What a find we were staying at Ludlow Touring site and booked Sunday lunch at The Wheatsheaf . The pub was really welcoming warm and comfortable. We were two couples who went for Sunday lunch and we all agreed it was the best Sunday lunch we had had at a pub and really good value . The beef and lamb were really tender and there was a good selection of vegetables all cooked perfectly. The service was good and nothing too much trouble. Thank you for making our first visit a success

Oldie-Wordly Shakespearean pub in a pretty Herefordshire style black and white building. It was ok but we must say some of the prices did seem shocking for what it was. Staff seemed nice and trying very hard, but some rude locals at bar and swearing shouting and smoking outside sadly. Worth a look if you’re passing.

Don't bother! 969746970 This was the first ever place that we stayed at back in 2006 on our first visit to Ludlow. Sadly, it's gone down the hill since those days. Just popped in for a drink today and was charged £7.40 for a pint of weak beer (4.1%) and a soda and blackcurrant! Also, the bar was infested with foul-mouthed, low-intellect individuals. Won't be rushing back!

We are three friends who used the pub/hotel as a central meeting point for a girly weekend away. The landlady and landlord were super friendly and helped to make our stay in Ludlow great. We didn’t get chance to try the food from the bar (a gig was on and they don’t serve a regular menu when this happens), but I believe it’s lovely. We did however get to enjoy the breakfast both mornings, which was really tasty and set us up for the day. The accommodation is dated, however it was clean and the beds comfy; not much to not like there. It’s not the Ritz, but you get a comfortable, friendly stay at a good price. We will be back to stay in this oldy-worldly pub in the future. Thank you to all the staff for your hard work.

Visited for drinks with two other girlies. Felt very awkward and we did not feel comfortable at all. The barman was very grumpy and looked like he did not care. Lots of local men at the bar who just stare at you. Left after one drink. Have emailed the owners to complain, am yet to receive a reply. Felt unsafe to us.

Quite a pretty pub. Bit of attitude from the staff. Slightly chippy. Would be fine for just a quick drink. Perhaps a pint of beer and some crisps. Cannot recommend the food as we did not enjoy our meals. Tasted like school dinners. Wine list incredibly basic.

Enjoyed a overnight stay at this lovely old pub in the heart of Ludlow. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Room was clean, facilities adequate. No thrills but worth the price. Breakfast was available at a extra cost, good heartie full English. Well worth the extra payment. Would definitely return for another vidit.

Welcoming and friendly and great pub food - the ham and eggs, lamb shank and steak and ale pie were delicious - good beers and leave room for the desserts as very tasty. Rooms are comfortable and clean and with a mix of accommodation available for our mixed group. Traditional breakfast which was made with local produce and butchers sausage - great stay.

The pub is lovely and run by lovely people and was only let down for me by the bedroom being so hot (no heating was on). Also, the noise as our room was directly above the bar (we could hear conversations clearly). The sleep we got was affected by this. Great location and lovely town.

Since the new management have taken over this pub has gone from strength to strength and is a great. welcoming local. Good, reasonably priced food is available every day except Tuesday. The ham and eggs are delicious and a generous portion. Sunday lunch is awesome. On cold days, the roaring log fire ensures a warm welcome The real ales are also well kept.

I live in Ludlow and there are many excellent pubs, but The Wheatsheaf is the best of them all if you like old-world cosy English pubs with lots of atmosphere, and good honest home-cooked food. The Wheatsheaf has been a pub for many hundreds of years, so if you’re looking for character and history this is the place for you. Along with a few friends we had the Christmas menu here last night and it could not be faulted. Superbly cooked, high quality meat and vegetables, generous portions and all served by friendly and attentive staff with a good sense of humour. Don’t come here expecting painted plates and Jenga chips – this is authentic home-cooking at its very best, all produced by the wonderful hosts Karen and Steve. My tipple is Guinness and this is, without doubt, the best place to drink Guinness anywhere outside of Dublin, and it’s the cheapest in Ludlow too. Happiness for me is sitting by the roaring fire at the end of the bar in the Wheatsheaf, with a pint of Guinness in my hand.

A lovely pub it said it was dog friendly but the barman wasn’t happy that my dog barked once when someone came in and said we should take the dog outside as he has people staying overnight and they would be disrupted by barking dogs this was lunch time not night time my dog makes less noise than a child crying and I would hope the guests were out enjoying themselves needless to say the barman got what he wanted we finished our drink and left

First visited and stayed here 4 years ago, decided to visit Ludlow again, and we stayed at this gem of a Inn, the owners have changed but the charm and friendliness hasn't. The Owners Steve and Karen made us feel so welcome as did the rest of the staff and regulars. The Sunday lunch was to die for. We stayed in Room 3 again, which has so much character. The Full English Breakfasts were delicious. We even took part in the monthly quiz which is on the last Sunday of the month. The Inn boasts a warm feel with a roaring fire which is most welcoming during the winter months. Great drinks selection at the bar aswell. Thoroughly recommended visiting and staying at this home from home.

We arrived in The Wheatsheaf between 7.50 and 7.55pm on a Monday evening (We were cutting it fine owing to a dreadful eight hour journey from Kent.), hoping to enjoy a meal in a pub that had attracted us through Tripadvisor and its website. I think a sign/board outside stated "Evening meals 6.00 to 8.00pm". I waited a few minutes at the bar, whilst the member of staff tended to a bill, and noted a couple being served a meal, so was hopeful we'd be in time. When the member of staff turned to me, I asked if we were in time to order food (I reckon it was about 7.56pm), she told me the kitchen had just closed. We were both surprised by, and disappointed with, with this rather inflexible and inhospitable approach. I think if I had been working there I would have obliged. Needless to say we did not return to the pub during the rest of our stay. I guess business is pretty good there, and there is no need to court custom.

No breakfast! We got up early as it said breakfast was 8 until 8.45. Early for a Sunday morning. We sat at a table. There was no one around but people in the kitchen. I went up to the bar and stood waiting for ages. Eventually after having to shout morning, someone came out. We were told we hadn’t booked breakfast and they had turned everything off. I understand it was my mistake that we didn’t book breakfast but the way we were told and there was no offer for us to pay extra for some breakfast. It isn’t clear on booking.com that breakfast isn’t included. Not the fault of The Wheatsheaf but maybe it is a good idea when you check in that they ask if you would like breakfast in the morning. We ended up with a bacon sandwich from Greggs!

Great Sunday Lunch, called in on off-chance not thinking we'd get a table . The roast beef was plentiful and so tender, a big dish of vegetables as well as new & roast potatoes, Yorkshire Pud and stuffing. An extra jug of gravy also accompanied our lunch, without having to ask ! Staff very welcoming & chatty . We also had apple crumble with custard & a syrup sponge with custard. Portion sizes are very generous, we could not fault it and will definitely return . Considering the publicans had only taken over in February this year they have definitely got the food right , lovely friendly atmosphere too. Could not find fault .

Me and my partner had Sunday lunch and pudding. Both was fantastic. My partner left to go home and I stayed to start a new job in the morning. I came down for tea and was told the kitchen wasn’t open for tea on a Sunday. I was told by someone that worked at the hotel that four undesirables had checked in and was opposite sides of me in my room. You could hear them downstairs in the bar being very loud. I fell asleep and was woken at 1am to one couple screaming at each other for three hours. I went down to breakfast at 8am to a full English breakfast which I think was poorly prepared and cooked, such a shame when the roast dinner was so lovely. The toast was white in colour and not really toasted. I have left a number of email complaining about the noise level but no reply.

Visited yesterday and understandably for an Easter bank holiday Monday it was busy. The lady serving behind the bar advised that because it was busy they would be unable to take our order for an hour and this again we understood and had a drink whilst we waited. After an hour the lady took the food order of a group who had arrived at the same time as we had (she said they had booked but it was clear by the conversations we heard at the bar when they entered that this was not the case) and then proceeded to tell us that she could not take our order because they had another booking coming in. Overall very poor service - had she told us at the outset she could not take our order we would have accepted this and would have gone and sought an alternative pub, but to leave us an hour, take the order of someone who had arrived at the same time we had and then refuse to take our order was just poor service. We will not be returning.

We had an excellent Sunday lunch at The Wheatsheaf recently and for value in Ludlow it’s hard to beat. We both chose the beef, which we requested to be just on the pink side of medium and it was delivered to us exactly as asked for. The meat was beautifully tender and flavoursome. To complement it there was a very generous dish of vegetables, both roast and steamed and a separate pot of creamed leeks - delicious. My husband likes his gravy and a large jug of this, piping hot, made him very happy!Well done and thank you. It’s wasn’t our first Sunday lunch here and it certainly won’t be our last.

My wife ordered the fish and chips and found it not to her taste. When she was asked if everything was ok with the food, she said that did not like the batter and the fish was laking in flavour. This was relayed to the "chef", who proceeded to lecture her in the quality of the fish and the batter in a very passive/aggressive manner. This continued for what seemed like an age, but was more likely to have been 5 minutes. He insisted that the price be taken off the bill, despite us not having asked for this, giving us the impression that he was doing us a favour. He also insisted that this be noted on any review that we gave. We had booked 3 nights, but felt so uncomfortable that we left a day early rather than have to face him again.

we were staying at the Charlton Arms down the road and the real ale there was a bit ordinary so we wandered up to the Wheatsheaf. Having read about the history of the road and how they were the last pub to make their own beer, I was hoping for a great pint of real ale. At the bar they have an ale called Wheatsheaf. It would not be unreasonable to assume they either make this themselves or have it made for them by a local brewery. When I noticed that it was made in Bedford, the Landlady admitted that it was actually just Courage Best with a different pump sign. She wasn't best pleased when I said that misleading customers was probably the only way they could sell Courage Best, but this is not a beer loved by true real ale fans. The alternative was Hobgoblin which I would also put in the nasty category. Call me a beer snob, it's true, but if you love beer, I'd give this place a swerve.

Visited Wheatsheaf Inn three times in our 2 day visit. A pleasant little inn with outside seating at the front looking down historic Lower Broad Street. Our dinner time visits were for a drink after a very warm walk. We were served on both occasions by a very pleasant young lady. We noticed a board saying Thursday night was steak night, two for the price of one and booked for the evening. Our meal was excellent and consisted of two sirloin steaks, a large cooked tomato, three onion rings, plenty of button mushrooms and real potato chips, not oven chips. The meal was cooked to perfection and full of flavour and at £19.99 for two meals was a real bargain. The inn was very clean and orderly and the manager and his wife were friendly and attentive. This would be our only 'port of call' whenever we visit Ludlow again. Thank you for a memorable visit.

Hostility rather than hospitality! Maybe we caught this picturesque pub on a bad day but I wouldn’t waste your money or time here. We arrived for some drinks on a sunny Saturday evening as a ‘rule of six’ group. We asked if the bar was still serving the reply ‘serving what?’ I replied politely ‘drinks please’. We were interrogated about the number of people, we explained we were 6 and were complying with restrictions when the person did not wear a face covering. We waiting for around 15mins but nobody came to serve us. A friend approached the bar and was severely told to ‘sit down’ we were just trying to see the drink options and attraction some attention. We left and the miserable man shrugged.

On our second night we got to meet the Chef Neil, who obviously has pride in what he cooks. We ordered off a blackboard which we thought was a good idea as lack of cross contamination on touching menu's. The menu was varied, and we chose Gammon and egg and sausage and mash. The meals were lovely and the the meat was bought local, but the frozen chips were a bit of a let down, but sometimes this reflects on the size of the kitchen and the preparation of them, but otherwise very nice food. I have waited to write this review and have been reluctant as I am a local, but this pub needs to up its game. I honestly didn’t notice the food because after waiting over two hours in a near empty restaurant on a Monday night for it to arrive, we inhaled the food. The management/owner/staff did not seem to understand the rudiments of service: As the 6 of us are in hospitality, we expected apologies, an offer of drinks, desserts etc. But the dessert menu wasn’t even offered after our meal. I think the remaining staff had gone home. The place was deserted. I do hope that the staff do better with visitors to Ludlow. It was embarrassing for me to take my friends there.

We ordered 2 chicken curry, rice and popadom. The service was attentive and when food arrived was very tasty, and we finished everything. Very good value and clean and pleasant environment.

A family evening meal in a traditional pub - no jukebox or (even worse) pool table. Just a very friendly welcome from the charming Zoe and her delightful waiting staff.

We enjoyed our meal in here. I had the asparagus soup and hubby had linguine with a lovely sauce. We shared the cheese board which was more than enough for us. Lovely old building with friendly locals and a good atmosphere. A nice casual meal was enjoyed.

As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the pub does not display any meal prices. Just a list of choices on a blackboard. More fool me for not asking the price before putting in the order.

Poor food for the money - Yorkshire pudding flat and soggy, vegetabled undercooked, so called roast potatoes seemed to have been fried so tasteless. Not good and I won't be going back

The pub is nicely situated, and is very nicely presented, the staff are really friendly. The menu is quite extensive, and caters for all tastes, but no prices are shown. We were quite surprised with the prices of some of our meals especially the starters, all in all a nice meal

We stopped here for lunch while traveling to northern Wales. It was a beautiful tavern in a lovely town. The food was excellent and the people very friendly. We had a delicious Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and 2 different types of Tarts. The White Chocolate Mousse was also incredible. The chef came out to to check on our food. I wish we could have stayed in the area longer.

My wife and I visited The Wheatsheaf pub twice when we visited Ludlow. We had an evening meal which was delicious and returned the next week with a couple of friends and ate outside. We all had fish and chips, which doesn't sound very grand or daring, but we again found the meal really delicious. As with our first meal, the chef came to our table for a chat which we thought was pleasant touch.

We went with family not expecting much, the service was good a fair selection of beer and a reasonable menu. We were all surprised by the food, it was good quality and served just as we ordered. I would certainly go back and that's a complimemnt.

Spent a pleasant couple of days here. Smallish room but clean and comfortable. Not a big choice at breakfast but good size portions. Free parking available at a local business. Don't park by the pub! We got told off by a resident when dropping our bags off on arrival. A very pretty town with a lovely castle and local walks but unfortunately we picked a very wet few days to visit.

This establishment has awful customer service, average food and best avoided as there are far better places to eat in Ludlow. Accidents do happen but how you deal with them is a true reflection of good service. Will definitely not be returning.

4 of us had lunch on Saturday. Food was less than average and my pet hate, sharing one bowl of chips between guests instead of one each, cheap skating always let's pubs down, just to save a few chips!

My and a visiting friend had a delicious Sunday lunch...I mentioned that it was a bit scant on the veg (though they were very nicely prepared) so I appreciated that the cook provided us with an extra portion for free and had a chat...very good service and it was very well prepared. Superb pudding and good beer too in a cosy pub.

Very warm welcome from all staff and very understanding and helpful with our friend's puppy. The chef gave him a bone. Sausage sandwich was excellent as too was the fish sandwich. Will definitely return.

Popped in for a quick bite to eat . Welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. Had heard a new chef had started this week and after devouring the home made ‘fish finger’ sandwich ( comfort food at its best, and it is actually battered fish cooked on site , not your standard fish fingers!) ) I could not resist seeing if his puddings were any good, as I consider myself the ‘queen of puddings’. His home made bread and butter pudding was faultless , light, not stodgy like some, and absolutely delicious. He even shared the recipe! I also tried the new chocolate mousse , which was rich, airy and totally decadent. The quality of these puddings were truly outstanding and we shall return soon to see what else he can do as it’s a long time since I’ve been so impressed by ‘ pub grub’ . You could taste that quality ingredients had been used and therefore the lunch was excellent value.

Decided to have Saturday dinner in Ludlow. The menu at the Wheatsheaf looked appetising so we decided to give it a whirl. The meals were disappointing and we felt that we had to beg for potatoes and vegetables. What eventually appeared beggared belief - mash that tasted like it had come out of a packet, ratatouille instead of seasonal vegetables and dauphinoise potatoes that looked like slices of potatoes with butter or margarine. Considering what we paid for the meal, it was appalling. Please don't fall for it!

Lovely traditional pub, nice decor, clean tables ( too many tables in restaurants are still sticky!) Although we had wait a while for our meals to arrive, it was worth it. Quality food, cooked really well.

The Wheatsheaf is in Lower Broad Street, next to Broad Gate. There is no parking at the pub, but in the evenings free parking is available nearby. We were seated close to the bar, and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. For starters we had the Whitebait and the Vegan Spring Roll - both were excellent. For the main course, I chose the Slow Cooked Pork Belly - this wasn't too fatty and came with excellent crackling, the helping of mashed potato was too large, but it was too good to leave any, a little apple sauce would have been welcome. My companion had the Chestnut and Blue Cheese Encroute, which she enjoyed. We had house wine, and I consider the £4.45 charged for a small (125ml) Shiraz was excessive.

We went for a meal here and the food was lovely! Very good staff we were well looked after, it just felt like it lacked a bit of atmosphere. The music was a bit low and it did feel a bit cold inside. We would still recommend to friends and family overall very good!

Nice little pub catering for locals. Very good menu, in fact the nicest meal we ate in Ludlow. Would recommend the three pork dish and the steaks were very good too. Selection of ale was a bit limited, but what they had was good.

I've visited the wheatsheaf on more than the one occasion and it never disappoints. The staff are lovely, owner brilliant, food fantastic, even when I'm full I manage to squeeze in pudding as I don't want to miss out. So thank you for all the wonderful meals :-) we really appreciate the hard work and effort. Relaxing, warm and tasty, my cup of tea.

We stumbled across this pub by chance on Sunday after a very busy day. We had tried several other pubs in town but everywhere had stopped serving food. We decided to go for a walk around as we had our dog with us and suddenly we saw the Wheatsheaf. Stepping through the door, the pub looked beautifully presented and there was a great atmosphere. The staff couldnt have been friendlier or more helpful. They found us a table, it was dog friendly (gravy biscuits on hand) and we ordered the Sunday lunch. The beef was meltingly tender, a great selection of veg, perfect roast potatos and plenty of very tasty gravy, which is a must for my husband! We then had apple and redcurrant crumble with custard. All plentiful and packed with flavour. There were a couple of local people in the pub that were extremely friendly and chatty which added to the occasion. It was beautifully clean, and very well decorated/presented. We will definitely be back, it was one of those lovely finds, and it was so much nicer than the places we had tried first to get food, but that had finished for the day. Thanks Wheatsheaf Inn for a great Sunday pit stop!

Went for lunch. I had the Sunday roast - the meat was OK but the vegetables were a big let down (tiny bit of broccoli, cauliflower and one carrot that had a very odd aftertaste). Not very many, not a good selection/variety. The gravy was like treacle. Had far far better roasts elsewhere.

Poor staff coping admirably, cream tea sounded goof. Crockery very badly chipped, teapot spout, cup, teapot, this always makes u hope china bits aren't inside! Little organisation, long queue, one till, no instruction for a first time visitor, not even written on the menu. And the dreaded give customers as little milk as possible in a very leaky minute jug. I don't often write a bad review but this was not good. Management seemed missing.

A very old English style cafe/ dining spot. Me and my mother highly regard the genuineness and traditional expertise of the food and impression given by the place. We spoke to both the chef and waiter of whom gave a friendly and professional manners. We had a talk about how tasty the homemade chips were. I will be going back there again. That is a definite. Thank you for awesome food and a quiet and homely experience.
