. I’m seeing recent 5 star reviews for this place and can only assume they’re paid for/bribed with free drinks.. because everyone around us was being served and treated the same as us yesterday.

But they need to rethink their approach to food as there was a revolving door of customers turned away because all tables were fully booked even though many bookings were in 2 hours time. After checking the menu we ordered fairly quickly but we immediately felt an unpleasant vibe from the waiter with the Scottish accent & dreadlocks. It was as though he didn’t want us or anyone in fact there, the most unwelcoming man that you could possibly place as your front of house. We ordered and my six year old niece proceeded to open her colouring book and colour whilst waiting for the food to arrive. The same man came over swiftly and told us they didn’t allow colouring in the pub in case it marked the table and told us to put it away… what the heck? Very, very strange. This made my niece cry unnecessarily. The food arrived and it was average, we had roast beef and there were two small pieces of beef that was a third fat. The meal was swimming in gravy and the Yorkshire pudding was like eating a pork scratching, hard as anything and pretty tasteless overall. The other waiters were also very off hand with not just us but anyone who tried to get a table or order a drink at the bar, and not one cracked a smile the whole time we were there. All in all it was supposed to be a pleasant sunday evening meal to round off our time in the lakes for a birthday weekend and we unfortunately couldn’t have chosen a more gloomy venue. I could elaborate more on the evening but I’ve had enough typing a review for this place and it’s miserable staff. Lighten up folks it may never happen!!

3 day trip up from London and we lucked out massively with this place. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was as good as any pub food we have had (3 little pigs or steak and ale pie), and the accomodation was cheap but perfect for us.

Staff were awful. So incredibly rude, I’ve never known anything like it. Avoid at all costs.

Ate at this lovely inn twice on our holiday to Keswick. Great atmosphere and the food was amazing. My husband had the steak and ale pie on both visits and said it was the best he had ever tasted. I had home made lasagne with garlic bread on our first visit, then chicken supreme with peppercorn sauce on our return. Both were delicious, the latter was served with carrots and tenderstem brocolli, no frozen veg here! The staff were so friendly and service was exceptional. Dogs are welcome and muddy boots are not a problem if you enjoy the outdoor life. Couldn't recommend this lovely place enough. Will definately be back on our next Lake District visit.

Stayed in the Bunkhouse, very clean accommodation although not very spacious. The catering areas were very good, even though we shared with a few other groups it made for an even better stay. Love the pub, the food, the beers, the staff and the atmosphere. Great choice to stay for a short weekend break.

I'm staying here over night and the customer service is great, the rooms and bar are nice too. The only negative thing is that it's a little out of the way from the town centre but otherwise it's lovely

Great full pint of Ribblehead ale, perfect temperature. We called in on the off chance on a walk and we were so pleased to find that there was Sunday lunch available. A big plateful of freshly cooked roast beef, homemade Yorkshire pudding, mashed and roast potatoes, roast parsnips and mashed sweet potato, with delicious gravy. The plate was so full the other veg had to come in a separate bowl. We were too full for pudding. The pub is full of character but unpretentious and the landlord and landlady were friendly and chatty. Highly recommended

The cooked breakfast was excellent with good quality products and all cooked to perfection, especially the bacon! Good coffee too!
