The White Hart in South Somerset

We were in Somerton for the weekend and purely by chance ended up at The White Hart for dinner. We hadn't booked, but Rob very kindly managed to find a way to rearrange the bookings to provide a table for the two of us - and we were so glad that he did. The wine was good quality, we ordered two main meals from the regular menu - flat iron steak and cider battered haddock. The staff were polite and friendly. We saw workers throughout the evening very clearly dealing with a very busy restaurant - but everyone we saw was working with pace and purpose, focused on service delivery and working well together. Everyone worked quickly but with a calm energy. Even when relaying tables this was with attention to detail and clear care about customer experience - we saw tables being balanced so as not to wobble for the diners, candles and glasses laid out to be aesthetically pleasing, table legs get wiped to be clean for the next diner - just small things that were done as second nature that show the approach to standards. Both dishes came out in good time - especially considering that the restaurant was (from what we could see) completely full. The food was cooked beautifully; the steak was delicious, seasoned well and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The batter on the haddock was lovely and crisp, but achieved without overcooking the fish, which was still perfectly tender. Both plates were appealing and presentation well thought out. Attention to detail was a theme that carried through into the food where garnish was built into the dish properly rather than an after thought - For example the lemon served with the fish could have been served simply cut and been perfectly acceptable, but effort was taken to lightly grill the lemon for deeper flavour and more appealing appearance. We couldn't have managed a dessert, but the options were very enticing. We ended our evening finishing our glasses of wine in front of the fireplace before leaving. We already plan to return, despite the 3.5 hour journey from home.

Having not been here for a few years due to the consistently poor and very slow service and average (at best) food we received over 3 consecutive visits, we decided to give it another try as it's a local business for us. Sadly the service is still very slow with a 30 minute wait for 2 coffees, and attitude bordering rude. 4th visit, 4th disappointment. There are far superior and cheaper places in the locality, my advice is to try them first.

Had evening meal here on recommendation of hotel where I was staying and was not disappointed. Very high quality, fresh ingredients and an imaginative vegetarian choice which is so unusual to find. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices all very reasonable. A real gem in a small town.

Sunday lunch was disappointing. We arrived on time & they weren't very busy but we waited for drinks menu, then drinks & even longer for food. Fish & chips were OK & a pizza but the Sunday roast beef was poor. The beef was overcooked, dry & chewy; mashed roots were mushy; Yorkshire pudding was doughy as if it had been standing around. The meal was only saved by the extra side of leek & cauliflower cheese. Other pubs do this so well (eg your namesake in Haselbury Plucknett). The biggest disappointment was the cheese as, at £12.50 I was expecting something special. The homemade crackers were fine & tasty (a bit like flattened cheese straws, with added herbs, aniseed) but the Cheddary cheeses were rubber-y & tasteless with no sign of the promised Bath Soft. The quince jelly was very sweet. I did not complain at the time as I was a guest; had I been paying I would have been vocal. There are much better Sunday lunches in the area, with better food & better service.

It was very pleasant and the food was tasty but a little expensive but the staff were attentive, a good place to meet up with family .

Stayed in Room 1 with our dog. Check-in fine, but be prepared to drop off luggage before finding somewhere to park. Not really an issue. Room comfortable with a large bed. Decent bathroom and shower. Good, generous food in the evening. Excellent pizza from "proper" oven. Lovely breakfast. Kind staff.

I can't praise the food at the White Hart highly enough. We had dinner and breakfast twice during our short stay, and everything was imaginative, delicious, and exquisitely presented. Service was excellent; friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The bar and rooms are really nicely and comfortably decorated; great colour schemes with quirky details. Being dog friendly is a bonus; ours really appreciated his own water bowl and treats whilst we ate our meals. He especially liked his little gift box 🎁. I would definitely recommend a visit. We will certainly be returning. Thank you for our lovely short break.

A genuine B&B experience in charming Somerton.

Service here is always excellent, and the food delicious to go alongside it. Highly recommend for a casual but wonderful spot for dinner.

We have had the good fortune of visiting this place for food on two occasions, the most recent being for a 60th birthday sunday lunch today with extended family, and on both occasions the food, service and overall experiences have been 5* and above. Big THANK YOU to all the staff, chef etc.....for making our sunday celebration a memorable one. Highly recommend this establishment and we will definitely be eating here again.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Service was good and very efficient and friendly. Food was presented lovely plentiful and cooked to perfection. There were 6 of us all had different dinners and desserts. Nothing was too much trouble. It was excellent value for money. The menu itself was varied so plenty to choose from . We will definitely return .

Sunday lunch ,treat for fathers day... Disappointing ! asked for crunchy pork belly and requested make sure its all hot please. However todays belly pork didn't fall a part as it has in the past at the white hart. The meat was chewy and the crackling soft and chewy. Everything was luke warm... Asked for extra gravy hoping it would warm it up? But had to wait ages for extra gravy and in the end I went and collected it myself . Lots of new staff, and the service was poor... Don't think we will b back...

Staying in Somerton for a break . Very busy , very pleasant staff but appeared disorganised. Waited on by numerous people. Food nice, we felt overpriced . Pleasant ambience.

A very nice Sunday spent, they have Sunday special menu but we all ordered triple roast, perfect delicious meats. The service is nice, lovely staffs.

This is a very pleasant pub. It was very quiet when we visited; the venue is well laid out, and staff are friendly and efficient. There is a good amount of vegetarian choice, and service is impeccable.

Everything you could want, clean, friendly, ingeniously designed room, nice food, reasonable prices, treats for the dog. We stayed on our way home from a holiday in Devon and it was ideal. We're still working off the breakfast two days later! Thanks for looking after us, we'll certainly look to stay again.

Booked for 18:45. Arrived at 18:46. Admittedly 1 minute late. Was seated pretty quickly in a quiet part of the restaurant (only us in this area). Waited around 10 mins to have drinks order taken which was fine. A table of 6 were seated next to us. 15 minutes later we still hadn't had the food order taken. In the meantime the table of 6 had their drinks order taken and then subsequently their food order as we sat there wondering why on earth we had been ignored. We gave it another 5 minutes and after over 30 minutes of being sat, waiting and ignored whilst the table 6 feet away had been attended to, we decided to leave half a beer and half a pepsi. To keep my morals I went to the bar and asked to pay for the drinks - which we did. No apology, no questions as to why we were leaving or why we decided to leave. No idea why we were completely ignored, but we were. Please review your CCTV. By far the worst experience I've ever had at any pub or restaurant. You can refund me for the drinks when you get around to it as well.

one very small burger and v. small chips, one steak and chips, one childds small Margarita pizza and cup of peas, one v. small pan fried fish with three Jersey Royal potatoes and four stslks of very over cooked thin dried up asparagus with a single cream sauce...one non alcoholic cocktail, one soda... £102. Fish eater asked gor bread...stale hard cut into four white roll finally arrived.

It's a nice place a nice atmosphere and the beer is good Butcombe Rare Breed mmm, but the staff they polite and friendly nice people but so slow when a crowd of people are waiting move yourself they do it in other pubs get their money as quick as you can. Also make mistakes order a pizza to take away and it comes on a plate want to eat in comes in a box, but food is very good.

Second time visiting in a long while, but fancied a light lunch. The menu offered sandwiches, pizzas and a few other main dishes. My partner had the burger and I had the mushroom with wild garlic pesto pizza. Sadly my pizza was absolutely tasteless, an awful texture, and the pesto had no hint of garlic what so ever, and I couldn’t finish it. We did mention to the waitress that the pizza didn’t taste of anything… and they said they would pass this on to the chef. It was very disappointing. My partners burger was okay… although the bun was quite hard and was of low quality. The atmosphere was great, but sadly we won’t be returning.

Sorry to say not our cup of tea. Food very expensive and portion control very small for a 17.50 Sunday lunch. Between 2 of us 5 small Half's potatoes 2 carrots 2 parsnips and a lump of cabbage 🥬. On a plate in the middle. Expect more than this from the most expensive place in Somerton. 8 pounds for a Bacardi and 2.50 for a splash. Don't bother not Evan proper Bacardi .. Just walk on by.

Ok isn’t it, quite average really. Wait a long time to get served, nice enough drinks. Go through to eat a little bit better than ordinary.

Good haunt on a Monday when the two coffee shops are both closed... Rustic but quirky.

First time visit. Mixed reviews but we really enjoyed the food & service. Shared a starter of maple braised beef which was delicious. Main course just as good. I couldn’t manage a pudding but hubby had chocolate mousse, again superb balance of flavours. Staff attentive & knowledgeable. Will go back

Have been here many times over the years. The decor is good, the staff are fine and the ambience is cosy, even though the place is large. Its the food that lets it down time and again. The quality of the pizzas is OK, but at these prices you're not paying for OK. Pizza prices are £11 - £14.50. You get nothing else. I actually had the (rather small) chargrilled burger, with aioli etc, two bits of gherkin and a few chips - £18.00. That really is taking the mick. The quality of the burger package was good, but the portion size is lamentable.

I stayed here for two nights with my partner and dog. Very friendly and obliging staff throughout our stay, Harry was especially helpful. We had a small double, dog friendly room. It was entirely adequate - a king sized bed with lovely pillow selection and duvet and bedspread. Room was very warm despite the time of year and no heating was required. Quirkily decorated with a metal desk and drawers and some lovely old lamps. Plenty of lighting options. A tower fan was available if needed. A well appointed room, despite it's size. No room for a wardrobe but hangers provided with wall hooks, hairdryer, De Longhi coffee machine, kettle, glasses, mugs/saucers. The bathroom was large with a rain, over-bath shower. Good quality shampoo, creams and conditioner provided, along with tissues, toothbrushes, etc. We chose the deal with breakfast and evening meal voucher of £40. Breakfast choice was excellent and the full English was very good, with beautifully cooked eggs and local sausages. Prettily stacked up on a slice of toast, as per the norm today. We ate two meals in the bar area with dog in tow - not allowed in the restaurant area, no problem. We had the 'Special' chicken burger which was a little dry but the triple cooked chips were smashing. The terrine starter was very dry and tasteless, we're glad we only had one to share. The Merlot was lovey. Second night was a Somerset Pizza, cooked in the resident oven. The flavours of squash and pumpkin were a bit too similar and the base wasn't fully covered and difficult to cut. I had the flat iron chicken, which was delicious with olives and tomato base, but could have done with chips suggested as a side. If you have a dog, then there is a good pee spot in the lovely churchyard just opposite the Market Square, or the pub's own garden, to which residents have direct access. Overall a very nice stay in a character laden hotel, which was very well frequented by both locals and tourists.

We've just returned from a lovely evening away. From the fantastic welcoming to the amazing food and perfect room. We had a great time away and loved the room and all the extras within the room. The staff were lovely, helpful and very attententive, nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing and just what we needed to indulge into. Dropped in for breakfast & was given dry hard toast with unripe unable to eat avocado & cold dry hard bacon sandwich. Drinks were ok & they gave us them for free as the food was so terrible

Had a fantastic Sunday lunch, best roast for ages, even better than their partner hotel, the Kings Arms in Dorchvegas. Will definitely be going back to try the full menu.

Very good roast dinner, triple roast is fantastic. They also have a pizza oven and put together a great pizza for what’s essentially a nice gastro pub. The only problem is their poor lager selection! I don’t get why they only have freedom lager (which just isn’t great), I recently visited the Swan in Wedmore (part of the same group) and their choice was one of the best I’ve ever seen - also the Chapel isn’t bad.

Have visited many times and always happy to return. On this occasion (early Friday evening) is was lively and loud (too loud for us but clearly popular) Quietened down once the post-work drinkers left. Initially service almost non-existent (we had to get our own menus and then go to find someone to take our order). After that it was all top quality (hence 4 not 5 stars). Rob served us throughout in a timely manner. The food was largely excellent Starter of whipped feta with heritage vegetables was a little unimaginative on the “heritage” quality ; I would have expected more variety on the basic orange carrot and the cucumber. That said the coley scampi with curry mayo was perfectly cooked. Our mains were the star of the meal - gundi (vegetarian) was spot on quality. My elderly mother really enjoyed the hake and pea puree and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the flat iron chicken - really intense/rich flavours. Portion sizes were generous. Desert was white chocolate pana cotta - the least obviously sweet desert from the menu. A little more variety here would be good - too heavy on toffee and chocolate choices. All main food delivered on warm / hotish plates (a previous concern of mine was cold plates) I understand the menu changes about every 3 weeks - current selection makes this a good visit. Excellent bottle of Tinto at £30.

A lovely meal with friends. Great service and exceptional food!! The steak was huge, cooked to perfection and delicious! Very reasonably priced especially for the quality of the food. The staff really couldn’t do enough for us. Highly recommended

Easy online booking and good communication leading up to check in. Staff are very friendly, remember which room you are in when ordering drinks or food and always had time for all the customers who came in. It is busy during the day so was nice to see locals popping in for a coffee and cake, or even a quick drink after work. The room was cosy with a gorgeous bathroom and super deep bath. They provide toiletries which are made locally and sold in the pub if you ask for them. The radio was on in the room when i checked in which was a nice touch. Good range of coffee and teas. Great location if you are doing some travelling in the area. Street and Glastonbury not far away, and the great selection of local shops are a 5 minute walk. Would stay again and recommend to anyone looking for a popular, friendly and dog friendly place to visit.

This place was recommended to us by our B&B so we went in and booked a table for two for 6pm that night. When we arrived they had no record of our booking so not given table initially shown. Menu was quite varied and obviously indicated it was a gastro pub. We ordered and the staff were polite and efficient. Food however was a let down though, tiny portions although it was well presented it was style over substance. Gastro food, Astro priced so not value for money. This is not a place for the average couple/ family struggling with normal cost of living. Steer clear.

We were recommended by a friend. The menu was lovely food was great all the stuff were really helpful. Being gluten free didn't seem to be a problem Their ice cream is home made...and worth finding a bir of space for! There's a lovely rustic atmosphere there too.... This place is fantastic! We dined here on Friday and I’ve never known a restaurant so considerate to catering for my allergy. We were a large group and all agreed the food was excellent! The staff were very helpful and friendly, lovely interior and loos. Would highly recommend!

Couldn’t fault at all some of the best food we have had in ages would highly recommend and can’t wait to visit again. The food was phenomenal. All the staff were amazing so kind and inattentive, especially Rob who took time out to chat with us at the end. Good value for money as the quality of food and service was faultless.

Looking for a Saturday evening meal we arrived on-spec and received a really warm welcome despite it being a busy time. All the staff were friendly and efficient. The menu was varied and interesting with good choice. The Kohlrabi vegetarian dish proved a true delight - certainly the best vegetarian dish I’ve had and my partner’s cod dish was equally wonderful. As first time customers we were impressed. It won’t be our last visit!

We have stayed here on a few occasions. It’s the prettiest little village and the service here and the food are top draw. The rooms are immaculate.. maybe a little small . The breakfast was 5/5 and evening meal.. there is a courtyard which is charming … I will definitely return

Brilliant place! Great atmosphere! A couple of weeks ago I had my mums hen do at The White Hart, and the service and food was amazing. The service was brilliant too, I didn’t get our servers name, but they were constantly checking we had enough drinks or if we needed anything else and they were just lovely! The food as well was really tasty, and there wasn’t much left on any plates! Will definitely be going back soon!

We stayed the night with supper and breakfast. From the moment we arrived and we’re welcomed by Harry, to the attentive and excellent service at supper from Abbey the stay was magical. Room 3 is an absolute treat with character and style. The food is better than it should be - well presented and of exceptional quality. If you’re looking for stylish, friendly, comfortable and affordable - then the White Hart is everything and more.

Impromptu dinner out and we were welcomed with a smile and really great service. Luckily a table was available (would recommend booking, though) and we were able to enjoy an incredible meal. We both have dietary preferences (allergy and both vegetarian) but these were no problem when giving our orders. Service was excellent, we were looked after by George and Tania, both really great at what they do; friendly and knowledgeable when asked about the options. 100% will be back, well done!

A great find for all the family. The staff went above and beyond for us all. My son is coeliac and our server handled this with such ease, we were able to have nearly everything on the menu. We will be back very soon.

So disappointed. I booked for my partners birthday having read about the chef and thought it might be special for him. We were given a table out of the way in the bar as we had the dog with us and we were absolutely fine with that. The decor is nice and we are happy enough with our table. However we then became invisible! We were given the menus and then after waiting 20 minutes for someone to take our drinks order we went to the bar ourselves to order. The lady behind the bar wasn't particularly friendly but changed a bit when she realised we were dining there and had had to order our own drinks. The food, I do have to say was very nice and we don't mind paying a higher price for that but expect some kind of service! It was shocking! We have come away wondering what we did wrong and feeling a bit rubbish :-(. Our plates were never cleared away so we had no dessert or coffee and had to pay the bill at the counter. Big shame. Will not be going back.

Incredibly poor service.Was given menus and after waiting for service I had to go to the bar myself and order food and drinks. Food was poor for the price and no one came to clear our plates or take our desert order. The service charge is ridiculous considering I done the job of the serving staff myself. Very poor and won’t be back.

Had a lovely lunch with friends. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Sadly a glass of red wine was 11,80!!!! Was appalled at being charged this amount, without being warned before hand. I understand wines vary in price....but felt this was beyond the pail.
