We have eaten here three times since they got a chef and it has been consistently excellent. So pleased Midhurst finally has somewhere for good pub food and Sunday roasts . My only advice - ask for extra gravy!

We have been several times. It's a very friendly pub, quite busy in the bar but the dining area is quiet enough to enjoy an intimate meal. First we had Friday's fish and chips which was really good. Brilliant crispy batter and perfectly cooked cod (enormous), good crushed peas and homemade tartar sauce. An excellent Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough (Wairu River) complemented it very well. We were so impressed we booked Sunday lunch. We had the pork belly which was soft and tender and accompanied by 10 different vegetables and roast potatoes. We have booked fish and chips every Friday.

Visited on 24 Augustv2024. Shame. Pub has started serving food again. Our dishes were cold. The kitchen (main chef) seemed disorganised. Was more interested in serving lobster to the owners than paying guests. Interesting business concept. The pub for a drink is great.

I made a phone booking by leaving a voicemail as we had had a superb meal here in March. As I happened to be passing the pub later that day I popped in just to confirm the reservation…as I had not had a response. I was informed there was no chef… so no food! I asked when they were going to respond to my phone reservation to let me know this; because I could have made a special trip to the pub that evening expecting dinner! They couldn’t answer that! Very poor service and such a different experience from when we were last there!

We decided to treat ourselves to a Sunday roast at The Wheatsheaf, having heard good things about the food there. It was such a great choice, as our food was fabulous. We had booked our table, which was a good decision as it was getting quite busy. It was ready for us, with our name on it, with nicely set out glasses and cutlery. We had our dog with us and he was given biscuits and water. It was no problem having him in the eating area. Although if you have a lively dog, I'd possibly not bring them, as it's not a massive space. We opted for the roast beef. It was perfectly cooked - a real surprise as a lot of places overcook the meat. This was pink and served with red wine gravy and all the trimmings. The veggies were lovely. We had crisp roast potatoes, parsnips & carrots, tenderstem broccoli and cauliflower cheese. The plate was not overloaded, which was appealing. Also it wasn't dominated by any over-sweetened red cabbage, which seems to be a thing at the moment! The home made mint sauce was fresh and vibrant. The service was fabulous - thank you Cheryl. We were really well looked after and made to feel very welcome. I'd really recommend The Wheatsheaf Sunday Roast based on our experience.

Very disappointing, after being locals to this pub for years sadly the new owners have taken a disliking to the younger generation of the pub, we have always spent vast amounts of money in this pub over the years and suddenly we are being greeted with a frosty reception, being told we’re not allowed to use the outdoor heater, being followed into the toilets and being told we’re not welcome in here or the swan. After asking to see a food menu at 2.30 in the afternoon (kitchen closes at 3) we were told they are not serving food, despite tables around us eating and receiving food. We’re more then happy to take our good custom elsewhere and support other local businesses in the area as we are always greeted with smiles and open arms. I would highly recommend people to avoid this disappointment of an establishment at all costs and put your money into the hands of happy faces in places such as the bricks or the olive and vine.

Bearing in mind the younger generation are the ones who supported this pub during its hardest times and during lockdown, we would eat in here maybe twice a week. The wheatsheaf has been my partners local since he was 18 years old, he’s now 31. Sadly our friends have all had similar experiences over the last couple of months and it’s a shame that they are trying to make such a big change in custom in an extremely small town. Word travels fast in this place and I’m concerned they have their priorities all wrong. It’s a real shame that you’re turning away willing, loyal customers. I hope this review is understood as honest feedback from loyal customers who would like to see this place thrive. Regards.

There was no menu but the lovely waitress who seemed to know exactly what she was doing and confident to ask us what exactly we liked and came back with 2 great cocktails. We stayed for an extra 2 and they were reasonable at £8 per cocktail but then we realised it was 2 for 1 which then this was even more of a bonus and feel this is very generous!Definitely we will be back when we are visiting.

I don't normally write reviews unless something is exceptionally good or exceptionally bad, unfortunately the wheatsheaf was the latter.Booked in advance for a 30th birthday meal and to watch the euros. I asked specifically if we could eat as I expected it would be busy and was happy to hear meals would be available. When we arrived the place was busy but as expected for covid rules, everyone was seated at a table, so by no means crowded. Found our table ourselves and sat down. After some time I asked at the bar to order and someone would come over to the table. Was then told no I couldn't see a menu to order because the menu is off, it's either burger or hotdogs. There was never any mention of a limited menu when I booked, so we were quite disappointed but fine. Secondly, and most surprising was that we were then told no you can't order yet because the chef is "too stressed" to take any more orders!?Weird that we couldn't even order but fine, we'll enjoy some drinks and patiently wait 30 mins as asked. An hour later and after asking several times if we could order any food/snacks at all we were then told sorry a missed food delivery means there's nothing left. Nothing, not a single edible morsel, every meal gone at the same time. In hindsight it seems pretty unlikely that they really expected a food delivery at 9pm on a busy Saturday night but this could be part of the shoddy management. What I think is more likely is we were fobbed off and basically lied to to keep us ordering drinks while they figured out how to tell people. I caught who I think was the landlord who was extremely unapologetic and blamed the "delivery" rather than taking any responsibility for pretty much lieing to us all night and offered no attempt at an apology. We had to leave before the second half to find somewhere to eat which spoiled both the birthday and being able to watch the football. Do yourselves a favour and order a takeaway instead of hoping to eat here.

Had a reservation booked 10 days in advance for this pub as we'd read good things about the food. We're on a short holiday to the South Downs so wanted to visit nice little towns like Midhurst. We turned up and there was a blackboard outside that said "sorry no food today" which we thought was weird, so we went in and asked, and sure enough the kitchen was supposedly closed. The girl behind the bar didn't seem particularly bothered when we told her we had a booking. I didn't even bother to stick around and ask her why we weren't informed as she would have just said that she didn't know. So we ended up having to find somewhere else about a 10 minute drive away that served food until at least 8.30pm. Luckily this shocking experience didn't ruin our night thanks to the other pub. The irony of it all was that I received a booking reminder email the day before. I know its automated but still - how hard would it be to give people a call or an email to let them know that you aren't serving food on the day they booked. Absolutely no excuses for it in this day and age I'm afraid. Such a shame, but it is what it is.

We booked a table for 12pm (midday). Most pubs serve cooked meals at lunchtime as well as evenings. The Wheatsheaf's website gave no clue that they do not serve lunch at lunchtime. We downloaded a menu to see what sort of food they served - it sounded OK. But when we arrived at midday we were told that meals are not served until after 3pm. (So why did they accept our booking for 12pm?) They told us that we could order ONLY breakfast items (bacon, toast, granola, eggs benedict etc.) The menu we were give was called the 'Brunch menu'. We asked if we could see the normal lunchtime menu but were told that was not possible to order anything other than 'brunch' before 3pm! We left without ordering anything. Luckily we found somewhere else to buy a meal. The Wheatsheaf needs to make clear to potential customers that it has a weird policy of not serving lunch at lunchtime, so that others are not similarly disappointed. By the way, this Trip Advisor website shows that the Wheatsheaf serves "Lunch, Dinner, Brunch, Breakfast, Drinks". Perhaps that needs changing.

Popped in for lunch (they had their brunch menus out) and sat in the courtyard. Staff were very friendly especially the lady with short, dark hair who was very attentive, polite and helpful. Interior of the pub was pretty nicely decorated, but the courtyard area was fairly sparse (although it did have a covered area with heaters). Had scampi: it was standard pub-fare, nothing amazing. The portion was a good size, but it was a bit expensive considering what you were getting. Wouldn't recommend for eating, but probably good for a drink.

Tod the bar mangar was great and placed me on a table where I could work on my laptop in peace. Great food and fantastic service

From the first introduction to make the booking to what turned out to be a fantastic evening, the landlord of this pub is amazing. This guy goes above and beyond to ensure each and every person that comes through his door is made to feel special. We were recommended our meals choices and what turn up from the kitchen was an absolute delight. It was clear that each dish was produced from scratch. My wifes mezze was the best she had ever tasted. I went for the classic ham egg and chips, where it was clear that none of the elements had any corners cut in quality. Do take the time pop in to this establishment, you will not be disappointed I assure you.Additionally he offers meal deals throughout the week and will ensure that you maximise your buck.

Our first visit for a meal since the new management has taken over and we are not disappointed. Awesome food, lovely staff, all government guidelines followed but still nice atmosphere. Try the hot dogs on Thursday, they are very good

We’ve been into the Wheatsheaf a number of times now and I’ve signed up to Trip Advisor especially to write this review! The Sunday Roast was absolutely outstanding! I had Lamb, wife and daughter had the beef all cooked to perfection. Great price, staff are faultless. A huge well done to the owners as it blows all of its competition out the water.

We took a drive out from Portchester to Midhurst for the day and on looking around for a pub lunch we found the Wheatsheaf. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from Emma and both her and Todd looked after us while we were there. The pub is very traditional and cosy, the food was lovely and the caramel ice cream was something else! Covid regulations were straightforward and to the point without making us feel awkward. Lovely experience in these trying times and we're already planning our next visit.

The best place for a pub lunch in Chichester. Typical pub food but cooked to perfection. Add to that super friendly bar service from Donna and you have the complete package. Highly recommended.

A long overdue revisit. Firstly I love the location. The welcome is great, but best of all is the food and drink – turns it into a wonderful place to be. The toasted sandwiches are labelled by cyclists - I had the Wiggo – kale, pesto, cheddar and onion chutney. Delicious! And the coffee was superb. Another part of the attraction is that I am really looking forward to being there again!

We came to The Crown Inn for a Sunday roast as we were staying at the caravan park nearby. Unfortunately by the time we arrived the restaurant had sold out of roasts so we had to order from the normal menu. We were not disappointed, the food was delicious and we would recommend it to anyone staying nearby.
