This is how pubs should be. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere incredible. To top it all off we have never been made to feel so welcome in a pub on our first visit and that includes the varied yet all pleasant clientele input.

First visit after the long closure. The pub has been beautifully renovated to a high standard. The bar is now in a much better place. The restaurant (was the kitchen) looks really nice. That's the pluses. Unfortunately the menu is minimal whether for lunch or for dinner with only about half a dozen options on each. The lunch menu consists mainly of toasted sandwiches (with accompaniment? £15 - £16 each), some starters off the main menu and possibly one other choice. The evening menu is also very small and apparently changes weekly. Unfortunately none of this information is available on line as there is no website and a social media blackout, so if you went there for dinner you would have no idea what the menu would be. Also, even though it was a mild day it was cold in the pub. We went for lunch and had two starters off the main lunch menu with a portion of chips, a pint and a medium size wine. Price was £34. If this pub is to flourish changes will probably need to be made because presently I don't think they've got it right.

Never in the field of human pub culture was so much owed by so many, wishing for the rarity of an adult pub environment free from the deleterious effects of other people's kids, to so few. A very gratefully received policy adopted by the owners, and congratulations all round on standing up for your right to run the place just how you see fit. I hope the fruits of your labours, in the restoration and reopening of this pub, keep you well for many years to come. Facebook whingers are perfectly free to take their child-based roil to any of the thousands of other establishments pandering to it.

Great food. Great that there are no screaming kids under 14 years which is the reason I went. It has a more adult vibe and for that I loved it. My daughter and I had another tasty roast dinner today. We had Roast Beef and Roast Pork with Cauliflower Cheese. Served by Danny and Faye who were most lovely hosts and made us very welcome. The Sunday roast (2 for £20) is a great deal with roast potatoes parsnips carrots cabbage homemade Yorkshire pudding and gravy. My only criticism is allowing dogs in the area where people are eating! I had to bite my tongue when witnessing other diners feeding their dog from their plates. I get that this is a dog friendly pub and am happy to see dogs included, just not where you are eating. Perhaps I’m in the minority? Anyhow, 3 cheers to the staff and the chef.

We stopped off here after visiting a friend, we only wanted lunch not a big meal. Ordered a baguette each, the baguette was freshly baked and it comes with either chips or crisps, very filling. We washed it down with coffees, these were lovely too. Will certainly be back. Yes the dogs did come over whilst we were eating but having dogs of my own, I was not put off in the slightest. The two ladies working behind the bar and bringing out the food were both friendly and welcoming.

The Wheel is a classic village Inn, just down the road from the Church. The only pub in the village, in fact the only business in the village. It provides good, well cooked food and ale with a warm welcome albeit the place is slightly run down and in need of cash injection for refurbishment, all the staff do their best to please which is a big plus. The biggest let down however, are the two Alsatian dogs which have the complete run of the place, they even have their own section of the public bar where they lay on the seats and keep their toys. (The cutlery is kept here to!) They tear around the place sniffing at everyone and are just unhygienic and not the thing you need when trying to enjoy your food. Do yourself a favour and keep them out of the public areas. Remember not all people are dog lovers and Alsatians have a poor reputation. You are running a business, not a kennels.

We booked a table here on a recent weekend break in the area, the main advantage being we could bring our Golden Retriever inside. Despite the restaurant area being quite small, the food was absolutely delicious. the three of us had Roast Beef, and every element of the plate was beautifully cooked and very tasty. The meat was tender, the Yorkshire and potatoes crispy and greens crunchy. The staff were so friendly and it was easy to get their attention- they really wanted to help us and make sure we were enjoying our meal. The thing that won our hearts was our dog, who hasn't been eating much recently, was given a bowl of meat scraps which he wolfed down!

The scotch egg was most definitely one of the best I’ve ever had, even the red stripe was better than usual but maybe that was because we had spent the day cycling so turned anything alcoholic into nectar. The chef was also lovely and said his hellos, and provided some local tips (cute face which also helps). We were walking the Pilgrims' Way on one of the hottest days of the year, and had already done more than 12 miles when we wearily stepped over the threshold, to be greeted with cries of, "We've got customers!" What a great way to start lunch! We were given an entire room to ourselves, drinks (and second drinks) were served as a matter of priority, we signed our track and trace details, and then were generally fussed over as we chose our food. Good yeoman fare, freshly cooked and generously portioned was eaten with relish, and there was even time for another drink before we headed off to Wye for the last five miles of the day.

My partner & I booked in this evening to have a Sunday roast & I must say it was very nice. It was our time visiting after we’d seen good reviews on their Facebook page so thought we’d give it a try. It was 2 courses for £14.95pp which we thought was a great deal. We both had roast lamb which was very yummy! Lots of meat cooked to perfection, roast potatoes, parsnips, veg, stuffing & a yorkshire. The food was cooked very well & we both described it as a real family, home cooked meal. Everything tasted fresh and we fully enjoyed it. The only thing I would recommend if I had to be picky is slightly more gravy & maybe it could be a little thicker. But that’s just personal preference & it certainly didn’t ruin the meal! Unfortunately I was too full for my pudding but my partner had apple & raspberry crumble with ice cream. I did have a few bites & it was delicious! Overall we had a really nice dinner, the staff were friendly & we would love to return again to try something else off the main menu. Thank you very much.

Where to start?! We opted to have Christmas dinner here on Christmas Day as I’d read good reviews about this place. BIG MISTAKE!!!! There was nothing Christmassy about the place. After waiting 10 minutes at the bar to be seated, James the manager pointed to a table in a dingy corner. It hadn’t even been cleaned and reset for us. One of the servers came over and gave us all cutlery then threw 5 cheap crackers in the middle of the table. Starters came out which were ok but our Christmas main never came out until 4:35pm bare in mind our starters were cleared at 3:20pm. The dinner was vile!! The sprouts were solid, I swear they’d just been peeled and chucked on the plate raw, I had a shoe string slither of carrot and 3 small roast potatoes that certainly weren’t roasted at all. We complained and were told “That’s just how the chef does them”. They said they would replace our sprouts, a server returned with 4 (still extremely undercooked) sprouts in a bowl. There were 5 of us at the table. The dessert was of poor quality and one of them had a hair in it, the mince pies were cold and cheap and the cup of tea my gran was served was stone cold. When we got the bill we’d been overcharged by £12 for drinks we didn’t have. We sat down for the 3pm sitting and we left the table at 6:30pm because that’s how slow and terrible the service was. My daughter and her partner left at 5:30pm as my baby granddaughter had had enough. So they never even got to finish their meals (not that they missed much). All in all an absolute disgrace and shambles. The chef should be ashamed of him/herself. I’ve emailed twice now to discuss this and the manager hasn’t even had the decency to reply (He was quick enough to reply when we were booking and bringing custom to the pub).I know we’re not the only unhappy customers as another family were talking to us about the whole mess. Thanks Wheel Inn! You ruined our Christmas Day and charged us £60 each for the displeasure. We will NEVER return or recommend you to anyone.

After reading good reviews and having had a couple of lunches we decided to treat ourselves to the Christmas Day dinner . Unfortunately from the outset it was obvious that they had overstretched themselves as there was no one to serve behind the bar .When we were shown to our table no effort had been made to make it feel festive.....no tablecloth or table decoration and the only extra was the cheapest cracker I have ever had !! On to the food .....no bread roll offered and no bread with the prawn and salmon cocktail.Lack of vegetables with the main and what were served were not cooked !! Three sprouts like bullets ,undercooked cauliflower and I can only describe the carrot portion as a slither .Clearly there were timing issues and after waiting nearly an hour after having our starter not acceptable .After eating our puddings ,which were nothing special we decided not to bother with the coffee and mince pies . Overall my advice to the landlords for next year would be to stagger the sittings ,have more staff ,three members of staff not enough to give a good customer service ,more effort into the table decorations and to ensure there is plenty of cooked vegetables.Paying £60 per head this is the least you would expect .

I came here with my family to sample the roast dinners I had seen lovely pictures of on Facebook. I had never been in the pub before so wasn’t sure what to expect. There was a lovely big car park and seating area outside which is ideal. However what I didn’t expect was how “dog-gy” the place was. I’m not a lover of dogs full stop but on entering through the door (with a sign saying dogs on leads) I was met by a big dog off the lead albeit friendly (not that I stroked it). I was a little taken aback at how cramped all the seating was along with the aroma of wet dogs. Luckily we was seated in a separate area further round the back. This was fairly pleasant and empty and we were served promptly. The food was ok not amazing but nice enough. The downside again though was the dog that trotted on in whilst we were eating and starting sniffing about our food and feet. This to me is not what I want when I am trying to eat. Each to their own of course and some people are more preferable to this than others. All in all a very pet friendly, nice enough place, friendly staff and ok food. Just not for me. X

The breakfast is at the top of the price range at £11.95, but it was cooked beautifully and the ingredients top notch. Great Coffee too! We had a great time and will certainly return. An excellent Bikers retreat!

We visited yesterday as won a three course meal for 2! The only meal available on a Sunday was roast dinners... we had the calamari and the onion bahji scotch egg to start, which were nice! The roasts came out hot and were good-sized portions.. not the best roast I've had, but the adults roasts were £15 and kids £10, not bad for the price! The ice cream sundaes were really good, we all left clean plates, so always a good sign!
