We chose this pub as it’s a half way point for family to meet. The pub itself is lovely nice feel to it, lovely village. Great beer selection. Allows dogs and the beer garden would be lovely weather permitting. Easy to park. The food however was mediocre. I had a steak sandwich with mushrooms. Not in edible but the steak was grisly and chewy. My husbands club sandwich was cold. The rest of the diners didn’t say their food was awful just could have been better for the price. Also suspect they were understaffed the day we went as while the staff were very friendly service was slow which was ok for us as we were wanting a long lunch but might not have suited others. So all in all not awful but we wouldn’t retune for food. I would like to try the beers but couldn’t as I was driving 😁

Nice atmosphere in the pub, good menu and good quality food. However, I was extremely disappointed seeing the 'we are a cashless business' sign on the bar. I hate this rubbish - why? What is wrong with my cash? It's for this reason, I didn't buy any drinks but chose to have just tap water with my meal. I was with colleagues and hadn't booked the meal so I didn't kick up a fuss and paid by card - realised only after I paid and looked at the receipt that they also added a 10% service charge without telling me. What arrogance? I thought the food was a bit over-priced already. Despite the nice food and atmos, I will not be giving this place my business again.

Stopped purely on the basis we were hungry after a nice walk and followed the brown sign from the main road. Fantastic decision as this pub is lovely and we were rewarded with a nice brunch with a good choice of beers, served by friendly staff. Cosy surroundings with the burner going made it an ideal lunch stop.

Went here with my wife and my two boys. The menu looked very promising and everything we ordered was delicious. I had a yummy soup and then Confit duck which was fab. My wife had a burrata and tomato salad and a soup both were delicious. The boys had kids meals, chicken goujons and a cheese burger. Both came with fries and were enjoyed.. We all left happy and full up. It was about £75 all in so not the cheapest lunch ever but I felt it was worth it. I would definitely return to this establishment

Came for lunch last week. I’m dairy free and your pub was unable to offer me anything on your menu except 2 vegan dishes both which had things in it I could not eat. When asked to make a sandwich without butter I was told that company policy would not let the chef do this. This was disgraceful to any diner with a food intolerance.

Asked for a glass of Pinot grigio told they didn’t have any!! Very Limited menu Had Camembert as a starter it was over cooked & had leaked out of case. The bill arrived & thought expensive for the quality of the food & for what we’d had. Our thoughts are, the pub/restaurant is asking higher than normal pub prices due to location not quality of food. Have eaten there numerous times over the years & have never noticed how expensive it is previously. Not sure I’ll be going back….

A great cosy pub. If it had been nicer we would have sat in the lovely garden. The meal was ok, chips were cold. We asked for a jug of water. When it came it was warm. For the price the meal was not outstanding. But the real annoyance was that payments were cards only. We were not aware of this. I feel in this day and age we should all have the choice of either. The staff were very polite about it,but obviously not their choice. It lies with Hall and Woodhouse. Rather disappointed with your policy.

Returned to the Wheatsheaf again today and, as always in my experience a really lovely lunch served by extremely nice staff. The menus were varied with plenty of choice. We chose the pork belly and fish pie, both extremely well presented and they didn't disappoint. Desserts were equally attractively presented and delicious. This pub is hard to beat

Lovely spot with huge beer garden not far from Stonehenge in a pretty village. For allergens ask the staff they are well equipped to answer (the online menu was confusing on allergens but the humans do a good job via an iPad stating what you can and can’t have. We had Sunday lunch which was enjoyed and an adequate amount but on 4/8/24 the beef was very chewy. Pork was good. No apple sauce or horseradish on offer. If gluten free Sunday lunch is served without stuffing or Yorkshire puddings. Gravy is gluten free and vegan “catering to all”. Veg nicely cooked as were potatoes. You can tell it’s a chain. Particular shout out to the young man and young lady (look like uni students both brown hair) who were doing a fab job waiting on and being reassuring about gluten free, gravy etc. Thank you.

On arrival, we were shown to a table drinks order and food taken. At no point were we advised that this was card only business. Imagine the embarrassment, when asking for the bill to be bluntly told you can’t pay with cash this is embarrassing to the point where one of my guests offered to pay on my behalf!! Fortunately I had a card, but I do not appreciate being told when I can and cannot use cash!. when I pointed the fact out that we are not told I was told there are no end of signs around the premises advising of this. I would like to know where! This business need to realise that not the whole world is vegan, and be forced, to have vegan mayonnaise is wrong! A choice of regular or vegan mayonnaise would be appreciated. I also appreciate the 14 allergens, but the policy regarding this is OTT! The food was okay, but I wouldn’t rush back following the service and the attitude of the staff regarding card only payments. In the event of a customer not having a card, what would they do!!

A hot day so we stayed indoors. The slow start for ordering was redeemed by the quality of the food: two salmon, one fish and chips and one Mediterranean tart which my wife said was the best meal she’d had in ages. Ice creams, Eton mess and lemon tart for dessert. All in all a good occasion.

Went for a meal with Melvin and upon arriving thought what a lovely location and quaint place to eat. After we got our drinks and were seated immediately in front of the doorway which was letting the cold in as people arrived and left so asked to move, and seated in another room. We decided to just have one starter to share and chose the Terrine which was £8.95 and was enough for us both and fairly tasty. I had the Venison bourguignon £18.95 for main meal which came with mashed potato and carrots and kale I believe.. the venison bourguignon was melt in your mouth really delicious, the mash was standard nothing special, and the vegetables were wilted, limp and over cooked so I left them. Melvin had the Sirloin Steak meal at £29! I was shocked at what he was served as the sirloin steak was not even a cm thick and not very good at all it certainly looked like half of it was missing and not worth £29! The server came over and asked how the meal was to which Melvin said and rightly so that he has had better elsewhere and asked if the steak was a flat iron steak instead of a sirloin as really didn’t seem right at all. After complaining Melvin received £15 off his meal which we appreciate as that’s about all I would want to pay for a steak that looked beaten with a butchers mallet. Unfortunately we will not be returning as this visit was rather a let down and first impressions are everything. More attention and quality to the food served required as the prices do not reflect on what is received.

Went for dinner here last night as the Chapter house in Salisbury was fully booked. Given it's a Saturday night over the Easter holidays in a great location I wrongly assumed this would be fully booked also. We arrived at 8pm for our pre-booked table and the place was 90% empty. We were seated on a table directly In front of the main entrance which was very draughty so asked to be moved and also the 2 young women Effing with every second word behind us didn't exactly give me the impression I was about to be treated to a more discerning dinning experience either. We went over the menu that was fairly standard but none of the starters seemed that appealing given there asking circa £8 plus so ordered the Terrine at £8.95. it was ok..... Reviewed the "pub classics" and the beer battered fish and chips for £17.25 might of been an option but clearly as it didn't state cod or haddock was probably cheaper Pollack so I decided on the 28 day aged sirloin @ £29.75. Nora had the Venison Bourguignon. Our meals arrived, mine served on a cold plate and my first impression given the price was disappointing. The "sirloin" was at best 10mm thick and fairly tough and being unseasoned lacking in taste. The server returned to ask how the food was and I said disappointing, I've had better! I did question if the steak was really a sirloin and not the cheaper flat iron but he insisted it was the "sirloin". Given the price of the steak is more than twice that of wetherspoons am I expecting too much for it to be at least as good as a wetherspoons? Needless to say by this time I'd lost interest in eating so declined a pudding or coffee and paid up and left a modest tip. Shame really as the location and ambience should make this place a gold mine just like the Chapter house in the city centre but clearly something isn't going too well with this Hall and Woodhouse establishment. A good steak isn't rocket science and clearly the quality of the produce being used should be better given the prices.

Arrived here this evening for a bite to eat with my partner and my two children, somewhat of an impromptu visit after finishing work, upon arrival we were greeted with what I can only describe as hostility, the woman in question appeared to be miserable, in a bad mood and clearly wasn’t the best point of contact. I was surprised she was allocated the role of front of house when the other young waitresses were more friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic.. the only reason we stayed. We feel the woman would be better suited to a behind the scenes role as her customer service skills were non existent, I believe she may have been the manager as she wasn’t wearing a uniform. The food we had was lovely and the young waitresses were very helpful and explained they’d been training all week even taking time to explain to us the history of the pub... maybe someone with people skills should take on the front of house role.

Sadly I cannot give a review of the food and drink here as we were not allowed in! However even before entering the door we were not impressed as it seemed nearly all the outside tables had not been cleared - they were full of the remains of food and crockery and glasses from those customers who were lucky enough to be allowed to eat there. When we went through the door we were ‘greeted’ by a very rude member of staff who barked ‘have you booked?’ When we said we hadn’t she told us to leave as the payment system had gone down so it would not be possible for us to order anything. While we understand about the payment difficulties, there really was no need to be so rude about it. The Wheatsheaf used to my families local around 20 + years ago and holds many happy memories hence the reason for our return. Sadly it seems it has changed for the worst and I cannot see us ever going back again.

We like this place.. It’s a lovely traditional pub/restaurant in a gorgeous location. It’s catering to a wide audience but it does so quite well. The current Covid rules are followed very well and whilst this detracts slightly from the overall experience (by no means their fault, it’s just how it is at the moment) I have to say the food is faultless. We visited today for a family lunch and would thoroughly recommend. The food was great and our waitress, Gemma, was fantastic. She greeted us with a smile and couldn’t be more helpful. First class service! We can’t wait to return.

Popped by for lunch today, being a Sunday, we all opted for a roast! Food was good, but the service was excellent. Our server, Gemma (I hope she doesn’t mind us naming her on here) was brilliant; funny, attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Lovely little table, good atmosphere, yummy Camembert (could have done with a bit more bread) and pumpkin tortellini (could have done with a bit more sauce). Cheesy garlic bread, beef burger, kofta kebabs 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

We have visited the Wheatsheaf many times over the last 25 years or more. We were very disappointed this time. We booked a table, expecting it to be busy as half term, but in fact very few tables on arrival. We found the menu to have limited choices. Odd things like Roasted Ling and Aubergine Curry, not normal pub classics, several types of burger but generally a lacking menu. Food served in a reasonable time. Steak and ale pie , red cabbage was very dry but pie tasty though why such a little jug of gravy for quite a large pastry pie. Honey roast ham, with eggs and chips should be so easy to get right, but sadly the ham was quite fatty. Sadly, we will not be returning here again in the near future

What can I say I come here often and I never normally have any trouble I came in at about 19:40 on Monday evening to be told the kitchen is closed!! I asked why? And the mans reply was it’s been a long day! Was he having a laugh? was going to stay and have a drink but the man seemed very rude and unwelcoming so we didn’t think his name was Matt/ Mathew? Suppose it’s one way to lose custom!!!

Cold!!!!!! Very disappointing meal at £59 a head cold meal not real turkey more like turkey roll , curdled bread sauce. They picked up my review and offered me a complimentary meal to try and make amends for the poor Christmas day lunch. It stated on the email I had to click on the link to reply which I did leaving instruction I'd like lunch today 13th January at a time suitable to them obviously that warranted reply, I never received one. Very rude and unacceptable certainly wont be venturing there again and as I work and live locally they wont be getting recommendations from me in the future

We visited here twice once for dinner once for lunch when we stayed close by. We found the food, atmosphere and the staff spot on. We did book in advance as it was NYE and NYD that we visited, and glad we did as it was very busy. We did have a considerable wait on both these days for food but it wasn't a problem.

We tried the Wheatsheaf because it was quite close to our lodge in Lower Woodford, and we were really pleased. They said they were really booked and we did not have a reservation, but they were able to find a table for us in the bar area, and we were delighted. They had a great menu with many attractive offerings, and we tried the soup and the steak and ale pie, both of which were delicious. For dessert we had some ice cream, and were pleased at all the flavors available. We enjoyed our whole experience there and look forward to returning soon!

Our family group visited Friday, Dec 27th and were able to enjoy a reunion lunch together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, The age group from twelve to ninety all had tantalising food choices which satisfied their individual tastes. The waitress was friendly and accommodating, apologising profusely about an out of stock dessert item. Altogether it was a memorable experience, we can't wait to come again.

Probably the worst meal in our 50 years of marriage. Absolutely disgusting food. Certainly not turkey or any Christmas food. Terrible service and argumentative staff we recommend you don't go there. Table was very dirty and plates cracked and dirty. Certainly not value for money a total disaster

Booked on line the previous day. We were greater on arrival and I checked it was OK to bring our dog in yes she was welcome in the area our reservation was for. Our young waitress was very good, taking the order and talking through options. The drinks and food arrived in good time and we asked for the limitless Yorkshire puddings and extra gravy - both excellent options. The desserts were nicely presented and very tasty. Lovely atmosphere great place for lunch.

This used to be one of our favourite pubs to visit. Unfortunately it’s gone very downhill. There used to be such a warm and friendly feel to the place with lovely food. Your now greeted by rude staff who quite clearly make you feel like they have better things to be doing! There isn’t a specials board anymore and the menu is just basic. We were even asked to take our starter plates up to the bar when we had finished!! It wasn’t like the pub was busy either. We won’t be returning which is sad. Quite frankly, the food and service is better at weatherspoons!!

Thank you so much to the team at the wheatsheaf who accommodated our group of 29 for sunday lunch. The food was thoroughly enjoyed by all, they let me use the phone when I shut my keys in the car, and they gave me a lovely christmas gift which was a welcome surprise after a stressful day organising everyone and calling out the break down cover! Thanks so much, we will definitely be back but maybe not so many of us next time!

This place is well located - we chose it as a meeting point close to the A303. It’s big, but it doesn’t feel it - lots of dining areas; low ceilings. And yes, a fire in the hearth (if you are seated anywhere near it). The music from the nearby speaker was a bit irritating (but no worse then that).

Visited with a group of friends. Online booking was really easy and communicated very well. Arrived to a very warm welcome. The pub has a really nice relaxed feel. The food was ordered and arrived pretty quick with all ordering different and all looked lovely, not huge portions just right I’d say - I had the aubergine curry which was very tasty just the aubergine could’ve been cooked a little longer it was quite hard. The puds were huge!! I had the Winter Mess again very tasty just the fruits were still frozen. That’s why I have only given 4 stars. The staff were attentive and the prices were very reasonable I’d have no hesitation in recommending or returning.

I understand on the day we visited, the kitchen was down to one chef due to illness/ emergency. Unfortunately, this situation wasn't managed particularly well. All in all, a terrible meal. 2 meals unacceptably cold (but not charged for, to be fair). Other meals luke-warm whilst burger buns burnt & chips overcooked (all-round).

I Went here with my girlfriend recently and I was utterly disappointed. We ordered drinks which were expensive , I had a peroni which was £5.13 a pint my girlfriend had a wine , wasn’t sure on the price of that. We ordered starters which were £7.00 each, I had the crab mayonnaise with sour dough bread , a small amount of crab mayonnaise in a ramakin, with 2 slices of cold pre bought sour dough bread, with 2 unwrapped foil butters plucked on top, which were so hard straight out the fridge I couldn’t even spread it and it was ripping my bread apart. My girlfriend had the baked mushrooms with lentils. The mushrooms came out cold with a handful of lentils just chucked over the top. There was so much water that came out of the mushroom it flooded the plate. I was so disappointed with this food and the price of it. It’s such a shame because the wheatsheaf was always renowned for serving good food over the years. I don’t know what’s happened to this place but the food needs to be fixed ASAP. The place is lovely , the staff are nice and the service isn’t too bad, it’s just the food that lets this place down out the moment. Oh...I forgot to mention the chefs blaring rap music from the kitchen which was bellowing out onto the tables situated near the kitchen doors.

Invited to a 3pm Sunday lunch, 4 adults and 2 children (2 & 5) on a nice sunny day. There were not many people in when we arrived, but it did look at if had been busy earlier. We waited a few minutes for our table but were soon seated with drinks ordered and coming. We all ordered the roast dinner with smaller portions for the children. The meals arrived and they were massive. If you are not a really big eater I would suggest the smaller portions as these were more than enough for the average person. If you like your meat , this is the meal to have. The beef was really tender and all the veg cooked just right. The one turkey meal was the same in quantity and quality.

Decided to try from recommendations from the girls at work. To start they didn’t have certain things on the menu. Confit duck, the lemon chicken and one of the trout specials. It wasn’t overly busy, not much of an atmosphere.

Standard Hall and Woodhouse[local pub chain] menu with no specials. Lovely crab pate started with good sourdough. Vegetarian buddha bowl was good, wide range of grains and vegetables, interesting textures [if buddhist monks all eat like this they'd be quite plump] Salmon pave, leeks peas and caper mash all nicely cooked. Slight oddity - we sat outside and manager said if we ordered starters and mains they would all arrive at once, so had to go in and order main after starter eaten. The mains did however arrive promptly. Looked quite child friendly for a summer day.Big burger choice.

We booked Sunday lunch for five of us. After a short wait we were greeted and seated with our menus and we promptly gave our drink orders. The food ordering wasn’t quite so prompt though as our server had managed to get trapped behind the bar helping out bar staff so we had to wait a while between getting our drinks and giving our order.

A very nice pub in the Woodford Valley. Large car park, plenty of outside seating. Nicely decorated. We had a very nice dinner. We could not fault the quality, taste or presentation of the food. Portions were on the small side though for the price. We were the only ones in the restaurant so service was good. Experience spoilt by the cracks between the wooden table top being dirty and full of salt and pepper and food remnants. We did advise the waiter (nice well spoken young man) who said he will advise management), so we shall see when we next visit.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.

Stopped off for a late lunch/early dinner. So much to choose from. Had the steak and ale pie with mash and the steak and kidney pudding with mash. Both delicious, hot and plentiful. Amazing value for money. Staff very attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Lovely place for families, dog friendly too. 5 star on all fronts.
