I had mussels as a starter. 5 mussels in a lumpy fairly tasteless tomato sauce. Ok but nothing special. My wife’s slow cooked blade of beef was stunning but my lamb was a bit tough and tasteless. One of my friends asked for mussels as a main course and I understand she got the same as my starter but was charged twice as much as she had it as a main. Personally I wouldn’t have paid the extra. I don’t drink alcohol but enjoy Guinness Zero. The choice of alcohol free beer for me was very poor so I drank water. The staff were fine but who I assume is either the owner or manager was a bit curt. If you are over about 5’8” watch your head. Altogether a bit disappointed after having read some of the other reviews.

What an absolute gem. I’ve driven past this pub for years and always thought to myself I must go. Today we did and the food and service was amazing. Such a lovely relaxed setting. All staff were polite and friendly especially the young lad who served our table. We went as a table of 4, all having starters, mains and deserts. Everything was exceptional. Can’t wait to go again.

Very impressive from the moment we walked through the door. There was a friendly, professional water there to welcome us and say they had reserved a quiet table for us as requested. He was very smart, in black uniform, as were all the staff. The food was exceptional. A great deal of choice, beautifully cooked with flair and and staff were very attentive but not pushy. This is a hidden gem.

This really has to be one of the nicest places to dine in Derbyshire. The staff are very friendly, efficient and knowledgable and the food is of the very highest quality and completely fresh and made to order. The atmosphere is relaxed and calm. Certainly not your average pub but a strong rival to the very best restaurants. Highly recommended.

We visited the White Bear on Saturday 19th August & we must say it’s one of the best meals we have had for a very long time! The food was amazing, the service was great & all in all it was such a lovely evening. Myself & my partner had the Brie in Parma ham & the Black pudding scotch egg to start, then the Belly pork & the Fillet steak for main, then the creme brûlée & chocolate & hazelnut parfait for dessert. All six dishes were absolutely delicious, we couldn’t have been happier with our choices. We also had wine with our meals which was very high quality. We would 100% recommend the White Bear & will definitely be returning! Thank you to everyone at the White Bear!

I have been coming to the White Bear with my husband every year for 14 years, we have tried many other places over the year also, as I absolutely love food. We have been to Gordon Ramseys Savoy Grill in London, Marco Pierre in Nottingham to name a few, whilst both of these served lovely food it is not a patch on The White Bear. Their food is the standard to beat whenever I go to any other restaurant and I am yet to find anywhere that comes close to the succulent and mouth watering food that they serve as well as the lovely calm atmosphere within the place. The owner is so lovely too and warm and friendly. I will continue to keep going to The White Bear as I am never disappointed and look forward to the food I am about to be served by them.

I made arrangements to meet someone at the White Bear but when I arrived it was closed so I parked at the top of the drive to wait for them to make other arrangements. After a while the owner came out shouting abuse at me and swearing. Not giving me chance to explain I told him that was no way to talk to anyone to which he replied with a load of foul language .I asked who did he think he was talking to to which he told me to move again using more foul language .I can honestly say I have never met a more obnoxious person in my life

1st time visit for quite a while but the food and service is still 1st class. Perfect communication when booking on line and upon arriving were welcomed by friendly helpful staff. The menu had to much choice but decided upon the Haggis Scotch Eggs, Lamb cooked two ways rack of Lamb and Shepherds Pie and Cheese board to finish. Maria had Pate, Salmon in a Lobster and Prawn Sauce and Dark Chocolate and Orange Bread and Butter pudding. The atmosphere was great everyone having a great evening and it is a little gem that is worth the money. Had a lovely chat with the owner and it was lovely not to be rushed just taking time to enjoy everything about this lovely restaurant.

So to start I’d like to say what a great job the staff did and how well presented they were in there manners towards us and uniform etc. The food was absolutely outstanding, we had the black pudding scotch egg which was Devine with a perfect egg inside.Four of us had the fillet steak… to put it simply I haven’t ever had a steak quite like this, I had mine rare and it was absolutely perfect right the way through, the accompanying sauce was perfectly salty to complement the steak and the potato Dauphinois was the perfect side to tie it all together. The desserts were amazing! The white chocolate and baileys cheesecake was quite simply the best I’ve ever had and I’m a big fan of cheesecake. The overall atmosphere was nice and quiet perfect for a formal fine dining experience, staff were very friendly and facilities were clean and tidy. Jacob did an excellent job with wine table service, offering us a bit of the wine to taste before pouring a perfect measure in our glasses. The only pointers I could give them is that you could possibly show your staff to pour wine with the butt of the bottle and twist as they leave the glass to avoid drips on the table but that’s just me being fussy because everything was so perfect! The only bite for us was that we requested a longer wait between starters and mains but felt it was still a bit too quick! Other than that what an amazing venue with amazing food and equally amazing staff! This place deserves everyone’s visit! Prices are very well and truly justified!

Never had Sunday lunch here and what with the dreaded lock down looming we will miss eating out here for a while so decided to try it, after all, every time we visit in the evenings everything is fabulous. Social distancing and rules strictly adhered to and it wasn’t very busy so we had one of the rooms to ourselves.A larger menu than we actually expected for a Sunday as well as the traditional choice of roasts. We both had a starter, followed by roast chicken, which was lovely and came with mashed potato, roast potatoes, a selection of vegetables with a large Yorkshire pudding and gravy.Such a shame that restaurants are having to close yet again...we look forward to returning as soon as it is able o re open.

My friend and I dined here last night. It’s the first time that we’ve dined out since the 10pm closing time was instated. The food was absolutely delicious - one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time (and I made the most of the ‘Eat out to help out’ campaign in the summer!) I had the white onion, cider and cheddar soup to start, my friend had the baked brie and parma ham. We both had the rump of lamb for our mains, which was a sizeable portion and cooked to perfection for us (juicy and pink but not oozing blood); we had an extra portion of potato dauphinois (a steal at £2.50!) The mains also came with an individual dish of perfectly cooked al dente vegetables each. For dessert I had the cheese board and my friend had the cheesecake. We had two bottles of the Shiraz and the bill still came in at under £100.The tables were spaced out well, the staff adhered to the wearing of face masks, and there was sanitiser for use. All common practice these days but still there feels like there is a degree of difference in how well places manage this; The White Bear, in my opinion, is one of the better places. Our waiter, Jacob, was an absolute delight; friendly and attentive without being overbearing. There were a few tears from us - it’d been a long, hard week - but Jacob discretely kept his distance while still being visible had we wanted anything else from him. Around 9.30pm the lady who appeared to be in charge, possibly the owner, checked whether we wanted any more drinks before they closed, and just before 10pm brought us the cap for the wine so that we could take it with us.All-in-all a delightful evening. There was nothing that could be improved upon and I’m sure we’ll be back again relatively soon. Thank you all at The White Bear.

Came here as our first meal post lockdown, and was not disappointed. Upon entry we noticed the views from the patio seating area, which must be some of the best scenery in Derbyshire! We were greeted at the door by some splendid staff members who shown us to our table and was told the soup of the day and specials. I decided to go for the scotch egg to start (which was the best I have ever had by a country mile) and the rump of lamb for my main course. The lamb was cooked to absolute perfection, I could’ve cut it with a spoon! It was melt in the mouth and the sauce was sensational! My partner had the tiger prawns to start with chilli sauce and the fillet steak with bacon and Stilton cheese as a main course. Again, my partner said was cooked to perfection and was clearly very impressed with how fast it was gone! We was both very full following our main course but could not say no to the homemade chocolate and hazelnut parfait. This was the perfect end to our meal. We will be returning very soon, and enjoyed every moment.

This is an amazing place. Tucked in at the side of the road partially hidden by being on lower ground, Called in about 4 years ago for a pint after a long meeting in Clay Cross. Owned and run by a family it immediately brought to mind many of the semi rural restaurants in France. The building itself is really attractive and so it wasn't long before we went for a meal which was to be the first of many. Great creative food, faultless service makes for a special occasion. It could be so very easy to become part of the family.

Booked this restaurant for my mum's 90th birthday. As we pulled up my heart sank... what have I booked, it looked a little scruffy from the outside.Though we loved the parsley (owners might know what I mean by that, my cousin and I marvelled at how healthy it looked compared to what we grow at home.) Inside is a different story the old part of the bar is quaint with a log burner and there are newer bits to suit those that like things a bit well newer. We opted for a table by the log burner. Now I am a pretty harsh restaurant critic as you will see from some of my other reviews but this I have to rate as excellent. The food was superb, beautifully cooked, good quality ingredients and the sauces were excellent. All the food was well presented and served piping hot (makes such a change I am fed up with cold food being served elsewhere.) Two of our group started with the prawns - they were described as succulent and tasty, they must have been because no one offered to let me try one! I had the squid (I am a bit of a squid fan) and well squid is squid unless its in a stew but these were beautifully done, not greasy just lovely, tender and went down very well! Our fourth member had the black pudding scotch eggs - again I was not allowed a taste.. but he said they were excellent the yolks were perfectly cooked just runny enough to be considered "master chef." Moving on to the mains; two of us had rack of lamb in a red wine sauce - omg - tender, perfectly cooked pink, melt in your mouth lamby cream dream! My friend has a small appetite due to ill health if she hadn't been sitting too far away I would have whipped what she left! Though I haven't seen her eat so much in ages. My mum had the pork belly with sticky onion sauce well I don't think I have seen her clear a plate that quick in years! I'll come back to mum's comments. The last member of the group, Mr Grumpy, had the chicken stuffed with haggis in a whisky sauce - he loved it and trust me that is going some for him to make a good comment, he said he found the sauce a bit rich but he was in a mood so when he went outside (my instruction to him to go out and find a better mood LOL) I tried the sauce and it was excellent not too rich, he was lucky to find anything left on his plate when he came back in! Moving on .. now I don't really eat desserts but I did and had the bread and butter pudding with custard - well ring the bells of celebration it was perfect! Light, not sweet sludge like most places but delicately sweetened and not over heavy in any taste, even the custard was in my view perfect, again not over sugared. Mum had the cheesecake - white chocolate and baileys I think - she loved it. Oh I nearly forgot the home made bread with a bottle of olive oil on the table for dipping - lovely - now if there had been a pot of parmesan for me to mix with the olive oil as well I would have been in seven heaven! Too many business trips to the States I am afraid - good bread, oil, herbs and parmesan yum!Service was for me just right, it was friendly with interesting short conversations not the usual couldn't really care service platitudes. I got the feeling that there was a genuine appreciation to hear feedback there and then. The speed of service in my opinion was just right, I did not feel rushed neither did I feel slowly left too long! I had time to savour the food without seeing a rushing head popping up and down and the wait between courses gave me time to enjoy what I had just eaten, rest a bit and then be delighted to receive the next course. How this team turn out such excellent food I have no idea - very skilled and with a fine taste themselves I guess. As I previously said today was my mum's 90th birthday and she may be an old lady but as a lady who was the most fabulous cook all her life until the last 10 or so years it was always hard to find a meal that met our family standards. Today she said "I think that is the best meal I have had in 30+ years." That is a massive compliment, trust me! As a family we have eaten across the world at some of the most prestigious restaurants in the world but for where this place is and what it is I think its absolutely brilliant. Oh I nearly forgot - I am a great eavesdropper and on the table next to us who came in pretty late for lunch the plaice (I think) in lobster and prawn sauce was described as "to die for" and the Venison described as bloody good. I couldn't hear any comment from the roast chicken lady she was out of ear shot other than hearing her fret about calories!Thank you. We will deff be back and I am hoping sooner than later! Lent diet has gone out the window with a fantastic bang! Heck I am not religious so who cares about Lent thank you team White Bear for helping me break it! Now it wouldn't be me if I didn't find something to grouch about but the only thing I can find is that it was a bit cold as all old buildings are! Perhaps stick the fires on earlier? Sorry! What more to say! From a grouching person who likes to review everything from the Mandarin Oriental on the banks of the Chao Phraya to a greasy spoon in Chesterfield - well done totally recommend you.

Called in for Sunday lunch last week, (10th Feb) and pleasantly surprised. Although quiet we had a very warm welcome. The food was absolutely superb and impossible to fault, well above the standard we expected from what appeared to be quite an ordinary looking pub set back off the A61. The prawn chowder was superb (have to say probably the best I have ever tasted) and there were lots of gluten free options as the food is cooked from fresh. The short rib of beef and lamb were excellent. Good portions, great quality and well cooked.

Having driven past for many a decade at long last ate here. It won’t be long before we eat here again. The outside is not much to prepare you for the quality of the food and service. Friendly and polite staff.

Been coming here the last few years and never fails to impress . Came with my friend for Sunday lunch we both had pork which was perfect . I had the guest bitter which is top notch and my friend red wine which she particpated of a few. Always good quality and the price reflects the quality.Nice chat with Sue and her husband after.

Not visited for a while but certainly wasn’t disappointed. For mains both me and my hubby had fillet steak topped with Stilton and wrapped in bacon. The steak was cooked to perfection, exactly as we had asked for it be done. Couldn’t fault it. For starters we shared cooked Brie with pancetta and for afters we shared White chocolate Baileys cheesecake. Fantastic meal with great service. Would definitely recommend and we won’t leave it so long before returning.

I had the goats cheese and beetroot Wellington (huge portion) came with a side of mixed veg and potato dauphinois. Partner had ribeye (on a bed of mash with Bordelaise sauce and a side of veg).Service fast and friendly. Highly recommend

We have dined at The White Bear lots of times and it never fails to be fantastic. It is a quaint pub with tables set at angles to afford privacy. The menu is set out on a blackboard and the food is delicious. The service is great and the owner is lovely. It has a stunning view over the valley too. Love this place.

Great food and great service. Been a while since I went but with so many good pubs around its hard to get a good balance. Anyway, great food, okay portions sizes and overall a quality experience.

Nine of us came here on Sunday for lunch. We were initially a bit worried as we’d booked for lunch at 1pm and there were no other cars in the car park and the pub was empty however the food was excellent, a large choice from the blackboard and a choice of pork or chicken for a Sunday roast. The food was all freshly cooked and came served with individual dishes of vegetables. Couldn’t fault the food. It’s a pity that the outside area, car park and seating area hadn’t been upgraded as the views from here are wonderful

Ate here on the 6th. Friendly and accomodating, as we had not booked. Food very good with the exception that the mussels turned out to be very large and slightly rubbery. I think they may have been NZ green lips, not UK sourced. Tasty though. Cosy place with very helpful staff.

Excellent meals, cooked to perfection, served with panache. Each dish is cooked from fresh, with well chosen choice cuts of meat and tasty fish dishes, served with a selection of vegetables, seasoned with fresh herbs and spices. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are on the menu. With a relaxing atmosphere, thoughtful staff, and such delicious food, you will travel far before finding any restaurant with such an appreciation of food preparation and the serving of quality foods.

Would of liked to go to this pub for meal with friends and relatives, but seem to exclude anyone with children... just point blank we don’t accept children at this pub! Appalling for any pub to do this... I’m sure they must have a limited clientele...

Since this is one of our favourite places to eat, our friends were keen to try it...and they were not disappointed. Everything was excellent. We had the French onion soup, salted squid and Brie for starters. For the main; duck breast, steaks and the cod, only 2 managed a pud!

We visited on a Saturday evening for a Mother’s Day Treat and booked in advance. We had tempura prawns to begin with and then Seabass, Cod and Steak for our mains. They were all delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We loved the cosy feel to the pub and would definitely come back. I would say that the outside of the pub does not do the pub justice at all as it is lovely inside!

Visited here on numerous occasions and keep forgetting to review this gem of a restaurant. We love the food and service at this family run establishment. Having tried a number of starters, main and deserts I would say you are safe to try anything you fancy on the blackboard menu.

My partner and friend went to the restaurant last night 13/10/17. It s the first time we d been for a year as we recently moved away. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed as tho we’d been there last week, not only did the host remember us but remembered what drinks we had previously, a very welcoming personal touch thank you. The food was INCREDIBLE, we had the Brie starter, I had the Pork Belly, and my partner the Monkfish special for main, beautifully presented, and we both agreed we d order the same again. Thank you for a lovely evening. Highly recommend anyone to go and experience the hospitality and delightful food.

So glad we found this restaurant. My Niece recommended The Restaurant At The Renishaw to us and my family and I tried it out for Sunday lunch. The interior is nicely furnished and very pleasing to the eye. The food was absolutely outstanding and plentiful. The staff were all very friendly and very accommodating, even supplying crayons and paper for our 5 year old granddaughter. Our bill for the 6 of us. ( 5 adults and 1 child) came to £115. this was for 5 roast dinners including 2 types of meat. 1 glass of wine, 4 beers, a fruit shoot and 5 deserts. You would pay more for this at a local pub carvery and this was way better for quality and service. I highly recommend!!
