We wandered in to the Grassmere area after our audio tour of the castle and thought this pub checked the requisite character box. Few tables were available even for drinks but our timing was lucky. One of if not the oldest pub in Edinburgh so best to reserve ahead if you want to eat.

Edinburgh's oldest pubsituated in historic Grassmarket 16th century. Good food. Excellent drinks choices. You can feel the history around you, best appreciated with a taste of haggis snack and a Belhaven Black Beer.

Cracking pub with some brilliant evening entertainment. Must visit when around the grassmarket area. Not to forget some top tier whiskey on offer.

Low key, historic (as in, THE oldest pub in Edinburgh), and cozy spot. My husband had a few local beers and I enjoyed some local gins in my G&Ts - fun staff, great clientele, and all-around jolly atmosphere. We didn't have any food, but plenty of people were ordering and enjoying - looked tasty and classic. We're not much for souvenirs, but we made sure to bring home a tee shirt!

We stopped for a quick bite to eat. We had all three starters. Nothing to go crazy over but it was pretty good

Had an exhilarating experience. It’s not common that you end up in a place which was made in 1500s and today being the most haunted beside being the most lively atmosphere inside and having a chilled belhaven with your best buddy… A Pub Must Visit. Would have loved to have the whiskey glass souvenir but it was over already.

Il pub prometteva bene dall'esterno e per questo abbiamo voluto provarlo. Volevamo anche cenare e qui c'è stata un po' di delusione. Il menu offriva una selezione limitatissima di piatti (5 portate principali). Scelgo un piatto (steak e ale pie) e mi dicono che non ce l'hanno, sono pertanto costretta a sceglierne un altro, scartando l'haggis e il piatto vegano la scelta era solo tra due possibili. Mia sorella prova il piatto vegano (pulled mushrooms chilli) che scopriamo essere un piatto tipico scozzese talmente piccante da non riuscire a terminarlo. I nostri piatti si rivelano un po' deludenti, ho la sensazione di essere entrata in un pub senza aver potuto provare un piatto tipico. Locale chiassoso e molto piccolo, servizio lento purtroppo perché è tanta la gente al balcone. Birre molto buone. In definitiva si è rivelato un posto dove poter bere una buona birra ma per mangiare occorre andare altrove.

Great pub, great beer, made us very welcome 2 generations of Dicksons love, this place and the beer!!

We would have loved to eat in this establishment. We came at 11am since it stated it was open, but apparently the kitchen was not open yet, they told us it would opened at noon so we ordered drinks to wait because we heard great things about their foods. But we’ll never know if it is up to the réputation since at 12.30pm they were apparently still looking for their cooks and kitchen was still not open. We were tired of waiting as we have other things to do in the city than just waiting. Nobody even cared enough to informed us on the status of the kitchen so we finally left to get food elsewhere. I don’t know if they expect people to just not eat at noon ? Do scottish folks eat late ? It’s a mystery, but I couldn’t recommend to go.

Lovely little pub. Staff were very helpful and put the Women's 6 Nations on for us, nice selection of drinks. Only downside is while there is level access for wheelchairs to get in there is not accessible toilet facilities (due to the age of the building). They do have an arrangement with the Beehive a couple of doors down though.

Super quaint place! In the heart of the city, in the charming Grassmarket square full of clubs and pubs, it offers a priceless atmosphere! You can breathe in the "Scottish" air that is absolutely not to be missed! Must try their national dish 'Haggis', truly delicious!!!

The only bar in Edinburgh that wouldn't let us in with our baby and even threw us out. We just wanted to have a beer. I wouldn't recommend this rude and inconsiderate bar to anyone.

Excellent pub. Live music makes a nice atmosphere - not too loud. The girls/witches next to us were annoying so we left earlier than we wouldve. Will return if we're back up this way. I'll put some salt on the doorway next time to stop them coming in. Thanks for having us.

500 years old Pub. A piece of history.

This pub is beautiful and with a pretty good price for being so famous. It is small so sometimes it is difficult to find a free place.

Great atmosphere! Small but packed! Log burner and live music, fairly priced drinks and quick and friendly service.

Had a lovely meal here. Alex, a wonderful blonde lady, was fabulous at helping my friend and I pick out what to eat and drink. At the end of the night, we were joking we wish Alex would ditch her shift to hang out with us. She was great, if you have her while there, ask for her recommendations. The pea soup and the veggie haggis were delicious. The sticky toffee was also a delight. Alex recommended to have that with custard and wouldn't you know, she was right again. I would go back.

Had the Innis and Gunn lager. The vibe at this pub is better than any other pub we’ve visited in . Definitely visit if you’re in the area.

The pea soup was phenomenal here! If you love literature and history, you will like this spot. Burns visited this very location, and it is the oldest pub in the city.

Located on Grassmarket Square, The White Hart Inn claims to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh, with parts of the building and cellar dating back to 1516. It was named after the rarest of all Highland creatures, the white stag. It is thought that this symbol even inspired J. K. Rowling to create the Harry Potter Patronus. The atmosphere is very welcoming, perfect for a late afternoon with a beer or cider. The service is also very friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

Stopped off for a drink and saw they had live music every single night from 9pm. Decided to stay and wait for the live music. Spent quite a bit on drinks and dinner only to be told at 8.00 that they didn’t have live music. Time to be honest and take the sign down.

Had a nice lunch and a couple of pints. Good atmosphere. We asked about buying T-shirt’s and were told by the manager that the shipment was due any day and she’d be happy to ship them. We prepaid for the items and are still waiting. We’ve contacted her twice, the last time in November, when she said they were going out in the post that day. We paid for shirts to give them free advertising and we got ripped off.

The Inn has a rich history, the food is a bit poor for an Inn. The service is fine and the atmosphere is nice.

I loved it. The best mac and cheese I've ever tried. The atmosphere is truly suggestive, the staff very kind and attentive. The bathroom wasn't very clean but there were a lot of people. I highly recommend this place and will be back!

Awesome little pub. We ordered the haggis, neeps and tatties and it was so good! Only wish we'd had more on the plate, it was so good. The only downside for us, was trying to order at the bar as there were so many people hovering, making it difficult to get to the tills and be served. Ideally people should be made to leave that bit of bar free.

Lovely historic pub, with loads of atmosphere. Be aware though, that you can only buy food if you have made a prior reservation. We planned on eating here, found a table, got drinks, and then had to find another place to eat after. I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere online, so I assume it is not widely known.

The food is wonderful and authentic and creative! Really like the duck dish. And sides are fruitful. Hot whisky, great! Good location just nearby royals mile and the castle.

If you are looking for a Scottish pub, this is your place! The attention was very good from the waiters. At 9 pm there was live music from a very nice man playing the guitar. We ordered 3 beers and 1 cider to drink, which were very delicious. They have many varieties of drinks and beers, as well as food, which we are waiting for another time, because we will return for sure! We liked the facilities and the experience was really good, because we were very comfortable 😊

Great little pub, cosy and welcoming. Bit wary of the food, we sat where we could see the so called chef microwaving the food. Dressed in hoodie and jeans drinking can of Monster. Reflection in microwave of him biting his nails and picking his nose. Rather unpleasant! Barman nice and friendly, definitely go for a drink and maybe ask to see the chef first

Arrivés à midi pour l’ouverture, nous avons eu la chance d’avoir une table car pratiquement tout était réservé. Belle ambiance dans ce petit pub. Service sympathique, carte courte mais très bonne. La tourte bœuf raclette est excellente, le haggis bien relevé, saucisse purée très bonne également. Une très belle découverte.

Busy little pub with nice atmosphere

I loved my experience in what is the oldest pub in the city. The place is quite small, so I recommend booking if you want to make sure you have a place, easily made via the site. Live music, you can breathe a wonderful Scottish air. I tasted the typical dishes of the nation and I was not disappointed as well as the delicious Belhaven. Excellent price. Highly recommended

Didn't get to have any food as the kitchen had to close due to a power cut affecting street. Offered coffee, glad of a sit down after walking from christmas market, up new steps to the Inn. Got very very crowded as the weather got colder and worsened - glad we booked a seat/table even though no food. Didn't stay too long. Just a warm up then went early to panto to go to cafe there.

The oldest pub of Edinburgh is a must visit when you're in the city. The wooden interior in combination with the Scottish hospitality and service makes it a warm, cosy place. Also, many nights there will be live music!

Established in 1516, this pub is one of the oldest in Edinburgh. I made reservations months in advance for two. It was walking distance from our hotel (Scotsman). It also is located in an area with shops and other pubs. Food was good and we loved the pub. Pea soup, cottage pie, boar burger.

Busy for a Wednesday night, lively atmosphere, sat outside and watched the world go by.

Enjoyed this historic pub right on Glassmarket Street in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Even on a Monday night, they were filled with a mix of locals and tourists. We were lucky and got two seats at the bar, so I advise getting a booking, especially if you have a group. It is one of the best selections of Bellhaven beers we have seen, including on Cask. It also has a nice selection of Scotch. We hadn’t expected live music but were treated to a fun musician playing a wide variety of traditional Scottish music and other more modern tunes. It was a perfect end to our trip to Edinburgh.

A very nice pub with not that much choices but good dishes. The kids loved the Mac'n'Cheese while I was a bit disappointed by the pea&mint soup that was not that tasty. The service was very nice and friendly.

Mediocre... If you want to eat or drink at the White Hart Inn, you better move on! Firstly, if you hope to have a table there, you will need to reserve at least 24 hours in advance on the site. Once there, we had lukewarm beers... Not very serious. Then, we wanted to eat: five dishes at most on the menu (some of which were out of stock that evening). A good thirty minutes later, the waiter brought us our plates; the quantities were really minimal. For my part, £17 for a ladleful of mash and two "wild boar" sausages of around 10cm (they were clearly not game sausages). Similar for my friends (a handful of mussels and two slices of bread for one, a ladle of rice and a ladle of chili for the other). Result: £85 for a beer, a cider, two cokes, two plates of sausage mash, a chilli and a plate of mussels... We were still hungry when we left the "oldest bar in Edinburgh". Clearly an overpriced tourist trap for good food but nothing more.

I had an incredible experience at White Hart Inn. The atmosphere was filled with the charm of live Scottish folk music during the evening on Sunday, played beautifully by Euan, whose talent brought such a special touch to the night. The staff was also very kind and attentive, ensuring everything was perfect. And the haggis? The best I’ve ever had! This was honestly one of the best experiences of my life, and I’m truly grateful for it. Thank you once again, Euan – I hope our paths cross again soon!

It was our last day in Scotland, so took a train up to Edinburgh from Glasgow. Loved the pub ambient and Tom was friendly to seat us and explain the menu. I had the wildboar sausage with mash and it was 😋, hubby has the beef burger on "black-bun"!

falls sie den scheint, was sie bei uns den ganzen Tag getan hat. Daher sind wir im nachmittags vor dem Lokal in dem kleinen Freisitz ein wenig versumpft. Der klasse Haggis, sehr gut gewürzt!, hat aber das Bier und den Whisky gut aufgesaugt. Nette Mädels hinter der Bar, die Getränke holt man sich selbst, das Essen bestellt man an der Bar und es wird einem dann gebracht. Leider kein Tennants Bier, eigentlich unser Favorit. Aber es fand sich in der Auswahl auch anderer, trinkbarer Stoff.
