My first visit to the Cross Keys and one of many to come. Participated in a chivelrous bout for the ages in the infamous premier pool league. Their tap water and ice is unrivalled and even better still, the owner and his family couldn't have made me feel more welcomed. Carvery is next...

There is a great choice of Vegetables including Parsnips, Carrot/Swede, Cabbage, peas, carrots, Roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and stuffing. staff(I think) was extremely rude to me when I went into pub toilet out of desperation when had I food poisoning on long journey home. I intended to ask if was possible to use facilities but there was no one behind bar on entry, on way out an old man gave me abuse for using toilet when I wasn't buying food or drink. I assume he either owned pub or worked there as he had no other reason to be involved. People have no class.

Booked a table for 4 for lunch, arrived and they pointed out our table as we ordered drinks. We sat down and waited a good 10-15 mins as no one had explained anything before getting up to go and ask. Got told there was a carvery where you go up once, or where you could go up multiple times. Which would we prefer? Asked for the one where we go up once thinking it would be a normal carvery where you get meat, potatoes and veg etc. Had to wait when at the carvery counter as no one was there, and then got handed the smallest plate ever (about a cm bigger than a side plate). It had enough room for the meat and a couple potatoes, everything else had to be piled on top. Adding gravy meant that the whole lot just fell straight off the plate, making a horrendous mess on both the table and the school canteen style trays they give you. Food was very nice and hot! I will give them credit for that. Came to clear the plate a good 15 mins or so after we had finished, which would have been fine if they were busy and rushed off their feet - they weren’t. No asking if how the food was. I gave them this feedback at the bar to which they replied that well, the regular carvery is a small plate and if you wanted a bigger one then you have to pay more for the carvery where you can go up multiple times. This is ridiculous. Surely, you should be able to have the same plate and just visit once or....a regular carvery should have a REGULAR plate and then a larger one for the other option. If they had explained this at the beginning then fair enough, but was just a farce in customer service. They don’t seem to care, and don’t appreciate the feedback when given. This is my second bad experience at this pub, having not visited due to last experience where they had no beer, did not realise that their beer was off and had no food at 1.30 on a Sunday as chef had ‘thrown it out’ (I think this was the previous tenants) - however, does not bode well. I will not be returning and would advise others to either go elsewhere or hope they improve the customer service and actually explain things to customers. Shame, as the food was actually good.

Used to be a great pub with a lovely village atmosphere and the staff etc were really friendly, so after it having a new landlord we gave it a few months to let them settle in and find their feet before returning. So disappointed!!! It was incredibly quiet, only a handful of people in there which raised our suspicions but we ordered food, surprised to see it was the same menu that they used to have. Staff were miserable and on phones, food was so slow and not hot, how can it take 50 minutes to cook food when they were so quiet? And why was it not hot? The wife said the ladies toilets were dirty and dusty, not impressed. Such a shame, will be finding a different pub now for the old village atmosphere and some smiles

Went for lunch today. Bar staff were as miserable as can be. Had the Carvery roast. Choice of 3 meats and plenty of veg to choose from. The Lady that served the meat to us was very bubbly and friendly thank goodness as she was the only one in the place that had some good manners. However the food was cold and everything was completely tasteless. Even salt and pepper couldn’t put it right. Expected better for the price we paid of £12.50 each to be honest.

Visited today to take two elderly relatives for Sunday lunch. Was a bit in trepidation having read some of the reviews on here, but as we booked late most places were full up so we took a chance. I shouldn’t have worried. The food was excellent, perfectly cooked, lovely and hot and loads of it. All served with a smile and a kind word The surroundings - eating in a skittle alley - weren’t the most impressive, and it’s not the easiest place to park close to, but the food on offer and value for money, and the warm genuine welcome we got, more than compensated for that. Very good value for money and very informal One thing I would like them to address. The plates given to you at the carvery are placed on a plastic tray, which is very “slidey” and for two elderly relatives not in the most “abled” of health made not dropping the plates whilst serving themselves to veges a challenge - however the lady on the carvery immediately noticed one of the elderlys struggling and very quickly called one of the staff to assist- which was a nice touch, although surely others must struggle with this as well, and maybe provision of non slide trays would be a good idea..... Other than that it’s hard to find fault - we all really enjoyed our lunch and will definitely go back again

Impromptu visit for Sunday lunch. The food was very tasty and portion sizes were as small or large as you'd like. The apple & cinnamon crumble was delicious. All seemed good value for money. The wooden floored function room was somewhat drab and Spartan so not a dress-up lunch. My reason for marking this venue as average was we witnessed the tongs being dropped and returned to the server - I guess the 5 second rule applies but I am not sure that it would be deemed good practice.

Felt a bit rowdy with all the crowds watching sport on tv in the bar - but thankfully, the carvery was in a more peaceful area! I have visited the Cross Keys in Rowde for over 30 years and a few years ago Sam took over and offered a Carvery. A pity they do not offer starters but I was not disappointed with the Carvery at a very good price. Hearing that Sam had moved-on I was a little worried that the quality of food would go down. I need not have worried as the choice was excellent and in my opinion is the best value Carvery in the area. Four meats are on offer with a very wide of vegetable choices. A good sweet menu to finish and the Cross Keys is good value. I have not eaten there for Dinner for some time but if Sundays are that good I cannot see why not for other times. Car parking is a problem but I have always received a warm welcome and do enjoy the meals. Always phone and book a table and make you own mind-up.

The friends we were visiting had been told about the great food at a pub called the crosskeys and they wanted to check it out. One of our party is a keen ale fan and also had an interest in the range that was offered.Upon arrival we were welcomed and provided with menus. Its rather nice to be welcomed as you walk into a place these days so that set things up nicely.Eventually after admiring all interior of the pub we decided to order. I went for a pizza and my partner had a burger. I expected typical pub food but i had already decided i liked the pub so if it was good then great. It arrived around 25 minutes later (all food is freshly made to order) and i was gobsmacked at how enjoyable it was. Myself and family have been coming to the Cross Keys for the majority of the ten years we have lived in the village. We keep on coming because we love the atmosphere, the locals, and the fact that it is a brilliant village pub.We had my Mums 50th booked with the previous Landlord, but Kelly was more than happy to let us keep the date, and to have our party in the function room. Even when we were putting the decorations up, Kelly and her staff (including her lovely parents), were interested and willing to help us make the party special! My Mum was absolutely overwhelmed with how nice the pub looked, but what she (and all the other guests) commented on the most was how brilliant the food was. Kelly's spread was fantastic, we had a variety of food from homemade quiches and sandwiches, to chicken wings and spring rolls, mozzarella sticks, crisps and some lovely dips alongside! It was more than we expected, absolutely delicious food from a lovely Landlady who wants to make the pub a success. My family and I cannot praise Kelly enough for the brilliant party we had last night, nothing was too much trouble, all the guests had a great time, and most of all it was a birthday to remember for my Mum! I urge anyone who has been in the pub before and has written a bad review to give it a second chance, because we really couldn't fault it last night. I would definitely recommend the Cross Keys for any function or party, because you can guarantee that Kelly and her staff will go above and beyond and you will have the best night ever!

This is our local, so a change of hands was always going to be a bit strange, but Kelly has done an amazing job with the place and has brought a new energy and enthusiasm to The Cross Keys. Drink-wise she has listened to the customers and changed some of the line-up, so the selection is much better. Food-wise the Carvery is still happening on a Sunday, and the updated food menu includes some nice light-bites, home-made bar snacks and a wide selection of burgers with locally sourced ingredients. The best part of it has to be the new pizza oven! I've had at least four pizzas so far and I'd easily rate them better than Dominos or Pizza Express. The take-away option is a stroke of genius as well. All in all the Cross Keys is a welcoming establishment, great for a night out or for a family meal, and I'd thoroughly recommend it. Please don't read anything into negative reviews previous to July as they are certainly not representative.

Went here for Mother's Day and was very disappointed. It seemed very disorganised, food was bland and the service for desserts was ok at best. On top of that the we had the last bread and butter pudding on the day which was served very cold. Have been here before and had a great meal but this has put me off of returning..... Ruined a great mothers day

Lovely homely feel pub, with good food at reasonable prices. We all had different meals and were served pretty quickly, from the first meal going down to the last going down was only about 5 mins, which is pretty good. Nothing was too much trouble, extra sauces were brought out and they even supplied a knife for cutting the cake. All in all was a good service and meal.Only concern was the log fire spitting out ashes, as we had children with us.

So yeah, I know what you’re thinking; this pub is the guy’s local so it’s bound to be bias. Not at all, for if it was rubbish I ain’t got any reason to tell you that it isn’t so and I will be the first one to admit, as it is frustrating when the only pub in a village is run bag of spanners, that it is bad. The Cross Keys has a chequered past, fact. The landlord and staff is the main basis for the overall appeal of a pub, particularly Wadsworth Brewery pubs as aesthetically they are all pleasing on the eye. The Cross Keys has that character but it has had good and bad landlords. A year or so ago when you popped in there you got the stare, as if it was a burden for you to be there. The bar staff were busy watching Corrie on the big screen and the only punter was the sleeping village idiot that was too pissed to walk elsewhere. The new landlord had a big job on his hands, to turn it around and wipe off the grime of a bad reputation, this has happened in the past and I am glad to report that history has repeated itself. The Cross Keys is doable again, the atmosphere is pleasant, the kids are welcome and the staff are willing to please. The everyday menu is good but standard, the only other pub in the village is a rather expensive and plush restaurant with people travelling from Timbuctoo to sample the experience therefore locals are only welcomed if they want to take out a small loan for a lobster and sitting at the bar having a pint after work is frowned upon. Therefore, it is crass for the Keys to try and lay down some overpriced fancy menu; it has to stick with basic pub grub and that is what it does. The everyday menu though is not what people here are returning to their local for though, it is the Sunday carvery.I’ve been a few times and it has always been excellent. I wondered if they could keep up the quality now that more people have warmed to its delights. So we marched down there for the wife’s birthday and it was every bit as good as the first time. The meat is pork, beef and turkey and is plentiful. You know the old carvery stigma, you get up to the food bar, the guy slices you off a gristly end of topside that would only fill up a small cat and although you are in your rights to ask for more, you are English and to complain would be causing a scene. Well, no need for embarrassment here, you will not need to ask for more and filling up the plate with vegetables just to compensate for the carver’s lack of generosity is not necessary (even though I still do!) So with a huge portion of meat you have a wide selection of veg and Yorkshire’s stuffing and the works to go with it. It really is the meal of kings! Personally I like to load up my plate until it is flooding off the sides, because that is the kind of guy I am and for the gluttonous hogs like me, you even get provided with a tray so that the gravy doesn’t spill down your food mountain and stain your shirt; that in my book is quality service! So, all in all, if you are looking for a decent Sunday roasty in Devizes you should give this a try. It is only a stone throw away from the town on the main Chippenham road and easy to find on an empty stomach. Booking is advisable but they seem to have plenty of space which is great because you are never rushed, there is pool and darts, a beer garden sporting a bouncy castle on sunny days and you can even play at being Bruce Forsyth and play your cards right; now I know you are tempted!

We went to this pub for lunch, but we were very disappointed. We wanted something light but the menu is very limited on sandwiches (one burger, one cheeseburger and one veggie burger), so we decided to go for the burger, expecting a home made succulent burger. We couldn't be more wrong. What we got was a cheap, commercial burger, cooked to death, very dry on a cheap supermarket bought burger bun.To add to the disappointment there's a 'suggestion box' available for customers, with a note that says 'if you write a suggestion please add your email and be sure I'll contact you'. So yes, I wrote a suggestion and I'm still waiting to be contacted. No, we are not going back to this pub, even thought the place looks nice, our experience with the food couldn't have been worse.

My family ate here for our first dinner in Devises after having spent a week in London. We started with garlic bread (no cheese), I had the grilled steak, my husband had the chicken and ham pie, and my son had the hunter's chicken. We will really enjoyed all of the meals. The pastry of the pie made us regret we were too full to try the apple pie. We wish we had more evenings to try their other dishes. Definitely recommend eating here.

On our last night we ordered takeaway fish and chips for a treat for the kids. Rather disappointing. The chips were not chip shop style and were under cooked and rather anaemic looking. The fish was ok, nothing special though. Kids were disappointed with their pasties, not Cornish and were more like pies. Wouldn't rush back for seconds!

Located at Rowde, on the main road from Chippenham to Devizes, the Cross Keys carvery is very good value with a wide choice of vegetables. Steve is the proprietor/server helped by his two efficient and delightful waitresses Anja and Regan who will ensure that diners enjoy their eating experience at the Cross Keys. Nicola and Ebony help in the kitchen and all the staff are to be complimented on their attitude and cheerfulnes. I always book so that I am not disappointed on turning up and not having a table, Diners will not be sorry as the meat portions are huge and with nearly ten vegetable choices all can have what they want rather than in a conventional restaurant where you are given what the chef decides is to be offered, I have said before that it is a pity that the Cross Keys do not offer a starter but on reflection, starters would spoil my enjoyment of the main meal. There is a choice of four meats and I went for turkey which was delicious but I could not eat all the vegetables on offer. The main costs £9.75 with £3,95 for the sweet which this Sunday was Caramel/apple pie with ice cream. They serve a wide selection of beers and the carvery must be the best value for money in the area. I am hard put to find anything to complain about so give it a try.Tel: 01380 739 567Donald KeighlyCalne

The landlord, Steve, always serves the meat, he is a nice guy with a very friendly team around him. An excellent carvery and great value for money. I had been very impressed with the standard of the carvery when I first visited the Cross Keys so on Sunday 21st September I travelled the short distance from Calne to Devizes and at Rowde on the right I easily parked. I always book a table so there was no problem and was shown to a table near-to the carvery, so I waited until someone else had been served and decided on the beef which was a little well-done for me but a choice of three meats should satisfy most diners. The selection of vegetables caused me a problem but I loaded my plate with roast and new potatoes, swede, greens and cauliflower cheese with peas, runner beans and a tasty yorkshire pudding. Hot gravy was poured onto the plate so I gingerly carried the plate to the table. I joked that I needed a mezzazine plate to enable me to try all the vegetables but overall I enjoyed the meal and Sam still appears to be happy in the job and the waitresses were a delight and made my day. The main is very reasonably priced at £9.75 plus £3.95 for a choice of sweets ended my visit. A good selection of beers is also available, so I will be back as Arnie always says.Donald KeighlyCalne

While staying in the village we visited the Cross Keys for an evening meal / drink. Had to wait to get menus and ordered 3 basic meals , scampi, ham egg and chips & fish cakes. Despite not being that busy on the food front still took nearly forty minutes until it arrived. It seemed from the running around of the owner that not enough staff were around to serve. Food when it did arrive was average . We did not go back again preferring to try other eating establishments in and around Devizes.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.
