We went there for a Christmas meal which we had booked three weeks ago only to be told that we had to book it three days in advance, for the Christmas menu which obviously was very disappointing as there was no mention of this on their website so we ordered from the menu and the meals was very disappointing very small, very expensive, so we decided that we was going to have a Christmas pudding again to be told we had to order this three days in advance. Disappointing service as the lad who came to take our orders for drinks did not know what drinks they were selling. Also the service seem to be so slow as well. It made a very bad evening overall would not recommend

First visit since the refurb and it is much more inviting and modern. The menu is quite pricey but for an evening out with friends we were more than happy to pay. The evening didn’t get off to a great start due to the service. The waitress didn’t know if they served Malbec and so we asked her if she would mind asking - twice she returned having not found out and we don’t actually think she knew what we were on about! She then brought a bottle of wine to the table and when we asked for glasses for the second time she said we would have to wait a while as they are all in the dishwasher! Never heard such a thing and we persuaded her to bring any glasses so that we could at least start a drink. The food was very nice and enjoyed by all. The scotch eggs were particularly good but the chips were quite fluffy being the thrice cooked variety! Overall, service let our experience down. We felt rushed to order, having to ask for more time four or five times over the ordering or drinks, food and desserts. It would be better if one person serves a table and then one wouldn’t feel so hassled by multiple servers coming to the table to ask the same question. Definitely some training needs to happen for the service to match the level of experience the pub is trying to achieve.

Visited for lunch today and it was lovely to see such an effort made in the decor - lovely bar area and dining room with log burner roaring (just what we needed in this weather!) and white linen napkins set the standard and expectations. The wine was served in a beautifully thin glass and with both Neck Oil and Landlord on tap I was very happy. The menu looks great - not a hint of Brakes Brothers and plenty of ‘on trend’ options (Nduja features twice) - we ordered fish and chips and the pie of the day (Lamb and Wild Mushroom) both of which were excellent. The pie came with perfectly seasoned green beans and a hearty side of mash and Lamb gravy. Interestingly, no salt or pepper on the tables, an experience which I have only recently had at Hambleton Hall. Staff are great, still finding their feet but are lovely. All in all, I would highly recommend for good quality food in a pleasant setting. It’s not trying to be an Olive Branch nor a cheap eats pub and the owners have clearly spent time to gauge the market. It feels that they have the balance right. We run the risk of becoming regulars!

Very disappointing ! The refurbishment and decor is first class and the young staff very friendly, but very inexperienced. It was freezing cold and we persuaded them to light the fire which was lovely eventually after being smoked out. The food how ever was very disappointing. Butternut Squash lacking in the Rissotto and was a very small portion. The Aunergine and pickled salad with chilli had no dressing or chilli in sight and as for the Fruit Mousse with Lavender shortbread…well, it was thrown in two blobs on plate with one small biscuit that had been broken unevenly by hand and “scattered round plate”. The presentation was dire and it looked like some the cat had thrown up the way it was served. The Chef walked past us when he was leaving for home and didn’t speak. Overall experience was exceptionally disappointing but the young lads working were very friendly and polite. Won’t be rushing back

When we arrived we were shown to our lovely room which was basic but you don’t need much. There was a clothes steamer which came in very handy! The food was absolutely amazing. We had an evening meal, breakfast and a Sunday roast before we left. Make sure you try the roast, it was stunning. All reasonably priced too, you pay for what you get which is top quality meals. The staff were so welcoming and accommodating, even giving us a lift to the wedding venue in their car! We really thoroughly enjoyed our stay and know exactly where we will be staying when we come back in future.

Super refurbished pub. Tasteful decor and nice ambiance.. Food was very nice, however at 11.50 for a starter of scallops, we only got two, but what we had was just delicious. Fish and chips were a good portions and very tasty. Denver steak came out with just Potatoes and no veg, you have to order that separately, again a little pricy. All food was enjoyed, presentation was beautiful and the waiting staff were excellent, friendly and not intrusive. Good selection of beers and wine. Coffee was delicious. Lovely, we will visit again.

We came for lunch today and had some of the best food we have ever eaten. For starters we had the bread and nduja scotch egg which were both so full of flavour. Then for mains we had the fish and chips, monkfish scampi and pie of the day. Every mouthful was absolutely delicious and whilst the portions appeared a little small we were left too full to finish all of the food we had ordered and it was well worth the money! We really hope this restaurant maintains this standard of food and continues to succeed as we will definitely be back again soon!

Had a meal last night (Wednesday 19th july) and it was absolutely superb, the staff were amazing, attentive buy not over bearing, the atmosphere was relaxed even though there was a big group in the room to the side, Adam (owner) is a great host and nothing was too much trouble. The food was top draw, we both had the lamb scotch egg, the flavours worked so well, my only criticism as a chef myself was it was a little dry but that is purely personal taste. I had the had the fish and chips and I must say its the bet piece of fish I've had in a long time. My partner had the pie which really looked the part and the meat just melted. Would I recommend the Whichcote Arms? 💯 percent yes!

I ordered fish and chips. The plate arrived but no chips in sight so I initially assumed they would be arriving in a separate dish. Then I realised that the fish was sitting on top of the chips. Having removed the fish there were a grand total of 9 chips, chunky but the longest was no more than two inches long and 3 of the 9 were doing a good impression of parmentiers! It also came with a pot of crushed peas and a similar sized pot full of tartare sauce - I'm pretty sure that in volume there was more tartare sauce than chips. The fish was delicious but the meal was ruined by the "trendy" presentation.

The steak special on Saturday nights is a good deal for £10.95 including a good portion of chips, onion rings, tomato, peas and mushrooms. The menu boasts locally sourced meat but I have to admit isn't very exciting and is a mostly typical pub menu ie lasagne, scampi etc. We didn't think our starters were good value - around £5 each for one deep fried Brie from frozen and a heap of fried mushrooms swimming in overpowering garlic oil. The owners seem very friendly and the place is a local pub but service for dinner was average. The chef served our food to us and disappeared back into the kitchen. We waited for assistance with condiments, sauces etc but didn't see any more staff until we were finished eating (restaurant was empty until another party came in as we were leaving). Would go again, hopefully the feedback is useful.

En route to another destination, we decided to stop for a meal in the first hostelry as close to lunchtime we found. Arriving in the pub, we were met with a nice smile and greeting from the Landlady. We only had 35 minutes to eat and get back on the road and explained this to the proprietor. Confident she could meet our expectations she quickly took our order.A few minutes later, we were led though to a somewhat sparse dining room, with nicely laid out tables. Having settled the chef brought out our meals well within time. They were piping hot, and having already been told the sausages and veg. were all locally sourced we were keen to eat. We were not disappointed, very tasty and very well cooked. At just over £22.00 for two meals and two drinks it was very good value and we were finished and back on the road in 30 minutes.Highly recommended, if this is the normal standard of food, for a slightly off the beaten track destination pub, do give it a try.
