Lovely unspoilt village pub with no loud music blaring. The bar was busy with people having a post work drink and as it was early not too many eating. Our meals were lovely. Couldn’t fault them. Quick and efficient service all served with a smile. The steak was cooked to perfection and the chunky chips were awesome. Will definitely be returning.

Very nice carvery on a Sunday, choice of three meats and a good selection of vegetables. The usual menu is also available on a Sunday if you fancy something a little different. The staff are polite and efficient despite being busy, well done!

I am really sorry to say this but our meal was dreadful. Chicken and mushroom pie with dry pieces of chicken no sauce, the mashed potato was also dry and tasteless more of a smash. The mixed grill tasted of cleaning products. The only meal which was enjoyed was the scampi.

Lovely village pub serving excellent food. Large garden with play area for the kids. we will be going back and think we will be regulars.

First visit. Food quality good. Value for money very good. Only table available was poorly lit & could not read. Other tables sectioned off and not allowed to use. They do not book tables so could make a wasted visit. Staff were 'take it or leave it'. Pity.

There food is always excellent. I keep coming back here for there salmon dishes ;) they change but always nice. My partner ends up with burgers 🍔

Good food friends with young kids they put up with us and good food so 7/10 average and good nothing too special so good suggestion

Returned here after a fairly long absence for a birthday treat. My wife had her usual Sirloin Steak whilst I plumped for the Chilli Con Carne. We were both extremely pleased to see that nothing had changed for the worse since our last visit. The menu has changed slightly but you still get a great value meal in friendly, welcoming surroundings. Looking forward to our next visit in the new year.

The end of the road indicated that the road was shut and to follow the 5 miles diversion which we did only to find out that the road past the pub is where the closure begins so you can drive through the diversion. We were sat quickly and our orders taken.... Today I had the chicken wings and salad with peri peri sauce, this starter was for a brief minute the best I had eaten in years until I tried my wife's pate starter..... Both superb and well worth the £5 each spent.... The peri peri sauce was outstanding. My main was the Steak and kidney pie with vegetables and mash, again 10/10 and again great value for the £10 paid. I thoroughly enjoyed it, lovely taste and the pie was full of steak pieces. My wife however did not enjoy her fish and chips and left most of it. All in all 3 dishes were unbelievable and 1 let it down. The menu is varied and the Christmas menu is available..... £62 which is excellent value. One of the most relaxing pubs I've visited. Visited 18th November 2023

Probably came on an off day. Here is my list of what was wrong 1. Restaurant roped off, told we couldn't Dine in their , no seating anywhere else so they had to open it up. 2. Waited age's for our food. 3. When we wanted to change crushed new potatoes to mashed had to pay £2 extra. ( disgusting). 4. Salmon was a small portion and the wilted spinach was not worth it, just one wilted sprig. Should have been served on a plate with vegetables. Also chicken chicken was over cooked and dry. 5. Only one sweet left on the menu. 6. Owner was doing cooking and obviously not a trained chef. 7. Big advert on doors advertising for staff, obviously this is why thing's have gone down hill. 8. Wouldn't complain while ther because one of our friends doesn't like anything like that. 9. After our experience won't be going back in a hurry.

Very welcoming and accommodating pub, who we called to see if we could watch the Lionesses in the semi-final of the Football World Cup. They put the match on for us on a large TV in a seating area, and we settled in from when they opened at lunch. We all had several rounds of drinks and some bought lunch. The staff were great, and some locals either weren't bothered or quite got into the match. However, several were particularly rude, with derogatory comments about women, 'it's not even rugby' was heard, and so on. However, this just reflected on those individuals, and no way spoilt our walk interval. Thanks to the staff. It is a lovely pub.

Very busy pub, food and drinks a table for 4. Rack of ribs in BQ sauce chips,mushrooms and onion rings, bottle of Pino for the ladies 2pints each for the gents. Barnsley lamb chop which is enormous and similar accompaniments as ribs, very succulent. Good service, clean and friendly. Have been back again last evening, just as good.

first time back since 2019 100% better now than back then all 5 meals were superb no complaints from any of us home made pies were delicious as were all other meals, great value for money also great selection of drinks defiantly wont leave it as long to visit the next time.

This place is the best pub ever I highly suggest the burger and you can get some melted cheese the chips are perfect 5 stars it shows photos of how it used to look aswelll!!!

Another fantastic meal here again. They never disappoint. Food is just perfect and the staff are always friendly. The only bad side of the wheel and compass is the parking. There is just not enough of it. We were lucky and found a space so was expecting it to be busy but it was wasn't ( It was in the Garden) This made us wonder how many times we have left without checking before.

We went as a celebration of a wedding Anniversary and especially for the Sunday Carvery. the food was delicious and the service was great,. especially when the staff were so obviously mobbed! The place was really busy and it was obvious the locals think of it as THE place to go for Sunday Lunch. I have to agree with them, they even went the extra mile to find a Blood Orange Sorbet for my Dairy and Wheat allergic Mother in Law! definitely worth a visit.

We used to use this on a regular basis, then COVID struck. Saturday evening about 5pm had a beer and medium pino glass of wine,reasonable pricing. Ordered Rack of ribs with fries,choice of salad or veg. Barnsley lamb chops with fries dish of red wine/rosemary sauce veg or salad. Piping hot,well presented both very tasty. Plates cleared quickly. Awful staff, very rude when ordering and when food came out, food was adequate, didn’t have empty glasses taken away, didn’t get asked if food was okay, didn’t get asked if wanted desserts! Terrible experience very disappointed

We went to the Wheel & Compass last night & had been many times previously. I ordered liver & onions which was nothing like I had had there before quite tasteless by comparison. My husband had the large mixed grill & I queried at the end he had received no kidney it later transpired he also received no sausage on his plate. The member of staff who I spoke to duly went to check with the Chef & basically came back & said the Chef assured her everything was on the plate, A( we are not blind) & B( I would not have said anything had it been there as I am also not a liar). We should have queried it on receipt of the food but as we had waited ages we were all very hungry. Basically I was made to feel like a liar which I did not appreciate & her tone when saying to me well basically whats a kidney worth 0.50 pence would you like 0.50 pence sarcastically in front of everyone at the bar was not how I should have been treated & was not appreciated If this is the manner all of your customer problems are dealt with I am not surprised one bit that you are having more problems lately, Do your staff need more training in this area? I personally think they do as the only person they did not wish to upset was the Chef! Customers should be made to feel more valued in these trying times by both management & staff & this was most certainly not the case!!!!!

Visited here for lunch today with my sister and sister in-law we had a very nice meal and an excellent pint of Banks's. But we had to eat our meal's with our over coats on as did other customers ,there was no heating on and no log fire on the go the temperature outside was 0 degrees needles to say I will not be visiting again during the winter months. Must try harder

Once again I had the undoubted pleasure of taking a group of friends to the pub to enjoy their Christmas Party menu. Offering either two or three course meals, the pub required us to pre-order our food. Once that was done, we sat back in the decorated surroundings and let the staff get on. The welcome was warm, the service attentive and friendly and nobody was about to be disappointed. The choices for starter were fairly evenly spread with pate and prawn cocktail the most popular, although those having soup were equally complimentary. Turkey was the overwhelming favourite for main course and it arrived with roast potatoes and parsnips, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing and a pig in blanket. A nice touch was each customer getting a sauce boat of gravy. Seasonal veg including sprouts were provided for each table. For those not ready for turkey, steaks were cooked to taste. Christmas pud or cheese board were the popular final choices but, amazingly, the pub still offered four desserts of the day with cream , ice cream or custard. The biggest problem was making the choice. Finally we enjoyed tea or coffee with mince pies and the chance to sit, chat and digest. There were no hints about needing to clear the tables and the lovely atmosphere prevailed until the end. Over 20 having lunch and not a single grumble! All we can say is "Thank you" and "See you next Christmas."

If you want a traditional friendly pub with good food and beer, then this the place to go. Their homemade chicken pies served with great chips and properly cooked vegetables are exceptional. We visit on a regular basis and are never disappointed

Had a lovely meal last night but spoilt by the fact that social distancing is non existent! People sitting on stools around the bar,table too near the bar area. You couldn't get passed without physically holding onto someone!! Customers totally breaching entrance and exit doors to go out for cigarettes!!! Sadly will not be returning or recommending☹

Absolutely amazing, the staff are so friendly, the food was to die for, all our steaks were cooked to perfection, the beer was lovely and Cold, and all social distancing was in place which made the experience even better Absolutely perfect.

Cracking little country pub in lovely surroundings serving good quality home-cooked grub at reasonable prices.

Revisited after a break of 12 months. 4 of us had a tremendous meal. Food was plentiful with large portions. Staff looked after us very well. A superb location for an evening meal.

We returned to this place after an absence of several years. The place has been seriously, but sympathetically upgraded and will go back on our "go to " list. The steak here was the best tasting that we had had in a long time - all was freshly prepared to order and seriously tasty. The young staff are attentive and interested, making the whole experience one that we will repeat soon.

This pub used to be one of me and my wife's favourite places to dine but it went down hill over the years after the owners left. The owners now have new people running the pub and it is just like old times. So glad it's back to it's old self .

Brilliant service, fab food and the atmosphere was amazing! Couldn’t have wanted more for our Christmas Day dinner... even catered for my children that didn’t want anything off the starter menu and double checked with me over my 8yr olds food intolerances. Definitely another visit next year!!

We all met up again at the Wheel and Compass and we decided to go for the special which was a meal with a bottle of wine for 2. We went for the Rump steak and had peppercorn sauce. We also had a pudding. The steak was excellent and service fantastic as normal.We will return.

Come here many times over the past couple of years (@ least twice a month), have to say we've never had a bad meal. The meat is always quality, the veg is always cooked to perfection, and salads are always crisp. Can't fault the place in any way. They have a really nice beer garden, and the toilets are always spotlessly clean, and smell clean, unlike many pubs. The staff are very friendly and attentive, There's plenty of parking too.The food and drink are very reasonable, I couldn't recommend highly enough.Well done to the owners and staff. Keep up the good work.

Three of us had a big mixed grill each,24oz.Really enjoyable, the meats had been cooked freshly when ordered and each different meat was cooked perfectly,nothing overdone and we could taste the different meats, they were of a decent quality. recommend the pub (good beers, well kept too )

ordered 2 meals and a 2 drinks and payed by card , thought it was a bit expensive , had to go back to the bar 3 times to get sorted ,overchargesd by £16 , the first member of staff blaming other staff , the second blaming the till the 3rd sorted , no apology, apparently four extra drinks had been added too the table !!!!! cancelled the food and headed for the red lion, not good enough by any standards

This is a lovely village pub, staff are really friendly. We ordered at the bar and sat in the restaurant. I had the pork steak with sage and apricot stuffing and whiskey and apricot sauce, in a jug, new potatoes and mixed vegetables, this was amazing, very tasty and presented very well. Decor very nice will look forward to eating here again.

I hadn’t visited for a while after a disappointing meal almost a year ago but this time I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon. Met with family and we shared a starter of Brie wedges which were delicious and a great portion to share. I had a homemade lasagne which was very tasty and lovely garlic bread to come with it. Other dishes ordered were the seafood platter which was beautifully presented and a great variety of seafood and a curry of the week which was Chicken Madras and my nephew said this was delicious and the side of chips went down well. We sat outside it was fairly busy but a great atmosphere and service throughout was great. Will definitely be back again soon.

Visited here on a Sunday looking for a decent meal after a day out. Was pointed out in this direction due to the fact that the pub we went to told us that they was serving food all day and they had finished. What a lovely meal. We arrived about 5.10 on sunday only to be told the carvery had just finished, however they could just about fit us in. The food was perfect and the bar staff and the chef were so nice and pleasant to talk to. As we was having our dinner they then started the evening meal so like someone said they serve all day and due to the amount of people inside it was obviously a good and popular pub. Thumbs up all the way.

We’ve visited the Wheel and Compass twice now for food. The first time we order black and blue burgers from the specials board. Absolutely delicious. Chips crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

We met as a family having earlier paid our respects at the church to an extremely much loved and missed family member. This is perhaps a third visit here. We purchased 15 adult sized meals and 4 smaller children’s meals and at least 3 rounds of drinks. Upon leaving we gathered into the small seated area which was unoccupied. Just to say our family farewells. I was quite offended in how one member of staff advised that children were not allowed in this area she promptly pointed to the sign which during last 3 visits we hadn’t noticed previously. Perhaps be a bit more accommodating and thoughtful when large groups arrive on mass as to why. Certainly be mindful as to how you speak to customers who had indeed spent a considerable amount of money at your premises. Food ok, play area for children not sure if this pub has new owners or management team. Certainly not as accommodating as previous visits. Two of our family members also work within the same industry. The children are all well behaved, always supervised. Always understand about the considerations of others but the dining area was not full to capacity.

The most delicious beef Wellington perfectly cooked and juicy together with four different vegetables and four dripping roast potatoes. Washed down with a couple of pints of the finest Pedigree all for £20 ,who could wish for more!

not the best meal we have had here ordered the gammon egg chips when it arrived i found it was chargrilled which is not to my liking i wish they would have this printed on the menu chips were very nice mushroom also chargrilled my wife had the stuffed peppers etc which was also not the best

Just returned from a wonderful evening at the Wheel and Compass, Weston by Welland for my Dads 89th Birthday. The staff here are amazing and the home cooked food is to die for....but be prepared as the portions are very generous but you didn’t hear us complaining Drinks and wine prices are really competitive and the surroundings and decor are fab. We were in the private dining area which was lovely, comfortable and roomy. I really recommend trying the food and drink here if you’ve not yet visited. 10 out of 10. Thanks to all the staff for making it such an enjoyable experience. Xxx

Went one lunchtime, quite quiet for midweek. Has been refurbished, nice furnishings and clean new toilets. Ordered 2 main meals and 2 sandwhich options. The main meals were a good size and cooked/presented well. The sandwiches were full and lovely fresh bread, good value for money. Big question, would we go again - absolutely yes! Keep up the good work, well worth the ride out!

Their food is your average pub food which is fine, you get what you pay for! The service was friendly and polite, the young staff were lovely and I think the pay at the bar system is great.

Visited before and left poor review over poor meal , Visited again yesterday and had an excellent meal , a carvery roast , with hot plates , good roast pork & Yorkshire pud , the potatoes and vegetables were superb . The meal could not be faulted and I can highly recommend the food and service .

Met up with a couple of work colleagues from a number of years ago who drove up from Bridgend. Food was superb as normal and the service gets even better. Nothing is too much to ask from the staff who just get on with any request or change of menu as and when required. The visit was on a Tuesday evening and there were not too many people in the pub so everything was top notch yet again.

Not my first visit and certainly there will be many more. Warm welcome by the staff and the cosy log burner,beer which is always excellent ,food which is always served quickly ,freshly cooked and to a very high standard not to mention really good value . Can’t recommend highly enough.

Thank you for a really lovely Christmas Day lunch. We were a table of 9, ageing from 3 to 70+ and everyone of us was really pleased with the whole experience. The food, ambience and service was excellent. It made for a real really relaxing day for the whole family.

We have used this pub quite a few times over the past year. The prices are very reasonable for food and drinks.

Met with a group of friends on a Sunday late lunch and found a table all ok. Very slow at the bar and lack of knowledge when asking for advice about mixers to go with their gins on the gin menu. Again slow at the bar when they took food order. My friend ordered a salad which was fantastic and she thoroughly enjoyed it I must say. My steak was very poor. I asked for medium rare with new potatoes and peas and that’s literally how it came. No thought or presentation skills compared to our friends other dishes. The butter wrappers had melted on the hot potatoes with my steak so were useless. No steak knife I had to go to wait at kitchen door and ask for one. Carvery was just average there are much better not too far away. It’s a cheap and cheerful venue and the food and service reflects this. Better options close by for a few extra pounds you can get a lot better.

Perfect location, if you love the countryside... in the heart of the Welland Valley surrounded by fields, farms and livestock. Delicious food, beautifully presented and tastes divine...especially the chips (and the chicken & chorizo pie - WOW!) You get plenty and it's good value too!! Great selection of ales and gin.... loads of gin! : ) Polite friendly staff... what more could you ask for? I love this pub, and visit regularly!

We hadn't been here for over a year, being frequent visitors previously, to find the pub has been refurbished, nice layout, lovely friendly staff. Great pub grub from excellent menu. Superb range of great beers & ales. We will definitely be back soon.

This place is stunning. The bestest staff and even better drinks and food. Very well priced and what can I say SODA WATER IS FREEEE. Very close to nearby towns and the views are superb. Free parking was blissful just never checked if they had free WiFi. A gentleman walked in 5 minutes after us and was the kindest man I have ever met. Goes by the name of Chris. He was so talkative with everyone and he made my night. All in all a superb pub. A must visit

Went for a birthday meal back in May 22 of us for a Carvery. Keep going back. Lovely family friendly pub, fine for couples too. Great food & Great Sunday Carvery!
