Monboddo in Edinburgh, City of

Monboddo is a good go-to restaurant while staying at the Doubtree Hilton in Edinburgh. Although I would not have chosen to dine there as many times if I weren't a hotel guest. Location and availability were a great convenience while traveling. The breakfast buffet is extensive, offering the main staples of a hearty Scottish breakfast. I highly encourage patrons to order off the special menu for fresh eggs made to order. The extra few minutes are worth the wait. Dinner there on my first night was good, but nothing extraordinary. The service was pleasant and welcoming. The atmosphere and decor are higher end. In minor detail, there is no place to keep your handbag if you are seated in the central dining area other than your lap or the floor. The round back chairs are not accommodating, so ask for a side booth. The side bar area close by is a very nice area to stay if you are waiting for a table. Overall, it was a fine place to dine during my stay in Scotland.

Great spot for a bite to eat. After a long travel day, it was a pleasant surprise here at Monboddo. I had the Club Sandwich which is divine. A beautiful chicken breast with bacon , lettuce, tomato, and the most delicious Sriracha Mayonnaise. Service here is wonderful and the wine was great! Highly recommend this restaurant

Fun having a drink and watching the game. Modern and comfortable.

Hands down, some of the best food we’ve had recently! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavour and cooked to perfection. Each bite was a delight, and the presentation just blew us away ✨ We also loved the vibe of the place! It strikes the perfect balance between elegant and relaxed, making it ideal for any occasion.

When we arrived there was some slight confusion over our booking, as to whether we didn’t want the window seat, which the servers had a small discussion over in front of us. We were sat down, with a small A5 menu, double sided with the menu printed on both sides. There was a key at the bottom of the menu for dietary information, but the menu failed to display any of them on their menu. The drinks menu was non existent on the table, instead a QRcode with a Google drive link to the drink listing. When questioning the server about the menu online, they said it was the old menu. Slight disappointment as the old menu had much more choice and variety. Food was average, but fresh! Fish and chips is recommended, the cottage pie was huge, and could have done with being a bit smaller with a side of vegetables instead. No desserts were offered, and no second serve of drinks offered. Asked to sign it to the room, but no pen provided. Service was slow, despite being very quiet.

Have had steak at alot of restaurants. This was the worst steak ever. £67 for two steaks and a portion of chips. The steak was rotten.

Hotel restaurant attached to Hilton in downtown Edinburgh, 200 yards from the castle. Service was not a priority for the staff and they weren’t busy. Disappointing. Food wasn’t terrible but nothing special. Will not be returning.

Easy place to come for a casual bite. Califlower bites were the best.

So we have been ending the night here for the last couple of days, with a few drinks. The atmosphere is laid back and great to wind down. Tonight, we actually had some food, and that was really good as well. The staff has been friendly and inviting and is really attentive, unlike a neighboring pub, where I was passed by many times trying to get drinks after standing in line for at least 6 min(when I made it to the bar). The staff for me makes this place a must try.

It’s a nice space and some of the staff were v good. The (I assume) bar manager and his lackeys were not good –if someone objects to you having taken their money without their consent you should probably return that money.

I was perusing the menu in the lift after checking in at the Doubletree, Edinburgh and was thrilled to see a Sunday Roast. It stated that the POPULAR Sunday roast should be pre booked due to limited availability, so once in the room my husband got straight to it and booked us in. We arrived at the restaurant at 1pm to find it completely empty. We were shown to a table and given menus which stated we should ask our server for the price of the roast as this could vary. The server didn’t know so went to ask his supervisor, who arrived at our table and told us the price was £30. Not sure we’d heard correctly we asked 1 3 as in £13 but were told no, 3 0. We both stared at each other open mouthed. She told us that we could choose a couple of sides from the menu to go with the beef but for that price there was no way we were paying through the nose for something that was not a proper roast dinner with the trimmings you would expect with roast beef. We both chose something else and ended up paying around £30 for a main for both of us. I researched best roast dinners in Edinburgh and found a roast beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, selection of steamed veg and gravy for £17.50. We regularly eat in London so I also researched prices there, ironically for £31.50 you can indulge in 28 day matured Scottish beef at Simpsons in the Strand where the beef is hand carved at your table. The restaurant remained empty while we ate our meal. As we were readying to leave another group entered and enquired about the roast dinner and were equally horrified at the cost. The meal we had was ok but I would not be rushing back to what I feel is an grossly overpriced restaurant.

Had drinks at the bar and was served by Shawn, excellent service, friendly and efficient, well worth a visit.

Had a dinner night there. Loved the concept. Wee plates to share and I found out a little bit about Lord Monboddo (never heard of him, but pleased I do now) Mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes tart was awesome. Pork belly and lamb flank (I was told that they make seasonal changes in the menu) were super delicious (to be honest not a big fan of the chickpeas with the lamb). Cauliflower fritters were nice. My biggest surprise was the Rhubarb burnt cream for dessert. You have to try it. From the cocktails The cocktail Born with Tails just perfect! Definitely I'll come back. The team was fantastic. Well done everyone.

Enjoyed a wide variety of the delicious small plates menu. Interesting story behind the inspiration for the restaurant added to the experience. Our server, Victoria, was very friendly and informative. Would definitely visit again!

We ordered and waited for an hour without the food ever arriving. The manager was incompetent at best as the team clearly recognized the mistake as they talked to us and the server, at 40 minutes in,came to check our orders and commented that she had put the order in. The manager then inquired whether we ordered but no effort was made to rectify the issue. After over an hour we all left. Very disorganized with no oversight by management.

My wife and I were looking for somewhere a bit different for a date night and were delighted to discover Monboddo Restaurant. The staff member who served us told us all about their new menu and we loved our "wee plates". Worth a visit.

I visited in March with a friend for a couple of drinks. We weren't expecting much as hotel bars can be quite soulless but were looking for somewhere a bit nicer to have a drink. It was a great experience and completely changed my mind about drinking in hotel bars! The staff were fantastic and really knowledgeable. We ordered a number of cocktails and enjoyed the recommendations from the staff. The old-fashioned made by Calum was my drinks highlight.

Have been to Monboddo several times for lunch over the years and will return again. Spacious and airy, friendly staff and tasty menu, what's not to like. Portion sizes just right, and the menu is different to what I'd cook at home so all good. Also good location for west side of town with regular buses and plenty of car and bike parking nearby.

Absolutely outstanding service, great food and great atmosphere. Definitely has to be a must when in town. Staff great fun!

Great bar attached to the Hilton Doubletree Edinburgh. The bar is well stocked and the prices are not too expensive for a city centre hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. The COVID-19 protocols were in place and enforced when we visited.

Room half full with patrons, not a member of staff in sight to order from. Left after 10 minutes. Bit of a shame, seemed nice enough.

Quiet and comfortable dining room, ideal for an after work snack and a beer. The menu offers a decent selection of small bites, including haggis spring rolls (okay I guess but not great), and a few hot plates. Service was good. Reasonable pricing.

My Mum was trying to book afternoon T for Tuesday 14th September was told they would phone back to confirm, my mum tried phoning on numerous occasions , I sent an email ... nothing....ended up having to go in , I explained the situation , basically was told I'm off Sunday and Monday couldn't reply to emails and because of covid we were only doing afternoon T at the weekends and no-one to answer phones as we've got more than a restaurant to run.Wow.... Totally shocked,What a way to run a business, yeah totally agree hospitality has been hit really bad. I'm currently sitting outside the restaurant and the potential customer flow yeah ...not the same as before covid but there are people passing by, may I suggest getting your fingers out and advertise.a sign over the scaffolding would maybe be a good idea to start with..What's the point of having all the tables there paying for staff electricity etc, surely you should be looking to the future rather than the place looking like a ghost town....

Dined there on our first night in Edinburgh, after long drive up we felt it would be perfect to eat there and explore more the following days. It was absolutely delightful, the food was immaculately presented, fresh, flavoursome and out if this world, It was sparsely populated with most people in there enjoying a nice cocktail and a pint of Innes and Gunn. I would highly recommend the restaurant, I had the Prix Fixe menu with haggis spring rolls. cod loin and chocolate fondant. It was all incredible. Just one word of warning, the wife had a cocktail that nearly knocked her socks off, they are potent and full of booze.

3 members of staff working. 2 of them wandering around taking group pictures for people and 1 person making drinks. Took over 20 mins to receive a drink and when I eventually did it was from the poor woman who seems to be doing everything. Those 2 stars are for her alone.

We accidentally booked this restaurant in an attempt to book the Skybar in the doubletree Hilton and decided to just give it a try and we were very pleasantly surprised! We were greeted and shown to our table, given our food and drink menu and checked in to follow COVID guidelines, the table and seats were so comfortable as they were more like sofas and the interior of the restaurant was visually smart and classy. It was very quiet and not very busy and this just added to the atmosphere in a way, we didn’t wait too long for food and the food was very tasty - we enjoyed the pulled pork in buns, which were the softest buns I’ve ever had, the price was brilliant and there was more than enough to have your fill. I would’ve been more than willing to pay more than what the bill had actually come to and the staff were so kind and professional, this was all topped off with a nice side view of Edinburgh castle which is of course a bonus. Thanks to the staff of Monboddo for a great lunch!

After a lovely day out popped down for a meal & something to eat, server got food order wrong & drinks wrong and the same server got our drinks order wrong on another occasion. Staff need training & would look more professional with a uniform.

I booked afternoon tea using an itison voucher. Upon arrival was told how to access the lunch menu, so I had to explain the booking was for afternoon tea. The deal included prosecco but I had to ask for this and also for tea. If I hadn't asked didn't seem like we were getting either. During the visit it seemed almost impossible to get attention from the staff. I'd understand if it was busy but there were maximum 3 tables in at any time. Tried over and over again to get someones attention and in the end another table had to approach the bar to request service. We thought they'd take our drinks order on way back but no had to flag them down. Then when our drinks were brought to us the staff member didn't say sorry for the wait or tell us to enjoy our drinks they immediately said you only have table until 4. This was 55 minutes before 4. We had as much luck trying to get their attention for the bill so 4pm came and went and I had to approach the bar to pay,where all the staff members were congregating . I was then given a bill with an additional £44 in it. I was charged for 2 afternoon teas despite having given the staff member who 1st served me the voucher details. When this was pointed out all the staff could think to do was demand the voucher details again. At this point I got annoyed as it was the icing on the cake of the bad service I'd received. They did eventually relent about needing the voucher again but I think this was because they didn't know how to answer my various complaints and I received no apology about the overcharging or any of the other issues. Also we were left with our dirty dishes on the table for most of our visit, we had yo ask for them to be cleared. I have emailed a complaint but have had no response as yet but all management need to do is check the cctv to see how inattentive the staff are

Turned up today to have a business meeting over brunch/lunch. However, the place was closed and had to order coffee's in the hotel reception area instead. Once the place was open at 12pm, business associates and I decided to move into the Monboddo lounge for a little more comfort and peace and quite. However, we returned to the reception area as rock music was blasting out. On our return, the receptionist advised us that she would have the music turned down if we returned to Monboddo, so we moved back in and the music was lowered. However, we were clearly having a meeting and talking when one of the bar staff put the TV on directly above our heads as the rugby was on the tv. I asked him to turn the volume down or off and put the subtitles on and he advised that he had to consider other peoples request, yet the music was still playing as well as the tv volume??? We were having several coffee's and teas with a view to order lunch but with the attitude of staff, we decided to go elsewhere for lunch.The receptionist was lovely initially and was very helpful, but after that it went downhill.I used to use Monboddo on a regular basis for meetings with lunch or coffee, but I felt the quality and customer service had dropped drastically. Perhaps, that is why the place was only 5% full. I had decided to give Monboddo a second chance, encouraging one of my associates to meet here after a drive from Birmingham. Sadly, I was disappointed and so was he and therefore I will probably not take a chance with this place again, as there are many other better venues available in Edinburgh. I also noticed a staff member hoovering near an open breakfast buffet area where food is lying open?Very disappointed!!!

Cuando llegó la comida, todo era del mismo color con poca imaginación y el más barato de los más baratos en términos de calidad y presentación. El pan de los sándwiches era duro, como si lo hubieran dejado al descubierto en una nevera antes del servicio. ¡Esto ya era bastante malo, pero los veganos y los vegetarianos eran terribles, había bocadillos de huevo para Vegan! ! y pimienta viscosa y tomate como segunda opción. desafiamos al camarero que dijo que todo era vegano, incluso la crema coagulada, claramente no tenía idea de lo que estaba sirviendo. Le pedí que se lo quitara y lo cambiara, lo cual hizo a regañadientes y produjo un segundo stand de los bollos más horribles que he visto en mi vida, claramente el Chef no los había probado ya que eran absolutamente viles y duros como una roca.Esto significaba que estaba muy avergonzado de haber invitado a amigos a asistir a esta horrible experiencia, mi amiga que era vegana no sabía lo que estaba comiendo y el camarero no pudo confirmar lo que estaba sirviendo, ¡así que no comió nada!Recibí un reembolso de 22 por el vale de itison y una disculpa genérica.Experiencia horrible

A brief review: Food was bad. Staff amazing. Unfortunately won’t come back. I would like to be quite frank with my review. Location wise it was alright, it was a little confusing because i booked online with the name Bread Street Brasserie in mind but when i came to the restaurant i was directed to a restaurant called Monboddo. Correct me if i have mistaken however i was incredibly confused as to why it was so. Staff was amazing. It is SUCH a pity that the staff service was so good but i could say little the same with the food. The food was such a disappointment. We had a three course meal for £25 during christmas and it was so sad. The soup was too sweet it tasted like a thick custard. The main cranberry and lentil did not taste like a bake at all. It had this weird, very very fine breadcrumbs that coated the top that made it super dry on top and mushy at the bottom. this is the worst case of soggy bottoms. I think this dish should be appropriately named a ‘Mashy Lentils plus 6 pieces of cranberries topped with amazingly dry breadcrumbs.’ Such a let down. This menu was marketed as a vegan option and the dessert that we are offered is just FRUIT SALAD? Oh god please someone save this fruit salad. The waitress, who i am sure is very nice, said that the salad would be delicious with fruits of honeydew and ‘posh plum’. Out they come, straight from the preserved fruits can. Absolutely fantastic. i am not sure if the definition of posh is the same anymore. The sorbet with the salad... It was just meh. Nothing incredibly unique, nothing incredibly horrible. Just meh. I think the only thing fresh in the dish was the grapes. What a joy. Charging £8.33 for each meal course here should be illegal. Also, misrepresentation of what was on the menu and what was given. The tea that we ordered was labelled TWINNINGS and out came Tetley. To top it off, everything took incredibly long to come and the restaurant wasn’t even THAT packed. Unfortunately i suppose this review did not turn out to be rather frank lol. But i did write my honest feelings. It was so sad to eat this meal. Luckily we decided to share the festive meal so we didn’t have to double the disappointment for each of us having to finish such awful meals. Nope nope nope, won’t recommend.

Solo tiene 3 años, pero las porciones que le dieron me habría costado comer. Aprecio que sea una crítica extraña, pero parecía ser un desperdicio de comida.El servicio fue amable y educado, pero estuvimos casi 3 horas en el restaurante por 3 platos. Puedes imaginar lo harto que se siente un niño de 3 años en ese momento.

It's a very classy bar with nice comfy sofas. Staff are good, toilets are immaculate. Drinks are slightly pricy. This is basically the bar of Double tree Holton.

Quiet place for a drink or afternoon tea. Toilets way down dingy stairs. Depends which staff are on as to what kind of service you get.

The best kept secret in town for a quiet drink. I love the laid back, relaxed feel Monboddo has. We met friends for dinner here a week ago but they'd just changed their menu and it didn't suit us. Still a great place for a drink though.

Did not want to go out the first day of arrival and the salad/onion rings/beer was good and reasonable in price. Another night we were tired and ate in and again - tasty with decent service.

Don't normally review bars but this one was great if you want a quiet business chat where you wont be disturbed. Nice wine list, decent service and good nibbles too!

The Monboddo bar had plenty of room to relax and enjoy drinks. The have both a Bar Menu and an Al La Carte Menu so plenty to choose from... If you are a Hilton Honors member you get a 20% discount!

Lovely place to end off a lovely afternoon.

Clean and tidy, nice view of the street, bar on the ball but the music needs changing quickly as I would say the clientele are 45+ they don't want the music of a much younger generation

Only place open on Crimbo Day and it was quiet!! The guy which was on the bar very nice although it was Crimbo day!! Much needed Pint & Bulleitt had!! THANK YOU!!!!

2018.... we've come back a few times since the initial review but we've found the staff to be constantly under pressure and unable to give the service you'd expect from such an establishment. Please remedy this as we want to come again for the great atmosphere and cocktails 2015 Excellent cocktails. Andrea is a total perfectionist! Every time we come to Edinburgh we come here. Love it

Tuvimos una breve estadía en el festival de cócteles y una de nuestras últimas paradas fue aquí, nos hubiera gustado haber llegado antes, ya que el cóctel especial del festival, el Monboddo Julep, fue nuestro favorito absoluto (¡gracias Lorenzo!). El resto del menú de cócteles también era fabuloso y tenía una buena selección de espíritus, en general un lugar muy cómodo para sentarse y relajarse con una bebida.

Nuestra hija y nuestro yerno reservaron un té sorpresa por la tarde para celebrar el cumpleaños de mi esposo y ¡qué gusto! El té de la tarde era delicioso, sándwiches, cálidos quiche y bombones haggis, cálidos bollos con crema y mermelada y una deliciosa variedad de deliciosos pasteles, todos disfrutados con ginebra y tónicos, simplemente deliciosos. El personal era agradable y profesional y todos tuvimos una experiencia muy agradable.

Came here to use wifi, as my home is struggling with the internet connection at the moment. I was looked after by Lorenzo, who is a great bartender/server. He was truly welcoming, attentive, friendly and just simply great with customers. Had tea and scone, which was great! They've got paper straws, which is always a bonus for me. I hope they've got other sustainable measures too. ;) Also, two people walked in, looked at the menu, then wanted to walk out, but they were stopped by a team member asking them how they could make them happy. Just simply WOW!!

Wanted a fun drink and went into Monboddo. Decided on the namesake "Monboddo" and was in for a treat. So much love and care, as my son would say, seemed to go into that glass. Refreshing and beautifully served.

Booked to have Afternoon Tea here as a treat for my Mum's Birthday. Lorento was very helpful and accommodating which meant that we had a lovely afternoon. Food was filling and tasty. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Delicioso bar en el centro de la ciudad junto al Hilton Doubletree de al lado. Muy sabroso té de la tarde con una olla decente de Earl Grey y un Bombay Sapphire y Fever Tree Tonic adicional para terminar. Llegada atenta y acogedora, bar muy limpio y bien ventilado y una hermosa vista del castillo. Las grandes ventanas daban una sensación de espacio y los bollos y delicias eran sabrosos. Tuvimos suerte con el bar al tomar algunas fotos de su nuevo menú y esto estaba teniendo lugar en la mesa contigua. Al finalizar nos ofrecieron deliciosas rebanadas de pizza, pescado, haggis y más. Lorenzo, el gerente del bar era muy amable y muy atento, como todo el personal. Fue nuestra primera visita, no será la última.

Booked afternoon tea for 5. Expected it to be presented better. We were told to just sit at any table. There was no table set & laid out specifically for afternoon tea which was disappointing. In the end the food turned out to be lovely and plenty of. We made the most of it.

We visited here for an early dinner, ahead of going to the Sky Bar. The fish and chips were lovely and the chocolate brownie was amazing!

Celebrating my daughter's 18th birthday,we came at lunchtime and had a delicious afternoon tea, very special with a lovely glass of prospect for the birthday girl. Beautiful setting overlooking the castle and comfortable seating and relaxed atmosphere.

Mientras se aloje en el Double Tree Hilton decidimos en nuestra última noche para tomar una comida ligera y una pinta en el Monboddo. Tuvimos un buen asiento en la ventana mirando Spittal Street. Nuestro camarero era excelente ver se ocupó de nuestras necesidades mientras asistía a un grupo grande a una boda.

Fuimos allí para bebidas después de asistir a una graduación en el Lyceum. Está situado en el hotel Doubletree Hilton y es mucho mejor que muchos de los bares de la zona.

We were meeting a business colleague in Edinburgh on a Sunday afternoon during the festival. Normally, it is very difficult to get bookings during the festival but no problem, and we were even able to request a table with a view of the castle. Atmosphere, food, location all excellent but service was exceptional-we felt spoiled and special! Thank you, we will be back!

Great place to have a meeting over a coffee, quite and the staff are very friendly.

Enjoyed both evening drinks before going out, and a lunchtime snack and drinks - staff all very smart and professional - Monboddo is spacious and comfortable, and great for watching folk on the street

BEST meal on my trip was at my hotel. The quality and presentation were perfect. I enjoyed it so much I ordered it again the next evening. If you go, I hope you have the opportunity to meet Lorenzo. He was so friendly and attentive. I was lucky to sit at the bar with him and we had a lovely conversation. To Management - Please keep these items on the menu. They were amazing! Also, please thank Lorenzo for his wonderful hospitality. I hope to see him on my next trip.

Stayed at the Hilton Doubble Tree next door. We had a fantastic dinner and evening in the bar. Great food, wine, cocktails and live music! Nothing was too much trouble for Lorenzo!!

Brilliant evening. Loved the live music and atmosphere it helped to create. Staff were very attentive even when the bar became busy. Special thanks to Lorenzo who looked after us and made us feel very welcome and cared for.

Stayed at the Doubletree by Hilton next door. Went to eat something simple. The French/Scottish me took Haggis and Brie. Found the staff to be really great. Wine selection was nice and staff were really friendly and chatty. It was quite quiet which allowed the staff to really take care of the guests. Grazie mille Lorenzo for the Malbec/Sangiovese test. Great to see staff passionate about the products they serve.

Definitely a good choice for having a nice and relaxing evening in Edinburgh! Pleasantly surprised with the variety of drinks. Big plus it just right next door to our hotel!

Had the super natural salad which I enjoyed. Good service. Can recommend for business dinners. Limited atmosphere, as you'd expect from this kind of place.

The staff, although constantly changing over the weeks/months, are unfailingly courteous and efficient. We popped in for a quiet drink after work about 7.30 last night (Thursday 17th Feb) as we do every week or so.Shortly after we sat down the television was switched on (loudly) over our heads and we had to move. The waiter came and politely apologized, I made no comment and we drank up and left.I will however comment now. If it's a cocktail bar then surely the tv should stay off (except for pre-advertised occasions) and those who want to watch the football should be directed to the public bar next door which was full of people watching the football on multiple screens.The bar does suffer a bit from a lack of identity but I will non the less return as I like it.If you are looking for somewhere that is , usually, quiet (for a drink/snack)in the city center then this is a good option.

I went there for afternoon tea with friends. We arrived an hour and a half early but, our table was ready for us. It was lovely and quiet away from the noise of the rugby!The food was really nice as was the service. I highly recommend it!

Attached to the Hilton Double Tree hotel, the bar is pleasant enough with a good selection of beers, ciders and spirits. However, most of the customers seemed to be hotel guests and so there is not the usual "bar" atmosphere. Thus, as it is located within a short walking distance to the Grassmarket, we only had a couple of drinks before heading out for the night.Staff were pleasant and prices reasonable, given that it is a Hilton in a good area of a major city.
