Really great food, interesting menu but not overwhelming and a good mix of classics and new, as well as some pretty unique dishes. Atmosphere on a Friday night was lovely, and what I really liked is that although the food was top drawer this is still a proper pub and manages to retain that ambience. Friendly and efficient staff, a good wine list and nice to be somewhere busy and thriving.

We're what you'd call keen foodies. We enjoy travelling and finding new pubs/restaurants. Will travel within about a 30 mile radius, and return if we have a good experience. I had found the Wheatsheaf online and noted some excellent reviews so we thought we'd give it a try. We visited a week before to make the booking. We chose the table we liked, booked it and that table was reserved in writing. The first thing we saw when we arrived was that the table was in use by another couple.. when we reserved it?.. how annoying is that! - Staff member confirmed we had reserved it and apologised for the 'mix-up' - they found us another table and gave us a free drink, but not what you'd call a good start. The pub was very busy. We were asked to wait 10 minutes before ordering so as to allow other orders to go through. I ordered the sirloin, my wife ordered the brill. The food came through in reasonable time. My sirloin (with fries) was adequate. My wife enjoyed the brill, but found the sauce was very strong and rather overpowered the flavour of the fish. Service was good - ambience in the pub was noisy (but then it's a pub).. that's not a deal breaker. I've seen other reviews which say it's lost it's 'specialness' - I'd agree with that. Maybe it would grow on us with subsequent visits but overall the impression was good, but not memorable. The price at £104.00 was memorable - I didn't feel I wanted to leave a tip - whoever gave our table away even though it was reserved let the whole team down and didn't merit one. I'm sure the Wheatsheaf will do just fine without us.

The Wheatsheaf is a real gem & so close to London , 50 mins direct train from Paddington and 5min taxi or 10min cycle from Hungerford station We sat outside in the newly refurbed garden and had an amazing lunch with great & friendly service. Pretty much tried all starters and they were excellent. The cote du boeuf to share for main along with the halibut were top class. The food is as good any gastro pub food I've had from a creativity and quality point of view - on par with Wild Rabbit and the Plough in Kingham. Highly recommend for a quick day or overnight trip to the country a world away from London. (Great drives and or cycles around the local AONB can be done pre lunch!)

The place has a really nice atmosphere and the food was good. There was a big problem, we asked for the côte de boeuf and the piece that was served was definitely not that. We absolutely know about meat. We called the waitress, said that the dish was delicious but it was most likely a sirloin or rump, not côte de boeuf. The fibers, the way the fat is, the taste, it is not the same meat. She went to the kitchen, came back saying that the cook said that the côte de boeuf is a part of the sirloin… we simply paid the bill, including the £70 “côte de boeuf” and left, not to come back unfortunatelt.

Sunday lunch. Starters: Interesting choice. Between us, we had 5 different items and they were all extremely good. Mains: Beef was very tough - were it an adult eating it rather than a young teenager, it would have been sent back (he didn't complain until too late!). Lamb rump was overcooked (pre-cooked?) Roasties and Yorkshire puds were good as was the gravy Have had much better cauliflower cheese but it was OK. Puds: Good choices albeit most of us were too full to have one!

When a chef leaves you are always a little concerned whether this village pub will survive. What it does have is excellent staff managed by the ever smiling Alex. I had the Sunday lunch and it was very good.....relief as this is my local!! What I would like to see is a more varied menu included the long lost Pizzas returning, and more chose for Vegetarians as currently poor or no choice.

Have been wanting to visit for some time as I enjoyed watching Thomas Frake on Masterchef and loved his cooking style. I am afraid we were slightly disappointed with the food. Mains and starters were average and my husband’s dessert was meant to be a chocolate fondant it was very dry no runny chocolate in the middle. The staff were excellent very attentive.

We were staying at Warners Littlevote House Hotel and went on one of their recommended walks which passed through Chilton Foliat. We saw the Wheatcheaf pub and decided to pop in for a drink. Saturday night outing for the 2 of us and the Wheatsheaf seemed appropriate as under new ownership with a decent chef on board. Obviously things are planned to improve the building and interior, still a good cosy traditional feel with a sense of local tavern to it. Great staff very welcoming and unobtrusive. The food we had was faultlessly cooked, my wife had the burger - epic was the description from her. I had the baked Hake - really delicious. Our view would be to just add a bit more to the plate as it’s higher end prices, so just add some more veg to the Hake or some slaw with the burger and job done. The wine was excellent value for the Rioja, overall a lovely experience.

My meal was very good, not super memorable, just well cooked lamb. What I do remember is being charged extra for the boiled potatoes that I had with my lamb - one of my pet hates - potatoes for goodness sake! One of the party had a pizza which was good though the side salad (a separate order) appeared no different to one from a supermarket bag. All the serving staff were very friendly. There seems to be some sort of branding issue going on. Is this meant to be an upmarket lunch venue or is it a 'pub pizza'? The eating area is by the bar and not special while the menu and prices seem to be aspiring to something different.

First I must say I couldn't fault the service. Being a hot day it was busier outside than in, but we chose the latter. We were shown to our table, orders taken and food and drink served quickly and efficiently. The menu is rather bizarre (and incidentally is out of date on the website). It ranges from what I would call fine dining nibbles and starters, some quite imaginative, with generous portions. The mains, however, are all over the place, with quite pricey fish and poultry options or a range of pizzas, Some of our party had two starters instead. I shared a pizza with a friend, but it was thin with little topping and although it had a nice crispy edge the base was soggy and not cut through properly. We ended up eating it with our fingers. On the other hand the fennel slaw that we ordered as a side was very good. Most of us had puddings, but my lemon sponge was pretty soggy whereas I expected it to be light and sitting in sauce. Disappointed. What really struck a bad note for me though was the absolutely disgusting state of the carpets which are clearly the original old patterned pub carpets and actually looked caked in black greasy patches. It honestly almost turned my stomach to see them. Please get rid of them even if it means bare floorboards or tiles. At least they could be kept clean. I imagine if you tore the carpet up into strips it would make excellent fuel! I don't want to be nauseated by the carpets before I sit down to eat. Even the coir flooring in the separate annex looked in shreds, If you are setting out to offer high quality food you really need to ensure the surroundings are appropriate. For the customer, an outward sign of lack of hygiene like this makes you wonder what is behind the scenes! I would not go back until I heard that had been replaced and wouldn't order pizza again. Sorry!

We were recommended this pub since it got a new chef. I had the trout with horseradish cream and charred bread, absolutely delicious. My husband had wild garlic and potato soup, also lovely. We then had the beef roast which was very tasty, great roasties and Yorkshire pud. The carrots were not quite cooked enough and the beef was a bit stringy. Dessert was a very lovely custard cream and rhubarb, wish there had been more than 3 small pieces of rhubarb because it was gorgeous and Rick had the coconut icecream, again very tasty

Visited this establishment and had Christmas lunch, the portions are small and the food was certainly not cooked to my satisfaction. The vegetables were, one Brussel sprout grated, a couple of Parsnips which were soggy and floppy, a carrot and beetroot. However the biggest disaster were the roast potatoes which were hard in the middle and had nothing crispy about them at all. The deserts was very nice. I have visited this pub several times and have always been underwhelmed . This pub was quaint and full of character with delightful staff. However, having read the glowing reviews of previous diners, we were somewhat underwhelmed. My Smoked Haddock Kedgeree was beautifully cooked but rather frugal as a portion, and particularly the amount of fish. First time in the pub and I’m afraid the last. The food was extremely poor. I had Crayfish for a starter priced at £7.50 and there had to be less than a teaspoon of fish in the whole dish so I complained and it was deducted. We ordered 4 steaks, one of which had more fat than meat, again complained. The deserts were also poor, overpriced. Our bill was £170, and that included 4 pints and two gin and tonics so we paid heavily for poor food. The couple next to us complained that they had a slug in their salad!

A real village pub with a difference. Obviously popular with the locals but a menu that’s anything but predictable. I ate locally caught crayfish and a delicious mackerel and beetroot pizza (sounds weird but really worked). My wife’s chicken liver pate was as good as it gets and the arrancini was Roman standard. We’ll be back with the rest of the family.

Visited Chilton to see the setting for the BBC's Victorian Garden series and looked this pub up on TripAdvisor. Good advice. The beer, the company, the food and the service were excellent. A definite recommend and will return. The pizzas are the speciality. Sounds a bit churlish to say food slightly expensive in comparison for visitors from 'up north' like me,yet would still stump up as it was delicious.

Found this little gem during a bike ride in the country to blow away the cobwebs on Saturday morning. Decided to return on the Sunday for lunch. I was particularly drawn to it because they served food that is almost entirely organic and all the produce is sourced very local.

We’ve been coming here since the owners took over. We’ve seen so many changes and really enjoyed seeing how it’s improved over the last couple of years! It’s so nice to have a pub nearby that has fresh, organic and local food. The pizza is the best I’ve ever had! Would recommend The Wheatsheaf to anyone looking for somewhere that has good quality, tasty food.

What a shame I don’t live closer... Friendliest staff I’ve met, delicious food, well priced tasty pints, beautiful building... I’d recommend it more highly, but I wouldn’t want to not get a table next time I come this way.

The food here is spectacular. Cute little place out the way. Menu had plenty even for my vegetarian self. Beautiful pub and the staff are just as beautiful, I'm in love 😍

This is a lovely pub in the countryside. My husband and I both had the Spanish pizza which was amazing. What let it down was when I checked the bill before paying there was a £1 "voluntary donation". When I queried this with the bar staff I was told they partnered with a local charity and this was a donation to it. They didn't know the name of the charity but thought it was to do with homelessness.

We had lunch in this pub on Sunday and ordered drinks but at that point did not realise that they didn't serve Sunday lunches, however we looked at the menu and decided to stay. I had ham, egg and chips which you would think was reasonably straightforward. Sadly the chips were a dark yellow and tasted disgusting which I think was due to the oil they were cooked in. I mentioned this to the person behind the bar and she said that they cleaned the oil once a week - this is not obviously often enough, The two fried eggs were greasy and the ham was fatty. Sadly we will not be returning again. A shame when you spend £40 on drinks and food and its a disaster.

Quick dinner stop with two little people and two big people - the little ones were entertained and entertained the owners - even treated to a tour of the kitchen! Food was excellent (wood-fired pizza's and aged beef burgers) and the lovely organic drinks available. Really friendly, really tasty - highly recommend.

Another fabulous lunch and great service. All four starters were superb, pizza's lovely and the burgers had more beef in than I have ever seen.

Excellent quality of food and drink. The service was very good , swift and friendly. It is the second time we have travelled for an hour to meet up with friends for lunch here. On both visits we have been well satisfied.

The menu has lots of interest and plenty of choice for veggies and carnivores. Good service and the owners have turned an ailing pub around.

I've been into the pub a few times for a quick drink and finally I got to have food as well. My father in law arranged celebration meal for their wedding anniversary dinner with the chef as he wanted fillet steak. All I can say is that it's the best steak I have had out for a very long time. Chips and veg was very good all home cooked and prepared. Choc caramel tart was also very good, thin and crisp pastry with good quality chocolate. Eton mess as good as well. Excellent Syrah and we had 4 happy diners. We shall be back again very soon indeed. Keep up the great food and will be buying steak for home from the local organic farm where they source their beef from - Nesbitt Farm.

Popped in on this fine sunny Saturday, having walked the dog, so just wanted a drink and a bit of lunch. Superb Spanish chicken and goats cheese pizzas, then shared the most amazing salted caramel pudding. Excellent Ramsbury Ales and decent selection of Gins. Brilliant staff and the atmosphere is like sharing an 'all are welcome' family lounge.

Lovely festive lunch today with friends. I had a gluten free turkey dinner. Lots of lovely roasted carrots and parsnips, gravy, braised red cabbage, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese chestnut stuffing and tasty turkey. Everything was flavoursome and tasted fresh.

Unfortunately unable to review accomodation, food or service as we were double booked. Apparently landlords wife responsible for this so she was summoned. Landlord then completely ignored us and didnt even offer us a seat let alone an apology, this was left to his wife. She didnt seem well and was apparently in hospital at the time of our booking. She went away, 20 mins later produced £140 to cover the cost at premier inn who had ample availability and she had phoned them. Premier Inn denied any phone calls from Helen. They had one room which went whilst we were trying to book it. Plenty of certificates of awards, shame they are so old and tatty like the pub. I hate being lied to but rudeness, lies and facing a night in the car... Dont book here, disgraceful performance. Tired and niaive, should have insisted they booked it in front of us! Took the edge off Bath Christmas market tbh!
