Great pub with friendly staff. The owners, Colin and Carrie, have clearly been putting in a lot of work since buying it last year.

Fabulous Warm Welcome from the owners of this historic pub. Carrie& Colin were great hosts , along with their bar staff Roxy. We'd just arrived & found this gem. Spent a very pleasant evening sharing stories & listening to their plans. We'll certainly keep a eye on them regarding future self catering accomodation. We don't camp any more but great camping venue. All the best!

We made a booking on Tuesday 7th March 2017 for lunch on Friday 10th March 2017. The chap we spoke to on the phone said "yes that is all booked in for you." We arrived on the Friday. On parking the car we spoke with a man who asked if we had come for lunch. We said "yes" and he said we could not have one as the cooker in the kitchen had blown up. We replied that we had phoned and booked a table and the man replied there was nothing in the diary. So, whoever we spoke to had either failed to record the booking or had entered it on the wrong day. Not a good way to run a business. What a disappointment. We are always keen to support local concerns but this has proved to be a failure.

We arrived st 12.30 the fire was being lit and Patsy Kline was the welcoming voice - not in person! We had found a simple country pub with a friendly landlord and locals. We had pea soup and baked potato with prawns, served with a separate sauce and salad leaves. Dave Brubeck was followed by Dolly Parton and all the well known Country and Western singers. This may not be your musical choice but it certainly made for a cheerful lunch break on our way home from the Jurassic coast on the A303. I would have preferred brown bread or a roll rather than white bread with the soup, but it was unimportant and far outweighed by the good atmosphere, the chat and the friendly service. This pub deserves points for its sheer unpretentious simplicity. We'll return.

Was in Somerset visiting a friend and decided to go into this pub for Sunday carvery, they left me waiting for over 45 minutes before they asked me through to the carvery room even thought there was hardly anyone there, I went into the carvery room for my food and realised the man cutting the meat was picking his nose and wiped it on his chef whites so I left the meat and decided to have everything else, I had mash potato with veg and was very unpleased, the veg was cold and hard almost like frozen veg even though it states 'fresh', I made a complaint and they offered to warm it up for me as I stood waiting I heard somebody in the kitchen swearing saying "it's not fu**ing cold she's after a free meal the fat bi**h" then microwave pinged witch I thought was quite unprofessional and out came my food, regardless of the unpleasant things I'd just heard as I'm a 'fat bi**h' I sat back down with my food and started digging in then I noticed a long black hair in my mash potato and also something in the middle of my veg witch looked like flem, i will never be visiting this pub again as the staff are very unpleasant and I personally think it would be a health risk to even think about eating there, I had to buy a sandwich on the way back into yeovil.

But before giving up we decided to try the back entrance and it was open. No customers; we were informed that there was no food cos the boiler had broken down.So wasted 15 minutes when a simple hand-written sign in the car park could have warned us of that. And how about a sign on the front door directing you to the back entrance?Obviously cannot comment on the food.

With the departure of the previous "management" who killed the place in four months, let's hope that a fresh start can get this proper pub back on its feet. If we don't use it, we'll lose it. As a regular, it was embarrassing to see the trade dwindle as people voted with their feet. We want good beers, clean premises, good value food, a friendly staff. Let's hope the new management can deliver.

16 of us had booked a Christmas dinner here on 10 December 2014. We had each chosen our meal previously and when they bought it out we were all very disappointed. My meal was Turkey which when it arrived consisted of 2 slices of turkey (which appeared and tasted as if it has been microwaved!) it was sat on a plate swimming in thin tasteless gravy which when it was put in front of me overflowed onto the table, just awful. The vegetables arrived and the new potatoes had been boiled to every inch of their lives so much so that the insides had burst out of the skins, the sprouts were totally over cooked and the mashed swede was just a heap of lumps. When desert arrived (Xmas pudding) it was totally inedible as it has been microwaved so much it was too hard to break with the spoon. As if all this wasn't,t enough the waitress who served our meal smelt strongly of cigarettes and it was very unpleasant indeed. The majority of us had not been here before and needless to say will not be going back. When we left we caught sight of the chef (who looked about 18 years old) complete with chefs trousers which quite honestly needed a good wash. Finally the bar area smelt of a very strong Jayes fluid type disinfectant which was so strong it was not pleasant. We will never return here needless to say, but we were very very disappointed with our meal and the way it was served to us we were all looking forward to our girls night out which ended up being spoilt.16 customers and their husbands friends and family will not be eating here again.

Had a pre Christmas meal here as a group which was pre booked and pre ordered. Camembert starter was ok but could have been warmer, Salmon fine, sprouts which we think were frozen were not edibile so hard.Chocolate orange trifle was orange jelly in a wine glass with possibly chocolate angel delight on top squirty cream and 2 chocolates on top - this does not constitute a trifle. The coffee cream brulee did have a crisp top on but nobody could determine what the underneath was may be again angel delight. It was very cold in the pub no heating on and no log fire. There is no second chance in this sort of environment so things on the food side need to improve rapidly or there will be no returning customers. Also we didn't like the sticky tables, we were told this was the antibacterial spray but we have never encountered this in any other venue.

Visited marston inn. We were very disappointed. Starters were boiled soggy garlic mushrooms served on top of an uncooked piece of 'toast?' the slop was moving around on the plate when the waitress placed it on the table. My friend had pate and uncooked toast with a very limp garnish that was looking very sorry for itself. I complained to the waitress who kindly apologised and offered free desserts and said that she wouor not charge for the starters. Main course consisted of cremated chips and scampi for myself ..........with a sorry looking garnish and sausages with onion gravy for my friend. The mash was instant mash and had a very gloopy texture......a biy like warm wallpaper paste. The meal was served swimming in the gravy ......literally!!! The onion consisted of 2 slices of what tasted like nearly raw onion ????? Very odd. When mentioned to the waitress she assured us that it was the chefs own mash !! Nice. Any how I politely thanked the waitress for her kind offer of the free desserts but refused them. ( in fear of what other delights I might find)! I have been to the inn many times before but they have changed hands recently in the last couple of Months and sadly has gone down hill. Good luck to anyone wanting to eat there !! I will definitely not be visiting there again unless they change hands or make the chef undertake a cookery course.

Our local sports car club had our Xmas lunch booked at the Sparkford inn, when we arrived there we were told the kitchen was closed, and we were pointed in the direction of the Marston. On an already busy Sunday, we were not only accommodated, but welcomed and very well looked after. The carvery was excellent, very friendly staff (we can be a lively bunch), even joining in with some of the banter. Highly recommend this place.

A group booking at another local pub was transferred to this venue at the last minute. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much problem. The food (carvery) was well cooked and served hot. Sweets were very reasonably priced and good portions. I would definitely recommend this pub.

We had booked a Christmas lunch at a nearby pub for 11 people, but on arrival found the landlord had been kicked out and no food available. The girl behind the bar phoned the Marston Inn and directed us there. On arrival at the Marston Inn we were given a warm welcome and our table was ready for us.They were doing a Sunday carvery with a choice of beef or pork or a bit of both which we all had and was very nice, followed by a choice of nice desserts. All the staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. They even joined in with the joking and banter that was going on and had a laugh at our secret Santa gifts. We all agreed we would visit again in the near future,WELL DONE MARSTON INN.

We have just arrived home from a gorgeous Sunday dinner at Marston inn. Plenty of meat and everything was cooked to perfection. Probably the best roast potatoes I've ever had. We will definitely be back!

We have just visited the Marston Inn in the last couple of days and I felt that I have to write a review for these lovely people. We had a steak with all the trimmings. It was the tastiest steak I have had for a long time, and I like my steak! The staff were really friendly and went out of their way to make sure we everything we wanted. The atmosphere of this pub is warm and friendly, just like a traditional pub should be. The food is cooked freshly which is a big plus. We heard when we were there that that the landlord and landlady have just returned from a few days break, so temporary staff had been in place, hence negative comments previously. I would recommend this place if your looking for a cosy pub in the lovely countryside.

Well what can i say. It was the worst meal ive ever had. It was my husbands birthday so we were going out for a meal at the half moon down the road. When we got there the car park was full so we carried on down the road to the marstons inn. Car park was empty so that said it all. We went in and sat down to find out that half the things on the menu were not available. We ordered what was available which was awful. My husband ordered the burger which came out in two rounds of bread which we found very odd as it would normally be in a bap. I ordered chicken with bacon and melted cheese on the top. The chicken was two pre cooked chicken breasts that were that dry you couldnt even swallow it. A couple came in while we were in there and couldnt get anything of the menu they wanted and left to go down the road to the half moon. Never again will i step in that pub.

Nice pub in the middle of the country in a small town called Bower Hinton. Friendly service, small dishes at acceptable prices.

Played skittles there. A nice friendly pub and good food afterwards. Not many customers in apart from the 2 skittle teams, so quiet and not much atmosphere.
