The Beach House is a lovely location but prices are fairly high for what it is. I had a what was advertised as a smoothie though in reality it was just juice, IMO. It was tasty enough but at £6.50 for around 350mls it seemed overpriced. My roll with sausage was nice and good on the Beach House for using free range produce, but I would’ve really liked my roll much better with some butter on both sides. This might sound petty but for £6.50 I would’ve expected better. Staff were friendly and pleasant. I understand that the location of this place means high rent and energy prices are high and I sympathise with this but £13.00 for a breakfast roll and a juice seems steep to me. I will end this review on a positive though - the cakes and ice cream from the Beach House are consistently very good quality.

The food was fine but was ridiculously overpriced. £16 for a starter sized salmon Caesar salad, £14 for a "baguette" which was obviously one of these part-baked bought in things, £9 for a smallish panini with a garnish rather than side salad. I had the shakshuka which was tasty but again overpriced considering the very basic ingredients needed to make it. Cakes looked amazing but was unwilling to part with any more money to try them out.

After taking a 30 minute bus ride out to Portobello from Edinburgh, we walked to the esplanade & noticed what appeared to be a busy, attractive cafe with a number of tables overlooking the beach. Although the hot drinks menu looked rather expensive (£3.50 for breakfast tea) the number of customers present suggested that the experience would be worth paying for & so we decided to chance our arm there. Noting that there were no prices on the ice cream counter or cake cabinet should have been a red flag, as should have been the embarrassingly long wait for a waitress to come along to take our order - Perhaps foolishly I ordered a slice of almond tart & asked if I could have ice cream or cream on it, not realising until too late that I would end up paying £8 for this privilege! Most of the staff are young & carefree & seem completely oblivious to the need to deliver the impeccable customer service which the exorbitant prices here would suggest are on offer. Instead, the service is completely chaotic - My cake was delivered before my wife's soup & bread. We had to ask for butter for the bread. That was delivered without a knife to spread it. Several minutes later, my tea arrived - without milk. Another 5 minutes passed & then I had a miniature glass bottle of milk brought to me. The single teabag in the pot was completely overwhelmed by the amount if hot water that had been added to it. The tomato & basil soup was OK, excepting that it had appreciably cooled by the time the accompanying bread & butter were assembled. As our bus back to the city centre was due, I went to the till to pay rather than wait for a member of staff to eventually offer to take our money. Even then, I was left standing for several minutes whilst 2 young staff continued their conversation in the kitchen area. The price of 1 pot of tea, 1 almond tart with ice cream & 1 soup came to £18! I'm afraid next time we visit Portobello beach it will be with a flask of tea & a picnic....

Always happy here. Maybe it's cause I've usually been just in the sea and am stoked to be in the warmth with a coffee or maybe it's because the food is excellent, the vibes are chill and the staff are friendly (in addition to heat and good coffee). Best for brunch I'd say - so many brunch options beyond just the usual (including the Turkish eggs which are a winner). They also just do a really good filled roll AND they can put veggie haggis in it praise the lord.

Lovely location on Portobello prom with spectacular sea views. Unfortunately all the waitress could offer me was bread and jam with vegan spread as I am gluten, dairy and soya free. My friends enjoyed gluten and dairy free sweet potato soup which they said was delicious but unfortunately I couldn't have it as the stock contained soya. They also had gluten free carrot cake. There seemed to be a few gluten free cakes on display on the way in so I was disappointed there was nothing suitable. My friend was treating me to lunch so was rather embarrassed that all they could offer was a jam sandwich. I asked if they could at least do me a salad and all I got was lettuce with two slices of cold white bread. I had asked if they could warm it in the microwave. I did enjoy my freshly squeezed orange juice. I won't be rushing back. I've included a pic of my friend's carrot cake which she said was delicious. I loved the wee heart on her coffee.

Bright and cheery cafe overlooking the seaside. We were seated right away. Cafe is busy as to be expected with the seaside location. The have an attentive wait staff, but not hovering. When you're ready to order dessert, just go to the glass case to order what you like and they will bring to the table. It is a slower paced vibe. I wasn't surprised by the prices since it is a seaside location. The mocha and dark hot chocolate were delicious and piping hot! Only downside is the water glasses are on the super small side. They do bring you a large glass bottle to keep at the table to refill the water glasses from. The food presentation was carefully done and artistically so. Everything was so yummy!

This place is clearly very popular and not surprising given its beach front location perfect for a post swim piece of cake which is exactly what we enjoyed. It took a very long time to have our order taken and we were given our cakes very quickly but the baileys hot chocolate we were hoping would warm us up from the inside out never materialised and we were eventually told they didn't even have any baileys! My 3 year old Granddaughter and I went to The Beach House for hot chocolate and a cake. We were shown to our seat quickly but after 20 minutes of sitting waiting to be served, we had to leave. I watched people who had came in after us being served and twice I put my hand up to draw attention to us, the server indicted “one minute” then carried on serving other people. As I was leaving, I asked to speak to the manager (who showed us to our table in the first instance), I explained that we had to leave as we had been totally ignored for the last 20 minutes, my Granddaughter was so upset that she was leaving without her hot chocolate and the cup cake that she had carefully chosen when we first entered. The Manager just said “sorry”, and turned back to what she was doing”. I did send an email to raise my complaint but it’s been a week now and again, I’ve been ignored. I will certainly not be going back and would not recommend this eatery to anyone, very rude and discourteous staff

We chose a wet and windy afternoon to finally visit this Portobello institution after finding it fully booked on several other spring and summer visits. I hadn’t read the reviews on this website before we went and was a little shocked to see some of them as they don’t describe our experience today at all. As soon as we arrived/were blown in through the door this afternoon we were made to feel welcome by the staff at the till by the door. A large group in front of us were ordering cakes to take away but the manager/hostess for the restaurant saw we were hoping to sit in and immediately went to find us a table. She apologised that the only spare table was at the back of the cafe and that both seats didn’t have a full sea view, but this was fine for us, especially as we hadn’t booked and the weather was terrible. We were looking for a light lunch and enjoyed the Mediterranean halloumi flatbread (full of herby roasted veg and new potatoes as well as a delicious baba ghanoush), and the ‘salmon smash’ (generous portion of smoked salmon with avocado and herby whipped cream cheese on a massive piece of sourdough toast). There’s a particularly good range of unusual cold drinks: homemade fruit juices and iced teas, and kombucha from a company in Glasgow. No problems whatsoever with the coffee and we are coffee addicts! The three staff members who served us were very friendly and attentive and the last waiter we spoke to as we paid had a chat with us about the storms on our way out. The atmosphere was buzzing (the cafe was full throughout our visit) but relaxed. It is definitely fair to say it compares in price to other independent cafes in the centre of Edinburgh, but as a treat and somewhere to enjoy a leisurely weekend brunch or light lunch with friends I would definitely return.

The manager on duty today is an absolute disgrace! We just wanted to get a sit in coffee, we got in the queue to get a table, after standing 10min outside we followed the queue inside. Finally we were at the front. After another 5min the manager came and told us that we need to wait outside, as they don’t want to have queues inside. So we went back outside being still the first ones in the queue. Other people came behind us and waited too. We waited a further 20mins outside. 2 different couples waiting in the queue behind us walked past us and suddenly got a table, after they spoke to the manager. So I went in and asked the manger why nobody came outside to take the first people in the queue as we got asked to wait there. She tried to tell me that these people had waited longer than us, clearly not if they were in the queue behind us. She was then absolutely cheeky and disrespectful making excuses instead of apologising . It was clear she had no overview of that was going on since she’s didn’t once come outside Ton Heck the queue. I popped in as I was staying in Porty for a week. I have been before and it had been lovely. I specifically asked for my hot chocolate to be extra hot. It took a little while to be served as they seemed busy. When it arrived it was warm at best. I asked the waitress if it could be heated up and she said they'd need to make a new one. That then arrived and was fine. I give it three stars as the next day I visited with friends and we ordered drinks and soup. Two of the drinks were asked to be extra hot. The drinks were alas not extra hot and the soup was tepid. We said something and they all went back and arrived again as requested. Overall I can't complain about the service as they didn't fuss at all and made everything as requested. However based on having to send things back twice I did doubt whether to go back. My friend said they are normally brilliant so I guess I am posting this to let the Beach house know of my experience and also for anyone going there. If you don't get what you asked for then do say something as they were great at putting things right :) Sept 2023 update I came back here again as it is a friend of mines favourite place. Alas I left again with the sense it is ok. Of the places on the sea front it has prime location and will of course be successful. Alas whilst last time I had problems with my orders, this time the staff were very variable. I bought an ice cream which was lovely and had a wonderful chat with the friendly engaging lady that served me. When I went in a few days later with a friend the waiter didn't make any eye contact didn't offer any sort of greeting, he appeared bored and didn't remember the additional glass of water we'd asked for. I had to go up and ask and eventually he put it down, no words, no apology. I realise these are small things but I must admit, if it was not for meeting friends, I wouldn't bother going in again when next here.

There’s a sign outside telling you to wait to be seated. Family in front of us waited about five minutes and then went inside to be told to just take a vacant table. We then went inside to stand and wait again on two staff finish gabbing. We were shown to a table, we sat for ten minutes with staff walking past us ignoring us. We just left., no one noticed. The place was half full and there seemed to be enough staff. Music blaring like a nightclub. Owner sitting opposite us tapping away on her laptop seemed unconcerned about the terrible service.

Previously asked to leave and order takeaway at the window. Today at the window was told by a rude waitress orders are to be made inside and there is nobody available to take an order inside. Saved time and got ice cream elsewhere.

Lack of Service and Inequality I visited the restaurant on June 26th around 2pm, and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. Upon arriving, I waited alone for approximately five minutes, during which not a single waiter acknowledged or approached me. However, when some local patrons joined the line behind me, they were immediately greeted by a waitress. I expressed my preference to sit outside, to which the waitress agreed, mentioning that the order would be brought to the table later. Regrettably, after my mother and I sat outside for a duration of ten minutes, none of the waitstaff offered us water or menus. I noticed that even when a waiter attended to the table of locals beside us, making eye contact with me, no assistance or acknowledgment was extended to us. Frustrated, we decided to change our seats and continue waiting inside the restaurant. However, once again, none of the waiters seemed to take notice of our presence. When we approached them to inquire about our wait, we were simply told to be patient. While I cannot conclusively state whether this behavior was directed at us or stemmed from other reasons, as the only ethnic minority present, I felt deeply offended witnessing preferential treatment towards the local customers while we were denied even the most basic courtesies. I understand that incidents like this may not always be explicitly categorized as racism, but regardless, I believe it is crucial for your establishment to improve staff training and promote inclusivity. I sincerely hope that my feedback is taken constructively and that the necessary measures are implemented to ensure equal treatment and respect for all customers, regardless of their background. It is my belief that fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment will not only enhance the dining experience but also demonstrate a commitment to fairness and diversity.

Poor. Avoid unless you book a table you want beforehand. Walked out after waiting a while for a table even though several were free. Finally was offered one in a corner with a restricted view. When I politely moved to another table that was free,...

The setting is lovely but the mains are very average for the price. You come here for the wonderful array of overpriced cakes and coffee and the view. Enjoy :-)

Great spot to have a good breakfast at Edinburgh beach. Staff is very friendly and gave us a small chat. The view is great and the food was also very delicious. But even for the awesome see view the prices are a bit over the top or the portions are a bit too small.

Understaffed and the food - we had a wrap and a Checheka (Excuse the spelling) that had far too much tomato sauce - took ages to arrive and were £10 a piece! We first waited at the door for about 15mins before we got seated, and then we had to go up and remind them we had to order! In the end we waited about an hour and a half for those two items. Never returning.

Waited nearly 10 minutes, to then be told I need to order takeaway from the hatch (complete opposite system to last time). Then when at hatch despite nobody queuing inside, i found myself standing waiting to be served again. Went inside to question why and got snippy answer, so I left.
