My partner had been given a voucher for champagne afternoon tea for two. When we arrived, we were seating in a dingy area next to a large table of ladies in dressing gowns, stinking of chlorine, being very noisy. I'm sure this is find in a venue solely for people having "spa days" - but when I make the effort to dress up to go out for afternoon tea, I don't want to be surrounded by people in their dressing gowns. I politely asked to move somewhere else, and was told that this was the only area for afternoon tea, if I was to sit elsewhere I had to have sunday lunch. Eventually they managed to seat us elsewhere, in the restaurant. My plate was smeared with jam. My partner's Ear Grey tea was a teabag in a pot. After checking the website where it said it was loose leaf tea, it was changed. I was told that most people don't want loose leaf tea as they can't be bothered to use a strainer....ok. After a while the food came....ham sandwich, cheese and pickle sandwich...nothing very inspiring. The spinach and parmesan tart listed on their website as I type which sounded nice, and somewhat more fitting for a £32 a head afternoon tea, was nowhere to be seen. On the sweet front, neither was the popcorn or chocolate mousse. The couple of cakes we ate were ok, nothing special. I asked to take the rest of the cakes home....and was asked to sign a disclaimer form! Never have I been asked to do that before when taking food home - bizarre. They said they didn't have any boxes so gave me the cakes wrapped up in a bit of tinfoil. Overall, the afternoon tea would have been disappointed had it been £15 in Patisserie Valerie. For £32 a head, they are having an absolute laugh. AVOID unless you want to get ripped off for mediocre food (not as described) with crap service in a dowdy environment and with rowdy noisy people in dressing gowns.

Went on a Saturday night and came away disappointed with the service. Food was okay but I don’t expect to order a bottle of wine and have it delivered with the screw top still on and just be left in a wine cooler on the table. No one offered to pour it or cane to top up glasses during the meal.

From making the payment months ago to the actual day and meal, not a great experience. Customer service is of a very poor standard at this hotel. My partner received an email confirming the payment only to be be told a month or 2 later that payment was still to be made. When she called to query this no one wanted to take responsibility .On to the big day. Very welcoming on arrival, exactly as you would expect at this hotel and at £100 per head. Escorted into the restaurant and shown to our table . From this point it just goes downhill. Waiting for drinks seem to take an age. Food was of a very poor standard . Don't think i've ever seen roast potatoes that small or as undercooked. My partner was even told they had run out of something she had ordered. Surely they knew the numbers they were catering for ???? Very poor in my opinion. After our meal we sat in the bar , drinking . Was then told, unless we were staying at the hotel , the bar will be closing. This was at 17.45. My drinks bill was £157.00. So they can't say we were'nt spending money.Very disappointing and bad experience in my opinion. Definitely not going to rush back to this Hotel.

We've used this restaurant for Sunday lunch several times in the past and have always been very impressed with both the food and the service. However it has changed hands and when we visited on Sunday 13 August we found the service to be as good as ever but the food was very poor. Quite a limited menu choice (from what I remember there was a choice from 4 mains and 3 desserts), the main course was barely warm, the miserly piece of cauliflower, broccoli and couple of slices of carrot were quite tasteless and the rhubarb and strawberry crumble was awful - very tart and the fruit was barely cooked. And a cup of tea or coffee cost 4 quid! There were very few people in the restaurant, which is quite telling, and we won't be returning.

We had a table for 8 booked for 7.45pm for an evening meal as we were all residing in the hotel for business. The restaurant was fairly busy but not packed. The service was slow and not very helpful. They ran out of cold white wine and we were told we would have to wait for it to be chilled we also waited half an hour for a bottle of water to be remembered on the table. The staff where rude when a complaint was made and really did not seem to care, it was as if they were used to it. We did not receive our main meals until well after 9.45 and you could tell that some of the food had been sitting around waiting as it was like warm. We eventually managed to finish the coffees by 11pm. Over three hours for a meal that was less the mediocre and due to the lateness of it being served left me with indigestion during the night and trouble being able to sleep and feeling groggy and with a stomach upset in the morning. Not exactly how you want to feel before going into a meeting all day. I would recommend that you get a taxi into town for a meal rather than waste time and money here.

Over the past 4 months I have used the bar/coffee lounge in this hotel for various small one to one business meetings. Each time I have found the hotel easy to park and clean. But the service in the bar/coffee lounge is consistently poor. Staff seem busy doing their own thing and not interested in any customers. If it wasn't for the location I would find another venue. Avoid if you are in a hurry - can take 5 minutes to get served (or even noticed). Best use cash as they are so slow. Management seem to have little interest - maybe this is were the issue stems from.

The food served for Sunday lunch was lovely. We had a lovely three courses but it was let down by the poor service. I in an hour and a half we had eaten a starter with no sign of the main. When asked if we wanted the beef red or well done. You would think that making the choice to have it well done is how it would have arrived! Nope.....instead two of us ate our mains whilst my partner sat waiting for hers to go back to the kitchen as it was red and not well done. Whilst I had nearly finished my course when hers had just arrived back in the table! TWe did have desert which for what it was seems to take forever to arrive. We didn't hang around for the coffee as I'm sure this would have felt like a night cap with the amount of time courses came out of the kitchen. The food was good but the poor service has put us off returning in the near future.

I hadn't eaten at this restaurant for 4 or 5 years and was happy when this hotels restaurant was suggested for a retirement do. Not now!!! The soup was served tepid with soggy croutons and in desperate need of seasoning. The pork loin main had spent far to long on the pass and had curled like an old british railways sandwich, the tiny portions of over cooked carrot and long beans were dotted across a large plate in a retro nouvelle cuisine style. The cheesecake probably had more gelatin in it than one of my granny's home made jellies. All this for £21, the catering will have to change before you see me back there, i almost had to stop for fish and chips on the way home. The meal was neither substantial enough or tasty enough to bother again

My wife's salad was a little heavy on the dressing vinegar wise and she had to leave some as she was breaking out in a sweat! The chateaubriand was exquisite however - perfectly cooked. The sauce was delicious, fries light and crisp as was the salad. We declined on a sweet as the main course was enough!Service during the meal was good although I did wait 20 minutes for a drink at one stage. However, once the meal was finished the service declined rapidly!! I tried for twenty minutes to atract attention to get my bill because staff were too busy serving a large party in another room. I had to get up and ask in the end. This was the second time we visited and it was worse than the first but we thought we’d give it another chance. Skimpy on the portions - except for the huge Yorkshire pudding. The vegetable portion was so small I had to ask for more. The fish cake was ok but I can get the same if not better from a supermarket. No cheese board or any cheese other than cheddar. At Christmas time no cheese and port?? The roast potatoes were chewy and the whole meal was bland. It didn’t cost too much but what’s the hype all about? If this is the best pub in Britain then we’re in a lot of trouble. 🙁 Disappointing Tollemache, very disappointing, we will not return again.

Not a review of the services provided by Barton Hall but unfortunately feel the need to raise this in the hope it gathers attention. It has come to a point where Barton Hall may as well not have the Tesla super chargers in their car park at this time of year. The amount of non-electric vehicles which are being allowed to park in the Tesla charger spaces is unbelievable. It’s causing chaos in their car park as multiple electric cars are unable to get on chargers and can’t go anywhere because the rest of the car park is full. It’s essentially no different to someone coming in and parking across the front of a petrol station. I can understand that some spaces may need to be used as overflow in peak times, but why not do what every other place does and monitor/limit this to 20 minutes maximum stay only in such spaces for non EV’s? Any electric car parked at 100% would start to be charged overstay fees for not moving out of the space. So why is it fair that stubborn people are getting away with parking petrol cars in these spaces with no comeuppance, just because they’re too lazy to park further out and walk? I’d imagine under their agreement with Tesla, they are bound to keep charging stations accessible for electric vehicles?
