3 of us came for evening meal 2 burgers and a salmon The food was ordered and took 45 mins to come after we had to chase it Burgers meat did not fill the brioche bun and was around the size of a plum fries were hot and little amount of cheese the burger was tasteless and boring and bland burger was sent back offered something else but all meals so back I was not prepared to try anything else the salmon was overcooked and sauce wishy washy and half of it left again bland abs tasteless Disappointing to say the least we came here as the reviews were 4+ stars I would NOT give this food any more than 1 star Service was polite in ordering and drinks came quickly but the delays in food reduced the stars awarded The atmosphere was fine nice pub but cold no fire was lit so only 3 stars Would I come here again NEVER shame as nice location but shocking food

Family 60th celebration on arrival we found it very welcoming and the general layout perfect for any small medium or large gatherings to cater for. We nearly all went for the carvery . Nice quality meats on offer, fresh vegetables large yorkshires. Nothing left drying out on the hot plate just fresh !. The dessert/ puddings certainly lots to choose from so a double thumbs up to the Thornhill Arms

It’s not terrible, but it could definitely be better! The food is pretty good, desserts are a treat. The times I’ve visited they don’t seem to have enough staff, they always seem to be rushed and there is a long wait for drinks. I don’t want to be too negative because it’s a nice looking pub, and the manager/landlord does try. It just needs a few things tweaking and it would be a lovely country pub. I won’t rush back, but I will visit again.

We previously visited here for a carvery in May and the service was shockingly slow, but was told they had staff sickness. So giving it the benefit of the doubt we booked again….. never again. On arrival the young waitress was lovely, took our order for a carvery and 45 minutes we was still waiting. Numerous waitresses wandering in and out of the room, so I don’t believe the wait was due to staffing, just very bad organisation. We left without eating and sadly won’t be returning.

Staying at a local hotel and passed this place en route and said looks worth a visit. Lovely meal - piping hot and very very reasonable. Our food choices were just scrumptious - tomato soup, breaded garlic mushrooms, fish and chips and halloumi with ragu and pesto. Service was excellent.

Friendly service in a nice pub in the village just a short walk from Rushton Hall where we're staying. I had the vegetable lasagne which was delicious and my partner had the fish goujon sandwich, also delicious. Really we couldnt fault it, the food arrived in reasonable time, decent portions and nice comfortable setting. Worth a visit if you're in the village.

We went for lunch as a family - utterly disappointing. We waiting 2 hours for starters (small plates) one of them was chorizo skewers which were literally 4 pieces of chorizo on a skewer on a plate no garnish or sauce or anything. Then main meals came out and 2 had chicken curry which was dry and more of a biriani but not mixed.. ham egg and chips meal - the ham was half fat. the staff overall just couldn’t be bothered they were basically thrown the plates down and when asking them for anything they walked off. We did ask for vinegar which never arrived. Overall bad experience, wouldn’t go back which is a shame because it is a beautiful pub.

Disappointed, we went a few weeks ago and the carvery was very good, today however a different story and strangely almost identical to the last review. The young lady serving on the carvery did you no favours , she begrudgingly carved meat , some of it end pieces and dry , quantity poor especially for the men in our foursome! She really wasn’t enjoying her job and had quite an attitude What a shame / a restaurant relies on good staff , as well as its food / won’t be back - sorry!😞

Went with a party of six for lunch. Booked the table for 12.30pm. When our order was eventually taken for food we were instructed there would be a 20 minute wait. We agreed this would be ok. Two people had starters which came out in a reasonable time. Garlic mushrooms very tasteless and wouldn’t recommend. Pate was nice. By 2pm no main courses had arrived. After querying they came out. All were edible but not very tasty. Mini cod was not very good at all. Strip of cod and 8/10 hard chips. Had better elsewhere and cheaper price. Definitely not the same standard as once was. Did feel sorry for the waiting staff as not there fault. Used to be a nice place to eat but unfortunately I wouldn’t return. The pub was not as busy as I’ve seen before and served quicker. After complaining about the long wait, after being told 20 mins, they did give us a reduction on our bill so grateful for that.

This place has gone downhill for Sunday carvery since I last went. It is the only Sunday carvery I've ever been to which rations the roast potatoes. 3 bits per person, you're not allowed to help yourself. That's not even 1 whole potato. They were also very variable. None were very well roasted and some were undercooked and hard. The pork was pink. I know pork can be pink, but it did seem undercooked. I don't mind crisp veg, but some of my party also felt the nearly raw style veg was undercooked. Top marks for roasting the carrots, but drain the fat off, they were sitting in grease. The beef and the Yorkshire Pudding had very good flavour. It's probably the best tasting beef and pud I've had out in a while, so a real mixed bag. You'll pay £15.50 for the carvery, there's no need for the potato rationing.

Before I rant. The food is delicious. But.. This is definitely NOT a carvery. Avoid it. It's just a normal Sunday roast. They are very funny if you ask for seconds, considering this is a "carvery" because that's what a carvery IS. The younger staff (some of)are awkward when you ask about it. Honestly, like you are stealing their food and that it'll come out of your wage. Rude girl behind the servings area. Again, is acting like we are stealing and not paying. Unpleasant. Went on Tuesday for their carvery night, which is all you can eat although it didn't really feel like it. You wait at your table until you are told you can go up. The big ticket items are like the meat, yorkshires and roast potatoes are served to you and you spoon the veg on. One guy asked for more roast potatoes and the server had to check with his colleague that was OK as they only give out 3 tiny ones. You probably could ask for more on a second visit but would you need to be called up again, just all seemed a little confusing after being told be the lovely Georgina that it was unlimited. Turkey was nice as was the gammon, beef very dry. Chocolate bread and butter pudding was very good indeed. If you look at my reviews I don't think I've ever left a negative one but people had told me this was good and I was disappointed.

Save your money and go somewhere else. Unfortunately on this occasion we regretted visiting. Whilst I understand it is an old building we found ourselves so cold and actually sharing the candle on the table to keep us warm! The starters were all lovely however the mains did disappoint. My wife ordered sausage and mash, the mash was like it was mashed with a spoon and was so lumpy and zero flavouring. My daughter's lasagne was so bland and awful. My other daughter's Alfredo was amazing as was my Thornhill arms burger despite the bitesize bacon portion and small portion.

Very average meal, not the Christmas treat we were looking forward to. I wanted a dessert but couldn’t face another long wait. The two lovely girls looked very sad and worn out and seemed to be the only ones doing the best. The desserts took as long as he main to a point we were going to cancel , they arrived to more disappointment, to what looked like a sloppy melted cheese cake , and burnt winter berry crumble with dirty cuterly. We complained to the barman to which he replied ...I will let the chef know . No change on the price still paid full price for something that wasn't worth it . We went to Thornhill arms for Sunday lunch with the family. My family as meat eaters they thoroughly enjoyed the carvery and the biscoff cheesecake pudding was a highlight for the table. From a vegetarian perspective, there were multiple options on the main menu including a nut roast option with the carvery. This was unfortunately were the meal didn't deliver as the nut roast was a poor accompaniment to the carvery. It was an overly sweet mixture of beans, raisins and Mexican flavouring which didn't suit the roast dinner. There were also some struggles receiving the correct food and drink options but this was due to a new staff member which can be excused given everyone needs to start from somewhere. We would happily go again but would choose our vegetarian option more carefully!

Only for them said ‘sorry they had forgotten about the single dish and that’s why we’re not ask to go up!! By this time my patience had worn very thin, yet one of the older members of staff just wanted to argue with me, no apologies!!! Shocking!!! At no point did anybody check back to ask how was the food and again after waiting we had to ask for the plates then the empty glasses to be cleared from the table!! Will not be going back any time soon which is a shame as the food was not that too bad and some of the young staff were quite good.

Even though we had booked, and the girl could see the table she sat us on was not set, we eventually, on our way to get our Carvery, had to ask for the table to be set. At the Carvery I requested just gammon and was shocked when the girl placed two thin slivers of meat on my plate, not even full slices of the joint, just slivers, I requested more and she did add two more thicker slices. Very limited options, weren’t told they didn’t have certain things until actually ordering, brought wrong dish to table and left one person without food for over 10 minutes, starters were meagre, food was genuinely Wetherspoons standard and in some cases not even as well thought out. We arrived at 1pm for Sunday lunch, our drinks order was taken when we were seated. A work colleague also happened to be there at the same time, arrived 10 minutes after us We had waited 45 minutes and still hadn’t had our order taken. My colleague had his order taken, ate and left before anyone had come to take our order. We eventually had to press the table buzzer 20 minutes after ordering the starters, so now over an hour after arriving, a lady came and told us one of the starters wasn’t available so we had to reorder We had asked if one of us ordered off the menu that we would still eat together if the rest of us had carvery and they assured us we would. They brought my dads meal then told us to go up to the carvery, which was a 15 minute wait, so my dad had ended up eating alone at the table and then had to watch us all eat. No one came to top up drinks the whole time we were there, we ended up going to the bar, which we don’t mind but a heads up would have been helpful as we had sat around waiting and wondering for ages The food was okay but nothing special, definetly not worth the 2.5 hours wait for 2 courses. Overall service needs to be improved.

We booked for 7.30 and arrived at 7.20 and were shown to our table a few minutes later without being able to order drinks at the empty bar We were told they would come to the table to take our drinks order later. 15 minutes passed - no one had arrived so I went back to the empty bar to order drinks and again was told that the drinks order would be taken from the table. Eventually, a clearly overworked lady arrived to take both our food and drink orders. She started by stating what they didn't have. Beef lasagne, fish, and one other dish which I can't remember, and although the menu had a large burger section - they had burgers but no brioche buns to put them in. My wife had intended to order beef lasagne and didn't fancy the veggie one, my friend's wife wanted a burger and couldn't have one. None of us fancied the pie or other dishes on offer and so we politely informed them that we would leave and find somewhere else to eat which we did. There was no apology for the lack of menu choices which we had intended to choose and they didn't seem to care if we stayed or left. We won't be back.

The carvery was really good and the service too. Not keen on the bland pop music in the background.

Shocking service from staff! Food nothing special and rather over priced for the portion sizes. Avoid if looking for a nice place to eat without leaving hungry!...

We visited on a Sunday, to have the carvery. We had been out running errands all over, and realised it was late and we were starving, we found the pub on google and decided to give it a try. It was getting on to 3:30 when we arrived, so we thought we’d have missed the lunch rush. When we arrived we were met by a young woman in her late teens and an older lady with short grey hair in her 60s(?). The young woman greeted us and was polite, softly spoken and professional, the older lady was flat rude and clearly didn’t want us to be there. She fussed about what an effort i’d be to accommodate us, but ultimately told us we could have a table but in a short sharp snap told us we should have booked on a Sunday… what are we supposed to do with that information now we are here? Either you want our money today or not, because with a welcome like that, who would go back? I worked in hospitality for many years, across various types of restaurant and pubs, and I’ve worked with people a quarter of this woman’s age who had more awareness of how to treat people. To make a customer feel so unwelcome upon entry, and then also to stand about by the customers toilets clearly bemoaning customers begs belief! Such an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. We were sat in the bar surrounded by empty tablets, with only one other table with guests eating. So the accommodation had already been made for these, and there were several tables still free, WHAT WAS THE ISSUE? The young woman who served us was lovely and friendly, as was another young woman who took our drinks order. No one told us we had to be called up for the carvery, it was printed on the bottom of the menu and luckily my partner was paying attention as i was confused as to why we were just sat waiting. It was a fairly long wait to be called up but the carvery was okay. The meat and the nut roast option were good, but some items could have been better (the roasties were over cooked, and the red cabbage was smokey which was not to my taste as all). Over all not good enough to out shine being made to feel such an inconvenience. We would have given 3 stars, but since visiting we’ve been told by friends, and seen other reviews, about this rude older lady. This means its regular, management must be aware of it and clearly don’t care enough to sort it out! With that in mind, we don’t think the business deserve leniency in a score and so, our honest review is 2 stars.

Good service, pleasant and polite. Restaurant well kept. All let down by the very poor fish cakes. Frozen, brought in rubbish. Shame. Spoilt the place completely .

Went for Sunday lunch, place fairly empty-asked to be moved nearer to the carvers as had a hip operation. Waitress came back after a while and said that it wasn’t possible despite there being lots of empty tables in all rooms! Food was ok but for some reason there was no crackling on the pork, why? Left after an hour, still lots of empty tables- what sort of booking system doesn’t allow some flexibility to move two people who were regulars? Lost two customers as we won’t return.

The Thornhill arms has always had a reputation for good service and quality and our latest visit didn’t disappoint. The staff are friendly, the food is good quality and not overpriced. I particularly liked the fact that we were not ripped off for our soft drinks which is common practice for many restaurants and pubs. I booked our meal via the “open table” app which made the whole experience very easy.

My family went to the pub for Sunday lunch, the food was good, the atmosphere was good however the service was not, we were served by a bunch of children who clearly have not been trained to communicate effectively with other humans in this environment. Child's meal came out piping hot which was not ideal. If they sort the staff out then I'd have given it an extra star

I've been here several times in the past and have always found the food to be 'OK' (just about) but nothing really that special. It's all pretty basic fare and to be completely honest I've never found their meals to be that much better than Wetherspoon's, I'm afraid to say. In its favour however the pub itself is lovely and has a nice cosy atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and attentive.

Food 1 Service 1 Ambience 1 Booked for fathers day. Included i would be bringing a pram in the booking. Issues with my table firstly as there initially wasn't any room made for my pram so i felt like my notes to the pub just got ignored. No drinks menu? Had to ask for the desert menu as was initially interested in the 3 course meal but the main menu didn't show any deserts. Service wasn't great at all. We really wanted the carvery and was told we would be called up when we could go get it. We waited 30 minutes and no one called us up. Eventually we decided to leave which was unfortunate as it was my husbands first fathers day treat with his 2 month year old baby.

Title of great British pub of the year is well deserved. Wide variety of food to suit all palettes. Dishes are a culinary delight using locally sourced fruit and vegetables (we saw produce being delivered). Service was excellent and staff were very friendly. Even if you aren't local, diverting to the Tollmache Arms is definitely worth it. You won't regret it.

I don't know what is going on with the food here these days. My son and daughter-in-law had the burgers which tasted like a very very poor MaccyD! I had the chicken burger. Like someone had chucked a dry piece of chicken breast between two slices of bun, tomato and a little lettuce. This was meant to be part of the prosecco deal. It was so flat half way through it I left it! It used to be decent food wise at this Wetherspoon. Not anymore. Don't waste your time unless you're just going to have drinks.

We were very disappointed with the service. We arrived and we greeted by a very nice young lady who took us to our table however we had a couple of issues with our food. When we raised our issues with the manager she dismissed them and refused to help at all. We asked for her name and she didn’t give it to us but her staff called us she was called Maggie.

Wanted to try the Monday Club menu so booked for 5 p.m, this was our first visit and we found food to be extremely delicious and well presented by friendly attentive staff, everything was served at the correct temperature and dishes were of a generous size so my compliments go to the chef... we will be back!

Just had a nice meal here, being a Monday evening it was quiet but the service was good and the food also good.
