Attended today for a wake that had been booked for at least 2 weeks. We arrived at 2.30pm. Food was booked for 3pm. We were advised at 3.01pm by a very energetic man with a silly grin and his arms waving all over the place that we would not be getting any food as the chef (also his husband) was still asleep, despite him trying to kick his ar*e out of bed three times. I honestly thought that he was going to shout "just joking" which would have been in bad taste but preferable to the reality. No resolution offered at all. Just to reiterate THIS WAS A PRE BOOKED WAKE. Unprofessional, unsympathetic, completely disrespectful.

great central location with free parking on site We were visiting family in Shipston and we normally stay elsewhere but no availability so booked the Bear . we were given a very friendly welcome and we were in a lovely cosy room (room 10) which was spotlessly clean and had a great shower and comfortable bed .Slept very well .Its a very old building and our room sloped down wards which was authentic. Tripped on the step right outside the door but no harm done . We requested to take breakfast away which was no problem. Breakfast was delicious and the lady serving was very friendly and helpful on a fine point the stairs and hallway to the rooms could do with a lick of paint and a refresh but this didn’t bother us too much We paid £100 for b&b and it was excellent value for money .We will definitely book in again thank you

I can honestly say I think it would be difficult to better the roast beef Sunday lunch. A lot of places overcook beef and it ends up being very tough indeed. The beef here was tender and lots of it. I think there were about 6 different vegetables, with well cooked roast potatoes. The service was excellent. There were 12 of us and the food was piping hot. Others had the liver and said it was also excellent. Add in a choice of real ales at the bar and it really was the perfect Sunday lunch. 10 out of 10.

We are 4 school friends of a certain age meeting up for lunch and were really impressed. Yes, the decor looks a bit tired, but hey, the food was amazing, and the service was excellent. We couldn't have been better looked after in a Michelin restaurant. It was Friday, so 3 of us had beer battered haddock and chips. One had scampi and chips, and they were 'proper' chips. For pudding, 2 of us had crumble and custard. Be prepared for a large portion. One had Eton mess. Unfortunately, one of our party was dairy intolerant, and they could not supply a pudding for her. However I would highly recommend the White Bear for lunch.

We've been to the White Bear for Sunday lunch on numerous occasions and so I approached our' Important occasion visit' today with some trepidation and a niggling worry " would today's lunch be up to the standard of excellence we've come to expect?" I nearly lost my nerve and ordered fish and chips but then changed my mind abruptly back to my favourite Roast Beef with ALL the trimmings . Today thankfully it was just as good if not even better than usual if such a thing was possible..The Succulent Beef hand carved and tender ,a Towering Yorkshire Pudding was cooked in the meat juices but so fluffy it was practically floating off the plate .Mashed potato cunningly concealed beneath Roast potatoes, green beans Carrots, parsnips,Cauliflower Cheese, Shredded Cabbage and extra gravy . And an attentive and helpful young waitress..Top Marks Again

Quiet in the restaurant but the bar adjacent was buzzing. Starters of prawns and cheese soufflé were the highlight. Soufflé cheesy but little air, so not light or rising. Main courses of chicken burger and steak were nice. Local Donningtons ale was excellent. Service friendly, but there was no dedicated waiter - the barman served. We were forgotten after the main course so didn’t get the chance for desserts.

After struggling to find any place serving lunch in moreton in marsh, drove to Shipton as a last option for lunch in the Cotswolds. Although on 1st glance the White Bear looks a bit down beat, the gracious host and the wonderful food plenty made up for it. Sports bar is separate which makes the dining area pleasant and warming. Food potions were on the larger size and the quality was top notch. I was almost glad Moreton had no pubs serving and affordable lunch. Well done the White Bear on being a properly run English pub that does food.

I may have written a review of Sunday lunch here before but not since Emma the new landlady has taken over earlier this year. The Bear had not been doing food for a while - well, not proper meals. Anyway we tried it this last sunday - booked in for 1.30pm and the restaurant was busy - most tables full. We shared deep fried brie starter which Emma very kindly and without asking split onto two plates.. there was quite enough for 2 and it was delicious ! then I had roast beef which came with mash, roasts, carrots parsnips and Yorkshire on the plate with cauli chees and cabbage on the side ..absolutely fabulous rare beef, Veggies perfect. the extra Gravy piping hot and plentiful.Hubby had fish and chips which was equally good. Emma is the perfect host ..calm and cheerful - helpful and efficient. Cant wait to go back!

We live four miles away but had never eaten there before. This is another pub/restaurant in the town square which we've been to, but it's having a refurbishment at the moment. Which meant we discovered the White Bear!In short we've been missing out, it had a personal feel and the food was very good, perfectly chosen vegetables that were slightly crunchy and all the more flavoursome for it. We choose two courses for £14.95, shared a starter, a main each and shared a dessert. All too often these days you get hooked in by the shiny, hip looking gastro pub and miss out on gems like this underneath your nose. Sadly the White bear committed the cardinal sin which was to overcook and ruin a rib-eye steak. Also the steak was thin and firm. I myself am not a cook but I can do a steak to a tee so why can't the White Bear, its not so hard really.Anyway there was a little redemption with the generous sized cheese board and the Red Merlot wasn't bad so they pulled one star back.

A little too pricey for what it was, especially as the plates were cold! The meat was good and the food served very nicely but personally there wasn't enough jus/sauce. Service was good and the atmosphere was lovely. Two of the meals weren't as warm as expected, whereas the other was nice and hot, hinting at two meals waiting while the other was finished. Heard they have a new chef though so hopefully this will tie up the loose ends and make a mediocre meal wonderful! Good luck :)

As a veggie and not being able to find the menu online, I was a little worried whether there'd be any choice for me. It turned out there was a choice but it was between having the veggie main or the veggie starter. We were welcomed, quickly seated and menus brought out promptly. I chose the only veggie main option which was a goats cheese tart effect. As it was fairly quiet our food didn't take that long and was not too bad when it arrived, even though goats cheese is fairly disgusting. £10.50 it cost me to eat something I didn't like/really want. The service was very good throughout, although it bordered on the persistent side of annoying around bill paying time. £66 for 5.Looking back, nothing really stood out about the experience. It was all a bit ordinary with minimal choice of food. I probably won't go again.

I always baulk at the thought of going into a pub for lunch as the meals can be huge and high in carbs which I cannot eat in quantity. However, having been warned that there might be a bit of a wait for food, I don't think that twenty mins is too much if you've had warning. Due to my needing something without chips, I went for the goats cheese on flat mushrooms with tomato Salsa, de-licious! My husband found the traditional fish and chips pretty good too. First experience here and very impressed with the food.Very reasonably priced so I was unsure how the steak quality would be for only £16 but it was honestly divine! The meat was like cutting butter - so tender. Cooked perfectly as well (which isn't something I experience too often as I eat mine blue) the blue cheese sauce was so delicious.Only downside was the white wine we ordered wasn't chilled and the waitress knew very little about the menu. A little more staff training would make it that but better. Thank you!

We booked The White Bear for Sunday lunch to celebrate Mum's 70th birthday. We were a party of 10 which were easily accommodated and the staff were friendly and attentive. We were all very impressed by the food, which was prompt and superbly cooked. We are all looking forward to an excuse to go back again.

Ate out at the White Bear recently. Had only planned on staying for a quick drink. The new owner have made it lovely, warm and inviting and the service and food were both wonderful. I will definitely be returning.

Went here for a late lunch on Mothering Sunday and we weren't disappointed; friendly service, great food, lovely atmosphere (with a pianist) and good value for money.

Under new management again! New managers only been here a couple of weeks but pub is much improved. It could hardly have got much worse. Staff still the same although our favourite, friendliest barmaid has returned to university until easter. The other staff do seem happier though. On the whole much improved and looking forward to trying new menu by new chef.

I visited this place a couple of years ago and enjoyed the experience and food but the White Bear seems to be a different management now and wasn't what I anticipated. We went here recently and did have a meal, the food was average, the service seemed very unorganised and we had to ask for everything all the tine rather than be waited and served correctly. It may have been an off day for the staff but certainly not a good experience for us.Living in Chipping Campden we have an excellent choice of pubs, restaurants, and hotels to choose from, this place does need to be mindful of what is around them.

We stopped for lunch this afternoon. Quite a surprise as it is an old pub on the village High Street. Much to our delight, we were both pleased with our steak baguette and pork baguette. The trice fried chips were delicious if a bit diet busting! It is a Donnington Brewery pub so it serves many of Donnington's specialities. The bar server drew a beautiful pint of Guinness! We live about 35 miles away from the pub. We will definitely return!

The White Bear has recently been refurbished by its new owners, we went in with friends on the off chance and were given an extremely friendly welcome. The chef who has only been there a month came out to see us and discussed the menu options. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and with not too long a wait. One of our friends use to run a restaurant and for him to be impressed, which he was, is praise indeed. We will return next time we are in Warwickshire.

Tempted in by the look, simple, quaint and looked ideal for homemade cooked food...... Well thats where we went wrong. We entered, ordered from a small selective menu. The food was dire! My chicken wings were piping hot, along with the bowl so think the trusted pop pop ping was used!! Garlic Mushrooms I do have to compliment Iceland for their contribution. The Burger was shambolic, once I stopped laughing at what they had served me. The fish and chips surprised me as it was almost the same colour as my burger. The chips were reheated but the frozen peas from birdseye were good as usual. The "Sticky Toffee Pudding", was infact the third course to be cooked in the pop pop ping and was infact a golden syrup pudding. Not one course was eaten in full by my partner, even on an empty stomach! Overall very very disappointed as next door the pub looked cosy, full of atmosphere and the plates filled with freshly cooked ingredients in an oven etc... wish we had gone there and not wasted money on the food that was served to us. Poor poor poor!!!!!!!!! Service didn't even make up for bad food!

Seeing some of the reviews here prompted me to add one of my own. I can't comment on the food, not having eaten there, but the bar staff are great, there's a good choice of beer (Pride, Doom Bar and a localish light lager at the moment) and a lovely roaring fire. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Shipston.

We called in here for food, ordered starters which were ok,wanted steak, was told they had no steak, so we asked for Burgers, one chicken one Beef, They were just awful, the buns had just been defrosted and were freezin cold, the Chicken burger consisted of chicken strips put between two freezin cold buns,I asked to see the boss who was sitting having a drink, and was told he was to busy, So he sent over £10.00 !!!! to make up for the awful experience we had here, never again, avoid at all costs,

We visited this pub/ restaurant on a visit to Warwickshire and being charmed by the barmaid, Helen, who was praising the food decided to book a table for that evening. Gave our order and waited for this fabulous food to arrive! It did Roger had a very small piece of fish accompanied by mushy peas, which he hates and as the menu said peas we presumed garden peas which he then asked for to be told that there was no other pea stocked so he asked for carrots same reply. Only mushy peas. I took a look at the menu absolutley no other vegetables.I had ordered the steak pie supposedly homemade and delicious what arrived was a car crash on a plate. 5 thin smal strips of grey meat, tough as boots a sauce which was full of cauliflour and sauce as thin as tea. I sent it back and requested the lasagne to be told in exactly these words "You'll have to wait 15 minutes as chef makes it fresh" No apolagy just very curt and who can cook a lasagne in 15 minutes. The lasagne duly arrived with its 'garlic bread' 2 thin slices of buttered baguette, but only on one side, which as it cooled, dried out around the edges so it had only been microwaved. The lasagne was tasteless and cold in the middle, obviously from a deep freeze and again microwaved but not properly. We were then asked if we wanted the bill, no offer of coffee or desert, although the lady at the next table had apple pie. It was about 11/2 inches wide and 1/2 " thick so nothing lost there. The bill arrives and we have been overcharged by a pound, When it next arrived the bill had gone from £21 to £29 we sent the bill back and next time it came it was £13.50 so we paid this and left.So if you want a disasterous meal go here, if you want to eat in the area go to the White Hart in Newbold

After having heard some positive comments about the food thought we would give it a try. I ordered Chilli which looked very grey and watery with no garnish and little taste. My husband had the chicken and Stilton pie which looked ok but was watery and tasteless and poorly presented. Felt the meal Overall lacked imagination and had a very 70s feel with everything served with chips and peas. Service was pleasant but very disappointed at value for money.

Great pub to take in if you cannot find one closer to the races at Cheltenham. Proper small Market town but the locals make you feel welcome. Would recommend.

We didn't stay the night or have any food. We did pop in for a quick one having raced round the supermarket. We live fairly close by but have not been for a while. It used to be a wonderful real pub. Unfortunately someone has ripped out some of the old features and replaced them with some cheap painted wood. The resulting look is 'tacky tart's boudoir'. They had three reds by the glass - my partner chose an average Chilean Merlot - not nasty but not great. I had a pint of London Pride which was plain awful. Whoever 'did' this pub up has deprived the world of a premier watering hole. Shame on you.

We were staying a village not far from Shipston and found this wonderful restaurant entirely by chance. We booked a meal for the first night of our stay and both of us had absolutely fabulous meals at a very reasonable rate for such quality. Not only was the food wonderful, the service was outstanding. We liked it so much that we returned the following evening without a booking. Immediately we were recognised and made to feel at home. We ordered different dishes and were just as pleased with the meal that we had.If ever we are back in the area we would return and probably look at the possibility of staying there as well.

We arrived at 1pm to a lovely welcome from two young waitresses. Who attended to our needs through our 3 hour stay. Millie was excellent and attentive as we are regulars but she was new us as was the menu. Which she explained to us with a very experienced manner. We were wined and dined and looked after very well and we had a wonderful catch up with friends. Thank you!

Long drive from Scotland & on arrival we found out no dinner is on offer. Were told we could order in a takeaway and they'd provide plates & cutlery - no thanks! Went to a village pub two miles away. Bedroom was tired & visibly dusty, as was the area for breakfast - how can you not notice the cobwebs in your windows with the sun streaming in??!! Breakfast was basic continental but only 1 apple in the fruit bowl? Almost laughable. No staff around at first, then 1 lady & her two dogs appeared in the breakfast room, saying she was only the housekeeper but did we need anything? We asked for more fruit....but there was none on offer. I have never stayed in anywhere more Fawlty Towers than this! Absolutely terrible.

Nice place. Staff were friendly and polite. Stoned floor, usual tap beers and a few real ales available. TV on the wall showing sport. Tables and chairs were adequate, descently decorated. Enjoyed my visit.

Of course, the weather was wonderful, which helped the ambiance but we had a lovely time at The Blue Lias today, sitting outside to eat, watching boats going past on the canal. The food, fish and chips, was basic but good quality and well-cooked. The staff were pleasant and helpful. There were plenty of clean water bowls for our dogs, which I had to fill so the water was fresh.
