Stayed here for 4 nights in the Sycamore Cottage which was warm, cosy and presented really well. The food here is excellent, had breakfast here every morning and dinner every night. The Staff are very accommodating, helpful and friendly. It’s really nice to see an Independant business clearly putting in a huge amount of effort to make themselves stand out. I would love to stay here again.

Ah, the Peacock at Barlow—once the shining jewel of my Sunday roast dreams. But sadly, my most recent visit has left me with a slightly less rosy view of both the restaurant and the birds they’re named after. Let’s talk about the roast dinner. Now, when you’ve been promised four meats by something called "The Quadfather," expectations are high. Four meats. That’s not a meal, that’s a meat festival. I was ready to channel my inner carnivore, prepare myself for a meat-infused spiritual awakening. But what did I get instead? A roast dinner that was colder than my enthusiasm after watching the potatoes not even try to crisp up. And, as for the four meats—well, I count three on my plate, and one of them looked suspiciously like "something that used to be meat." I'm not sure if I missed the memo on the "fourth" meat, or if it was just a very enthusiastic metaphor. Either way, the promise of quad wasn’t quite delivered. Now, the real kicker? This was the special Sunday where we decided to use a gift voucher to celebrate our engagement. You know, because nothing says "we’re in this together" like a roast dinner and a side of disappointment. If I’m being honest, the roast was so cold, it could have been the icebreaker for our wedding vows. I should’ve known something was off when I walked in and noticed a distinct lack of excitement in the air—more ‘peacock feathers falling flat’ than ‘showing off’. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some of my favourite meals at the Peacock before—those golden moments where everything comes together like a well-rehearsed choir. But this time, the choir was out of tune, the stage was cold, and the choir director had possibly misplaced the sheet music. I’ll probably return, because every restaurant has an off day (and I’d like to believe the “quadfather” was just having a tough weekend), but for now, I’m left with the bitter taste of cold meat and unmet expectations. So, until next time, Peacock—please, for the love of engagement dinners everywhere—don’t make the next roast a 'meatless' miracle.

We have just stayed at the Peacock, in the Pilgrim room, as a treat, the night before my wife’s 60th Birthday. The welcome, on arrival, the room itself and the little note acknowledging her Birthday, were superb. The room was lovely, the bathroom massive and everything tastefully done. We ate in the restaurant, last night and enjoyed everything. Lovely local beer and the food was fantastic. So well presented, generous portions, fantastic service, topped off with a special little cake/ candle and chocolate message, again acknowledging her Birthday. We also had breakfast today, again faultless. We throughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend.

Also the manager at the till, forgot his name tag but he was also such a gent and made ordering easy. Thanks so much, we will be back. Ps. Super dog friendly! First time here. What a great location with fabulous views. Warm welcome. Friendly vibe with people from adjacent tables chatting on an autumnal Sunday morning. Eggs benedict was prefect. Photo shows the poached eggs after I broke them. Perfectly cooked. And there was just enough Hollandaise Sauce without drowning out the flavours. The eggs with bacon on crushed avo and sulsa was delicious. A bit too much salsa for my liking but wasn't my dish. The dessert French toast was great. Bread was thick. Moist and tasty. Might have been perfect with a side of extra maple syrup. Or maybe I'm just an greedy maple syrup piggies. Lovely pub. Great food. Picturesque location. Friendly staff. What's not to like. Highly recommend.

We came here for a family Sunday lunch. You are not able to book, but the staff were great at managing the queue and taking our phone number to call when the table was ready. I had the beef burger (happy that they now serve this on Sundays!) It was very good. 2 small patties, plenty of cheese and bacon and served with a good amount of nice crispy fries and a really lovely side salad. My wife had the roast beef which was also good. Plenty of lovely meat and lots of nice veg. Service was great. Even though the staff were rushed off their feet, they were still all really pleasant and friendly. I'm sure we will be back again for a family meal.

Fortunately there were spaces left in the car park when we arrived and one table available. It seems really crowded when you go in but it was OK when we sat down. I had the bau bun special for starters and there were two tasty buns stuffed with meat. For main I had the liver and mash special which was great apart from I couldn’t finish the mountain of mash! Good selection of beers including the home brewed ale which was great. On the expensive side for a in but probably on a par with most good pub restaurants around.

We stayed on our trip to Chatsworth House Estate. It’s only a short detour from Chatsworth House. The Sycamore Cottage is amazing. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was very modern and the cottage was very classy. Wi Fi with a strong signal right through the cottage. All the usual conveniences. The whole accommodation is immaculately clean. Central heating made the cottage a very comfortable place to stay. We had dinner at the Peacock at Barlow. The food was brilliant. Good selection on the menu and the quality of the food was fantastic. The meals were served pretty quickly as well. We had the rib eye steak and the pork belly and it was delicious. They also have their own brewery and had three local pump ales available. Collyfobble Brewery. Give the IPA a go. A full English breakfast was included with the accommodation cost. That was a great meal. The pub terrace has charming views across green fields and some stone cottages. Really feels like you’ve escaped. The only thing better than the food and accommodation is the customer service. All of the staff were so friendly, helpful and nothing was a problem. We were actually served by James and Owen on Saturday evening who turned out to be the managers! The wait staff and the bar staff were all over it. Even when it’s busy, they were helpful and friendly. It made our stay in Barlow an amazing experience. The next morning, the hotel staff helped me out with an item that I needed. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who is visiting the area. Do yourself a favour and go for the weekend. We've been visiting The Peacock since it first opened, which must be near to 10 years ago. The food was always fantastic, good portion sizes and reasonably priced. We often pop in for a drink, we really like the atmosphere in all seasons! It's also lovely to sit outside in the summer. BUT....We visited on Saturday night for food & noticed that the prices were averaging around £18 - £21 per dish. Some dishes more expensive, particularly on the specials menu. I ordered the Peacock Fully Loaded Burger (priced at £19.95), I was so hungry and expecting a decent sized burger that'd be too big to manage....how wrong was I. It was tiny. I'm pretty sure a Big Mac is bigger 🙈 The patties were dry and crumbly, cooked to 'very well-done' 🙃 The side salad was just a few leaves & the fries were few. The other dishes that the table had were - bangers and mash, curry and chicken souvlaki. Again, all quite small portions. We understand that the hospitality industry has taken a huge hit & the cost of produce and wages etc has risen, however the quantity and quality of the food does not align with the prices that are now charged. I cannot complain about the staff, most of them are pretty young, but they're attentive and polite. The pub is a lovely place, with a lovely atmosphere. However, I think we'll be giving it a miss for now, considering that the local area has other lovely pubs and restaurants that are more wallet friendly.

Visited for lunch to celebrate my mums birthday and was very impressed. The service and presentation of the food was excellent, the wait time was very reasonable despite it being quite busy. The children’s meals were a very generous size, as were their desserts. Two of the three mains that we ordered were perfect and I’ve never seen onion rings the size of the ones that accompanied the steak! I wouldn’t order the souvlaki again, but that’s just personal preference. Desserts were also delicious and it took a lot of will power not to buy more of the amazing looking cakes to take home. Well done peacock, keep it up.

This pub is very smart and modern with an attached brewery - great. Friendly helpful staff. But food very over priced and poor quality. We had two fish pies £40 +. Both dried out and lacking in flavour. Also, cottage pie in what I would describe as a large cappuccino cup £20, again too long in oven . We were here for dinner and a stay over in your Admiral room. Firstly amazing staff always smiling and helpful despite being mega busy in the restaurant!! Food was very good . The open gardens were on so they had more customers than usual and I was told they had done 700 covers on Sunday!! If I was to be critical the noise was really really loud in the restaurant which spoilt it as we couldn’t talk . However the positive is that it’s popular because it’s good!!!! The room was spotless and the bathroom was very good even has little lights that came on near the floor. Next time we stay we are going for a room upstairs as I want to have a view . So I will be returning. Lovely breakfast and lovely waitress with red hair and nice smile. Thank you for being so nice to us. Very very good service . Thank you Jill and Gerry from Suffolk.

Decided to go here for my birthday meal. What a shame, as the food was terrible. We had the Sunday roast beef and roast chicken. The beef texture was like mush and tasted not like beef, the roast potatoes were raw, Yorkshire pudding were stale and the veg had stalks & stringy bits. It was unedible and the waitress never even asked why all 5 of us had left the majority of our meals. We asked for a box to take the meat for our dogs, expensive dog food! So disappointed as I thought this was going to be a lovely place to eat. For the price you would except better.

We often go the the pub quiz on Thursday nights. Excellent atmosphere, great food and lovely staff. Had a very uncomfortable experience a few weeks ago when a family became verbally abusive towards us when we asked them not to research questions on their phones. They said they were emailing, but many witnesses, including staff, observed them googling answers to the quiz sheet questions. I am so grateful for the staff for looking after us after the barage of abuse we received. We felt physically unsafe until the staff stepped in and the manager dealt with the abusive family. This was such a deviation from what is usually such a fun and fair night. Thank you everyone at the Peacock at Barlow and thank you David Box for such an entertaining quiz!

Have been to the Peacock a number of times over the past few years. The dining area is lovely with great views and the service is good. However friends and family have been aware of the prices creeping up and today we all felt the prices were over the top eg. £20 for cottage pie?! It is no wonder that the restaurant was quieter than we have ever seen it. There are a number of very good eating places in the area who charge significantly less.

Have been here many times and really enjoyed it until today. I was there with my puppy meeting a friend and was told by a member of staff to not have her on my knee as all dogs have to be on the floor. I don’t think I would’ve minded but I was there yesterday and no one said anything! She only said it due to a table next to us complaining about it to her however, members of staff were repeatedly passing by our table and she decided to say something when we’d finished our food and she had been on my knee the whole time we were there so, how come she didn’t mention it when we first arrived? She said it’s “the owner’s policies”. If you have set policies in place please make sure all members of staff are aware of it, as I know that one of the members of staff that was serving my table yesterday was a member of management. It’s not a big deal however, it was enough to have put me off from returning again.

I’ve been here in the past, although not for a couple of years, and suggested it to my friend as somewhere to celebrate her birthday. The food, fish pie and crème brûlée for both of us, was absolutely superb and I was left feeling cross that I’d not eaten here for some time! There was a wonderful atmosphere, particularly considering that we were there at lunchtime and not in the evening when places are often livelier. Reservations aren’t possible but the pub is fairly large and it seems that would-be diners can usually get a table without too much difficulty; we certainly had no problem at peak time on a Friday. The location is beautiful too, especially when the weather is kind and you can make the most of the stunning views. With such a high standard of food and service, coupled with a buzzing atmosphere, this place is highly recommended.

We were very surprised that the chicken dinner was approximately £20, which is quite over priced in our opinion and on top of that it was an extra pound for a yorkie pudding! All the menu prices are high. It's the first time we've been where the restaurant was virtually empty at teatime, perhaps this reflects the increased prices?

Beautiful location with lovely views. The rooms and amenities are second to none. The staff are friendly, engaging and make it such a lovely place to stay. We had lunch and dinner, and then the breakfast (which was Inc in the room price) and I can't fault the quality. Will definately be returning. We booked direct through their website, as the so called cheaper booking apps, were more expensive. Unfortunately we only stayed for one night so I cant comment on the surroundings for things to do, and to be fair the comfort of the room made it difficult to want to leave it!

Expensive and the on-site brewed beer is like home brew. Friendly staff and good food though.

Brilliant service with a smile on Mother's Day. Thank you for looking after us so well. The pub was so busy and, as always, you were all really helpful and could not do enough to make our visit special. Sunday lunch was perfect. Thank you

We very much enjoyed our stay here except for one thing. The staff were all very friendly and helpful but what doesn’t fit with the general upmarket feel of the place is that all meals (including even breakfast) have to be ordered at the bar. This rather lets down what would otherwise be a faultless operation.

Rang up to ask if they had any last min space as we were greeted with a automated message saying you cant book? We was told that we would wait 5 minutes. When we got in there they said 20, however only luckily waited 5. Once sat at the table, we waited 10 minutes for menus and wasnt told how the sunday service ran so didnt know how to order food or drink. After 15 minutes we were told we had to go up and order but they didnt have any cauliflower cheese, lamb or pork! We all ordered chicken. When we got the cutlery it was slammed down and was dirty and looked to have old food on it? We asked for new which came after we got our food. When the food arrived, it looked completely different to others around us, yorkshire pudding was palm sized compared to the gigantic ones on others plates. Others around us had also received cauliflower cheese but we didnt! We didnt bother asking. Then half way through one member of our group pulled out a long hair in the food, at which point we all stopped eating. We was checked back on before this happened but all the staff to be rushing around and didnt seem like they were botherd about if everything was ok woth the meal just seemed like they had to do it to avoid complaints. We soon left before our table had even been cleared. The pub has so much potential and we were very disappointed in the standard of the service and meal, the staff seemed more interested in getting tables in and out. We wont be back anytime soon, we hope this was a one off and just a busy sunday which to some degree we can understand working in hospitality ourselves.

First time at The Peacock. It was recommended by a friend of ours, and we are so glad he did Everything about the visit was great, apart from a table of really noisy diners . No one's fault of course. The food and service was superb and the view was gorgeous. We will be back.

While in Derbyshire for a weekend my hubby & I decided to go here for a meal on the Saturday night, we weren’t disappointed. We rang to book a table but the message said no bookings but to turn up anyway as we wouldn’t be waiting long if a table wasn’t available. In our arrival it was very busy but we were told we would have a table in approx 20 mins so we went to the bar and got a drink & 20 mins later we got a table. You really won’t be disappointed, the food was lovely & plentiful, the service was quick & friendly. The prices were reasonable

A fabulous 2 night stay at the Peacock, we stayed in the Phoenix room celebrating my wife's birthday, the room was fantastic has everything you need and more, the bathroom with its free standing bath and walk in shower were amazing. The room itself had fantastic views of the countryside. The pub had a great atmosphere with great food and a great choice of drinks, a special thanks to Owen and Cathy and all the staff for looking after us. We highly recommend the Peacock Mark&Diane Huddersfield 🙂
